These were Captain Thom Burns firstwords as he picked up the phone on

that cold afternoon in February I hadcalled in to Northern Breezes SailingSchool to inquire about American SailingAssociation (ASA) instructor clinics andthe staff patched me through to Thom Ihad expected to be brushed aside and dis-missed under the mistaken assumptionthat only the few and extremely salty everget to be instructors but I called anywayWe were suffering through the worstMinnesota winter in seven years andthoughts of sailing were keeping me fromdepression and insanity I had read all ofthe current issues of the sailing maga-zines (twice) as well as all of the librarybooks on boating that looked interestingand a few that didnt The Internet stillhad plenty of information left and oneday while surfing the idea of teachingsailing suddenly looked brilliant and irre-sistible So I picked up the phone

Allow me to introduce myself Myname is Tony and I am a recovering stockanalyst and confirmed boataholic Idropped out of the rat race two years agoto stay home with my two daughters anddecide what to do next Im still figuringout what to be when I grow up but get-ting paid to be on the water is currently atthe top of my list As I share my new aspi-rations with friends family and strangersthe usual response is an enthusiastic (andenvious) that is so awesomeSometimes I get a more reserved thatsinteresting complete with cynical eyeroll and get-a-real-job body language Ifmy wife is with me she may get a sym-pathetic look that says you poor thingWell I had a real job for 19 years and anearly mid-life crisis was driving me intosomething completely different Whereelse could I match my passion for sailingand know-it-all tendencies with incomepotential Ive owned boats done thebareboat drill in the Apostle Islands andteaching looked like a great way to gowhile waiting for Larry Ellison to returnmy calls about joining the BMW-Oracle

Thom Burns was encouraging and evenseemed somewhat excited after I told hima little about myself Hey I wasnt beingdismissed I soon learned why NorthernBreezes loses about 20 of its BasicKeelboat instructors each year due torelocations family boat and other com-mitments New instructors must be addedannually just to stay even and the schoolis in a growth phase making staffingneeds even greater 2008 has seen a trick-le of power boaters crossing over intosailing as they choke on high gas pricesand that trend is likely to continue Thomfurther explained that instructors for entrylevel courses are especially important asthey create the first impression of the sail-ing school and a satisfied student typical-ly returns for more advanced classessuch as Basic Coastal Cruising BareboatCharter and Advanced Coastal CruisingThese lead to repeat customers that areattracted to the schools vacation coursesin Bayfield Wisconsin and the BritishVirgin Islands often accompanied byfriends and family who get hooked and

the cycle continues In fact I first metThom at one of these advanced classesCoastal Navigation (ASA-105) a 20-hour classroom course taught in a localchurch basement Usually held in thespring and fall it is a nice off-season rev-enue stream for the school and keeps stu-dents interested and involved in the sportwhen they cant get on the water

Prospective sailing instructors beginat the ASA website (httpwwwamerican-sailingcombecome_an_instructorhtml) where anationwide list of instructor clinics ismaintained Application is made directlywith ASA which reviews the candidatessailing resume and then notifies theappropriate local sailing school if theapplicant is accepted An enrollment fee($250 for Basic Keelboat) is paid to ASACourse materials are mailed out includ-ing two pre-tests which must be com-pleted prior to the first day of the clinicIn Minnesota only Northern Breezes islisted and the school has two ASA certi-fied Instructor Evaluators on staff ThomBurns and his brother Captain SteveBurns Basic Smallboat and Basic

Keelboat instructor clinics are held onLake Minnetonka normally in May andJune while advanced instructor clinicsare taught on Lake Superior and in theCaribbean

Prerequisites for an ASA BasicKeelboat instructor include being anASA member in good standing age 18 orolder at least 3 years sailing experienceteaching experience or can demonstratean aptitude for clearly communicatingsailing concepts to the novice sailor andcapable of performing the standardsdescribed in the ASA International LogBook But dont I need a Captains licenseto teach Well no as it turns out for whatI would be doing initially According tothe ASA website you need a US CoastGuard Captains license if you answerYes to all of the following questions1 Is the instructor or boat owner receiv-

ing any compensation or considera-tion

2 Is the boat equipped with auxiliarypower

3 Is the boat operating on waters underthe jurisdiction of the US CoastGuard

Based on these requirements Iwould be allowed to teach on localwaters such as Lake Minnetonka WhiteBear Lake and Medicine Lake but wouldnot be permitted to instruct for pay on theGreat Lakes or oceans which are underCoast Guard authority

