Volume of Boxlike Shapes: V = lwh
Example
• Find the volume
6m
4m
2m
Example
• You are about to begin work on a swimming pool in your yard. The first step is to have a hole dug that is 90 ft long, 60 ft wide and 6 ft deep. You will use a truck that can carry 10 cubic yards of dirt and charges $12 per load. How much will it cost you to have all the dirt hauled away?
Volume of a Pyramid: V = (1/3)Bh where B is the area of the base
Example
• Find the volume of a pyramid that is 4 ft tall with a 6ft by 6ft square base.
Example
• The Transamerica Tower in San Francisco is a pyramid with a square base. The pyramid is 256 m tall. The base is 52m by 52m. Find the volume of the building.
Volume of a Right Circular Cylinder: V = r2h
Example
• Find the volume of a cylinder with a diameter of 8 inches and height 6 inches.
Example Finding the Volume of a Cylinder
To find the volume of a cylinder with a diameter of 20 yards and a height of 9 yards, we need to first find its radius. Because the diameter is 20 yards, the radius is half this length, or 10 yards.
V = r2h = (10yd)2(9yd) = 900yd3
= 2827yd3
Volume of a Cone: V = (1/3)()r2h
Example
• Find the volume of a cone with radius 4m and height 6 inches.
Example
• An ice cream cone is 5 inches deep and has a radius of 1 inch. A spherical scoop of ice cream with radius 1 inch is placed in the cone. If it melts into the cone will it overflow?
5in
1in
Volume of a Sphere:V = (4/3)()r3
Example
• A basketball has radius 4.5in. If the ball is filled with 350 cubic inches of air will it be full?
