It takes dedication, hard workand determination to be an ath-lete. Athleticism is not some-thing that happens over night,but takes talent and hard work toshow natural ability in a sport.Amongst 11 other players fromthe area, Matt Klinewski andCherry Hills Team Speed re-turned from the Nike WorldChampionship tournament at theMirage Cason in Las Vegas.

The team walked away fromthe championship with 13 winsand five losses, taking the thirdspot out of 164 teams in its agegroup.

During the World Champi-onship, the team managed to stayfocused on the court and playedmore games then the averageteam.

When you watch them play alot of teams, [our opponents]might be better than us and might

have more athletic ability, but asthe game goes on to the third andfourth quarter, [Team Speed does-nt] get tired, head coach RobertDePersia said.

nament championship games.Team Speed added the successfulLas Vegas trip to its accomplish-ments.

Klinewski, the 69 forwardand a junior at Eastern HighSchool, has a ranking of his own.He may sit at the twenty-second

spot in the NJ Hoops top 100 forJuniors, but is ranked secondfrom all players in the South Jer-sey area.

DePersia mentioned that hav-ing a team that is recognized forits ability against national teamsis incredible.

Team Speed represents CherryHill but the players are from dif-ferent areas within South Jersey.

Surrounded by major metro-

politan teams, Team Speed man-aged to squeeze into the thirdseat, said DePersia.

DePersia mentioned how pecu-liar it was to have major metro-politan teams.

They are just that good, De-Persia said.

This type of skill doesnt hap-pen over night, said DePersia.

DePersia mentioned that mostof the players on the team arefour sport stars in their town. Hesaid the Klinewski used to figureskate when he was younger andhe was a champion figure skater.

The other sports that the boysplayed help with the players bas-ketball ability, but DePersia does-

nt base the players abilities inother sports to basketball. Train-ing sessions run on and off-sea-son and the boys are always prac-ticing basketball, said DePersia.

Each training session com-

bines various training modules,to help an all-around develop-ment, but the major focus is onthe speed and agility training.

The training schedule for theseyoung athletes consists of inten-sive speed and agility training,core training, weight trainingand stamina improvement. Ac-cording to DePersia, core trainingtakes place three days out of theweek, one hour and 15 minutesper day.

From November to March, theguys practice for Team Speedsaround the schools schedulewhile the other eight months areused for strictly Team Speed prac-tices, said DePersia.

DePersia stressed the academicimportance for the team. The pro-gram is not there to create a bas-ketball player; each player needsto be a well-rounded individual,said DePersia.

Everybody in our programtakes honors classes, DePersiasaid. Everyone of them is col-lege admitable.

Combining academic scoreswith their talent on the courtshelps with the college applica-tions.

During the regularly scheduledVoorhees Township Committeemeeting on Monday, Aug. 13, theremoval of the approximately 100Canadian geese from the EchelonMall Lake was discussed.

Although the topic was notpresently on the agenda, Presi-dent of the Animal Rights Ac-tivists of New Jersey and

Voorhees resident David Sauder,stood up before the committeeand mentioned his concern aboutthe township not taking action re-garding the removal.

I hope that Voorhees can askEchelon to manage the geese hu-manly, Saunders said.

Saunders presented the com-mittee with a packet of alterna-tive methods to reduce the popu-lation of Canadian geese at the

Echelon Mall facilities in a hu-mane matter.

Along with the packet, Saun-ders gave a brief statement andhad a typed letter on him, ex-plaining his concerns about theEchelon Common Facilities Asso-ciations (ECFAs) actions to re-move the geese.

Sauder recommended the pos-sible cost effective and humanealternatives to managing thegeese on the property.

Such alternatives like the Na-ture-sweep a towable device thatuses a nylon brush system to pickup debris without damaging thegrass.

If you purchased your house before

2007, youve probably endured

about five years of misery. Your

home probably isnt worth as much as

it was back then. The housing market

has been kicked around, the news al-

ways seemed to be bad and getting

worse, and people had to wonder if thedownward spiral would ever end.

Well, maybe it has.

Zillow reported last month that the

second quarter was a good one for

home prices. They actually went up

year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-

ter than down.

And, considering the economy has-

nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-

pecially promising.

If the trend continues, its great

news for the economy.

From a purely practical standpoint,rising values can free up equity (al-

though it might take awhile to get peo-

ple right side up on their home val-

ues). Then, homeowners can begin to

tap that equity to make repairs, pay off

other bills, etc. And when people spend

money, jobs are created.

It also would be a boost to the nation-

al psyche. A homes worth long has

been a kind of security blanket for

families. Over the years, there had

been ups and downs in the market, but,

again, over time, home values steadily

increased. There was a confidence that

you could always rely on your biggest

investment: your home.

That, of course, all changed about

five years ago.

Thats not to say that all will be well

by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosedhomes, the negative equity many

homeowners still have and the like will

continue to weigh on the market. Were

not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of

fortune. But the kind of sustained

growth Zillow reported definitely beats

the alternative.

At the least, maybe homeowners

have seen the worst of the housing

storm. Maybe they begin to regain a

little confidence in the future of their

home. Maybe they can relax. A little.

Voorhees Township SolicitorHoward Long advised the mem-bers to not take action on thismatter due to the fact that itwould go against State and Feder-al regulations under the NJDFWand New Jersey Department ofEnvironmental Protection.

Mayor Michael Mignognaagreed with Long; however,Mignogna and Long agreed thatthe committee will do its best tospread the word about the pos-sible alternatives to removinggeese and the issue that arosewith the removal of geese fromEchelon Mall Lake.

Voorhees Township Adminis-

trator Larry Spellman mentionedthat the town couldnt take actionsince the Echelon Common Facil-ities Association gathered thenecessary permits to remove the

geese. MAMCO property manage-ment is the managing agency forthe ECFA who applied for thedepredation permit from the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Services Mi-gratory Birds division.

Spellman said that the geeseare protected and the townshipcant challenge the ECFA for tak-ing that type of action.

Spellman is working on a coverletter to give to Alan Tate, manag-er for MAMCO and caretakerof the Echelon common proper-ties.

I hope that the Voorhees town-ship will give that manual toother business in Voorhees and inthe Echelon Mall, said Sauder.The more people that knowabout these non-lethal ways arebetter. We do have to reduce popu-lation, but I recommend reducingit humanely.

Also at the meeting:The committee approved the

appointment of Jason Cramer to

the Voorhees police department.Cramer was formally employedat the Rowan University policedepartment.

The committee approved three

grants during the meeting. AnACME grant for $5000 will beused for improvements at theSheppard Road basketball courts.The Community Development

Block Grant (CDBG) a grant forsenior citizens that will be used tooffset costs for the senior bus andsenior coordinator, said Spell-man was unanimously ap-proved.

They also approved to continuethe Eastern High School Cops inSchools program federal grantprogram that offers law enforce-ment agencies to patrol and po-lice around schools.

The third grant approval wasthe Clean Communities Grant for$47,260. According to Spellman,this grant will be used for littercollection and other trash collec-tions.

The committee also discussedthe Dutch Town Road Pump sta-tion. By this time next year, thetownship is hoping to have fullownership of the land and thepump station.

Spellman also wanted to makesure that the residents ofVoorhees know that the commit-

tee approved the resolution to ex-tend the grace period for taxes.Third quarter taxes are due Mon-day, Aug. 27, at the close of busi-nesses.
