Senior citizens in CamdenCounty now have yet another rea-son to adopt a pet, aside from thenumerous health benefits report-ed by years of scientific studies.

Starting April 22, The AnimalAlliance of Camden County willlaunch its new “Seniors for Sen-iors” program, which will waivethe adoption fee for senior citi-zens age 60 and older who adopt asenior pet – typically age 7 orolder – at one of four CamdenCounty locations.

The program is the latest ini-

tiative from the Animal Allianceof Camden County, which in addi-tion to Independent Animal Con-trol, consists of the Animal Adop-tion Center in Lindenwold, theCamden County Animal Shelterin Blackwood, and the AnimalWelfare Association andVoorhees Animal Orphanage,both based in Voorhees.

Don Jennings, executive direc-

tor of the VAO, said the “Seniorsfor Seniors” program is fundedby the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders, which, hesaid, generously offered to coverthe costs for senior citizens adopt-ing senior pets.

Jennings said that pairing, sen-ior citizens and senior pets, madesense to the members of the al-liance, as both age groups of per-son and pet complement theneeds of one another.

“For most animals, they get tothat age, they’re kind of laid backanyway, so it’s a good match forseniors who might have limitedmobility or less ability to get out,

so this helps them with an animalthat fits better,” Jennings said.

In return, Jennings said theprogram also helps find homesfor senior pets, which he saidcould sometimes be more of achallenge to find homes for.

At the April 13 meeting of theVoorhees Township Committee,

several bond ordinances were in-troduced, totaling just more than$3.7 million.

The ordinances included im-provements to various township

buildings and grounds, comple-tion of various roads and relatedimprovements, the acquisition of sewer utility equipment and im-provements, costs associated withthe installation of traffic signalsand the acquisition of vehiclesand equipment for the township.

According to Township Admin-istrator Larry Spellman, thevarying nature of the items andprojects being bonded requiredthe use of several separate bondordinances rather than a singu-

lar, larger ordinance that wouldinclude everything.

Spellman said the townshipwas in good shape financiallywith its bonding, and all the proj-ects came in conjunction with therecently passed 2015 municipalbudget that required no increasein municipal taxes.

One of the larger bond ordi-nances introduced was for nearly$1.4 million for the township’sfive-year road program and theconstruction and restoration of various roads in the township, in-cluding milling and resurfacingand replacement of variousstreetlights.

The roads included in the ordi-nance are Battery Hill Drive,Hollybrook Way, Barbet Drive,Bronwood Drive, Poplar Avenue,Great Oak Road, Camden Avenue,Laurel Road and Las BrisasBoulevard.

Another of the larger bond or-dinances introduced was for $1.45

million in relation to the pur-chase of vehicles and equipmentfor the township.

The bond includes money forsix police cars, a passenger busfor senior citizen transportation,a dump truck with snow removalequipment and a street sweeperfor the road department, a com-pressed natural gas trash truckfor the sanitation department,and a diesel mower with infieldattachments for the parks depart-ment.

An additional ordinance of $420,000 was also introduced forsewer improvements, specificallyfor reconstruction of pumps at

for an old pet,” Jennings said.Maya Richmond, executive di-

rector at the AWA, said she haspersonal experience with seniorpet adoption, as several years agoher own 62-year-old mother lost abeloved dog, but while trying toadopt a new pet, she was in-formed she was “too old” to prop-erly care for an animal.

Richmond said the new pro-gram not only promotes seniors

taking on pets, but would improvetheir lives by giving them a pet tocare for every day.

“There has been a tremendousamount of studies and correla-tion between the quality of lifeimprovements and health advan-

tages of having a pet for matureadults, as well as everyone,” Rich-mond said.

According to Richmond, theprogram is just the latest way inwhich the alliance has allowedmembers to work collaborativelyand collectively.

“You know that the same pro-gram is being offered, so you’regoing to have an easy time mak-ing that match or finding theright pet,” Richmond said. “Allshelters have this one program.”

Jennings also extolled the ben-efits of the alliance, includingseveral other relatively new pro-

grams, such as the “Pet FoodPantry” at Animal Adoption Cen-ter, Animal Welfare Associationand Camden County AnimalShelter on the second Saturday of every month that provides nutri-tion assistance to pet owners un-

dergoing financial hardship whootherwise might be forced to sur-render their pets.

“Basically, there was just a re-newed effort to get everybody onboard, and we quickly got trac-tion,” Jennings said.

bout 10 years ago, we started a

contest of sorts that helped us

give back to the community of

Haddonfield.

In the contest, we ask residents of

Haddonfield – which, at the time, was

one of the only towns where we had a

newspaper – to submit short essaystelling the community why a local non-

profit group deserved to receive a do-

nation. We gathered all the nominating

essays, published them and held a com-

munity-wide vote to see who was most

deserving.

After we tallied the votes, we donat-

ed $500 to the organization that won,

and we also gave $100 to the person

who wrote that particular essay. For

us, this contest – which we called The

Ray of Hope – was a way for us to give

back to the community in an extreme-

ly impactful way.