The Basic Keelboat instructor clinicwas a three-day affair at ShorewoodYacht Club in Excelsior Minnesota Thiswell appointed marina is also home toNorthern Breezes Boat Club whereschool graduates can sail the same boatson which they learn Most of the nineinstructor candidates were from the TwinCities metro area although one camefrom Minot North Dakota The Keelboatclinic ran concurrently with the schoolsBasic Smallboat instructor clinic consist-ing mainly of high school and college stu-dents hoping to become counselors atNorthern Breezes Youth Sailing Campon Medicine Lake Day one of the clinicincluded introductions overview admin-istrative requirements and sailing On-the-water time emphasized singlehanded

maneuvers including solo crew over-board drills from all points of sail Theseskills were of passfail importance asThom explained the real possibility ofhaving to take control of the boat andsafely operate it without assistance Daytwo was spent almost entirely on the lakein gusty winds and waves on LakeMinnetonka We quickly got comfortablesailing with each other and any competi-tiveness was left ashore We were literal-ly all in the same boat and it was apparentthat our success did not depend on some-one elses failure It was fun and motivat-ing to witness the cheers and high fiveswhen we successfully rescued Timmyour boat cushion mascot who keptfalling overboard By the end of thesecond day we rarely missed our victimon the first try singlehandedly The finalday of the clinic was rainy and raw so wespent it inside the comfortable clubhouseat Shorewood Yacht Club Each ASAinstructor candidate is required to teach ashort class as well as perform a demon-stration afloat on an assigned topicFortunately my classroom topic wassomething I knew well Rules of theRoad although I ran over the allottedteaching time My afloat topic was dock-ing under power which also proved to bemanageable After presentations were

complete we took the written test AllASA courses include a formal examina-tion and the Basic Keelboat Instructor testwas quite challenging Even though wewere only qualifying to teach introducto-ry classes a surprisingly high level ofknowledge was required After the examswere graded Thom did a brief wrap upfollowed by written course evaluationsand individual exit interviews In thesefinal conferences with Thom weexchanged feedback about the clinic andreviewed our personal goals and plans tobecome actual instructors

In my early conversations withThom he described his hiring processThe ASA instructor clinic is all that istechnically required to certify studentsand sign ASA log books ASA doesrequire that you teach through an affiliat-ed ASA facility There are only two ASAaffiliated schools in Minnesota andNorthern Breezes is by far the larger andbetter known Since I wasnt interested instarting my own school Thom and I dis-cussed my working for him To become aNorthern Breezes instructor Thomencourages prospects to pursue advancedteaching credentials such as BasicCoastal Cruising Bareboat Charter andCoastal Navigation This is an opportuni-ty for Thom (or his brother Steve) to fur-

ther ensure there is a good fit between anew instructor and the teaching philoso-phy of Northern Breezes Coaching ofreal students can be observed and person-ality traits are easily seen under the morechallenging conditions of a liveaboardcourse It sure sounded like a four-dayinterview to me but it was sailing timeand included advanced instructor creden-tials (which meant higher pay) so Iquickly agreed

Three weeks after completing theBasic Keelboat instructor clinic I was onmy way to Bayfield with Michael a fel-low graduate We were registered to takethe Basic Coastal CruisingBareboatCharter vacation course as instructorcandidates This four-day fast-pacedcourse allows students to complete twoASA standards in one trip to LakeSuperior As instructor candidatesMichael and I would be in a real teachingenvironment with genuine students inour case Vladan Pulec and KaterinaPulcova a husband and wife team fromthe Twin Cities We lived and sailedtogether for the next four days dockingtacking jibing reefing heaving toanchoring navigating eating and sleep-ing Michael and I acted as crew for thestudents as well as demonstrating ourteaching and sailing skills with ThomBurns observing and running the occa-sional casualty drill on us There are noseparate instructor tests for these cours-es although ASA requires a minimumscore of 90 on the student exams inorder to be rated as an instructor It wasan exhausting weekend but very satisfy-ing as we completed two more ASAinstructor requirements acquired moresignatures in our logbooks and qualifiedfor a pay raise

