When the phrase “spin a yarn”is mentioned in the same sen-tence as the word “library,”things like tall tales, fables andstories might come to one’s mind.

Yet for those who take the timeto visit the Voorhees Branch Li-brary on the first and third Fri-day of every month, visitorsshouldn’t be surprised to find ac-tual yarn work taking place, allthanks to the steady hands of theSouth Jersey Yarners.

    ew Jersey State Police are

    spending $1.5 million to outfit

    1,000 troopers over the next

nine months with body cameras. It’s a

hefty price to pay for technology, but a

very small one when considering the

    good it will do.

Body cameras for police have be-come increasingly popular throughout

    the country following police shootings

that made national headlines in places

    such as Ferguson, Mo.

Troopers will wear the body cam-

eras on either their shirt or their hat,

and will be required to turn them on

    during traffic stops, protests, investiga-

    tions and while making arrests.

Acting state Attorney General JohnHoffman said the cameras “will act as

    an objective witness in police-involved

    shootings and other use-of-force inci-

    dents.”

    Some local police departments, such

    as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and

    even Rowan University, have already

adopted body cameras for their police

forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local de-

    partments buy cameras.

Police body cameras are a wonderful

idea, and any state money that can be

used to help local departments outfit

their officers with them is a good

thing. The safety and security of the people

of New Jersey are of the utmost im-

portance, above all other concerns of

living in our state. Any initiative that

improves that safety and security –

while at the same time serving as an

objective judge for citizens and offi-

cers – is something that should be ex-

    plored and implemented.

    in our opinion

    Homegrown plants produce

    savings and education

    The height of the

    summer growingseason is upon us,

and things are infull bloom at the

    Camden CountyGreenhouse. The

    newly invigoratedgreenhouse is lo-

    cated at the Cam-den County

    EnvironmentalCampus at Lakeland. Dedicated

volunteers are currently growingmore than 15,000 plants that will

    beautify the Camden CountyPark System.

In years past, the park systemwould purchase flowers from

commercial green houses, butnow the thousands of plants used

to enliven the county and the parksystem are all locally grown in

county facilities. The greenhouseis currently growing more than

5,000 winter pansy seedlings forplanting in this fall.

We completely transformed our100-foot-long greenhouse that had

sat vacant for several years. In ad-dition to supplying our parks

with vegetation, it hosts a uniquelearning experience in collabora-

tion with the Rutgers MasterGardeners program.

This year, we also focused onthree main annuals: Petunias,

Verbena, & Lantana. They wereselected for their drought toler-

ance, ease of care and vibrant col-ors. This has created a substantial

savings since we were able to buy

much smaller plants and growthem with the help of our RutgersMaster Gardeners and volunteers

    from local municipal greenteams.

Camden County Master Gar-deners and certified community

greenhouse members are onhand to teach volunteers the gar-

dening process from seeds to fullgrown plants. Children can come

    here to see how

fruits and vegeta-bles are grown, and

    become inspired tostart their own

    gardens.We are continuing

    to expand the pro-gramming offered

    at the greenhouse,and have great

plans for the futureof the environmental campus.

Currently, we are completing theroof on our new potting shed at

the facility and are looking for-ward to opening the first certified

outdoor classroom in South Jer-sey through the Explore Nature

Program. These new featureswill join the Camden County Sen-

sory Garden, an immersive expe-rience for children of all abilities.

The Camden County Environ-mental Campus is located at 508

Lakeland Road in GloucesterTownship. The newest addition

to the Camden County Park Sys-tem has transformed an eight-

acre site at the Lakeland Complexin the Blackwood neighborhood

into a hub for community garden-ing and environmental education.

We invite you to join are team of volunteers that are working to

make Camden County greener. If you aren’t able to volunteer,

Group is growing, seeks new members

    years.Eventually, the duo decided

they should just start a central-ized group, and once they learnedthere was space available at theVoorhees Library, the South Jer-sey Yarners was born.

According to Stevie, the groupis constantly growing, and is

open to long-time yarn lovers aswell as those who have just start-ed the hobby and are looking tolearn.

“It’s nice having other peopledo what you do. I’ve always beenthat girl who knits, so it’s nice toknow I’m not the only one,” Ste-vie said.

For those who are new to thehobby, Stevie said members of thegroup would work with those whoare new regardless of their skill

level to help them accomplish anyparticular project or goal theymight have.

And for those who are longtimepractitioners of the hobby, Steviesaid the meetings serve as some-thing akin to a university masterclass.

“Everybody kind of bringstheir own projects or maybesomething they’ve been workingon and maybe need help with, andthey’re just there for the commu-nity,” Stevie said.

For those thinking about get-ting into the hobby, Stevie saidthere were also mental benefits tothe work.

“It’s actually been proven tohelp brain functions such as

being able to function and use

fine motor skills,” Stevie said.“You’re controlling two needlesand yarn then you bring them to-gether to produce something.”

The South Jersey Yarnersmeets on the first and third Fri-day of every month at theVoorhees Branch Library from 7

     – 8:45 p.m. The group meets inRoom C on the third floor, andmeetings are free and open to

anyone at any age or skill level.

township’s emergency serviceswas a big reason why the VTPDdecided to hold its own NationalNight Out for the firsttime.

“It’s that familiarity and thatcommunity feel,” Ober said. “It’s

just to say ‘hey, cops aren’t badguys.’ We were kind of like rockstars after 9/11, and with recentheadlines we’ve done a 180 in the

eyes of some members of thepublic, so we’re just trying to putit out there that ‘hey, we’re stillthose good guys.’”

Ober said allowing the publicto meet members of the policeforce in a relaxed setting and put-ting together officers’ faces andnames could also help the depart-ment with future investigations.

    “Maybe they’ll recognize us

somewhere down the road and re-member ‘hey, that guy wasn’t abad guy,’ and maybe they’ll giveus information or cooperate in in-

vestigations or feel easier contact-ing us with information aboutcrimes,” Ober said.

Many children at the eventcould be seen walking aroundwith plastic fire helmets and po-lice badges, and Ober said Nation-al Night Out events are also justgood ways for families and kids tocome out and have a fun time.

“Kids love fire trucks, and theylove police cars, and we let kidsget in and get their pictures taken

     – it’s all the stuff I wish they weredoing when I was a kid,” Obersaid.

When the event got underway, and exhibitions were set up asmembers of the public started toarrive, Ober said the crowd wasstarting to look great.

“We didn’t know if we weregoing to get 100 or 1,000 people. We just really didn’t know, so

we’re hoping this will be ourbarometer for future events, soI’m hoping we’re off to a goodstart,” Ober said.

According to Ober, the depart-ment also got a great responsefrom various groups and organi-zations in the community as itwas planning the event.

“We had a cutoff of a couple of weeks ago and we were still get-ting requests from people yester-day asking if they could comeout, and we just had to tell themwe weren’t sure we would have atable or not, so it got a big re-sponse,” Ober said.

With police K9 demonstrations,a car show, food, police cars, firetrucks, emergency services infor-mation and more, Ober said theevent was really a one-stop shopfor community interaction.

“We’re hoping it’s a hit andhope that people remember the of-ficers, and we just get that famil-iarity out there and hopefully itkeeps rolling,” Ober said.