The smaller organizations that re-

ceived nominations – such as a CubScout troop, a garden club, a senior cit-

izens club or a book reading club –

often do as much for the community as

the larger, more well-known non-prof-

its do, but they just don’t receive the

same attention, or financial backing.

We’re not saying that the March of

Dimes, Red Cross or other non-profits

don’t support worthy causes or are notdeserving of donations; we’re just say-

ing the $500 we were donating had

more of an impact on the local town

organizations, since they operate with

a much smaller budget.

Last year, as we celebrated our com-

pany’s 10th anniversary, with now 10

newspapers that we publish, we ex-

panded on this idea by creating The

Ray of Hope Fund – a part of the Com-

munity Foundation of South Jersey –

to make similar micro-donations to

community organizations that have a

significant impact in the neighbor-hoods they serve.

We’ve been collecting tax-deductible

donations over the last year, and are

still collecting them online at

Now, we’re about ready to start dis-

tributing some of this money. But first,

the Main Street and Evergreenpump stations, reconstruction of township sewer lines, sewer sys-tem mapping and evaluation andacquisition or alarm monitoringsystems and specialty tools forthe sewer utility.

Regarding a $343,000 bond ordi-nance introduced for improve-ments to the township’s buildingsand grounds, Spellman said spe-cific improvements include grad-

ing and drainage improvementsto Connolly Park and RabinowitzField to deal with issues of pool-ing water.

The smallest bond ordinanceintroduced was for $105,000 fortraffic signal installation and re-pair. According to Spellman, thetownship spends about $20,000 an-nually repairing traffic signals,so about every five years thetownship bonds about $100,000 to

create a fund to draw from whenmaking these repairs.

In other news:• Committee reconfirmed the

tax rate for the Municipal OpenSpace, Recreation, Farmland andHistoric Preservation Trust Fundat $.02 per $100 of assessed valua-tion. The rate is unchanged fromthe previous year.

• Committee approved a devel-oper’s agreement with SamaritanHealthcare. The Marlton-basedhealth-care and hospice organiza-tion is scheduled to build thearea’s first free-standing, inpa-tient hospice facility in Voorhees

off Route 73 sometime in 2016.• Committee approved the ap-pointment of Anthony Russo tothe position of police sergeant.

• Committee approved the ap-pointment of Manuel Leoncio toa vacant position on the zoningboard, with the appointment toexpire Dec. 31, 2017.

• The next meeting of theVoorhees Township Committee isscheduled for April 27.

weather, so doesthe chances of encountering do-

mesticated andwild animals.

The CamdenCounty Depart-

ment of Health and Human Serv-ices reminds you to avoid any

contact with unknown animalsdue to the threat of rabies.

Although rabies is a seriousand sometimes fatal illness, its ef-

fects can be prevented by earlytreatment. The disease is spread

to humans through the bite of aninfected animal, or much more

rarely through exposure to thesaliva of that animal.

If you do encounter an un-known animal and have been bit-

ten or scratched it is importantthat you seek immediate medical

attention to prevent the onset of the disease. Individuals who have

been exposed to a rabid animal

usually receive a series of injec-tions in the deltoid (shoulder) atprescribed intervals. Prompt

medical attention after being bit-ten or exposed to a diseased ani-

mal is essential to an individual’srecovery.

I urge you to protect your fam-ily, your pets and yourself from

rabies by observing a few simplerules. First and foremost, please

be a responsible pet owner andkeep rabies vaccinations up to

date for all dogs, cats, and ferrets.You should also keep your pets

under direct supervision so theydo not come in contact with wild

animals.If your pet is bitten by a wild

animal, you should seek immedi-ate veterinary assistance and al-

ways contact your local animalcontrol agent to remove any stray

animals from your

neighborhood. Theymay be unvaccinated

and could be infected

by the disease.It is very important

to avoid direct contact

with unfamiliar ani-mals. Teach your chil-

dren that they shouldnever handle unfa-

miliar animals, wild or domestic,even if they seem friendly. Never

adopt wild animals or bring theminto your home. Do not try to

nurse sick animals to health. Al-ways call animal control or an an-

imal rescue agency forassistance. Be sure to know the

animal control number in yourmunicipality.

Enjoy wild animals such asraccoons, skunks, and foxes from

afar. Do not handle, feed, or unin-tentionally attract wild animals

with open garbage cans or liter.Prevent bats from entering living

quarters or occupied spaces inhomes, churches, schools and

other similar areas where they

might come in contact with peo-ple or pets.

Eastern High School will be

hosting the Bill Campbell Base-ball Classic by Brightview SeniorLiving on April 25. The tourna-ment will feature some of the tophigh school teams in the regioncomprising a wide swath of thesouthern New Jersey landscape.Eastern will meet Deptford, andHoly Cross will battle Egg HarborTownship in the opening round at10 a.m. with the winners to meetat 1 p.m.
