Alan Stout sets his sights on the record Alan Stout of Mountain Home AR is the clear leader in the Barry Crane Top 500, the race to win more masterpoints than any other ACBL member during 2005. Through July 18, he had won 1766.16 points for the year and was more than 600 points ahead of the closest contender, who happens to be his frequent partner, Don Stack of Kansas City MO. Those impressive point totals make Stout a favorite in the contest, but he has greater ambitions than just winning the trophy. His goal is to break the record of 3584.26 points set by Jim Barrow in 1999. As of July 18, he was just 46 points behind Barrow’s total in mid-July 1999. Stout has had some spectacularly successful weeks so far. He won more than 100 points at three different regionals – Wilmington DE (Feb. 21-27), Oklahoma City OK (May 9-15) and Jackson MS (June 6-12). His best tournament was the Pittsburgh NABC in March, where he won 147.20 points. That included 75 points for placing second in the NABC Mixed Pairs with partner Lynn Deas. Through Sunday, Stout had won 36.11 points in Atlanta, including 32.06 for placing 3/4 in the top bracket of the Gatlinburg KO Teams. His team placed 10th overall in yesterday’s Senior Swiss for another 26.67 points. Stout’s friend and partner, Don Stack, has set up a web site that tracks Stout’s progress: www.geocities.com/donstacker Earlier this week, Stout spoke with the Daily Bulletin staff about his strategies for winning and the physical, mental and emotional demands of his campaign: You’re past the halfway point in the year. What do you tell people who ask you what this has been like? Four words: “You have no idea..” It’s really hard to describe the experience, and it’s much more difficult than I expected. It’s a mental and emotional roller coaster, with peaks and valleys every day. What’s your travel schedule? I’ll be playing 44 weeks this year, 18 sessions per week, three sessions per day in tournaments in 25 states. I also have three tournaments “in mothballs” that I’ll add to the schedule if I need them to win or break the record. Learning about women’s bridge

By Beth PalmerThe ACBL and the Women’s International Team

Trial Committee (WITT) sponsored a reception forparticipants in the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams– and other interested women.

The purpose of the reception was to provide anopportunity for women players to socialize, discussthe hands and become acquainted with some of thetop women players.

About 50 women of all different skill levelsattended. Among the experts who were present wereyour author, Kerri Sanborn, Lynn Deas, MildredBreed, Gail Greenberg, Jill Levin, DebbieRosenberg, Irina Levitina and many others, including the top German pair of Sabine Auken andDaniella Van Arnim.

Besides talking about the bridge hands whichhad just been played and generally socializing, therewas discussion about why attendance in women’sevents has decreased of late. Several goodsuggestions were made.

Among the newer players at the NABCs, HansaNarasimhan, Ricki Gordon and Pat Chambers cameup with some good suggestions.

One idea was to have a place on the ACBL website where women interested in forming teams orpartnerships could contact each other about playingprior to the tournament. If they wanted, they couldpractice online to find out if they are compatible. The ACBL and WITT hope to hold a similar eventin Denver during the Women’s Pairs.

This is held prior to the Women’s Board-a-Match Teams and will help women partnerships tofind teams for the Board-a-Match Teams.

If anyone has any suggestions about how toincrease attendance in women’s events, pleasecontact any member of the WITT Committee. Thee-mail address is [email protected]

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSMaking a PLAN

By Lynn BergReading

bridge books is acommonoccupation of theup-and-comingbridge player. We buy books, borrow them, andare alwayslooking forsomething whichwill improve ourgame. We seemto hope that if wecould just find the

right book—or the right gadget or convention—the game would be easier and our scores higher.

In fact, even the simplest conventions don’tcome up all that often. I’ve gone whole sessionswithout even using Stayman or transfers, let aloneany more esoteric conventions. It is thefundamentals which win or lose most bridgegames: Do I remember what my partner led? Isthat ♥7 good?

Reviewing information from basic books canbe more useful that reading new ones. Here’s theexcellent PLAN for play of the hand whichAudrey Grant includes in the Diamond Series,Play of the Hand book.