I was nervous before my first stu-dents arrived at Shorewood Yacht Clubbut knew that I couldnt show itAmazingly my anxiety wore off themoment I met them and we started talk-ing They were brand new to sailing andI realized that no matter what I knewmore than they did and would at leastteach them something I spent most ofthat first class with a smile on my facethinking I cant believe Im getting paid

to do this Some students were easier toteach than others but as the summer andfall wore on it was always fun The mostchallenging situations occurred when stu-dents in the same class had significantdifferences in abilities or when one ofthem had clearly been dragged aboard bya spouse or parent The unmotivated stu-dents were rare however and the lowpoints were more than offset by thosegolden moments of watching someoneget hooked on sailing Seeing students gofrom timidly stepping aboard the first dayto flying across the lake and safely return-ing to the slip unassisted on the last day isextremely gratifying There are fewthings as rewarding as helping someonelearn a new skill and watching them havefun with it

So would I do it all over again Aswe say here in Minnesota you betchaSure I left a trail of cash along the wayThe total cost for Basic KeelboatInstructor certification was under $300while the Basic Coastal CruisingBareboat Charter and Coastal NavigationInstructor upgrade cost close to $1000The advancedcredentials bringa higher wage forclasses taught atall levels and Iestimate that thepayback time formy graduateprogram will onlybe a couple ofyears Im notlikely do get richdoing this butthat was never thegoal Aside fromthe money I lovethe intangiblebenefits such asincreased sailingskills and the con-fidence that Iveachieved duringthe certificationprocess I havebeen pleasantlysurprised by thestatus of my new

position and enjoy it more than I care toadmit And I got an awesome farmerstan What really surprised me was howachievable this was I was a bit conflictedin writing this article worried that morereaders will realize how its done and pur-sue teaching creating a surplus ofinstructors Part of me wanted to makethe process sound agonizingly difficultand selective but it just wouldnt be trueTeaching sailing is a blast and is a realis-tic option open to any avid sailor withmoderate knowledge and skills Its thebest part-time job Ive ever had Whatsnext Obtaining my Coast GuardCaptains license and teaching forNorthern Breezes on Lake Superior andin the Virgin Islands Getting paid to sailin the Caribbean Are you kidding meWhere do I sign up

Over the years a glut of chartsguides and reference manuals

have been crammed into Chip Ahoysbookshelves Whilst sorting through thehodge-podge to eliminate the space-wasters from the useful material itbecomes clear that you truly cant judgea book by its cover

Some guidebooks that we weretold that we couldnt live without werea waste of money The QuimbysCruising Guide comes to mind Thelined but otherwise blank spaces oneach page in it for Captains Notesstrikes me as a ruse for filling pageswhich are basically built around adver-tisements many of which may or maynot be of use to boaters This $40 guidecannot stand alone much of the infor-mation is skimpy incomplete or redun-dant

The value of a guide cannot bejudged by price alone Some of thecheapest texts have turned out to be ourgreatest treasures Skipper Bob fallssquarely in this category The cruisingsages modestly produced notebook-style volumes with such mundane titlesas Anchorages along the IntracoastalWaterway and Cruising the New YorkCanal System are enormously helpfulas both a beforehand primer and whileunderway

