Mumbai, there he was adviced to go to the Radiotherapy

Department in PGI which has all the facilities as

Dr. Rajinder Sharma had made a candid observation that being

dominated by buearucracy, doctors cannot become good

administrators. However, he clarified that there are some

exceptions, and our President Dr. Rita Kalra is one such doctor

who is a capable administrator.

In her impressive presentation Dr. Manjushree Sharma stated,

“India is no longer a poor country. We have entered the elite of

the western world.” But this has also brought to us some lifestyle

diseases which are fatal.

61% of deaths in India are because of Non-communicable

diseases (NCD). 23% of population in India is at risk of pre-

mature death from NCD. Cancer, Diabetes and Heart disease

account for 55% of premature mortality in age group 30-69 years.

PP R.K. Luther presents a memento to Dr. Manjushree

Sharma. Looking on are Dr. Anurag Sharma, President

Dr. Rita Kalra and Secretary Rtn. Jeeten Bhambri

Cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease, stroke, and hypertension) contribute to 45% of NCD deaths. She

highlighted the various aspects of lifestyle diseases like stress, hypertension, obesity and metabolic syndrome. She said

Indians are amongst the laziest in the world! A 46 country study at Stanford has shown that we are ranked at 39, with

people averaging just 4,297 steps a day. Rampant westernization of our diet, refined food epidemic, food adulteration

and pollution also contributes to NCD. Another glaring fact pointed out by Dr. Manjushree is Psycho-social stress.

Young people are depressed, alone, and ignored. Those who are working are overworked and stressed. Old people are

depressed, being alone and ignored.

Stress leads to moderate risk of developing cardiovascular disease, even if you don‟t smoke and do not consume

alcohol. Dr. Manjushree adviced to get the risk factors evaluated, find out your risk category and plan your lifestyle accordingly. She concluded with remarks, “Wishing you good health, and wisdom to put that to good use.”