P is for Pause. Once the opening lead hasbeen made, stop and consider its significance.Review the bidding in your mind and correlate itsmessage with the lead. Don’t call even for a

singleton in the dummy untilyou have completed all foursteps of the PLAN process.Remember your objective. Ifyou are playing notrump, how many tricks must youtake? If it’s a suit contract, how many losers can youafford?

L is for Look (at yourwinners or losers). Chooseone hand as the master hand, and then use the oppositehand as its complement. Gothrough the hand suit by suit:don’t just make a hazy guess.

A is for Analyze. Whatare your alternatives foraccomplishing your goal? Innotrump, if you do not haveenough winners, how can youdevelop more? In a suit, ifyou have too many losers, how can you eliminate them?

Plan a specific order foryour actions. The mostimportant question in anytrump contract is—“Is thereanything I should do before I draw trumps?” Thisquestion is particularly significant if you do nothave the trump ace.

N stands for Now. Now start playing thecontract. Try to maintain an even tempo. If things

go wrong, you may have to pause and gothrough this planning process again to develop a“plan B,” but many times you will be able toplay quite rapidly after you have paused andmade a plan.

Opening lead: ♥A. The lead of an ace atthe five or six level does not guarantee theking. One frequently wants to lead anunsupported ace at these rarified levels. Theking is normally led from the A-K at the five orsix level.

Bidding commentary: South’s jump shift isa game force, and 4NT is a form of Blackwooddepending upon partnership agreement.

Defensive commentary: There is someconfusion as to how to signal when partnerleads an ace and a singleton pops up in dummy. Some play suit preference. When the possibilityof a trump promotion exists, however, which isthe case here, an encouraging card should beinterpreted as a request to continue the suit. If

East plays a second heart, forcing dummy to ruff, the contract is defeated as West’s ♠J 8 2 morphsinto the setting trick. A heart continuation makesfar more sense than a diamond shift. TheBlackwood response has marked North with the♦A and West can hardly be void.

Most 16-year-olds at this tournament arecaddies. A few are bridge players. Travis McKee,of Woodstock GA, is both.

Thursday night, McKee played in the Charitygame with his grandmother. The rest of the timehe has been caddying in the Newcomers area. Helikes working there and requested to be able tostay. When asked why, he stated, “The playershere are laid back. They are so nice.”

When he was 11, McKee became interested in

playing bridge from his grandmother. Shewanted him to learn duplicate instead of partybridge, so took him to Priscilla Smith’s club andEasybridge! lessons. He has covered the firsttwo books in class and read the third on hisown. He plays once a week and has more than50 masterpoints.

When asked if he has any goals in bridge,he said he wants to eventually be a Life Master. In the meantime, school takes precedence. Hewill be a high school junior next year. Collegeplans are being made. “I’d like to major inengineering or architecture, perhaps at GeorgiaTech.” said McKee.

Tournament director Alice Kinningham saysshe only has to tell him to do something onceand it gets done. “Besides being a great worker,he has an advantage over the other caddiesbecause he also plays,” she said. Priscilla Smithadded, “I’ve enjoyed watching him mature overthe last five years.”

Ruling the Gameby Mike Flader

Associate National TournamentDirector

Played Cards — part 3Law 46A says that declarer must clearly state

both the suit and the rank of a card called fromdummy. If declarer fails to do so, Law 46B detailsthe consequences.

The director should be aware of theparenthetical clause in Law 46B that states thatthe restrictions enumerated later apply exceptwhen declarer’s different intention isincontrovertible. Failure to take this segment intoaccount may cause the director to err in makingsome rulings. Whether the intention wasincontrovertible or not is a matter of judgment.

It is worth noting that directors need to bealert to situations where an apparent inadvertencyis actually an instance of the declarer thinkingahead, i.e., calling a card to the current trick thathe really intends to play to a subsequent trick. Forexample, declarer has led his singleton todummy’s ace–king of an off suit, intending to takea pitch before drawing trumps. Unfortunately, before playing both of dummy’s high cards, hecalls for a trump. This call was not inadvertent.Declarer intended the call, and should not beallowed to change it.

