Our genomic project is well under way and you will be well informed in the coming months

as we are currently finalising a work plan. Preparations for the National Show 2016 are also in an advanced stage. We invite every member to join us, not only show enthusiasts, but everybody with respect for the Jersey breed.

We as council appreciate your support. We value imputs from experienced breeders. We wish every breeder the best of luck with their enterprise breeding Jerseys for tomorrow and setting an example for the dairy industry. From Jersey SA council and staff, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

phenotypes“Genomics have changed how dairies are run,” said Joåo Dürr, chief executive officer of the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding, while presenting at the American Jersey Cattle Association’s annual meeting.

Genetics and cattle management used to be separate domains. But, genomic evaluations are finally being seen as a management tool that bolsters producers’ decision-making process. “As the generation interval has shortened since 2009, young animals have come to rule the roost,” stated Dürr.

More and more, dairymen are using a heifer’s genetic snapshots to determine if its genes will be carried into future generations or if its genetic progress has reached the end of the road.

“These changes challenge the traditional business model. We all need to adapt to the reality of what’s in front of us,” added Dürr.

by AMANDA SMITH, Associate Editor.Hoard’s Dairyman Intel 2015

Yet, while genomics now play an integral role in many farms’ breeding decisions, Dürr noted that genotypes are not the most important data we have. “Phenotypes, or type traits, outrank genotypes. We need to continue collecting type trait data. Without it, genomics aren’t worth much.”

Furthermore, there is a need to share data and collaborate among breeds, both domestically and globally. “To enable better predictions, more information is needed,” said Dürr. More data, though, isn’t enough. “Reliable records are essential. Otherwise we have a garbage in, garbage out scenario,” he added.

With genomics has come an overwhelming demand for new services. “A lot of work is needed to train and retain young people as we continue to drive the field forward,” commented Dürr.

Genomic evaluations have become an essential tool in producers’ decision-making toolbox. Yet, without type traits, genomics aren’t worth much.

presies dieselfde sal wees.

teelwaardes. Geregistreerde Jersey kuddes se stam-

boominligting is baie volledig. In die Feb/Mrt 2015 LogixMelkGenetiese Ontleding was 215 aktiewe koeie (0.4%) se vaderinligting en 474

(0.96%) se moederinligting onbekend. Daar is egter

Ouderdomsgrense:

• Laktasie 1 : 15 – 36 maande• Laktasie 2 : 26 - 53 maande• Laktasie 3 : 38 – 67 maande

Produksiegrense:

Ten slotte:

lettertO the eDitOrDear Fellow Jersey BreedersIt is accepted that the “Danish Jersey System” is probably the most progressive and thorough cattle testing system, certainly in the Dairy world. That is because over 90% of cows are registered, milk recorded and as a result there are enough records from enough animals to make it meaningful. The proofs that come out of this team work provide detailed and reliable figures that allow the BREED AS A WHOLE to make huge strides in improvement for the worlds Jersey population. This same effort is reflected in other Jersey populations around the world. The common denominator between the Jersey populations that are making significant progress are registrations because allied to this comes milk recordings and therefore figures that are available to produce bulls and identify bull mothers that without, there can be NO PROGRESS.All major Jersey populations the world over are growing well against the general decline in other dairy breeds.Sadly this is not the case in SA.The failure to fully recognise the need for numbers and figures that produce the scientific backup for breed improvement is a black mark against us as breeders.Without the numbers of cows registered, and milk recorded there will simply not be enough figures to make meaningful progress at any level.Having said all that and having milk registered Jerseys on milk recording I recognise that there are a host of other issues that face SA farmers that the rest of the world does not have to contend with, such as a particularly hostile climate and Govt.Coupled with this there seems to be an unhealthy relationship between milk buyer and supplier, and a lack of honest communication between the two.It is acknowledged that the Jersey is the most efficient and productive dairy animal on the planet in its pure form.

