Just let go of the extra baggage.―Nagbabago na yata kayo ah.‖

This is a statement often uttered by the people in

Sampaguita Hall every time the officers of the organi-

zation visit them and have a talk. What a really re-freshing thing to hear amidst all the pressures being

laid to us by our not-so-good performance in the pre-

vious times.

Changing to something more dynamic, innova-

tive and excellent is what the current officers aim for.

Always being told that there were once a time that

SAVE-NE was once included in the university’s list

of top performing organizations gave us the motiva-

tion that if they could do back then, why not now? However, the problem was that not all members

are willing to devote their time and effort to the suc-

cessful fulfillment of the SAVE-NE’s mission. They

were like the crabs that would pull each other down

just so that nobody gets outside of the basket.

The only option remaining was to get rid of the

extra baggage in order for the organization to soar

high and reach the top. Dr. Danilo S. Vargas, SAVE-

NE’s mentor when in comes to planning suggested

such action and said that if all the members of the cir-

cle which includes the officers and a handful of de-

voted members dedicate their effort to the achieve-

ment of goals, we would surely be able to grab the

trophy.

And now that a fresher perspective has been

shown, we no longer have an excuse for mediocrity.

With all the resources other organizations wish they

could have access to, the ship is ready to sail with

only a few personnel who would endure, enjoy and

encounter this challenging expedition to vast oceans.

“With all the resources other organizationswish they could have access to, the ship is

ready to sail with only a few personnel…”

No rain, No rainbow

By Werlo M. Palomar

A Choice to make.Nobody has the proper authority to dictate each

one of us who we are and who we should be. Using

existentialist view, it is our own actions that make up

what we are. We are condemned

to suffer the consequences of such actions.

If we choose to be passive, just waiting for

something or someone to push for us to move, we'll

never reach our target destination in the fastest way

possible. It is our own fault that we ended up un-

known to the people around us. Up to now, we still

have the choice to continue this way.

But we could choose to excel. Unleash the vol-

unteer inside each one of us, not waiting to be toldwhat to do because we have the initiative to act. We

commit ourselves to be the leaders who make other

leaders.

As for now, we are still at the bottom. But with

all these resources, especially the knowledge, skill

and servant leader in each one of us, together with the

values our mentors bestow upon us and an environ-

ment that would care for the

birth of a new SAVE NE, wecould surely reach the top!

SAVE the best for a new start. The organization has been existing for eight

years now. SAVE NE stands for Society for the

Advancement of Volunteerism and Excellence –

Nueva Ecija and I would like

to give emphasis for the most

relevant words in its acronym:

Society, Advancement, Volunteerism and Excel-

lence.

Our society is composed of close to 300 mem-

bers, quite a big population, right? If we want to

adhere to what is stated in the name of our organiza-

tion: Advancement, Volunteerism and Excellence; we

should act voluntarily in order to advance and excel.

There is no other way to go but upward and for-

ward. We have plenty of resources, manpower, sup-

port from our networks, experiences, skills and capa-

bilities but we should exhibit the character and the

commitment in loving our organization.

We are excellent in our own but we should find

ways to contribute to the excellence of the entire or-

ganization. I believe the Academic Year 2010-2011

has been a great foundation for the upcoming years of

SAVE NE.

I would like to express my grati-

tude to my co-officers, all year-

level representatives, collegerepresentatives, and active members who continue to

be with us. I thank Jamie Richie Sy and Russel Balag-

tas (Vice Presidents), Angeline Villegas (Secretary),

SAVE NE Officers attend Planning Workshop.By Werlo M. Palomar

The officers of SAVE NE attended a work-

shop on planning techniques at Sampaguita Hall,

Joseph Rice Mill Compound San Jose City on De-

cember 9 last year in order to create an action

plan for the 2nd

semester of 2010-2011 and 1st

se-

mester of 2011-2012.

The workshop was

held to train officers in

the proper usage of vari-

ous techniques in the

planning process thatwould be useful in facili-

tating a specific activity

or managing the organi-

zation as a whole.

They were trained

by SAVENE’s mentor,

Dr. Danilo S. Vargas; a

teacher of Radio Broad-

casting at CLSU’s Devel-

opment Communication

Department and works at

the Research Extension

and Training office.

