The Gospel chosen for the Feast of St. Paul the 1st Hermit is Matthew 11:25-30. St. Paul must have been very familiar with this passage because one could almost call it a hymn of joy because in it Christ quite literally rejoices in the Father’s plan for salvation. He praises the Father’s decision to hide himself from the learned and the clever and reveal the greatest truths first to the smallest child or more literally “the little ones”. St. Paul must of considered himself one of those “little ones”. It does not so much refer to age, status, the poor, the unimportant, the weak, those who are most certainly not the movers and shakers, the shapers of society. Meekness and humility two great virtues of St. Paul are hardly virtues if we use them as a way to hide from responsibility, an excuse for doing noting, never involving oneself in the God-given mission to create the world, to make something good of it. Rather, Christ praises a sense of poverty, of littleness which St. Paul acquired over the years because having much and having nothing does not make much difference. Paul proved with his life that whatever we have, it is never really ours. It is from God, and sooner or later it will have to be given back to Him. Christ praises a sense of meekness and humility that teaches us not to deny our powers and skills, not to retreat from them, but teaches us as St. Paul’s life rather not to make more of them than they really are. Not to become so taken up with what we can do by our design that we lose sight of what we must do, by God’s design. Through St. Paul’s example we see that littleness saves, that ultimate reliance on God, and a readiness to be directed by God’s will, even when, especially when that may seem; for no good reason at all, to contradict our own will. By Paul’s example and life we see that it works. Reliance on God brings us happiness. The last lines of the Gospel Christ promises, “Do what I do, be little, as I am, and you will find peace. My yoke is easy, my burden is light.” St. Paul shows us that once a person learns that sort of humility and simply stops trying to be influential, powerful, capable, once a person stops trying to direct the flow of people and things and events, something which can’t be done anyway, a real burden of anxiety is lifted. For such a person, as for Christ in the Gospel, no matter what else may be going on, suddenly there is room enough in one’s life for rejoicing as the life of St. Paul the First Hermit shows us in doing God’s will.

Kiedy byłem zdecydowanie młodszy, niŜ jestem teraz, zastanawiałem się, co to jest … ta PROSTACZKA. Proste słowo, wiadomo o co chodzi, ale jednak ja nie rozumiałem, nie znałem tego słowa. Inną rzeczą je to, Ŝe nigdy nikogo o to nie zapytałem. Tak samo jest z Biblią, niby nic trudnego, niby nic zaskakującego, ale gdy przychodzi do konkretnego zastanowienia się nad treścią okazuje się, Ŝe w wielu miejscach jest ona trudna do zrozumienia. Dzisiejsze Słowo, jakie otrzymujemy na uroczystość św. Pawła I Pustelnika, nie pozostawia Ŝadnych złudzeń i wątpliwości. Liczy się wierność, posłuszeństwo i zaufanie Bogu … To On jest tym, który moŜe sprawić, by nasze Ŝycie nie było utrudzone i obciąŜone, a pokrzepione Jego dobrocią, Jego miłością i Jego troską o kaŜdy nasz krok. Mimo, Ŝe czasem ból i cierpienie będą udziałem naszego Ŝycia, to jednak trudności te, przeŜywane w jedności z Jezusem, nie będą w stanie nas zdołować czy zniszczyć. Paweł Pustelnik przez prawie sto lat Ŝył na pustyni i pomimo, Ŝe wielu rzeczy po ludzku patrząc mu ciągle brakowało, to miał to co najcenniejsze. Miał świadomość, Ŝe nie musi się o nic troszczyć, gdyŜ zaufał Bogu i w Jego ręce oddał swoje Ŝycie. Drogi Bracie! Droga Siostro! Zaufaj Panu i nie bój się oddać Mu swojego Ŝycia ze wszystkim co ono zawiera. Nie ma znaczenia, ze jesteś szczęśliwą osoba czy tez nic ci się w Ŝyciu nie udaje. WaŜnym jest, Ŝe sam Bóg chce troszczyć się o Ciebie i mieć na uwadze „wszystkie twoje troski i kłopoty”.

Members of the Pauline Fathers will be gathering in their respective monasteries and parishes to celebrate their spiritual father Saint Paul the First Hermit on January 15th. Founded more than 800 years ago, the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit (the Paulines) remember their spiritual founder of the Order. Saint Paul is considered the order’s patriarch, be-cause he was the inspiration to thousands who wanted to devote their lives in the service of God and His people. As a young man, St. Paul left his home and became a hermit, living in the desert in Upper Egypt. He lived there a hundred years. Saint Antony the Abbot compared St. Paul to the Prophet Elias and to St. John who lived in the desert. Saint Antony later inspired his pupils to living the “Pauline” spirit, as hermits in the wilderness, praying to the Lord and living in con-templation. It is said that Saint Antony, through God’s revelation learned about St. Paul’s presence in the desert. After seeking for three days, St. Antony found St. Paul. According to legend, when St. Antony visited St. Paul, a raven brought them a loaf of bread. “See how good God is, “cried St. Paul. For sixty years this bird has been bringing me half a loaf everyday; now you have come and Christ has doubled the provision for His soldiers. To this day, the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit has in its coat of arms two lions, palms trees, and a raven holding bread in his beak. The spiritual descendants of St. Paul have perpetuated the beautiful story. St. Paul is the “spiritual founder” of the Pauline Fathers and Brothers, but the order was actually established by the Blessed Eusebius in Hungary. It is he who, in 1215, brought to-gether the hundred of hermits living in the wilderness into a reli-gious order. From 1250, the Pauline Fathers and Brothers spread throughout Hungary, opening nearly 200 monasteries, thus giving great service to the Lord, the people of Hungary and to the nation’s culture. At one time the Order had six prov-inces throughout Europe, with hundreds of monasteries. Their missionaries went even to South America, from the Portuguese province. Today there are Pauline Fathers’ monas-teries in Hungary, Poland, Italy, Germany, Africa, England, Bialorus, Czech Republic, France, Cameroon, Latvia, Slova-kia, Ukraine, United States, Australia, and Croatia. In this country, in the American Province we have three monasteries, Doylestown, Buffalo and Kittanning near Pitts-burgh, our Novitiate House. We are involved in working here at the Shrine but also in parish work, hospital work at the re-quest of cardinals and bishops with the permission of our Father General in New York, Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, and Pennsyl-vania. The main apostolate of the Pauline Order remains the same as the past to promote devotion to our Blessed Mother and the hearing of confessions while at the same time conduct-ing retreats, parish missions, days of recollection. While remain-ing faithful to their heritage, the Pauline Fathers do not hesitate to reach out here at the Shrine to Rachel’s Vineyard, Prayer Groups, Eucharistic Adoration, Spiritual Direction, Magnificat Group, Youth Group, through the Radio and media and basi-cally through personal contact. Here in the American Province the Pauline Fa-thers while acquiring new apostolates and new things still keep most of the old ones.
