Have you noticed some work going on at the Des Moines Donor Center? LifeServe Blood Center needs to fulfill several requirements for our plasma partner, LFB. One requirement is that our donor and patient testing areas need to be separated from each other. In order to do that, we need to build a new reference lab. Construction began on Monday, February 22nd and will continue for approximately 3 weeks. The new reference lab will be constructed on the first floor in the open space just north of the reception area and across from the HR offices. The contractor has been asked to complete the majority of the work in evening to limit disruptions to our donors. However, as with any construction project, there will be an increase in traffic in and out the building and noise throughout the day. We appreciate your patience and flexibility while the work is being done. We received the following message from a long time Sioux Center donor who brought

his son along to his double red appointment recently. This is just one more testament

to how many lives you touch by simply coming to work! Not only do we save lives (of

course!), but we also inspire the next generation and leave lasting memories for cur-

rent donors. Thank you to Micah, who gets a shout out in this donor note, and all of

our other wonderful LifeServe team members and volunteers who give WOW experi-

ences to our blood donors on a daily basis.

Hello LifeServe! This Thursday, I donated at Sioux Center and officially hit my 5 gal-lon mark! Thank you for serving so many people! Raymond came with me to learn about giving blood. The Life-Serve phlebotomist manning the double red donations was named Micah. Oh my, he was a ROCKSTAR. He an-swered every question Raymond had and Raymond got to sit next to me during my double red donation. The pic-ture is of Micah and Ray, and Ray is holding my donation. He was so excited to be there with me, and the hour was a learning success in a large part because of Micah's willingness to also slip into “teacher mode.”

Welcome New Volunteers!

This picture of the Freedom Rock—just north of Greenfield on Highway 25—was taken by volunteer Wendell Shellabarger after a blood delivery to the hospital there in February.

Recognize this guy? Joe D’Souza , a longtime donor and supporter of LifeServe Blood Center became a volunteer driver. The picture in the background hangs over the donor floor at the Des Moines Donor Center—where Joe watches over the people he sends in to donate!

Erin Haafke visited friends and regular blood donors in Denver, CO. On a walk around the neighborhood, she stopped in-to their headquarters for a peak. Too bad you can’t see the mountains in this picture!

Zika and Protecting the Blood Supply

The Zika virus continues to be a buzzword in national and local news, and many LifeServers have asked what we’re doing to keep the blood supply safe. Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that causes a mild illness in most people, but can cause birth defects in unborn children if a pregnant women is infected. The good news is that the mosquito that carries Zika, the Aedes mosquito, is not found in our part of the country. While Iowans have been diagnosed with Zika, the virus was not contract-ed here in any of the positive cases. As a precaution and at the FDA’s urging, LifeServe is deferring blood donors who have visited Mexico, the Carib-bean, Central America, South America, Samoa or any other “Zika area” in the past 28 days. Blood transfusions are still completely safe for hospital patients to receive, as our routine screening questions doubled with the travel deferral would defer a donor who had any symptoms.

Volunteers and team members are walking south (with some imagination) and we’re currently in Texas (only about 350 miles from Mexico). We imagine it’s getting quite a bit warmer as we walk now! Volunteers Marilyn Hydrick and Burl Pierce are avid walkers and have been helping move our crew forward. Send us your steps, miles, or times through the end of March to support our mission of reaching a fun spring break destination!

Why Walk? Wellness Words:

Going for a walk? Don't wear running sneakers! According to Michele Stan-ten, author of Walk Off Weight, walkers should opt for flexible, lightweight walk-ing sneakers that you can twist with your hands. Running sneakers are stiff and that can make the rolling action of walking difficult.

Don't carry hand weights! Stanten says two to five pound dumbbells don't create enough resistance to develop meaningful changes in strength, yet they're heavy enough to risk shoulder injury.

Don't go too slow! A study tracked 39,000 recreational walkers over 10 years and found that for every minute that participants shaved off a mile-long walk, their risk of premature death decreased by 1.8 percent.