The officers were

taught on grouping the

existing and planned ac-

tivities into the categories

by the Office of StudentAffairs which is Organ-

izational Development,

Educational, Community

Service and Socio-

Cultural.

Details for each ac-

tivity was then added

which are the objectives,

target output, venue, re-

source requirements, cli-

entele and the time

frame; thus, creating a

basis for a permit for

each activity.

These information

were then compiled and a

new action plan was for-

mulated which would be

utilized by the members

in the facilitation of ac-

tivities and would be rec-onciled with the Nueva

Ecija Sustainable Devel-

opment Foundation In-

corporated’s (NESDFI)

action plan.

The officers intends

to use this action plan

and revise it for the next

set of members who

would assume position in

the organization and

would help in makingadjustments.

The Game of Life: FF13By Werlo M. Palomar

In any video game, strategy

is always the key to win. It could

be reaching the treasure, subdu-

ing your enemy to ashes, saving

the princess or just simply hitting

the highest score. The game Fi-

nal Fantasy XIII (FF13) by

Square-Enix for the Playstation 3

and Xbox 360 released in the

spring of 2010 is of no excep-

tion.

Being a role-playing game

(RPG), FF13 relies on the proper

customization of

the playable char-

acters in order to

beat the game.

Adding-up an interesting story

makes the characters more so-

phisticated than just mere toys.

Players get a sense of managingsomeone else’s life and making

sure they do well in the group for

the purpose of saving the world.

The battle system is so complex

yet dubbed so simple in could

even be applied to real life situa-

tion like running an organization.

This system involves 6 prin-

cipal Roles or ―Jobs‖ which youmay normally see in an organiza-

tion. Here is a brief description

of each one:

(1) Commando – They are

the attackers who use their weap-

ons do deal damage to the en-

emy. All they do is hack and

slash, shoot with a gun, punch,

kick or even hurl a boomerang.

In an organization these are the

members who face each problem

head-on. They have the courage

to take-on the tasks and the con-

fidence that they would ―beat‖ it.

In the game and in real world,

these people normally become

the party leaders.

(2) Sentinel

–  These

ones use

their de-

fense as

a greatw e a p o n .

They wait for the oppo-

nent to attack to counter

them. Loaded with protec-

tive capabilities, these guys also

provoke enemies to attack them

instead of their mates. In real

life, these are the ones who wait

for an opportunity to arise toexecute their abilities. They are

also martyrs who take activities

when nobody else wants it; they

are willing to suffer just so heir

co-members don’t have much

burden.

(3) Ravager – Spell casters

who bombard the enemy with

offensive magic. In the organiza-

tion, they are the bunch who may

not have the strength to carry out

a task but has the mind to think

up all the ideas needed. Often

they stay away from the problem

in order for them to think clearly

and pile-up their ideas to formu-

late a solution, although much

of them needs physical help

when it accomplish-

ing goals.

(4) Medic  –  These are

the clerics

whose pri-

mary purpose

is to heal the

wounds of his/her al-

lies. These personsare the ones who repair the dam-

age done by the problem. They

task may seem easy but their ex-

istence is essential to the fulfill-

ment of an activity. They are the

―unsung heroes‖ of then bunch.

(5) Synergist  –  Enhancers

who cast supportive spells that

alter the status of a character to amore advantageous position.

They can be the tide-turners

when in comes to really sticky

situations. In the organization,

these are the people who have

good communication skills that

can cheer-up anybody in just a few

minutes.

(6) Saboteurs  –  Ones who

give the enemy some status ail-

ments to make them softer to at-

tack. These people do some re-

search about the enemy and find-

ing their weakness. They aresometimes called ―spies‖. The

knowledge they gain and the fact

that they could simplify a certain

problem make them a fair addition

to the party. Along with the syner-

gist, they may be the main support

(Continued from page 6)

staff but they could spell the dif-

ference in the success or failure of

the task.

However, in any video game

and in life, proper harmony is the

key. FF13 has the so-called Para-

digm System which is how you

define the role of each member. In

real life, not everyone could take a

specific role but can be able to as-

sume two different roles. These are

emphasized in Paradigm Shifts or

designing a battle strategy that

would work specifically for the

problem. Picking who does what

and how he/she would do it is

clearly the task in the game which

is a lot similar to the management

of an organization.

