Katrina did a fantastic job of organizing the literature table, staffing it, and being there personally through a major part of the conference. There were so many people that helped out at the table I’m afraid I can’t name everyone, but you all did a great job for the organization. We handed out lots of literature, had great conversations, and answered many questions. The literature table was a center of gravity and a real anchor in the trade show. Anna Swora

Anna lives outside of Philadelphia,PA near family and friends. Last April Ihad the pleasure of meeting her at theOPA Retreat in Monterey! In 1973 a friend offered her an astro-logical reading and since then Anna hadheld an inter-est in astrol-ogy. Shortlythereafter shepurchasedSakoian andAcker’s As-trologersHandbook andbegan studyingon her own.She majored infilm and madea career infilm-making,while continuing her study of astrology.Anna worked for PBS and won severalawards from the Corporation for PublicBroadcasting for documentaries on theenvironment.Using astrology in her own therapeu-tic process led her to becoming a profes-sional astrologer in 1996 working intandem with therapists and their clients. She started studying Glenn Perry’s ma-terial in 1996 and in 1998 enrolled in aprogram offered in TranspersonalCounseling offered through The UnionInstitute and the Center for Transfor-mational Studies.Anna has been involved in co-facili-tating two separate groups. The first onestudied the Perennial Path, based on thework of KenWilber, in which she over-laid astrology onto the group process, aswell as onto individual charts. She alsoco-facilitated a study group on the workof John Briggs (author of books onchaos theory and the creative process)and John Amoroso (Transpersonal Psy-chotherapist) where she once againbrought astrology into the individualand group processes.Psychological astrology remainsAnna’s passion! It is the focus for thevalue she finds in astrology, and shareswith others today.

Stephanie Telesco

True to her Gemini Ascendant andMoon, Stephanie enjoys a dual career!Astrology has been passion since herfirst formal astrology reading in 1972.She grew up in the Philippines; a coun-try she says loves all things esoteric. Inthe mid 1980’s she began taking classesin astrology and doing charts, some-thing that she stills enjoys doing morethan anything else. Currently she is tak-ing John Frawley’s traditional, classicalastrology course, based on Lily’s work. This has richly enriched her practiceand expanded her knowledge of astrol-ogy, while satisfying her endless intel-lectual curiosity. She says “people wantand appreciate hearing the truths intheir charts”With her husband, Stephanie hasowned and operated The Brick OvenBistro in Boise, ID -recently celebrating

25 years ofbusiness.Therestaurantprovides herwith manyopportunitiesto researchastrology inaction, fromstaff horo-scopes todaily eventsreflecting as-trologicalsymbols.Recently

Stephanie and her husband purchased ahome in Nicaragua as their retirementretreat, where she looks forward to con-tinuing her astrology work and practice- maybe even hold events there in thefuture.Stephanie’s first OPA retreat wasthree years ago on Sanibel Island. She isimmensely grateful to OPA; being partof the organization and attending theretreats have made a huge difference inher astrology practice. We look forwardto seeing her again next year!

Geri Bellino

Geri found her way to astrology in theearly 1980’s in New York City. While intherapy herself, a friend referred her toan astrologer. She was totally impressedand returned annually for a consultation.Synchronistically, she also met her Jun-gian therapist through her astrologer. She calls herself an “intuitive” as-trologer though she dislikes labels. Herwork is about lifting people up and pro-viding them with courage and hope, notfear. Currently, she is involved in a cou-ple of peer groups, one in Colorado andone via Skype. Both are with SandraLeigh Serio, a friend and mentor whohas made a big difference in her astrol-ogy path. The OPA conference in Aprilwas a turning point for Geri’s life andcareer. After retuning from the retreat, she started her professional astrologicalpractice! For 25 years, Geri has been involved

in video and film production. Hermaster’s degree is in communicationand she has worked closely within thecollege and university system. In 2004she was transferred to Denver, whichshe now calls home. She is involvedwith the metaphysical community inDenver and has many friends within it.Geri is also taking Robert Corre’s online class and expanding her astrologicalhorizons while working on her web-site.We wish you great success in all ofyour endeavors!