Many SA dairy farmers seem hell bent on a path that I dont fully understand that dictates that whatever one is presented with they can do better. In other words being presented with the most efficient dairy animal in the world, lets now cross breed and produce the ugliest animal alive because if the Kiwis are doing it, it must be better! After all it is just a cash machine and nothing more.I have issue with that approach as it smacks of a lack of pride in dealing with a valued product(the jersey cow) and that age old dignified sense of wanting to breed the best, seems to be thrown out the window in the rush for a cash machine at all costs. In the economic crunch that dairy farmers constantly seem to be in, there are many more efficient ways of cutting costs than cancelling milk recording and registrations. These figures as costs of the total have time and again been proven to be miniscual in the scheme of dairy farming and are not real savers. To cancel registrations because one has issue with certain personalities involved with the breed is simply immature and detrimental to all.Probably the greatest “Breeder and genetisist” of all times Prof. Jan Bonsma said a man must measure. My intention in penning this letter is not to upset anyone but rather to appeal to the sensibilities I know exist in the majority of Jersey farmers out there, both commercial and stud to look for the greater picture for the breed .The only reason we have pure breeds left that have contributed to where we as a human race stand today are because gentlemen of old bred the best they could, but to do that they had to keep records.

Pure Jersey GreetingsCharles Cadman

The Highveld Jersey Club ended the year on a high note with the completion

of a successful on-farm herd challenge. The week’s judging ended in the

Kruger National Park, where contestants, judges and the club’s management,

friends and families, enjoyed a weekend together.

The judges, Niel Jansen van Rensburg and Pierre Coetzee, were impressed with the cows on display. “This year, we say farewell to Niel but welcome Pierre. Hopefully, we’ll see him next year too,” says Liezel Olivier, club secretary and one of the organisers of the on-farm challenge.

“I would like to thank all the contestants who took part in the challenge,” Liezel says. “We appreciate the efforts of all the farmers and their managers who made sure that the judges had a tough time deciding between the entrants.” She says the challenge would not have been possible

meal or snacks to the travelling group. “A special thanks to all the sponsors who joined in with cash and prizes, in particular Afgri. They sponsored the accommodation in Gravelotte, which included all the food and drinks.” Part of the fun was the unforgettable opportunity to watch a rhino feeding, which Leon Thom, a dairy farmer near Gravelotte, organised for the group.

After years of service on the club committee, Liezel also stepped down as club secretary this year. “As I say my farewell, we welcome Lientjie du Plooy to the Highveld Jersey family. I wish her luck and trust she will enjoy it as much as I have for the past few years.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO LEON THOM, THE OVERALL CHALLENGE WINNER

“We have selected the group of heifers for our farmer’s favourite entry based

on their pedigrees and their type. These heifers represent some of South Africa’s leading cow families such as

Molly, Fern, Benedictine and Lavonne, and include daughters of leading

international Jersey cow families, such as the Belle family from the USA. They

represent the kind of breeding we look to achieve in the future with daughters of genomic bulls included in the group

putting us at the forefront of genetic progress in the Jersey breed,”

says Christo.

Suid Afrikaanse situasie

Melkproduksie in Suid-Afrika toon reeds vir ‘n paar jaar stewige groei. Verskeie faktore dra by hiertoe.

the blenheim example

by DR JAPIE V.D WESTHUIZEN

An extremely successful milk production information day was recently held at Blenheim, the farm of Gerhard and Millie van Rensburg, winners of the 2014/15 Stud Book Logix Milk herd of the year.

The theme of the day was:

“Profit drivers in milk production”; with a subscript: do the opposite of the obvious.

The day was attended by more than 50 people, including 18 dairy farmers from the Eastern Cape. Gerhard and Andrew Masterson, breeder of Holstein and Jersey cattle from Oyster Bay shared their knowledge and experiences.

Gerhard keeps a pasture based dairy herd but, to counter drought and other adverse conditions, he also makes use of a cafeteria (Kempen, full feed free access to hay) system for some of his cows. This also enables him to expand vertically and optimise

the use of his resources and total investment. His margin on feed costs is basically the same for those cows on Kempen compared to those on pasture. The very clever shift of cows between the feeding systems enable him to evaluate the young ones first (first lactation) prior to moving them to tap their full potential when needed.

The first question addressed is: “What to do with a milk price that dropped as much as one Rand per kilogram?” Besides management options, change in genetic merit of cows has also contributed towards a shift in break-even point per kilogram milk produced.

Gerhard van Rensburg

Andrew Masterson

In practice, Gerhard focusses in selecting for profit in his cows. He therefore challenges all females to comply with his minimum standards of production, milk composition, female fertility, herd life (longevity), udder health and ease of management. An obvious consideration is the manner he gets paid by his milk buyer, in this case, Parmalat. Based on this information and with the help of Dr Bernice Mostert from SA Stud Book (responsible for the genetic evaluations of the dairy breeds in South Africa) he manages to rank animals on their genetic merit for profitability. This ranking is for his own cows as well as potential AI bulls.