The idea of intent also applies to Law 45C4B,Correction of an Inadvertent Designation.Declarer is entitled to change the call of a cardplayed from dummy, but only if he does sowithout pause for thought and his first call wasunintended. For example, say declarer holds theA–x–x in a suit in his hand and leads low towardsthe dummy’s Q–x, calling for the queen. He thennotices that his LHO has played the king. Declarermust not be allowed to change his call no matterhow quickly he changes it. His first call was notinadvertent.

The following applies to an incompletedesignation of a card to be played:

1. If declarer calls for a suit, but not a rank, asin “play a spade,” he is deemed to have called forthe lowest spade.

2. If he calls “high” or words of like import,he is deemed to have called the highest card. Infourth seat, he is deemed to have called the lowestwinning card of the suit indicated. If he says “winit” or words of like import, he is deemed to havecalled the lowest winning card. If he calls “low”or words of like import, he is deemed to havecalled the lowest card of the suit designated.

3. If declarer designates a rank but not a suit,in leading he is deemed to have continued the suitin which dummy won the preceding trick as longas there is a card of that rank in that suit that canbe played. In all other cases, declarer must play acard from the dummy of the rank designated if hecan do so. If there are two or more cards that canlegally be played, declarer must designate whichone was intended.

4. If declarer designates a card that is not indummy, that call is void, and declarer maydesignate any legal card.

5. If declarer indicates a play withoutdesignating either a suit or rank as by saying “playanything” or words of like import, either defendermay designate the play from dummy.

Now East again faced a Hobson’schoice – let Mary use her ♥2 to ruff a spade, orexit with a heart, at which point Mary would winwith the 9 and play the good ♣J, forcing East touse his last trump. She would get the ♥2 byruffing a spade at the end for the game going trick.

At the other table, West did not enter theauction, so South ended in 3NT, down two on thespade lead.

He should havetried breadcrumbs

A national champion from South Carolina wasseen on the street in downtown Atlanta during theNABC looking lost.

Two passersby stopped to ask if he waswaiting for someone.

No, he said. He had been in the Benihanarestaurant and had placed his order. His cell phonerang, so he politely stepped outside theestablishment to take the call.

When he was finished talking, he realized hehad “lost” the restaurant, and he needed helplocating it.

Be a friend“Only a few of us will win championships

but all of us can win new friends. And, unlikethe coveted silver trophies, we keep the friendswithout having to win them again and again.”

The late Dick Frey, editor of The BridgeBulletin, wrote these words in 1960 but they arestill applicable 40 years later.

Aileen Osofsky, ChairmanNational Goodwill Committee

per week, three sessions per day in tournaments in25 states. I also have three tournaments “inmothballs” that I’ll add to the schedule if I needthem to win or break the record. My budget can’tafford plane tickets, so I drive almost everywhere, sometimes 1000 miles between tournaments. I’ll beaway from home for 108 days in a row betweenJune 6 and September 12.

You must be pretty tired of hotel rooms. Yes, but I book apartment-style

accommodations in most cities, so it’s a little morehome-like. I rarely stay at the tournament site. Mychoice is an extended-stay hotel with a kitchenette. When I get to town on Monday, I go to the grocerystore to stock up for the week and I eat almost allmy meals in my room.

What’s your overall strategy for the year? I spent 14 months planning this. I’m convinced

that good organization is responsible for about halfthe masterpoints – scheduling the right tournaments, lining up good teammates, playing in the rightevents. I play on six-man teams and we enter everyavailable knockout event because that’s where themasterpoints are.

No pair games?Very few. I actually love matchpoint events, but

not this year. At pairs, you’re on the edge of successor failure on every hand. Team play is less stressfuland offers opportunities to sit out and rest.

Do you have a favorite regional?Yes, Tunica, Mississippi. And unfortunately, I’m

not even going to play there this year. My travel andpartnership arrangements worked out better for theregional in Fort Wayne, Indiana for that week.

How do the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. start timeswork out for you?

