  • For our April meeting, the Colfax Area Historical Soci-ety hosted George Lay for his presentation on the Esoteric Fraternity of Applegate. George has ex-tensive knowledge about the Fraternity, including

artifacts, pictures and books, which he shared with us. The last remaining resident of the Fraternity is a personal ac-quaintance of George's. Thirty-five CAHS members and friends enjoyed George's talk. George would organize a field

trip to the Fraternity hous-ing, publishing offices and property if there is any inter-est. Please let your officers

    know if you are interested.

The winter and raining sea-son is over and work has resumed on the caboose. The track side of the ca-boose now enjoys a new siding. Work will continue on the new siding and will include final nailing, some trim work and additional work around the cupola. The project manager is ex-perimenting with a differ-ent schedule of volunteer work in an effort to try to accelerate the production

    schedule.

    A fund raising effort this

winter raised over $1,000. and work on the project will continue through the summer. Until the street side of the ca-boose has been removed and work required to repair the structure is fully assessed a final cost estimate can not be accurately predicted. Assum-ing the work required on the street side is similar to the track side the project remains $4,000. short of completion

    costs.

Volunteers with some wood working experience are still needed as well as contribu-

    tions.

Thanks to all the team mem-bers that helped out this week. Because of you all we finished installing the new siding the track side of the caboose as well as the south end. The north end is ready for siding with a few boards already installed. I am really tired but the new scheduling is getting the job

    done.

    Thanks for your support

    To Whom It May Concern,

I am married to James L. Gould, Jr

    - my name is Gail Gould and when

I read your request for information

about the Golden Arrow Ranch in

Gold Run, I shared it with my hus-

band, and he thought it was so

    interesting.

    Jim's great grandfather was James

    L. Gould, and lived in Dutch Flat

for many years and was a partner

and then owner of the Gold Run

    Ditch and Mining Company. He

    married Grace Annabelle Halsey

who had come from New York.

She had 3 sisters, and one sister

    married Matthew Towle, the other

    sister escapes my husband mem-

    ory.

Fanny Halsey was a daughter of

one of the sister's, (other than

Grace Halsey), and she married a

man by the name of Matt Pallataeo,

who was an architect in San Fran-

cisco and moved to Gold Run and

built what he considered an earth-

    quake-proof house. He went

    through the earthquake of 1906

and swore, never again. The whole

house was made out of concrete.

Jim said, it was called the Golden

Arrow Ranch, which Matt built, in

Gold Run, Ca. and says it is still

    standing.

Fanny Halsey is buried in Dutch Flat

    Cemetery. (I've been there and

have seen her grave.) Matt Pal-

lataeo wanted to have his ashes

scattered at sea, but his Sister in-

    tervened and had him "embalmed"

    and buried in Pacific Grove.

Just thought this little bit of infor-

mation would be helpful. I was just

    reading a document from the

    Placer County Archives and Re-

search Center, which was an oral

    history interview with my husband

    and Carmel Barry -Schweyer -

    Spring 2007, and noticed the

    name Golden Arrow Ranch, that

belonged to one of Jim's relatives

and when I typed it in, up came

    your Need Information request.

    Small world.

    Sincerely,

    Gail Gould