I confess that in the heat of themoment I have referred to him asSkipper Boob I have also heartilycursed author Rick Rhodes (CruisingGuide from Lake Michigan toKentucky Lake) whose recommendedanchorages on the Illinois River result-ed in Chip Ahoy running hard agroundonce in horrendous weather conditions

and bumping twice while attemptingother similarly nebulous spots for sug-gested anchoring Sorry gentlemenNobodys perfect Maybe there WASelectricity or a pumpout or no chargethe last time you stopped at that partic-ular free dock which is no longer freePossibly the authors idea of a goodplace to stop for the night is differentthan mine In all cases when using aguidebook the boater must keep inmind the boating style of the author(ie is he a devoted stink-potter or ablow boater with shallow draft) theexperience of the author (anyone canself-publish a guidebook after all) andthe incontrovertible fact that both man-made and natural conditions on lakes

rivers and oceans are in a constant stateof flux If as in Rhodes case theguidebook author is traveling in a smallpower boat his observations may nothave relevance to larger craft especial-ly full-keel sailboats

Liability-waiving disclaimersaside guidebook authors should besaluted for their courage They dissem-inate crucial information that fellowboaters of wildly varying skill levelsare relying on Its a heavy responsibil-ity No matter how authoritative anyguidebook appears to be we mustalways remind ourselves that we travelat our own risk reliant on our own witscurrent local knowledge and dead reck-oning skills There isnt a guidebook in

the world that will take you safely fromPoint A to Point B if you dont do yourown homework That is why you willfind me in the cockpit or salon at theend of each travel day reading up onChip Ahoys next potential destinationlisting possible anchorages fuel stopsand emergency duck-ins within our tar-get mileage zone on an index card Imark pertinent pages in various guideswith clothespins or paper clips Whileunderway in windy conditions theclothespins are handy anchors to keepus on the proper page In wet weatherlarge plastic Ziploc bags work well toprotect the guides while still affordingvisibility When venturing intounknown territory I make sure thatevery guidebook chart and referencemanual that may possibly be of use isplaced within arms reach well inadvance of departure Being ready to gomeans knowing WHERE you aregoing There have been many timeswhen Chip Ahoy shoved off earlier thanexpected due to a change in lock sched-ules bridge construction closingsunanticipated rising water miscalculat-ed falling tides or other waterway situ-ations that require immediate action Imay get caught with half-cooked baconon the stove or teeth half-brushed but Iwill never again be placed in the posi-

tion of not being sure which channel orwhich marker delineates our properpath A wrong turn into two feet ofwater at the head of the MississippiRiver entry cured me of that devil-may-care attitude Captain Scott and a buddyboat had decidedon a spontaneousexit from arestaurant dockbefore I had evenopened the chart-book Quickerthan the Captaincould ask whichchannel ChipAhoy was firmlystuck in themuck

Claiborne S Young is anothermainstay among venerable cruisingguide writers His Gulf and Floridacruising guides abound in nauticalbookstores These weighty tomes con-tain a lot of historical information andrestaurant recommendations that neverfail to make me hungry even if therestaurant no longer exists or hasundergone a change in managementWe found ourselves using Youngsmaterial as more of an adjunct than aprimary guide simply because there isa lot of extraneous info to sift throughto get to the meat of practical mattersThe sketches of anchoring possibilitiesproved useful as did the break-out sec-tions covering harborbayinletapproaches The best strategy forYoungs guides is to read up beforehandand bookmark cogent passages so youare not frantically riffling through a500-page book at the last minute whilethe Captain is hollering do we turn toport or starboard here or where isthat sunken wreck Constant readerssuch as myself may enjoy boning up onthe history and dining spots once youhave stopped somewhere for theevening or a few days I picked up a lotof trivia with which to regale theCaptain as we passed by various sites -he wasnt always a receptive listenerbut at least it kept me entertained

Our adventures on the water have

been significantly aided by DoziersWaterway Guides Regularly updatedeasy to use and extremely comprehen-sive the guides are well worth theprice if only to track the bridges oneencounters while transiting AmericasGreat Circle Loop The grids listingmarina amenities and contact numbersare also enormously helpfulSometimes a hail on the radio wont doit you need to pick up that cell phoneand call em direct especially if youwant a price quote on fuel or dockagewhich most marinas will not provideover the public airwaves I do admit acertain prejudice against the GreatLakes version because some of thematerial related to going ashore up inmy neck of the Superior woods is out-dated and too general as if the contrib-

utors merely visited here by phonePerhaps I am just subconsciouslypeeved because I was not asked to con-tribute In any event I can heartily rec-ommend investing in the WaterwayGuides and as we add updated versionswe have no reservations about passingalong the older versions They still con-tain great information that is far betterthan nothing for the cruisers who cantafford new guidebooks andor are kid-ding themselves that they can get alongjust fine without them