It’s not my preferred schedule. If I were playingjust two sessions a day, I’d probably like being ableto finish early and have the evening off for dinnerand rest. But playing three sessions a day, I’d reallyrather play knockouts in the morning instead of solate in the evening.

How do you conserve your energy?I try to stick to a routine. I get up an hour and a

half before the first session, I eat light meals and Iuse the lunch and dinner hours to rest. I also try tocompress my day by sitting out the first half ofmorning matches and the last half of eveningmatches whenever possible. I do, however, like tobe in for the second half of a “money round” orfinal KO match because that’s when my adrenalineis highest. Swiss Teams are a little more tiring. Ihave to play all the matches because unlike theKOs, the Swiss masterpoint awards are reduced forsitouts. My teammates have been great aboutaccommodating that schedule.

Do you do anything special to stay mentallysharp?

I’ve learned to conserve my brain power byputting put my mind on “autopilot” for routinehands. When a tough decision comes up, though, Ihave to be ready to shift into a higher gear. I feellike I have to stay at or near my mental peak everyday.

I also try to avoid talking about bridge hands. When I’m away from the table, just about the lastthing I want to hear from anyone is “I have a handfor you ... “.

What point-winning pace have you set foryourself?

My goal for a typical regional week is to win 80points. A “bad” regional for me is 60 points, and Ican get pretty down after one of those weeks.

Do you ever get up in the morning and thinkyou’d rather have a root canal than play anothersession?

Yes, often. But if my team wins a few matches, the feeling goes away and I’m ready to go again.

So what do you do for fun? There’s no time for fun this year. Even when I

Good defense, good offense

By Barry RigalMike Becker showed me this deal from the first

round of the Spingold Teams. Partnering RichardSchwartz, Becker played 4♠ as South on this deal:

Becker received the ♥5 lead to the ♥Q, ♥K and♥A and immediately led the ♣9 from hand.

West won and returned a trump. Becker won indummy and led to the ♣Q. West won the ♣K andled another trump to prevent declarer from ruffingtwo clubs.

With this defense, the contract appears todepend on the diamond finesse, but Becker found away to improve his chances. He won the secondtrump in hand, cashed the ♥J and ruffed a heart. Hethen ruffed a club with his last trump, ruffed anotherheart in dummy and drew the last trump. This wasthe ending:

♠ — ♠ —♥ — ♥ —♦ K 9 ♦ J 10 4 ♣ J ♣ —

Becker had stripped out all the hearts so hecould lead safely exit with the ♣7, pitching adiamond from his hand. West won and wasendplayed, but even if East had held the last club, the contract would still have come down to nothingworse than the diamond finesse.

Take your tricksBy Barry Rigal

Kerri Sanborn saw a deal in yesterday’s DailyBulletin (titled “It’s a croc”) where DavidBerkowitz and Larry Cohen defeated 3♠ by twotricks on a crocodile coup.

Sanborn had quite an interesting result on theboard, but as declarer instead of defender.

Here’s the deal, from the second semifinalsession of the Life Master Pairs:

Dlr: East ♠ A 7 6 4 2Vul: Both ♥ 7 4

♦ 6 3 2♣ A 9 3

♠ 10 5 ♠ K 8 3♥ K 9 8 5 2 ♥ Q J♦ Q ♦ K 10 9 8 5♣ Q 10 8 7 4 ♣ J 6 2

♠ Q J 9♥ A 10 6 3♦ A J 7 4♣ K 5

West North East SouthPass 1NT

Pass 2♥ Pass 2♠Pass 2NT Pass 3♠All Pass

Sanborn and her partner duplicated theBerkowitz-Cohen transfer auction to arrive in 3♠and she also received the ♦Q lead, which sheducked. Next came a spade lead, ducked to East’s♠K, and East returned the ♥Q. Sanborn duckedthis, too. West encouraged with a high spot card,so East continued with the ♥J, which Sanbornwon.

Sanborn now led the ♠Q from hand. WhenWest produced the ♠10, she drew the inferencethat hearts were divided 5-2. That meant that ifshe played three rounds of clubs, she would beover-ruffed when she tried to reach dummy with aheart ruff.