Laura Ann La RocheLaura Ann’s earliest memory of astrol-ogy was when she was two and one-halfyears old! Her mom always read thefunnies and horoscopes in their locallynewspaper. She taught Laura Ann toread the alphabet by reading the news-paper, including the horoscope columns. She has always been interested in thelarger picture of life and as a small childlooked at the sky and called it God’s“star map” of heaven. Although she wasraised in a devout Catholic family, herfather took out a sun-sign book fromthe library for her at the age of six aftera temper tantrum regarding a horoscopecolumn. Apparently, Laura Ann did notagree with what was written. It was thelocal librarian who suggested she shouldbegin engaging her innate interest in as-trology.Nuns and priests were a regular partof her early life and Laura Ann enjoyedengaging them in debate. One day sheshared her rebellious ideas about thestars and moon with their family priestwho calmly advised her to “never talkabout this to anyone”. So she did formany, many years. During her fourthpregnancy, a friend gave her a gift cer-tificate for an astrology session withMarcello Gallupi. Although his prophe-sies aggravated her at the time, heturned not only to be correct, but also tobe her first astrology instructor.Theystudied together for fourteen years, untilMarcello’s death. Laura Ann then stud-ied with Aaron Hopkins and Noel Tyl.After a long career as a nurse, LauraAnn now is a professional astrologer.Meeting Glenn Perry altered her pathand now she ispursuing a ca-reer in psychol-ogy as well asseeking certifi-cation as a lifecoach. Her as-trology practicelargely consistsof couples, small businessand health careprofessionals.Through writ-ing and speak-

ing Laura Ann bridges the gap for all ofthe misconceptions of astrology and thepublic, especially with clergymen andwomen of all faiths to bring clarity andtruth to people.Thank you for yourvaluable contributions, Laura Ann!

Beverly Reynolds

Beverly lives in Rhode Island and isan old time New Englander. As a younggirl she was always fascinated by theskies. On her first ever visit to a plane-tarium she was stunned by the magnifi-cence of it and became lost in its entiresplendor…literally. The teachers re-turned tofind herstill gazingat the sky.Whenshe dis-coveredthat shewas a Leo,around theage of 10or 12, shebegunreadingmagazinesand allkinds ofbits andpiecesabout as-trology.Four orfive yearsago, Bev-erly met Jacqueline Janes and was stungby the astrology bug. Her mentor since,Jacqueline encouraged her to explorenew paths for learning astrology.ThusBeverly found her way to the OPA re-treat last spring.Beverly has an affinity for horary as-trology and enjoys working with solarreturn charts. She is continuing her ed-ucation, as she wishes for greater struc-ture to support her intuitive work withastrology. Beverly was deeply touchedby the generosity and sharing of theOPA leaders at the retreat. She appreci-ated the unity of the OPA family andthe tremendous opportunity to bondwith others

with such energy for the good of thewhole. I completely agree!

Dvora Weil

Dvora lives in Calabasas, CA whereshe enjoys a successful psychotherapistpractice alongside being an astrologer. She refers to herself and an astrologicalpsychotherapist. She began her astro-logical studies in 1975 while working asa flight attendant for El Al and living inTel Aviv, Israel. There she found a wellknown teacher with whomshe studied with for thenext eight years.Dvora completed a doc-toral program at PacificaGraduate Institute, writingher dissertation on the ap-plication of astrology inmainstream psychotherapy. She has since used thechart as an agnostic tool forlicensed psychotherapist. She sees the horoscope as a“blue print of the psyche”, afantastic diagnostic toolwhich can quickly access anindividuals’ core issues.Dvora feels that her true mission, heal-ing people through use of the symboliclanguage of astrology, is gaining mo-mentum after so many years of using as-trology charts with her clients. She alsorecently received her certification as anImago Relationship Therapist. This year Dvora will be starting toteach classes at the American JewishUniversity in Los Angeles. They askedher to teach astrology and psychology intheir adult education program. It seemsthe Carl Jung’s prophecy, that one dayastrology will be taught in the universi-ties, is beginning to materialize. She isthrilled that the universe has chosen heras a vehicle for introducing astrology toa wider audience! It is an honor to be ina position where she has the opportu-nity to increase the credibility of astrol-ogy while breaking the myths ofcocktail astrology. “The astrologicalchart is for the field of psychology whatthe x-ray is to the field of medicine”.

