And Orient Chairman of “Arm in Arm”

Each new Scottish Rite Mason needs a friend! What is a

friend, exactly? Well, he’s a brother who might hear a good

word about you, feel happy for you and congratulate you. If

you had something to share, he might ask to hear more

about it. He might even ask to share the news with friends

and family and celebrate with you. Most importantly, he

would walk with you in this new Scottish Rite adventure on

which you’ve embarked. He would walk right beside you,

Arm in Arm!

The Scottish Rite Players are a cast of actors dedicated to helping the

San Antonio Scottish Rite reach its full potential as the “University of Freemasonry” in South Texas. As a home to future Laurence Oliviers,

Jack Nicholsons, Marlon Brandos and Robert DeNiros (and the occasional Brad Pitt and George Clooney), participation in the Players offers a creative outlet for those who tend to watch “Hamlet” or “A

Streetcar Named Desire” or “Raging Bull” or "Oceans 11, 12 (or) 13" or "Tombstone" and say…”Heck, I could do that!” , you can now!

By Dr. James Walker Todd, Chairman

The Scottish Rite Learning Center of South Texas (a Texas Non-Profit Corporation) is a charitable foundation created by the San Antonio Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonry. It was created and dedicated to assisting children with learning disabilities. These are children who, despite normal to above normal intelligence cannot learn to read or write without special training. Dyslexia is a specific type of learning disability that makes it difficult for the person to sound out words and to read fluently so that meaning is easily gained. Dyslexics usually have difficulty with spelling, learning new vocabulary, and getting their thoughts onto paper in a logical, concise manner. They often have good verbal skills, however. No two dyslexics are alike---each has his or her own set of strengths and weaknesses. The Learning Center wants to help these children to become productive and worthwhile citizens.

The Scottish Rite Learning Center of South Texas (SRLC) also offers the Dyslexia Therapist Training Program for individuals with a college degree. This comprehensive training to become a specialist in multi-sensory teaching techniques of the structure of the English language is purposefully designed for the student who is at risk for reading difficulty or who has been diagnosed as dyslexic. This training will be implemented in the establishment of local remedial classes for these unique students.

The therapist training program provides the opportunity for an individual to become a specialist in the field of dyslexia and related learning differences. In order to provide the highest-quality training possible, there is a limited number of individuals selected for the training each year. Course content and techniques are based on the original Orton-Gillingham model, as well as others, with additions and refinements developed since 1965 at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for children in Dallas.

Completion of this two-year comprehensive training program prepares an individual to receive a certificate of completion from Scottish Rite Learning Center with the title of Dyslexia Therapist. Upon successful completion of a comprehensive examination by the Academic Language Therapy Association, ALTA, our graduates will also receive the title of Certified Academic Language Therapist.

The Learning Center is funded entirely by contributions from Masons and non-Masons alike. It is a 100% tax exempt foundation and donations to it are 100% tax deductible. The Foundation offers an opportunity for gracious giving. A gift is a precious thing, and through it, the giver can live forever in the hearts of others.

No charges are ever made for teaching the children who are in the Take Flight program. The Learning Center operates with extremely low overhead, with all administrative requirements and costs met by the use of volunteers and through the Scottish Rite Charities.

As contributions are made available to the Learning Center, continued expansion of the new program throughout South Texas will be pursued, and more and more children can be helped. Inquiries and contributions are solicited. Phone (210) 222-0133 in San Antonio or toll-free (866) 222-9293 from anywhere in the United States.

A GREAT PROGRAM TO CREATE A LIVING MEMORIAL

With the preservation of the San Antonio Scottish Rite Library and Museum, Inc., and its magnificent Cathedral at stake, a great program has been developed which, if adequately supported, can assure the future of this magnificent building.

THE SAN ANTONIO SCOTTISH RITE LIBRARY AND MUSEUM, INC.'S CATHEDRAL ENDOWMENT FUND

The Cathedral Endowment Fund is a fully tax exempt means of saving for the future. The Fund is our principal insurance against inflation, maintenance costs and loss of membership, and is the major means by which we can save our beautiful Cathedral and our Library and Museum for our children's children. Interest earned by the Fund is used to improve, maintain, repair and support the Cathedral, to preserve it for the ages.

