Educators are accustomed toinstructing their students, but atVoorhees Middle School on Sept.3, some teachers had the chanceto learn from each other.

On that day, staff, teachers, in-structional associates and evenVoorhees School District admin-istrators joined together for anEdcamp conference.

Edcamp is a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization cre-ated five years ago by a group ofteachers under the theory thatbringing education professionalstogether for user-generated con-ferences would lead to greatergains from their professional de-velopment.

The user-generated confer-ences are commonly referred toas unconferences where educa-tional professionals voluntarily

attend a day of informal meetingswhere those at the meetings arealso the closest thing to a presen-ter.

According to eighth-gradeVMS special education teacherand Edcamp organizer Julie El-liott, at the beginning of the dayattendees suggested the topicsthey were interested in, whichwere then posted for differenttimes and locations in the school.

Just some of the topics of theday included incorporating na-ture into the classroom, studentdirected learning, alternatives topaper and pencil tests, socialmedia in the classroom and cre-

    ative strategies for classroommanagement.

Once the list of topics was fi-nalized, those in attendance sim-ply attended the sessions that in-terested them most.

Its really professional devel-opment at your fingertips, Elliotsaid. You get to pick your profes-sional development basically, be-cause if somethings not up therethat you want to talk about, you

can put it up there and start aconversation with a group ofyour peers.

Elliot said the day was open toeducational professionals frominside and outside of the district, with the goal of letting those inattendance make connectionsand work together in professionaldevelopment beyond just the one-day camp.

Talk to each other and emaileach other and bounce ideas offof each other and work on theplans and strategies together andkeep it going so its continual pro-fessional development through-out the school year, Elliot said.

Live notes from all the topicswere also kept on digital GoogleDocuments so those who wantedto attend meetings on multipletopics at the same time could ac-cess the notes later.

Melissa Killion, also a VMSeighth-grade special education

teacher and Edcamp organizer, described Edcamp as a chance totransfer ideas and find out whatworks in the classrooms of oth-ers.

This is not about somebodystanding in from of the room topitch you a product or tell youhow to do something. This is youworking with your fellow teach-

ZANE CLARK/The SunEducation majors Nicholas Centurione and Kirsten Connor look at the list of user-generated meetingtopics during the Edcamp professional development conference held at Voorhees Middle School on Sept.3. Educational professionals were able to create topics for meetings and then lead the group discussionsamong themselves.

The SunEach September for half a cen-

tury, students have returned fromsummer vacation to fill the halls

at Eastern Regional High School.Yet this years incoming fresh-

man class will experience some-thing different from all classesthat have come before when East-ern assigns those students theirown iPad computer tablet device.

This years incoming freshmanclass will be the first at Eastern toexperience the schools new one-to-one iPad initiative, in whichthe school will provide each fresh-man student their own iPad touse in the classroom and takehome throughout the year.

In the spring, the Eastern BOEapproved the purchase of iPadsfor this years incoming freshmento be used for schoolwork as wellas state-mandated Partnershipfor Assessment of Readiness forCollege and Careers testing, which can only be completed digi-tally.

Unlike the more than 560 iPadsthe district purchased the previ-ous school year that remained in

the school to be shared among allgrade levels, with the one-to-oneinitiative, once freshmen stu-dents receive their iPads, thatparticular device will stay withthem throughout their career atEastern.

The district originally consid-ered outfitting multiple grade lev-els with iPads simultaneously, be-fore deciding on an incrementalapproach where each batch of in-coming students would receive adevice upon entering freshmanyear.

According to Eastern Superin-tendent Harold Melleby Jr., stu-dents will not be able to receivetheir device until after they at-tend a special meeting with theirparents in late September or earlyOctober.

At the meeting, students andparents will sign an acceptableuse policy and receipt forms stat-