In the end, we realize it may

not be as simple as it seems. But

knowing what your capabilities are

and making a plan on how it

would work in combination with

the others could just be what you

need. See! Playing videogames

gives you a little more knowledge

than how to whack zombies using

peashooters.

Dawn of a New BeginningBy Lauren Erika A. De Leon

Another semester is about to

end as well as my stay here at

CLSU.

Being a graduating student

carries a lot of pressure such as

Field Practice, Narrative report,

and completion of graduation re-

quirements but it also has a whole

lot of excitement and bonding ses-

sions with my blockmates and

friends.

My last semester here at

CLSU had been filled with lots of

ups and downs from all aspects –

from my studies up to my personal

life.

As a graduating student I took

my field practice and from there I

learned a lot and experienced the

real world of business. It was very

challenging but also enjoyable. I

was able to widen my network and

gain new friends. From the intern-

ship, I can say that I am now more

confident in facing the bigger

world.

Although I am eager to

graduate and face the real world, a

part of me is feeling sad for going

separate ways with my friends,

whom I have shared a lot of hard-

ships and joy, is very hard.

Talking about plans after

graduation and remembering the

past eight semesters we had shared

are our favorite topics whenever

my classmates and I meet. We al-

ways take pictures to treasure our

last sem at our Alma Mater.

One more thing that I will

surely miss is SAVE-NE.

I am not a very active mem-

ber that attends to each and every

meeting and activity but now that I

am in my last semester, I always

make it a point to fulfill my obli-

gations as a member by actively

participating in any endeavor our

organization engages in.

My last year as a member of

SAVE-NE is truly worth remem-

bering for this last year made me

realize that being in SAVE-NE is

Ligaw na ParuparoNi Cristy I. Alvior

Unang araw ng taon, malamigang simoy ng hangin. Kailan-

gang simulan ng maayos ang panibagong taon.

Agad kong tinungo ang bintana at doo‟y tuma-

naw. Makulimlim ngunit wala namang nagbabad-

yang ulan. Isang paruparo ang pumukaw sa aking

pansin. Katamtaman ang laki… makulaya...

malikot.. .nakatutuwang

pagmasdan… Patakbo akong lumabas

upang lapitan ang paru-

parong tila naghahanap ng

madadapuan. Kamangha-

mangha ang kombinasyon

ng mga kulay nito.

Lumipad-lipad ang

munting paruparo paikoy saaking kinatatayuan. Para bang nais niya akong

kilalanin, makausap, at makalaro.

man niya naisin.

pas. “Ang paruparo ay sim-

bolo ng pag-ibig. May ma-

kulay, mayroon naming

hindi. Hindi na kailangang

hanapin sapagkat kusa

itong dumarating lalo na sa

panahong hindi natininaasahan. Ngunit hindi lahat ng paruparo na ma-

kikita mo ay para sa „yo. May mga paruparo na

tila naliligaw lang at mapapadan. Dapat maging

maingat sapagkat sila‟y nakabubulag.”

Bigla na lang akong napangiti habang si-

nusundan ng tingin ang paruparong parang kan-

ina lang ay nasa mga palad ko pa. Malayo man

The Ride by Jonalyn T. Ruiz

During an unexpected night, I saw you

To an unforgettable ride, where I sat in front of you

Everybody was in a hurry; I’m too little but too luck

Because I was just next to you.

In the middle of our ride I caught you looking at me

Made me feel so conscious of what you think of m

Do I look beautiful and good or ugly and untidy?

As my hair blown by the wind so cold. . .

How I wish the wheels won’t stop turning

Sad to know you’re leaving

I wanted so say goodbye or even just a simple hi

My eyes was with you, till the darkness hide you

away from me..

When I got home, my mind was still with you

Telling to myself that there will be tomorrow

and I will see you again

That night I can’t sleep and it made me feel so sick.

But I was wondering why, it’s been months ago

But I kept on searching

and kept on finding

Till a friend told to me, I should stop what I am doing

I lost my faith, and I lost my hope that I will know you

I never thought that was the first and last. . .

That I can take a look at you ;(

fun and fulfilling, it made me loved our organizationeven more.

So as my final curtain call and as the dawn of a

new beginning of my life starts I would like to take

this opportunity to at least let my colleagues know

that being a member of this organization is not just a

footnote in my life, it is a chapter in my life.