So instead of attempting to ruff a club in hand, she ran all the trumps to come to this ending:

♠ 2♥ —♦ 6 3♣ A 9 3

♠ — ♠ —♥ K 9 ♥ —♦ — ♦ K 10 9 ♣ Q 10 8 7 ♣ J 6 2

♠ — ♥ 10♦ A J 7♣ K 5

On the lead of dummy’s last trump, East hadto pitch a club. Sanborn threw the ♦7 from hand, took the diamond finesse and caught West in aheart-club squeeze. The non-simultaneous doublesqueeze led to dummy’s ♣9 winning the last trickfor a score of +170.

A little gemBy Barnet Shenkin

South, Billy Cohen, declared 4♥ on the lead ofthe ♣A. Declarer ruffed, played a heart to the ace,and ruffed another club, then played a heart to theking, followed by the ♥Q, East pitching the ♣10.

It appeared that West’s shape rated to be1=3=2=7. Had declarer ducked a spade after cashingthe ♥Q, the ♣K would be cashed to leave thisposition:

♠ 9 5♥ 2♦ 6 5 2♣ —

♠ — ♠ 10 8 7♥ — ♥ —♦ Q 10 ♦ K 8 7♣ Q 9 8 6 ♣ —

♠ A K 6 4♥ —♦ A J 9♣ —

West must lead a club, and East must pitch adiamond as declarer ruffs in dummy. Now declarercan lead a diamond from dummy and duck East’sking if he plays it. If East plays low, declarer playsthe ♦A and a low diamond, scoring the ♦J for his10th trick. East can guarantee the defeat of thecontract, however, by discarding the ♦K whenWest plays a club and declarer ruffs in dummy.

Instead of ducking the first spade, declarerplayed the ♠A and a low spade to the 9, leaving thisposition:

♠ 5♥ 2♦ 6 5 2♣ J

♠ — ♠ J 7♥ — ♥ — ♦ Q 10 ♦ K 8 7 2♣ Q 9 8 6 ♣ —

♠ K 6 4♥ — ♦ A J 9♣ —

East returned the ♦2. South tried the ♦9,hoping the 10 was with East. I was able to win the♦10, cash the ♣Q and return the ♦Q to defeat thecontract.

Declarer could have succeeded in the actualposition by rising with the ♦A and playing the ♦9. I would have been on lead in this position:

♠ 5♥ 2♦ 2♣ J

♠ — ♠ J 10♥ — ♥ —♦ — ♦ K 8 7♣ Q 9 8 6 ♣ —

♠ K 6 4♥ —♦ 9♣ —

The ♣Q and another club would squeeze East, who would have to give up his spade guard or pitchthe ♦K.

Chess players know that they have to use theirpawns wisely if they expect to win. Bridge playershave to do the same thing with their spot cards.

Against 3NT, North led the ♣6, won the bydummy’s ♣7 with the ♣5 and ♣2 being played inturn. Declarer Bill Arlinghaus, Ann Arbor MI, wasplaying in the Saturday one-session Board-a-Matchteam game and could see that 3NT was cold with adiamond finesse. How could he make four to winthe board?

If he led the ♦9 he could set up a third diamondtrick on power. To do so, he would have to let Southin once and when he did, they would cash four orfive heart tricks. Seeing this, Arlinghaus shrewdlyled the ♦4. It went ♦2, ♦3 and ♣4. Wow! When isthe last time you’ve seen that?

Making the overtrick won the board. At theother table, his teammates, Jacob Morgan, ofMadison WI, and Martin Harris, Chicago IL, heldthe contract to three for a win helping them tie for5th overall.

have a day off, my mind is always on winningpoints. I try to unwind by watching a movie or golfon TV when I have a break. Going for a walkhelps, too.

What’s been the most rewarding part of thisexperience?

The players have been great. Everyone seemsto be rooting for me, and I’m getting lots ofemotional support. I have no real enemies in thebridge world. It’s nothing like the McKenney racesof the 1980s, when Barry Crane created bitterrivalries among the leaders. I was involved in someof those contests, and the atmosphere was electric... but I definitely don’t need that type ofexcitement this year.

