Volume MMXV Number 4 April 2015 Lent is traditionally a time when we pray, fast, and serve others as a way to prepare to celebrate Easter. Lent is 40 weekdays plus six Sundays and reminds us of the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness. During the other Wednesdays in Lent we will gather for a simple meal at 6:15 and Holden Evening Prayer at 7 pm. The schedule is as follows: 4/1 6:15 pm Dinner 7 pm Holden Evening Prayer (Epiphany) 4/2 7 pm Maundy Thursday and First Communion (Epiphany) 4/3 7 pm Tennebrae (Parkway) So every year, I consider the question….”what will I give up for Lent?” Some years, it’s the traditional favorite food or glass of wine, some years it may be shopping (but that usually doesn’t make the cut. Some years, I don’t do anything. I was at the hospital heading to a meeting, and that’s when I decided what my Lenten choice of sacrifice would be this year…elevators. I wish I could stand here and say that I had a totally righteous, unselfish, reason for this choice, but it’s not good to lie in church. I decided that this would be challenging, I would get my exercise while giving something up, practicing my “Lenten Journey”. Very efficient, covering several bases type of decision. I am pretty sure that’s not what Jesus had in mind, but nevertheless, that’s what I was going to do. So for the past several weeks I have been taking the stairs. So what I learned right off the bat… 1. The hospital is even bigger when you take the stairs. 2. I am not in as good of shape as I thought I was. 3. I don’t have the right stairclimbing shoes. As I took time to really think about this experience so far, these thoughts have come to mind…We are in our wilderness now, everyday….so why do we really even do this? Who made this Lent thing up anyway??? So the wilderness… Aren’t there days when you feel needy, alone, hungry? Aren’t there times when the devil is tempting you at every turn? Haven’t you done things that were reckless, risky, not really thought that through, or thought “what could happen”? Are there times when you are worshipping other gods? So, if I am already in the wilderness, why climb 8 flights of stairs in shoes that were not made for climbing stairs? What’s the point? I am glad you asked. Here’s why I needed to climb those stairs… This practice has caused me to be more mindful and present in my choices. Too many days we walk through our day not really present and with too little purpose. When you have to think about doing what you do every day differently, you notice your environment, you see things and experience things you may have been missing before. It has slowed me down. I have to take my time, pace myself to get up those stairs. I have time by myself in the process, and I have talked to God, focused on Him to get up that last couple of flights. And it’s not just going up the stairs but going down. Much easier, but I also have that time that I did not have before. I have met people in the stairwell and I have seen people that I may not have seen otherwise. Finally, it has allowed me the opportunity to share my faith. Those that I work with know I have given up elevators for Lent, and have taken the stairs with me at times. Some who didn’t really know what Lent was have asked questions. Others have assisted me with remaining faithful to the practice. I almost took the elevator to leave one afternoon, and one of my colleagues stopped me and said, “Don’t cheat Jesus”! So that’s my story thus far this Lenten season. I hope your practice has brought you to a place of awareness, mindfulness of the present, changed your view of the world, more appreciative of blessings, and opportunities to share the grace and love of Jesus with others. I say bring on Easter! Amen. Sandy Hunter

Lent is traditionally a time when we pray, fast, and serve others as a way to prepare to celebrate Easter. Lent is 40 weekdays plus six Sundays and reminds us of the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness. During the other Wednesdays in Lent we will

gather for a simple meal at 6:15 and Holden Evening Prayer at 7 pm. The schedule is as follows:

4/2 7 pm Maundy Thursday and First Communion (Epiphany)

4/3 7 pm Tennebrae (Parkway)

So every year, I consider the question….”what will I give up for Lent?” Some years, it’s the traditional favorite food or glass of wine, some years it may be shopping (but that usually doesn’t make the cut. Some years, I don’t do anything. I was at the hospital heading to a meeting, and that’s when I decided what my Lenten

choice of sacrifice would be this year…elevators. So what I learned right off the bat…

Are there times when you are worshipping other gods? So, if I am already in the wilderness, why climb 8 flights of stairs in shoes that were not made for climbing stairs? What’s the point? I am glad you asked. Here’s why I needed to climb those stairs… This practice has caused me to be more mindful and present in my choices. Too many days we walk through our day not really present and with too little purpose. When you have to think about doing what you do every day differently, you notice your environment, you see things and experience things you may have been missing before.

It has slowed me down. I have to take my time, pace myself to get up those stairs. No Foolin’ Around in EECC! (but there’s plenty of fun!)

Have you ever wondered HOW our preschool teachers actually introduce and teach concepts that our preschoolers need to learn? One of

their strategies is to use children’s literature and Bible stories and integrate these stories into the daily instructional routine. For example, teaching colors is the topic of the week in one of the classrooms. The teachers read these books: “Harold’s Purple Crayon,” “The Mixed Up Chameleon,” “I Spy Colors,” and “Noah’s Ark”…opening up the door to discovering colors! In addition, the children wore specific color clothing each day of the week making Monday “yellow day” and Tuesday “green day” (It was St. Patrick’s day!), etc. Students also painted monochromatic pictures each day in the “color of the day!” Their artwork is on display in the EECC hallway! Be sure to take a look at these budding artists! Math is incorporated by sorting plastic bears by color and science is incorporated as the sun and rainbows are discussed. In addition, the EECC parents and Epiphany members are starting to prepare the flower and vegetable beds. THANKS if you helped on the Saturday work day! EECC teachers are always conscious of the environment. Did you know that biodegradable packing peanuts stick together when wet and make GREAT sculptures when stuck together? Try it! SUPPORT EECC in April by donating items for the EECC YARD SALE…and coming on Saturday, April 18th.4..to buy items. Proceeds from the yard sale will go towards the extra programs (Teacher Creature, Kids in Motion, Kids Spanish) that make EECC such a special place for children! Our Epiphany/EECC budget only provides half of the payment for these programs, and the parents group, EECC PALS, pays the remainder of the expense for these programs. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Lisa

Nichols, our EECC Director, or Jackie Pierson, Chair, EECC

Committee.