Well said, Dvora.Wishingyou continued success asyou embark on your teach-ing career in building thebridge between astrologyand psychology!

Anne Carpenter

Anne came to the OPAretreat from Bolton, Eng-land, where she currentlyresides. Since retiring fromher career several years ago,Anne has plunged herselfinto the university and itsacademic world once again.

She has also been participat-ing in Glenn Perry’s AAPcourse. Having completed adegree in philosophy, Annecontinued on to do a profes-sional graduate diploma inteaching! As part of thiscourse, she taught a fifteenweek astrology class in thecommunity while being ob-served and thoroughly en-joyed it. Gratefully, she wasable to use much of the ma-terial in Glenn Perry’s man-ual.Anne started to study as-trology in the late 1970’s after

her divorce. She was searching fordeeper meaning and sought out severalpaths, astrology being one of them. In1992 she completed the program of-fered by the Faculty of AstrologicalStudies in England. Then in 2005 shegained Glenn Perry’s AAP certificateand is now registered for the MA andPhD portion of the program. Yes,Anne has Saturn in the 9th house! Lastyear she was invited to conduct a halfday workshop at a retreat on archetypesand served as the resident astrologerduring the course of the entire retreat.Being in psychotherapy herself duringthe last couple of years, she ha found as-trology to be a very useful and powerfultool. For Anne, working with archetypesand synchronicities is a particularly ex-citing area of interest. In the future, shehopes to continue using her skills bothteaching and sharing insights offered byastrology with clients. We look forwardto welcoming Anne back to California

and the OPA family in2010!

Natasha Zaslove

It was a pleasure meetingNatasha in Asilomar lastspring at the OPA retreat.Currently she lives andworks in Sedona, AZ. In2007 Natasha officiallybegan her astrological stud-ies though her interest inastrology dates back to hercollege years. Her upbringinggroomed her for a more tra-ditional, professional path.

Eventually she pursued a career as anattorney and for years enjoyed profes-sional success as a lawyer. In addition,Natasha is a yoga instructor and in-volved in the holistic health field.During the last couple of years,Natasha has been doing many charts forfriends and family and continues ex-panding her astrological knowledge. While attending The Blast in 2008 sherealized how much more there is tolearn in the various fields of astrology.Right now she is participating in RobertCorre’s on-line class and is really enjoy-ing the process….quantify, quantify, quantify! She also values working withthe asteroids and Lilith. Her hope and vision is to work withprofessionals and business individuals.Natasha loves working with astrologyand finds it extremely fulfilling! Sheappreciates astrology as a divination tooland spiritual practice. It is wonderful tohave you as a member of our astrologi-cal family.Welcome!

I met Jennifer once, briefly, at asocial

event at OPA 2009. I remember a

warm, smiling woman. Having grown up

in Texas, on hearing her voice with that

familiar accent I remember looking to

see who it was.

Now, I will remember the generosity and

thoughtfulness she showed in the

midst of a devastating time. She

wanted her paid registration to ISAR to

be given as a scholarship to someone,

and as a result I will be attending the

conference. This gift means somuch to

me and I am very grateful.

Thank you, Jennifer. You will be a

presence in my mind and heart, and Ihonor you.

Nancy Fisher

Ready or Not, Some Day ItWill All Come to An EndThere will be no more sunrises, no

minutes, hours or days. All the thingsyou collected, whether treasured orforgotten, will pass to someone else.Your wealth, fame and temporal

power will shrivel to irrelevance. It willnot matter what you owned or what

you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, andjealousies will finally disappear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire. The winsand losses that once seemed so

important will fade away. It won’tmatter where you came from, or onwhat side of the tracks you lived, atthe end. It won’t matter whether youwere beautiful or brilliant. Even your

gender and skin color will beirrelevant.

So what will matter? How will thevalue of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you

bought, but what you built; not whatyou got but what you gave. What willmatter is not your success, but yoursignificance. What will matter is notwhat you learned, but what your

taught. What will matter is every actof integrity, compassion, courage orsacrifice that enriched, empowered orencouraged others to emulate your

example.