What are your plans for 2006? I plan to sleep until about March. Then I’ll do

some fishing and probably go back to my “normal”schedule of playing around 18 tournaments a year, including a few sectionals.

So you’ll be relieved when the year is finallyover?

You have no idea.

Good news and bad newsThe good: Barry Harper’s team picked up 19

IMPs on one board during the Summer NABC. Atone table his team was plus 1210 in 6♥ doubled. Atthe other table, the team earned plus 600 fordefeating 6♣ two tricks redoubled. It would havebeen a 21-IMP pickup had they been vulnerable. The bad news? They weren’t playing IMPs. It wasboard-a-match, which means that no matter what themargin, the most they could get on one board wasone.

Active EthicsGreg Woods of Westport CT stopped by the

Daily Bulletin office to report on a notable act ofsportsmanship by his opponents. Joon Pahk andSam Leong of Berkeley CA had gone down three ina vulnerable 3NT contract when they played Woods’team in the third round of a Swiss team event.

Over dinner, they were discussing the handand Pahk and Leong realized that they wereactually down four. They came back from dinnerand reported their error to the directors, whochanged the score. The correction turned a win forPahk and Leong’s team into a tie.

for all seasons. The temperatures in largeconvention center rooms are difficult to maintain, particularly in the heat of lengthy bridgecompetition. In Atlanta in July, think Minneapolisin January. Convention card reminder• Each player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do notsufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, arenot acceptable substitutes.

This restriction maybe lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent roundafter convention cards have been properly preparedand approved by the director. Further, thepartnership will receive a 1/6 board matchpointpenalty for each board played, commencing with thenext round and continuing until the restriction islifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at thediscretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention cardbut has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign suchpenalties as he deems to be appropriate under thecircumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties isthe encouragement of full compliance with ACBLregulations.

After North, Jerry Bare, showed 5-5 in themajors, South, Mike Savage, liked his hand eventhough he only had 15 high card points. He cue bid4♣ showing the ♣A and a heart fit. Bare bid aspecial version of 4NT. This asked for key cards inboth suits he had shown. It is called 6-card key cardand can be used when a partnership bids and raisestwo suits or when one of them has opened 1NT andthe other shown two suits.

Here, Bare was able to bid slam, despite acombined holding of 24 HCP because of South’sfitting cards. Making 6♥ was an 11 IMP pickup.

Bracketed knockouts are the No. 1 reason forthe ongoing popularity of Mid-Atlantic regionals.our tournaments. Morning KOs, prime time KOs,compact KOs, dinner bell KOs, late-night compactKOs . . . no one offers more. So each knockout isnamed after one of our District 7 regional sites, oranother locale for a specific reason listed below.

Also, we are paying tribute to those playerswho gained fame and admiration within ourborders. Various side game series bear the namesof past bridge giants. (If you notice that MargaretWagar of Atlanta is not included, that’s becausethe ACBL already has the Wagar Women’sKnockouts in Summer NABCs.)

Here’s what’s behind the names, inchronological order.

Atlanta KOs: Your hosts, of course, andusually the site of the ACBL’s largest Labor Dayregional. This year, however, the Atlanta Regionalwill be even more festive, running Dec. 26 throughJan. 1, including a big New Year’s Eve party.

Lou Bluhm Side Game Series: For thosewho played tournament bridge in the Seventiesand Eighties, you know that no one betterexemplified our game than Lou Bluhm. He wasone of this country’s leading players, winningnumerous NABC pair and team titles. But Loumight best be remembered as a player whoseethics and professionalism were beyond reproach.A member of the ACBL Hall of Fame, he won thefirst ACBL Distinguished Player Award — anaward that was created because of Lou. He died in1990.

Coastal Georgia KOs: Unit 202 covers aneastern swath of the state and has been host toregionals in Augusta, Jekyll Island and Savannah, most recently last October at Jekyll.