It is critical to our future that the Fund continues to grow, for as the Cathedral ages, the cost of maintenance and improvement also grows. Non-taxable contributions of any amount are most gratefully received. Membership in the Million Dollar Club can be obtained for $1,000.00, either in cash, pledge or bequest through a will or insurance policy. Each leaf on the "Tree of Life" in the Hall of Honor attests to the generosity of members and their families.

A beautiful lapel pin and certificate, along with entry on "The Tree of Life", is awarded to Million Dollar Club members.

Scottish Rite Charities and a DeMolay Chapter

During the days when it was beset with is own financial troubles, the Bodies still

made their contribution to Scottish Rite causes. One of the large donations was

made to the Scottish Rite Educational Association for a girls' dormitory at the

University of Texas. To this the Bodies of San Antonio pledged fifty percent of their

gross receipts from the fees for the degrees for the years 1920, 1921 and 1922,

and one-third of its receipts for 1923 and 1924. In all, these contributions to the

dormitory totaled $186,431.67. Within the past two years, the Bodies have made a

further contribution of $42,000 to the Scottish Rite Dormitory to be used in the air-conditioning

of the building.

Six Thousand Dollars ($6000) was contributed toward the

furnishing and equipment of the Scottish Rite Room at the

Grand Lodge Memorial Temple, in Waco, Texas. Then, individual

members of the Bodies have made their contributions to the

Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children and the Scottish Rite

Foundation. Several legacies of substantial size have been left

by deceased Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of San Antonio

to the Hospital for Crippled Children.

In 1925, Eph M. Goldstein, 32°, a member of the Bodies, saw

the urgent need for a Special Committee to raise funds and

provide relief for those of our members, their widows and children who were in need of

emergency assistance. He was instrumental in organizing the Scottish Rite Relief Committee

which has continued to function since its beginning. For some years past, Louis Driggers, 33°,

has been the Chairman of this Committee. The Committee is composed of seven elected

members. To receive aid from this Committee, a member must be in good standing in these

Bodies or have been in good standing at the time of his death for his dependents to receive

assistance. The funds of this Committee are obtained solely through voluntary contributions,

wills and bequests from our members in the Valley of San Antonio. An annual appeal is made to

our members to replenish these funds. No salaries are paid from these funds; every cent,

except for necessary postage and mailing costs, goes directly to aid our needy brethren and

their dependents. Many cases could be cited which have been assisted by this Committee since

its beginning and its effective work continues.

The Almoner's Fund is administered by Forrest Wilder Morris, 33°, as the Almoner. During every

Reunion of the Scottish Rite Bodies the opportunity is given members to participate in

replenishing the Almoner's Fund. This fund is disbursed under the direction of the Almoner

without regard to race, color or creed. It may be spent to buy fuel for the widow, a pair of

shoes for the barefoot child, food for the hungry, or the relief of other distress.

For a long number of years, the temple of the Bodies was given the benefit of an exemption

from ad valorem taxes. However, the Texas courts in more recent years have held that

property used only by Masonic Bodies is not exempt from taxation, since lodge work was only

partly charitable, and activities included other fields than charity, and to that extent the

property was not used exclusively by an institution of purely public charity. Consequently, the

Scottish Rite Temple in San Antonio is now, and has for some years past, been on the tax rolls.

The annual taxes paid upon the property to the State, County, City and School amount to

approximately $7,000, and which on a monthly basis would average about $600 per month.

In 1921, the San Antonio Council Knights of Kadosh organized a chapter of

the Order of DeMolay, and named it in honor of the Past Sovereign Grand

Commander of the Rite - General Albert Pike 33°. Letters Temporary were

issued to San Antonio Council Knights of Kadosh, Ancient and Accepted

Scottish Rite, on May 9, 1921, and on June 30, 1921, Albert Pike Chapter No.

58 was instituted with a class of 101 young men.
