My wife Sharrie and I retired to Grants Pass ten years ago andcall it home. We love living in Southern Oregon and feel we havereturned to our roots in rural America. Serving on the Board ofRCC is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to our community.

After teaching at the high school level, all of my professionalwork experience has been at the community college. My beliefin the community college system is so strong, that all three ofmy children are community college graduates and enjoy suc-cessful careers as a result of that experience.

My administrative experience has provided me with an extensivebackground in all aspects of community college operations, including instruction, fiscal services, student services, person-nel, community services, buildings and grounds, and economicdevelopment. Having served on nine accreditation teams in fourstates has added to my breadth and understanding of commu-nity colleges. Participation in many statewide community col-lege committees has added to my background.

I understand the role of the governing board as a significant partof the team effort to guide Rogue Community College, bothshort and long term but separate from that of the college admin-istration.

Lastly, I have the time and energy to commit to serving our cit-izens as a member of the Board of Rogue Community College. Iappreciate and value your support.

ment operator; started own business RC Enterprises at age 18.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Received High SchoolDiploma from North Valley High School.

GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Served and attended on theJosephine County Homebuilders Association and OregonHomebuilders Association Board of Directors meetings.

I moved to Grants Pass in 1979. I went to Fleming MiddleSchool and graduated from North Valley High School. Duringjunior high and high school I learned so much from myvocational classes; auto shop, woodshop, and metal shop. Those skills carried over to my past jobs and current busi-nesses, and enabled me to support myself and create sever-al jobs in my community.

I feel that our country is suffering from a lack of industry andmanufacturing. These classes are being taken away and area crucial part of our future for a strong country. We are muchtoo dependent on other countries and need those jobs backin the USA. Although college is very important, it is not foreveryone. Our vocational classes our important and need tobe preserved.

I believe one of the biggest issues our schools are faced withis its budget. I feel the board needs to include a team ofmembers who are used to running a business and dealingwith budgets, business owners who have experienced finan-cial good times and trying times also.

My wife and I have two boys in Fort Vannoy Elementaryschool and one granddaughter that will be attending ThreeRivers School District as well. I have a strong desire to seeproblems resolved and to see a strong future for our SchoolDistrict.

We are on the brink of profound changes in the manner inwhich we deliver education in our state, and I am anxiousto be a part of helping navigate our school districtthrough the challenges and opportunities these changeswill surely present.

My previous two terms of service have been very educa-tional, and I believe the insights and knowledge I havegained can be invaluable to our community in the comingyears. While an incumbent is bound to carry some nega-tive baggage, I believe my history of level headed and fairdecision making speaks for itself.

My vision for Three Rivers School District entails greatlyexpanded on-line learning opportunities and moreoptions for our students and their families. I am pro-char-ter school when it is feasible and serves the greater good. Also, I intend on trying to offer charter school options toour secondary students in the area of vocational educa-tion, an area I believe has been greatly harmed due to theState and Federal approaches to mandating services andcontrolling budget allocations.

If ever there were a need for experience and a proven abil-ity to make tough decisions while looking out for the bestinterests of all of our students and their families, it is now.I believe I offer these traits and hope that you will supportme in my goal to continue serving our community in thismanner.

I have chosen to run for the school board because I feelthat I can effectively contribute to our district.

Education is the most important gift we can give our chil-dren, and we must strive to provide the best possibleenvironment for learning. Over the years I have had theopportunity to meet many of our excellent, dedicatedteachers, and will work to support them. The schoolboard, along with parents, teachers, administrators, andthe community, need to work together to continue theexcellence of District 7.

Funding for education is becoming increasingly morechallenging, so we must prudently manage our tax dollarsto get the maximum benefit from them.

I believe that I can work effectively with the other boardmembers, administrators, staff and the public duringthese challenging times and would appreciate your vote.

GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: Three Rivers SchoolBoard since 2002.

As individuals, we try to figure out the right course ofaction for our lives and then we attempt to pursue thatcourse.

In government things are not so simple. Almost all deci-sions that lead to action come from compromise. Forinstance, any citizen who invests some time and effortcan produce a budget for the School District using pub-licly available data.

The real work begins when you try to convince the mem-bers of the Budget Committee to approve a budget youthink has the right spending priorities. Many compro-mises need to be reached before the Board formallyadopts a budget.

Finding that right course of action and then seeking thecompromises needed to act is the real work of SchoolBoard members.