What will matter i not yourcompetence, but your character. Whatwill matter is not how many peopleyou knew, by how many will feel a

lasting loss when you are gone. Whatwill matter is not your memories, butthe memories that live in those wholoved you. What will matter is howlong you will be remembered, by

whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn'thappen by accident. It’s not a matter

of circumstance but of choice.

Choose to live a life that matters ...

We make a living by what we get; weshould make a life by what we give. It’s true that we don’t know what

we’ve got until we lose it, but it’s alsotrue that we don't’ know what we’ve

been missing until it arrives.

Life can give you a hundred reasons tocry, but you can give life a thousand

reasons to smile.

In loving memory of Jennifer Bobbitt,my roommate at the 2009 OPA

Astrologer’s Retreat.

Sheila McGinty

I have thought so often of Jennifer Bobbit since her departure from usbecause she was such a bright light wherever she went and particularlyin our specific Asilomar training group last April. We all loved herenthusiastic participation and the love she shared with us, not only herlove of Astrology but her love for each one of us. It was such a joy to bein her presence. She was also in my same ISAR Consulting SkillsTraining group at UAC so I had developed a deep resonance with her

inner beauty. We know she will also brighten every group she encounterson her present journey. Somehow I feel better for having known her here on

earth. Jennifer, we bid you safe travels and much love in return for what you gave us.Chris McRae, Team Leader

Right before Jenniferwent into the

hospital, thinking shewould be going

through chemo, shehad her hair cut.

These were taken atthe salon by Leah, her good friend and

hairdresser.

JuneMorrow did a great job of run-ning out every day to get more suppliesfor the OPA social gatherings that wehad every night,The evening OPA par-ties seemed to gather more people everynight and the last night we had manypeople from AFAN join us; FrankPiechoski brought a healthy supply offood and drink down from the AFANsuite so many morepeople joined us; it isfair to say that a goodtime was had by all.At the end of theconference, Sundaymorning, I met withGraceMorris, andthe heads ofNCGR,AFAN and ISAR todiscuss the new or-ganization thatNCGR is forming called PAA (Profes-sional Astrologers Association); the ideabehind this meeting was to discuss theways that we can all work together inthe future and how to avoid duplicatingeach other’s tasks. The meeting was fer-tile and it seems that, as an organization,OPA has much to offer to the other na-tional and international astrology organ-izations. I’ll keep you posted as thingsdevelop further. The reason that NCGRis forming this new organization is be-cause the federal government is chal-lenging their non-profit 501c3, status. To be in compliance with the law, theyare forming a 501c6 organization, whichis non-profit, but a trade organization.OPAwas formed as a trade organization(501c6) at our inception in 2000. At thismoment in time, the major organiza-tions in the larger astrological commu-nity are working together mostharmoniously; thank God.This is goodnews for all of us.The cause of astrologyis furthered when we have harmonyamongst ourselves.I had the great privilege of attending

ChrisMcRae’s post conference work-shop called “Shape Shifters: Great Con-junctions & Powerful Patterns thatShape our Lives Individually and Collec-tively.”My only regret is that it was

much too short … it was so interestingand so important I wish that it couldhave gone on for a week … but then, Iremembered, this is very similar to thegroup work that Chris is leading at thenext OPA retreat. Some of you will belucky enough to be in this group. We advertised that one of the peoplewho registered for the OPA retreat atthe ISAR conference would be able togo for free. It was a lottery.Well, asJupiter would have it, front of three wit-

nesses,DvoraWeilwon the drawing. Icalled her immediatelyto inform her … Shewas overjoyed withwinning, but offeredher free pass to theconference as a scholar-ship, perhaps for a for-eign astrologer toattend.Truly, OPA hasthe most generous,

most community-minded astrologers inthe world.Thank you, Dvora, someonewill be very grateful for this. Our new board members,Katrina Pe-

Serving ourorganization is a wonderful way to servethe needs of the astrology community;OPA is always looking to help make ourastrological work better and more mean-ingful to society is a tangible way; goodastrology improves the quality of life onthe planet. Give me a call or drop me anote if you will like to share the joy andparticipate a little more with the func-tioning of the organization.Just a month before the ISAR Confer-ence I received an email from JenniferBobbitt. She had been given threeweeks to live. She remembered that shehad already paid for the ISAR confer-ence and was asking me (literally fromher death bed) to see that some memberof OPA could use her registration to at-tend this conference. What a spirit ofcommunity; we honor her kindness andthoughtfulness.May we all be so filledwith thoughts of others; she was truly arole model for all of us.