While many guidebooks may benice not needs charts are absolute-ly vital Do not leave home withoutthem We have encountered more thanone deluded boater for whom ignoranceis not bliss For every delivery captainbragging that he can make it safely andon-time from Tarpon Springs to CorpusChristi navigating by restaurant place-mat there is an intrepid yet woefullyignorant soul flying blind and payingdearly for his delusions We were hailed

on the Tennessee by a solo sailor whowanted to know which way to turncoming around a bend that would havetaken him into swampy kayak territoryhad he continued on his dead-end pathWe later heard him hailing a marina atdark and being informed that approachdepths were three feet He hadshrugged off our offer to raft him up fora look at our charts and some info onwhere he could put in for the night witha four-foot draft He was later strandedin Mobile with a disabled boat and nofunds his dream to sail the waters ofthe world abandoned Another charac-ter taking a homemade pontoon boatdown the Missouri River into theMississippi told us that charts wouldjust spoil his fun He bought the chartsAFTER he had navigated a particularstretch of water as a souvenir All I cansay is wow no wonder his wife andkids refused to travel with him Also inthis clueless category are the monkey-see monkey-do boaters who simplylatch onto the flotilla and blindly followthe leader Heaven help them if theylose the pack and are left to their owndevices

I cannot emphasize enough theneed to check ahead in your charts tomake sure you have what you need forthe next leg of your trip Dismay anddisorientation accompanied two of ourmost memorable errors in this categorywhen we found ourselves without papercharts for entering Biscayne Bay andlater ran out of directions as we head-ed from the Erie Canal into Lake ErieIn the canal case rudimentary comput-er charts were a lifesaver (although Ifeared a heart attack when the comput-er blipped into reboot mode at onepoint and took a few minutes to comeback up) As we approached ourBiscayne entry a nearby luxury yachtresponded to our queries and obliginglyradioed waypoints and specific direc-tions Our first mission upon reachingland was to hunt down the propercharts For affordability and all-inclu-sive information its hard to beat Janand Bill Moellers IntracoastalWaterway Norfolk to Miami A Cockpit

Many of the full heartland rivercharts do not offer a good bang for thebuck but youll want to invest anywaybecause something is better than noth-ing Accustomed to excellentRichardsons charts for Great Lakessailing I remember my dismay when Ifirst flipped through the IllinoisMississippi and Ohio River Corps ofEngineers charts They are very primi-tive and do not show water depthbecause levels are always fluctuatingBuoy positions are not fixed due to thefluctuations and in the case of theMighty Mississip powerful currentsoften pull the markers out of position

maintained yacht club Considering itlikely that we would be turned away westill had to try using the phone numberlisted in the guide In a little under twohours both boats were tied up in a well-sheltered harbor offering non-snobbyhospitality a host of affordable andthoughtful amenities a nearby grocerystore for restocking provisions andample room for Faith Afloat toloadunload changing crews and accom-panying luggage

When youre sailing a boat that has asymmetrical spinnaker the biggest

gains and losses usually occur on the upwindlegs But with asymmetricals its exactly theopposite Gains and losses on the beats arerelatively small-but on the runs they can behuge

There are two main reasons for thisFirst boats with asymmetrical chutes sailmuch higher angles downwind which meansthey are normally split very far apart on runsWith this much separation even the smallestshifts or puffs can make a big difference

The second reason is that asymmetricalboats tend to have a much wider range ofperformance Its not uncommon for one boatto sail a knot or two faster or 10 degreeshigher or lower than another boat This pro-duces large disparities in downwind perform-ance

