The information in this book includes many, but not all, of the organisations in Harrogate and Ripon (including Knaresborough, Boroughbridge, Masham, Pateley Bridge and Wetherby) that welcome volunteers. There are many ways to be involved in your local area – in fact the choice can be quite overwhelming! Remember, you are volunteering because you want to, so it’s important that you chose to do something that you enjoy. A good place to start when thinking about what to do as a volunteer can be to look at what interests or hobbies you already have. Do you enjoy art, reading or walking? Do you enjoy surfing the net or photography? Do you like visiting museums or gardening? The chances are that there will be a volunteering opportunity that mirrors things that you already like doing. However, it may be that you are volunteering for a change – maybe a change in career, or to meet some new people. In this case, think about what skills you would like to learn or develop, or the types of people you’d like to work with. If you know the type of thing you’d like to do already, but are not sure where you can volunteer, at the back of the booklet you’ll find lists of organisations grouped together under a theme – for example those that work with children, or work in conservation. You will then be able to look back in the book to find out a bit more about each one. To find out more about any of the organisations please contact us at the Volunteer Centre, or call the organisation directly – all the contact numbers and names are listed. You are more than welcome to contact them directly, without any obligation on your behalf. Alternatively, more information can be found on our website – www.harrogatecvs.org.uk/volunteering or www.riponcvs.couk or on the national volunteering website www.do-it.org.uk If you feel it would be useful to come in and discuss your ideas with us, or simply pick our brains about what might suit you, please contact us to make an appointment. The contact numbers are: Harrogate—01423 509004 or [email protected] Ripon– 01765 603631 or [email protected]
