3Message From Our President

Board President, Dr. Al Cohn

Hello, Temple family.

I hope this message finds each of you well, and I trust that each of you are uncovering yourselves from the pollen and matzah farfel of the season. With the arrival of May comes the near-end of our school year and the near completion of our fiscal year, both which have been an unmitigated success despite this unique year of transition.

1. Finances. Because we have only had Cantor Roskin as our sole clergy this past year, our overall salary expenses have been substantially less than in years past (when we have

had multiple clergy members). This has allowed for some budgetary “breathing room” over this past year, and your Temple Board is actively involved in budgeting for this coming year when we will once again resume costs of both a Senior Rabbi and a Cantor. With our desire to continue growing engagement opportunities for our entire Temple family and a continued

focus on Youth & Education, we are actively working with our Treasurer and finance teams to put forth a three-year plan that anticipates known expenses and puts us in position to be both fiscally responsible and foresighted regarding staffing decisions for coming years. I anticipate further updates about our financial status to be forthcoming, and am so appreciative to the lay leaders who are helping steer these conversations.

2. Engagement opportunities. Temple Emanu-El continues to put forth significant energy and resources to help foster meaningful engagement opportunities across all age demographics. Our efforts in creating meaningful relationships and personal growth via the inception of Temple Circles, our intentional focus on small groups of similar interest, continues to gain sense of purpose and organizational momentum. The list of creative, new programs and opportunities facilitated by our Director of Congregational Engagement, Monika Singletary, grows larger with each month and her efforts are resonating with so many of our Temple family members.

3. Rabbi Wright. I have never been more confident in our congregation’s decision to select Rabbi Adam Wright to be our next Senior Rabbi. His commitment to our Temple is already evident as he participates (via Skype) in weekly Senior Staff meetings and has ongoing dialogue with Temple leadership, clergy, and administrative staff to ensure he is kept up-to-date with all relevant issues. Rabbi Wright and the Temple staff are working diligently to ensure that he is able to hit-the-ground-running upon his arrival, and Ronne Hesse is collaborating closely with Rabbi Wright (and the entire Temple staff) to ensure a thoughtful welcome and transition to Temple Emanu-El. I look forward to sharing opportunities for all of us to show off the hospitality and welcoming nature our Temple is known to exhibit upon his arrival this summer.

4. Cantor Roskin. As this 12-month run with Cantor Roskin as our sole clergy comes to a foreseeable conclusion, her immense capability and profound love for our congregation is perhaps more evident now than ever before. Of note, Cantor Roskin will be returning to her alma mater in early May to be awarded an honorary doctorate degree for her 25 years of devoted service as a cantor, twenty of which have been with us at Temple Emanu-El. Please join me in wishing her a hearty mazel tov on this prestigious honor along with expressing ongoing gratitude for her steadfast leadership. We look forward to celebrating her twenty years of service at our Temple more formally at our annual meeting this on Friday evening, June 7.

The mission of Temple Emanu-El is: Seek. Engage. Transform. Your Temple leadership and staff remain committed to these ideals and spend hours thinking about how to be good stewards of this three-word call to action. I am proud of all that our congregation has accomplished during this time of transition and am grateful to the many people who have stepped up during this Year of Engagement. I know that each of you share my excitement as we look forward together and prepare to turn the page on the next chapter of our Temple.

Respectfully,

Al Cohn

President, Temple Emanu-El

Pathways

The mission of Pathways is to end homelessness for women and children through hospitality, housing and hope. They offer a range of transitional and long-term services for homeless women and children. Through its downtown Day Center, the agency provides food, clothing, showers, laundry facilities and case management. Pathways operates a rapid rehousing program for women with children. The agency’s Safe Haven program provides permanent, supportive housing for chronically homeless women with a mental illness. This program is the only one of its kind for women in Alabama.Over the years, it has become obvious that families need more than shelter to escape homelessness. Pathways also provides a program called Invest in You which merges key elements of the former Employment Readiness and Fiscally Fit programs while meeting the needs of our ever-changing population.With this continuum of services, Pathways provides housing and supportive services for 1,200-1,500 women and children annually.

8 Youth & Education

In the month of May, we both commemorate and celebrate. Yom Hashoah, the commemoration of the Holocaust is one week prior to Yom Ha’Atzmaut, the celebration of the creation of the State of Israel. As we rejoice in the 71st birthday of The State of Israel, I share this message with you written by Rabbi Bernhard Rosenberg; one of inspiration, insight and significance.

At the 2014 Oscars, they celebrated the 75th anniversary of the release of the "Wizard of Oz" by having Pink sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” But what few people realized, while listening to that incredible performer singing that unforgettable song, is that the music is deeply embedded in the Jewish experience. It is no accident, for example, that the greatest Christmas songs of all time, were written by Jews. For example, "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was written by Johnny Marks and "White Christmas" was penned by a Jewish

liturgical singer's (cantor's) son, Irving Berlin.

But perhaps the most poignant song emerging out of the mass exodus from Europe was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". The lyrics were written by Yip Harburg. He was the youngest of four children born to Russian Jewish immigrants. His real name was Isadore Hochberg and he grew up in a Yiddish speaking, Orthodox Jewish home in New York.

The music was written by Harold Arlen, a cantor's son. His real name was Hyman Arluck and his parents were from Lithuania Together, Hochberg and Arluck wrote "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which was voted the 20th century's number one song by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). In writing it, the two men reached deep into their immigrant Jewish consciousness - framed by the pogroms of the past and the Holocaust about to happen - and wrote an unforgettable melody set to near prophetic words.

Read the lyrics in their Jewish context and suddenly the words are no longer about wizards and Oz, but about Jewish survival:

* * * * * * * *Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,

There's a land that I heard of, once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,

And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me.

Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney topsThat's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow, why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow Why, oh why can't I?

* * * * * * * *

The Jews of Europe could not fly. They could not escape beyond the rainbow. Harburg was almost prescient when he talked about wanting to fly like a bluebird away from the "chimney tops." In the post-Auschwitz era, chimney tops have taken on a whole different meaning than the one they had at the beginning of 1939.

Pink's mom is Judith Kugel. She's Jewish of Lithuanian background. As Pink was belting the Harburg/Arlen song from the stage at the Academy Awards, Pink’s mother wasn't thinking about the movie. She was thinking about Europe's lost Jews and the immigrants to America. She was then struck by the irony that for two thousand years the land that the Jews heard of "once in a lullaby" was not America, but Israel. The remarkable thing would be that less than ten years after "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was first published, the exile was over, and the State of Israel was reborn. Perhaps the "dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