Because of the potential for big gainsand losses it is important to sail fast andsmart on runs Here are a couple of the mostimportant points

bull Jibe back through puffs -Symmetrical boats sail low angles that allowthem to head in almost the same directionthat a puff is going and therefore stay in apuff longer Because asymmetrical boats sailhigher angles they tend to go across and outof puffs To stay in better pressure longerjibe when you get to the far side of the puffso you can sail back through it

bull Play most shifts as persistent - Onruns asymmetrical boats sail fast with thewind so they dont experience as many shiftsIn fact even if the wind direction is oscillat-ing they might see only one shift during thecourse of a 10-minute run Therefore theyshould play that as a persistent shift

Watch other boats One thing thats funabout asymmetrical boats is you have a widerange of angles and speeds to choose from Butthis can also make it tough to find the down-wind groove Besides your sense of feel thebest guide is your performance relative to otherboats Keep a close eye on whether you aregaining or losing and if necessary adjust theway you are sailing your boat

Pick your passing lane When youresailing in a mixed fleet its not normally agreat idea to pass very close to leeward of aboat with a symmetrical spinnaker Sincethey are probably sailing a lower angle youcould get stuck in their wind shadow Toavoid this look ahead and jibe or pass towindward


Wow look at all that separationBoats with asymmetrical chutes sail higherangles downwind and in light to moderateair often get further apart on the runs thanthey do on beats This means even thesmallest wind shifts or changes in windvelocity can produce huge gains and lossesThats great when you are behind but ifyoure ahead be careful about letting theboats behind sail too far away from you

Keep your air clear Remember that clear air comes to youfrom the direction of your apparent wind Asymmetrical boats sailrelatively high and fast so their apparent wind is usually pretty farforward This makes it easier for the leeward leading boat to keepher air clear in front of the trailing boat It also means that its hard-er for the boat behind to affect a leeward boat with her wind shad-ow (because she has to get so far forward)


Dont jibe too much In many situations boats with symmetricalchutes barely slow at all when they jibe Asymmetrical boats go faster tobegin with and have to make a bigger turn so jibing is more of a disrup-tion and more costly This means you cant jibe for every little tactical orstrategic reason Prioritize your need to jibe (such as doing a jibe set to goleft) and dont jibe without a pretty good reason If you are planning a jibeset be sure to approach and round the windward mark with lots of speed

Evaluate your wind choicesWhen youre sailing downwind you caneither be on starboard tack or port tackIn both cases the wind you get (ie the

puffs lulls and shifts) will come fromthe direction of your apparent wind

So when you are consideringwhich way to go look in the

two directions shownsince that is where

your wind willcome from on

each tack

Sail for the puffs Even small changes in wind pressure can make big dif-ferences in downwind performance especially for asymmetrical boats and espe-cially in light-to-moderate air Therefore keep a good lookout to windward Onsome days the puffs are obvious but many times the difference between puffsand lulls is a very subtle shade of color or texture on the water Its hard to lookfor this in the middle of a race but it may be the most important thing

Watch out for laylinesAsymmetrical boats are very sensitive tochanges in the wind and their sailingangle varies widely in puffs and shiftsTherefore its not a great idea to reachthe layline too far from the leewardmark All you need is a little header or aslight increase in pressure and you couldbe overstanding the mark by a lot Thatwould be especially costly in breeze

By the time the new owner of a nine-year old $35000 24-foot fishing

boat approached the BoatUS ConsumerAffairs Department for help it was toolate Shortly after purchasing the vesselthe new owner discovered that the boathad been subjected to excessive trau-ma from a hurricane that caused seriousstructural damage Unfortunately thenew owner was now left with only one

expensive option litigationWhile buying a used boat is never

In most cases visual distress signalswill attract attention to a boater in need

but not always In those rare cases wherethey fail to catch the eye it may have lit-tle to do with the eye but rather much todo with the type of distress signal devicethe eye can detect Types can be as differ-ent as night and daymdashliterally