More News From the Council

The Council discussed the value of having members wear their name tags. Now that we worship in one service, many don’t know each other, especially since we recently greeted eleven new members. It’s the Council’s goal to know each other as family. In order to make sure everyone regardless of time at Epiphany has a name tag, the Sunday following Easter (April 12) a form will be included in the bulletin to order, for a minimal charge, a name tag. If you miss church that Sunday, please contact Mickey in the church office 765-6211 to place an order for a new name tag. Then we can greet each other by name again. Serious consideration and study is being done to determine how we can meet our staffing needs with our current budget. Information was shared regarding the gifts and skills of a potential candidate

We have a Call Committee of seven people identified. They are:

Sandy Hunter Sarah Lischer Mitzi McLean Dan Meckley

David Thrasher Michelle Toborg Kathleen Tucker

The Council selected at least one representative in each of the demographic categories that were identified:

• Members 25+ years

• Member 12-25 years

• Members 1-12 years

• Family with young children

• Family with teens

• Couples with no children/empty nesters

• Single adults

The next steps are to have the Call Committee installed, trained as required by Synod, and prepared meet and get organized so the Call Process can begin.

for Youth Director. Currently the budget is being examined to see if a compensation package can be assembled for the candidate. This person also has some musical talent and may be able to help us in that department, especially since regretfully we had to accept the resignation of Karen Brown as our or-ganist/handbell director. We will also be losing her husband, Jim, a valuable member of our choir. We understand their family situation and wish them well as they leave for Raleigh. April 12th will be their last Sunday. However, we want them to feel forever a part of Lutheran Church of the Epiphany.

Pastor Laura Health Update First, I would like to say thank you to everyone for the prayers, the cards, the offers of food after my recent hospitalization. I completed a four-day round of IV antibiotics March 12-16. Thankfully, by the time you read this I will have finished the 10-day round of oral antibiotics. Since the beginning of the year, I have been having a chronic flare-up of diverticulitis. Some of you may remember that I was hospitalized for

this is 2008. Due to the chronic nature of this current episode and my history, I will meet with a surgeon on April 6th to schedule colon surgery. As soon as I have a date and more details, I will share that information with you. Currently I am on a very restricted diet, so thanks for the many offers of food, and soon I hope to enjoy the wonderful fruits of your labor. I have been surrounded by your prayers and have felt the strength of them. I am thankful to be part of this community of faith. Peace,

Thank you to all who spent a night at the Samaritan Inn Homeless Shelter during “Epiphany Week”! I hope it was a rewarding experience and the Samaritan Inn is always very gracious in their appreciation of our time. The Yadkin River Chapter of Thrivent Financial donated $400 on our behalf to purchase food for the Inn. THANK YOU!!! A HUGE THANK YOU to Ardel Meisinger for coordinating the food purchase with the Inn’s greatest food needs. If you did not have an opportunity to serve this year, we will be back again next year. See you at the Inn! Robert P. Maltzahn

Dear Friends,

Just a note to thank you for the many birthday cards you’ve sent my husband in retirement. He truly enjoyed them.

I am sad to say Pastor Kepley passed away last March about two weeks after his birthday (78). Blessings on your ministry, Susan Kepley

Welcome to the family!

Congratulations to freshman Dallas Wester, son of EECC teacher Meg Wester. Dallas was named varsity rookie of the year in wrestling at Reagan High School.

Please be sure to wear your name tag on Sunday mornings. We have several new members and it is helpful for them and also our visitors to know your name as you welcome them.

Debbie Spurlock was surprised by a birthday cruise with her family in March. Her brother and his wife came all the way from California to surprise her on the ship. Good planning, Spurlock girls!

Congratulations to Rusty Worthington, who retired from TE Connectivity (Tyco, Amp) this month with 34 years of service. Enjoy!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 12th! The Epiphany Ringers will be hosting a reception to honor Karen & Jim Brown as they leave us to move to Raleigh. We have certainly enjoyed their ministry and friendship with us. Help us wish them well by staying after worship on that Sunday.

WELCA SALEM CONFERENCE SPRING GATHERING

Saturday, April 18th at Shiloh Lutheran Church 703 Lewisville Vienna Road, Lewisville, NC

9:30 am - refreshments/fellowship 10:00 am - meeting

Event ends with lunch.

The program is “I Am She.” Our mission statement calls us to act boldly. What does this mean?

It means a variety of things, for boldness has a range of voices. Some are bright and loud. Some are firm and quiet.

Do you know what is your “best Bold”? This program will help you discover it and put it into action.

Registration is $8.00, which includes lunch.

You may pay when you arrive.

Please call Laura Spain, Salem Conference Presider, if you plan to attend. (748-8033)

Deadline for registration is April 10.

Make plans to go enjoy an informative morning and WELCA fellowship!
