other children will have their meetings next term. Please ask if you are
not sure.

SCIENCE OPEN AFTERNOON TUESDAY 11TH APRIL,
2PM-3PM
On Tuesday 11th April we invite all of our Roseneath families to join us for
an open afternoon. Come and see what your children have been learning
with their science topic this term. You might even have a chance to do an
experiment and test your own gathering and interpreting data skills!
How is a chrysalis formed?
A caterpillar is a beautiful creature, but the way it turns into a butterfly
isn't gorgeous. A caterpillar is a Lepidoptera,(an insect group including
butterflies and moths). It lives in hedges, bushes and milkweed. Milkweed
is more commonly known as the swan plant. A synonym for chrysalis is
pupa. But how is a chrysalis (or pupa) formed?
A caterpillar (also known as larvae) forms a silk harness-known as a cremaster. Once the cremaster is made and completed,
the caterpillar hangs from it and digests itself inside its own skin!
It sheds that skin, but then grows a hardened, shell-like version on the digested caterpillar. The shell-like skin on the larvae
is the chrysalis or the pupa. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar turns into a gooey soup except for the nervous system, breathing
tubes and imaginal disks which are small clusters of cells. Once the soup is made, the caterpillar goo rearranges itself into a
butterfly.
When the butterfly comes out of the pupa, the butterfly starts the production again. Next time you see a butterfly, think
about what it has been through.

TABLOID SPORTS
We had a wonderful time at Crawford Green last Thursday. Thank you to all of our willing parent helpers who supported the
groups and to Friends for the sausage sizzle which was a bit of a highlight! Our student leaders should be congratulated for
their preparation and skills in running the event.
My favourite game is Sharky Sharky because there were places that you were only allowed and territories. Alex was a very
good leader because he was funny and took us to the right places at the right time. Abigail was good at leading the games
because she explained the game very well and reminded the people at the right time.

TE PAPA TRIP: LOWER BRIDGE, UPPER DECK, THE LONG BOAT
TUESDAY 21ST MARCH
On Tuesday our Year 3-6 students explored The Bug Lab exhibition at Te Papa as part
of their learning for science. A huge thank you to all of our parent helpers for joining
us on the trip.
Te Papa Bug Lab Trip
What we learnt:
Mosquitoes:
There are 3,500 mosquito species
Only 5 or 6 types of mosquitoes carry diseases and sting you
You get a mosquito itch from it spitting into you before they drink your blood
Mosquitoes only drink a small bit of your blood before your blood makes a wall against it
Mosquitoes also collect pollen
Dragonflies:
Dragonflies see the world in slow motion; it makes it easier to catch their prey
Dragonflies were alive before the dinosaurs
Dragonflies catch 95% of their prey
Dragonflies are the fastest flying animals on earth
Orchid Mantis:
The orchid mantis look like orchid flowers, making it easier to catch prey
To bugs, the orchid mantis glows like a flower and stands out
They wait until their prey is really close. She, then, strikes and eats it
The orchid mantis is white
Emerald Wasp:
Emerald wasps are black and green
The emerald wasp stings the cockroaches vein connected to their two front legs
They sting the brain to turn the cockroach into a zombie. The cockroach can move but it doesn’t want to
The emerald wasp leads the cockroach to its nest and then lays an egg on it
They bury the cockroach. A new emerald wasp hatches out and eats the cockroach
Our Wonderings:
I wonder why emerald wasps lay their eggs on a cockroach. – Allegra
I wonder why hornets attack bees. - Samantha