And so it was literally the caseregarding a recent lifesaving rescue OnJuly 22 2008 a 22-foot powerboat rolledover leaving five fishermen clinging tothe hull The capsizing happened around10 am on Lake Michigan about threemiles off Holland Michigan

In an urgent effort to draw attentionthe stranded boaters set off several flaresthey managed to extract from the over-turned boat The hand-held red flareswent unnoticed Determined to attractattention they attached a distress flag to afishing pole and waved it overheadNearly two hours after the capsizing theorange 3ft x 3ft flag displaying a blacksquare and ball symbol caught the eye ofa couple onboard a nearby sailboat

ldquoWhen my husband and I first spot-ted the flag we first thought it might be aflag used to mark fishing netsrdquo said Tina

Kelsey ldquoBut then my husband Billnoticed the flag moved out of sync withthe wave motionrdquo

Tina aimed in on the flag with binoc-ulars and recognized the orange flag witha black square and ball as a day-timeinternational distress signal knowledgeshe had acquired in a United States PowerSquadron boating safety course Sheimmediately called the Coast Guard onVHF-FM Channel 16 the InternationalDistress Frequency

Coast Guardsman AndrewDuhaime Station Holland picked up thecall ldquoThe caller right off provided a posi-tion and that she had two people in sightin the water By the time she made a sec-ond call we were on the rescue boat rac-ing towards the latitude and longitudeposition she providedrdquo said Duhaime

ldquoI canrsquot believe how quickly they gotto usrdquo said Tina Kelsey When theHolland Coast Guard rescue boat arrivedall five of the survivors were aboard thesailboat They were transferred to theCoast Guard rescue boat and returned toshore

A combination of a visual distresssignal and VHF-FM marine radio drew

the eye and ear that led to a successfulrescue

Ironically Tina Kelsey had a halfhour earlier snapped a pic on her digitalcamera of a 65-foot powerboat poundingnorthward into head seas ldquoMy husbandand I couldnrsquot believe the pounding thatboat was taking enough to find mescrambling below deck for my camerardquosaid Tina Several hours later the largeboat would break up off Little PointSable

The captain of the doomed craft firedoff an urgent Mayday over VHF-FMChannel 16 A nearby boater heard theMayday and raced to the rescue The boatsank in moments leaving a father and histeenage son in desperate straits Yet witha heap of hope both were wearing lifejackets Hopefully their life jackets car-ried distress signals in particular a day-time orange smoke signal in the event theradio distress call went unheard As itturned out both were rescued by a ldquoGoodSamrdquo who picked up the distress callalong with the Coast Guard

A lady on shore captured this dra-matic boat break-up on a camcorder thatcaught one of the crewman leaping offthe stern

What I ask A frigid wall of LakeSuperior smacks me I snort water out ofmy nostrils My rain jacket is now asoaking joke And we havent even start-ed racing

For years I looked at the big lake onWednesday nights in Duluth and saw theweekly regatta put on by the DuluthYacht Club (duluthyachtclubcom) Myfamily and I sat on the deck at BajaBillys so the kids could look at the tran-quil blue filled with white triangles ofsail I imagined the sailors with theirtopsiders and ascots chortling about thestock market while they passed aroundthe chardonnay

I discovered that my friend Lukewas a crew member on one of the racingboats Last September on the last race ofthe season I asked my buddy if I couldtag along He told me to bring everypiece of rain gear and winter gear Iowned

Can I bring Sam I asked think-ing of the placid evening Id have out onthe water with my 6-year old son

Slowly with a smirk Luke saidMaybe you should try it yourself once

I agreed not processing that the 20knot winds out of the northeast werefetching up eight foot swells on the lake

At the skippers meeting in the mari-na at Park Point everybody made surerookies like me had a ride I was invitedonto the Weatherly with Captain TomIm a landlubber but figured Id be okayas long as I didnt spill any caviar Ishouldve expected rougher seas as Iwatched Captain Tom counting headsWe followed the other boats through thecalm waters toward the Aerial LiftBridge Or as I now call it the Portal ofDoom One of the guys said it was goodto have more crewmen than normalsince we could use the rail meat in thestrong wind
