Fall 2012
Our Mission
Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation, was established in 1987. Our mission is to provide college scholarships to dependent children and spouses of all
US Navy - officer and enlisted - active duty, retired, honorably discharged or deceased who served within Naval Air Forces. Recipients are selected on the basis
of scholastic merit, community service and extra curricular activities.
Wings Over America annually sponsors over forty scholarships to students who have chosen to con-
tinue their education. The foundation is funded solely through the generous contributions of private and corporate sources, and has proudly awarded over
$635,000 to outstanding students since 1987.
From The President
As we close out our 25th year, WOASF is pleased to report that we awarded over $103,000 in scholarships to 50 very
worthy students this year. In doing so, we were also able to increase our award to $2,000 due to the amazing generosity of our
corporate sponsors and individual donors. Thank you very much.
In addition to our record amount of giving this year, we are pleased to an-
nounce our fully endowed CAPT Brad Johansen Memorial Scholarship, which was
made possible through our friends at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. We
have also established the USS Enterprise Scholarship in celebration of this warship’s
50 plus years of service life. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Taylor of Enterprise
Holdings for your generosity and your continuing support of our Sailors (see more on
page 7).
We’ve had many changes to our Board of Directors in the past few months.
We want to send our heartfelt thanks to Ken Nelson, our Chairman of the Board who
departed in May. Ken served tirelessly on our board for the past three and one half
years and we thank him for his devoted service. We are extremely grateful that
VADM Mike Malone, who was serving on our Finance committee, was unanimously
elected to succeed Ken. Thank you, Mike for continuing to support WOASF.
We are very sad to say farewell to my dear friend and board member Judy
Myers, as she and VADM Myers finish up a very successful tour at COMNAVAIRPAC next month, and head back to Washing-
ton, D.C. Judy was instrumental in bringing WOASF golf back to San Diego in February, where they held a very successful tour-
nament. Thank you for your service and commitment to WOASF Judy, we are going to miss you. We are also pleased to an-
nounce that Ron Hoppock has joined our Board. Welcome aboard, Ron.
As we prepare to begin another scholarship year, we want to remind you that our 2013 application will be available on
our website on October 1, 2012. We look forward to a successful year and we are extremely proud to assist in educating children
and spouses of the Navy Aviation community.

It has been another record breaking year for Wings Over America. WOASF received over $162,000 in scholarship contributions ($55,000 for endow-ments). We also had the most prolific year with our special events fundraising adding an inaugural golf tournament in Patuxent River and bringing golf back to San Diego after a five year hiatus. Your gen-erosity and participation enabled us to award $103,000 in scholarships this year., plus an addi-tional $5,000 in administered scholarships.
All this is a great news for WOASF, but there is still work to be done. The average in-state college tui-tion is over $17,000 and $38,000 for private col-leges. The new debt crisis in America is no longer home loans, but college debt. The average 2010 col-lege graduates owes over $25,000 in loans, totaling over $1 trillion dollars for the nation. College stu-dents need your help more than ever; between the rising cost of higher education and the lack-luster job market they find when they graduate, scholar-ships are pivotal to today’s college student.
We hope you will continue your commitment to WOASF and the scholarships we provide and chal-lenge each of our donors to increase their giving for 2013. Every dollar you give, makes a tremendous difference to our scholars.
Receiving a 2012Scholarship is an honor - to be classified with the high caliber of students, hard workers and contributors
associated with this foundation is more than flattering. The generosity of Wings Over America graces me time and freedom.
The granting of money towards my education allows me to spend less of my time paying for school and more of it studying,
experiencing the world, taking advantage of opportunities. Thus, the scholarship has given me the freedom to focus more on
experience-to take an unpaid internship over an introductory job, to study instead of going to work, to choose my own oppor-
tunities rather than being limited. I am exceptionally proud of my parents’ service in the Navy, they have taught me the value
of loyalty, hard work, and perseverance. This scholarship has reinforced those lessons; I consider myself exceptionally
blessed to have received a 2012 scholarship award.– Kira Adsit