The first test for females to be considered as replacements is their response in being able to calve early. She has to fit into the current average age at first calving for the herd of 22 and a half months of age. Similarly she has to fit into the reconception average being pregnant early. The average days in milk at first AI for the herd is 82 days. Females in first lactation do not have access to the Kempen system and have to produce at least 5 000kg of milk (305 days) to be considered in selection. Not only is calf mortality a non-event (only one calf lost in the last 4 years) but once considered in the herd, cows have to last very long. The investment in raising females is too high to carry non performers, justify high mortality for young calves and be subjected to high levels of involuntary culling. Involuntary culling levels is a mere 3.6% in the herd. In effect he has lowered the expense point for the calculation of margin over feed costs by almost 60 cents with these practices of severe

selection for profit drivers and recording all aspects related to management practices influencing margins. The lowering of the break-even point is over and above the extra income derived from the selling of females and breeding bulls to fellow dairy farmers. His extreme success with raising all female calves, early and regular female reproduction and functional herd life not only results in excess females but also ensures firm selection pressure to pick the most profitable females as replacements. Being a stud breeder also allows him to supply a market in need of properly genetically accessed and accurately selected replacement Jersey bulls. He keeps and raises the top 20% bull calves, based on their genetic merit. Animal sales add an extra 46 cents on his margin over feed costs on the milk sold, even if the additional costs of raising these calves are taken into account.

Gerhard made it very clear that just about all information needed resolve around the milk samples he takes every 5 weeks. Logix milk, the Stud Book service not only provides him with tools to select the right replacements and for his AI bull selection, but also provides all necessary information to make the right day to day and longer term management decisions. Taking part in this service only costs a mere 0.03 cents per kilogram milk produced in his herd. The somatic cell count in the bulk tank is restricted to less than 120 000 cells per millilitre. He uses the predictors from Logix Milk to monitor dry cow treatment, effectiveness of individual treatment and to keep track of the general herd and specific cow health in the herd. Preventative measures and very early signs for the possibility of sub clinical acidosis (especially cows on the Kempen system) is very important to Gerhard and Millie. The milk sample analysis with the informative graphs and cow action lists help with making timely decisions. It is of extreme importance to him to identify this when cows are still in sub clinical phases as the loss in revenue can be as high as 10 cents per litre. Of big importance is also to know the energy balance of each cow, especially in early lactation. This not only enables the maintenance of the desired calving interval (and using less semen straws per conception) but also ensures that cows reach their peak production and sustain the lactation curves. This is of special importance to firs calvers. The milk urea nitrogen analysis, reports and visual graphs of each cow also assist in making the right feeding decisions regarding precision protein and energy

feeding. It is possible to monitor the effects of early pasture growth and how to balance free flow protein, the effect of heat waves and any over- or under-supply of energy.

Although most milk buyers essentially favour volume in the price structure, a clear premium is paid for solids, in his case especially protein. Dairy producers are also awarded to produce milk with lower somatic cells and low bacterial counts. In preparation for this day Gerhard was again challenged to make sure how the payment system for his milk is constructed. A challenge he wants to extend to all fellow dairy producers.

Participants to the information day was treated to a very special event. Gerhard picked is top genetically superior cows and the bottom ones, based on their profitability

values, and displayed them with the assistance of Andrew Masterson. This part of the day draw active participation from the crowd. There were distinct differences between the two groups of cows. The profitable ones are roomier with capacity. The Blenheim herd does actively take part in showing animals but these cows would be able to stand their ground in any ring. Andrew treated everyone with clear pointers on what to look for when assessing the functionality of a dairy cow. Aspects that go hand in hand in cows to last and are typical of assuring more profit for their owners.

Sharing knowledge and assisting fellow dairy producers is extremely important for the dairy industry. This day also illustrated the importance of knowing exactly what the profit drivers in a herd are and how to assess each and every of these factors in making management decisions. There is no compromise for recording and benchmarking. The Blenheim herd is a prime example of how all these factors are taken into account and utilised to make optimal use of all the available resources while still enjoying milking Jersey cows.