Ever since the Organization for Professional Astrology (OPA)formed (as Prosig) back in 1989, our annual meeting has beenthe center piece of our work to help astrologers do betterastrology and to generally improve the field.

At first we held conferences which lasted one, two, and threedays; exclusively designed to present anything and everythingthat could improve the life of the professional astrologer. Wetalked about professional standards, ethics, setting fees, themethods and manners of forecasting, accounting practices, andmany other professional issues. We also observed each other inthe process of reading charts; we talked about sessions thatdidn’t go as planned. In a word, we got involved in each other’sprofessional lives. We perfected many professional skills be-tween 1989 and 2001 through our newsletters and confer-ences. In 2002 we took all of the material from our earlierconferences and condensed them into a peer review processand formulated a three day weekend experience we called theastrologer’s retreat. It was wildly successful. But, we were notsatisfied with our success; we wanted to improve on it. And wedid, and continue to do so.

The retreat has two main components; the large group ex-perience and the small group experience. The large group ex-perience happens with all of us gathering together for a timeduring the day (usually morning) when we all listen to the samespeakers or participate in the same forum or workshop. Thesmall group experience happens with participants working a setprotocol in a pre-assigned group with a trained leader guidingthe direction of the work. This work was detailed out in an arti-cle in The Mountain Astrologer called “Astrology’s Next Step”(The Mountain Astrologer - issue #133 June/July 2007)

Group leaders meet once a month throughout the year andkeep working on the retreat experience. The retreat has beenexpanded to four days with the first day being an educationalexperience aimed at improving our practice, regardless of whatsystem of astrology is being used. This innovation was greetedand embraced with enthusiasm and has been an added refine-ment to the program.

We added specialty tracks where participating individualswould be able to choose to work with one teacher who wasworking through a particular system: Vedic, Uranian, Psycholog-ical, etc. This addition was so successful that we decided to usethis model for all our groups. Consequently, everyone choosestheir group to be in at the time of registering. You can be in a

beginner’s group if you know little or even no astrology; you canchoose a forecasting group if you have been at it for a longtime; you can choose to work with a group to improve yourbusiness skills; or you can choose to learn a different system. The group leaders are vastly different but all very skilled intheir own right.

You might ask, what makes a retreat different from a regular as-trology conference? Unlike regular astrology conferences, re-treats offer an opportunity to: develop genuine intimacy, study some aspect of the field deeply, and to give you spaceand time for personal exploration. Retreats are an emotionalas well as an intellectual experience.

Intimacy is real at the retreat; a subjective emotional bond canbe formed with each member of your group at the retreat; lifelong friendships can develop, the beginnings of a personal andprofessional support group can be the natural extension fromthe time spent with your peers. Bonding is deep, personal, and lasting.

Instead of attending ten lectures of an hour each you get thechance to work with one teacher for fifteen hours. You canreally absorb and practice a technique or method and ask ques-tions of the person you have chosen to study with. The connec-tion with your peers, who are also studying with your leader, gives a lively dynamic potency to the work in your group whichleaves you with knowledge that you can directly apply to yourcareer when you leave the retreat. You will know your subject indepth by the end of the retreat.

Whereas most conferences that people attend are focused ex-ternally, retreats are actually focused on you, the subject, more than the subject matter. As a consequence, you are led bythe logic of experience to embark on a deep, personal explo-ration. At the end of the retreat you will know somethingmore about yourself, your strengths, your limitations, etc.than you did before coming to this event. This unique integra-tion of the subjective and objective components of experience iswhat makes the retreat a truly wonderful and empoweringevent in the lives of every participant.

We in OPA believe that we have designed an experience, for as-trologers, which has the ability to transform the field of astrol-ogy, one astrologer at a time. Join us at the next retreat for thetime of your life. The Astrologer’s Retreats unite the headand the heart for each participant.