Key Volunteer Program
The Key Volunteer Program is an initiative by WOASF to spread information about the foundation
beyond Virginia and California (or two current concentration areas). By increasing our volunteer base
in other aviation centric regions, WOASF hopes to increase the number of applicants and donors from
that region. Key Volunteers will assist WOASF with contacting regional School Liaison Officers and
guidance counselors to ensure that information about WOASF is available to current High School stu-
dents. Volunteers may also attend local college/scholarship fairs to inform students about opportunities
with WOASF. We hope to increase our applicant pool each year as well as have geographic diversity.
If desired, Key Volunteers may also organize and execute fundraising activities to support WOASF.
Sheila Stevens, in Jacksonville, FL is a “plank owner” in the Key Volunteer program. In addition to
helping spread the word about the scholarship to local students, Sheila is also part of the Jacksonville
Golf Tournament Leadership Team. Her knowledge of the area and connections with the active duty
community are invaluable to WOASF. She provides crucial information to WOASF about the Jack-
sonville community and since her involvement last year, we have seen an increase in applications from the Jacksonville area.
When asked why she takes time out of her busy life as a spouse, mother of two and consummate volunteer to help WOASF, Sheila said,
“I volunteer to make a difference and with the help of other volunteers we can continue to make a difference for so many.
I have been both a military spouse and child for 40+ years, I support and volunteer for many organizations, but The Wings Over Amer-
ica Scholarship Foundation is an organization that I have seen grow into what it has become today. It was not until recently that I truly
understood the difference it makes for many Navy spouses, sons and daughters of sailors. I am so excited to be a part of WOASF and
see it continue to support and empower the military families of Naval Air Forces seeking higher education.” Please join Sheila in our
Key Volunteer program and help WOASF spread its message throughout the country. For more information or to sign up, please con-
tact Christine Wilson, Executive Director of WOASF.
Receiving the Wings Over
America Scholarship has given
me the amazing opportunity to
attend college. Without the
assistance of scholarships, I
would never be able to attend
school. This scholarship also
meant very much to me be-
cause of the fact that it was for
military dependents. I feel honored to have been
chosen as a recipient and grateful that my dad’s
service has helped shape my future. Thank you so
much to the Wings Over America Foundation for
believing in me and for supporting my future! -

CAPT Brad Johanson Endowment
WOASF is proud to announce our newest endowment—The Brad Johnson Memorial Scholarship. WOASF
has awarded a CAPT Brad Johanson Memorial scholarship for the past two years, but now that the endowment
is complete, the scholarship will be awarded as a four year renewable scholarship. The endowment was funded
through the generosity of Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems.
CAPT Bradley Eugene Johanson joined the Navy in April 1977 and attended Jacksonville University from
1978 to 1980 graduating summa cum laude with a chemistry major. He obtained his Masters Degree in Na-
tional Security and Strategic Studies at the US Naval War College in 1995. After serving for over 30 years in
the US Navy, he retired in September 2008. During his naval career, he was the commanding officer of the VS-
29 Dragonflies and of the transport dock USS Denver. His last assignment was as commanding officer of the
aircraft carrier USS John C Stennis from 2005 to 2008. Shortly after retiring, he was diagnosed with Lou Ge-
hrig's disease. He faced the disease with courage and, while able, helped raise over $11,000 for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association to aid in ALS research.
USS Enterprise Scholarship
In December, we will say farewell to USS Enterprise.
She has served the nation for more than 50 years. Big E will be
missed, but the legacy of Enterprise is the proud service of thou-
sands of men and women who have made Enterprise come alive.
That legacy will remain alive through the USS Enterprise Schol-
arship administered by Wings Over America. The scholarship
was begun through the generosity of Andy and Barbara Taylor of
St. Louis. The Taylor family owns Enterprise Holdings, the com-
pany that operates the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car
Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands. Andy Taylor, the son of
company founder Jack Taylor, is chairman and chief executive
officer of Enterprise Holdings.
“My father named the company he founded after the
USS Enterprise, the aircraft carrier on which he served during
World War II,” Andy Taylor said. “More than 50 years later, our
commitment to our men and women in uniform remains strong.
Enterprise employs approximately 55,000 people in the United
States — 5,300 of whom are U.S. military veterans and active or
inactive reservists. The USS Enterprise Scholarship is still an-
other way for us to honor our military legacy.”
The first USS Enterprise scholarship was awarded this
June to Emily Smith. WOASF hopes to create a full endowment
for the USS Enterprise Scholarship so the legacy of Big E will
continue through the next generation. To learn more about this
scholarship or about endowing a scholarship, see our website.
The Maritime Patrol Association Scholarship
The Maritime Patrol Association, a Florida not-for-profit
corporation established in 2011 and headquartered in Jack-
sonville, Fla., is dedicated to its mission to be the premier
professional organization representing the U.S. Maritime
Patrol and Reconnaissance community by promoting the use
of the patrol and reconnaissance aircraft in the United States
Navy. The newly established group wanted to award schol-
arships in their community similar to the jet and helicopter
communities. The MPA chose WOASF to administer their
scholarship. Not only will the MPA be able to capitalize on
the expertise of WOASF for the scholarship application and
selection process but it will benefit the applicants as well.
Qualified applicants will be able to apply for the MPA as
well as a WOASF scholarship with the same application
package.
For more information about all scholarships administered by
WOASF, please visit our website.