Chuck Whidden Side Game Series: Abehind-the-scenes pioneer in many aspects of thegame, Chuck was best known as the Mid-Atlantic’s first web master. He was a tireless, unselfish worker who sought no recognition. AfterChuck’s death in 2003, his wife, Kathy, said thatChuck was most proud of being voted the GeorgiaState Unit Sportsman of the Year. Kathy, an award-winning director, retired this year . . . although sheis overseeing the information desk at thistournament.

Gatlinburg KOs: ACBL regional record-setter for four consecutive years. Is a 10,000 tableregional possible?

Knoxville KOs: The center of Unit 165,which hosts Gatlinburg every year and providesmany of the volunteers. Knoxville also runs two ofthe district’s larger sectionals each year in the city-owned bridge center.

Bernard Warshauer Side Game Series:Bernard, a well-known judge from Sumter SC,was a five-term district director, from 1979 until1994. He served in various other volunteer andadministrative positions and was a member of theACBL Goodwill Committee. Bernard died in1998.

Columbia KOs: The Mid-Atlantic holds aregional in Columbia every three to six years, andthe hosts always do a great job. We return Oct.16–22, 2006.

Charlotte KOs: The last Charlotte Regionalwas 10 years ago — when, as this year, there wasan Atlanta NABC and the Labor Day regionallanded in Charlotte. We’ve got a great new site forthe Aug. 30–Sept. 5 tournament, one we alreadyhave booked for autumn 2007.

Morganton KOs: Eldon and Susie Claymanmoved here in 1992, set up a bridge club in thebasement of their home, and put this foothills townon the bridge map. The unit has fewer than 250members, yet hosts four sectionals a year Ñaveraging close to 300 tables each — withunparalleled hospitality.

Hilton Head KOs: Always one of our mostpopular sites, and it will be one of the ACBL’slargest regionals next year. Schedule yourmidwinter respite for Feb. 6–12.

Bobby McMahan Side Game Series: A pastDistrict 7 president and our district director from1994 until his death in 1997, Bobby was alongtime force in South Carolina bridge. A skilledplayer, teacher and goodwill ambassador, he wasone of our most outgoing and popular officials.

Myrtle Beach KOs: Ever since our lastregional in 1999, one of the most asked questionshas been, “When are we going back?” The answer:Dec. 5–11. A brand-new Marriott property on thebeach is our venue, and we’ll return for the 2008and 2010 New Year’s regionals.

Washington Side Game Series: The nation’scapital is the District 6 capital, too. The nextNABC is Summer 2009.

Macon KOs: The most active bridge group inUnit 114 outside Atlanta is 90 miles south. Twoopen and one non-LM sectional are run each yearat the new clubhouse, the product of fund- raisingand generosity in the bridge community earlier thisdecade.

Raleigh KOs: Our Memorial Day regional ineven-number years, and it’s always the largest inthe ACBL. Next: May 23–29, 2006.

Jerry Machlin Side Game Series: Jerry isidentified with District 6, but as the foundingfather of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference, healso had a great impact on District 7. Jerry, alongtime and colorful director, died in 1997.

Cape Fear KOs: Regionals in February ofodd-number years are held in downtownWilmington, a fun and easy-to-get-around site.Next: Feb. 19–25, 2007.

Greenville KOs: District 7’s most recentregional (June) was in downtown Greenville, closeto the geographical center of our district. Wereturn June 11–17, 2007.

Nashville KOs: A tip of the hat to District 10,which reciprocates with District 7 in advertising, publicity and fund-raising. Our neighbors havecontributed to hospitality here, just as District 7 iscontributing to hospitality at the Summer 2007NABC in Nashville.

Chattanooga KOs: One of our infrequent butreliable regional sites. Next visit to the Choo Choois Dec. 1–7, 2008.

Billy Woodson Side Game Series: Bestknown around the Charlotte area, Billy is a formerMid- Atlantic president and was our districtdirector from 1973 until 1979. He served asspecial consultant to the ACBL one year and is inthe South Carolina bridge hall of fame. He isinventor of the Woodson Two-Way No-Trump.

Charleston Strati-Flighted Swiss Teams:The site of our inaugural New Year’s regional in2003, Charleston instantly became the ACBL’smost popular. Attendance soared this year, andwe’ll be back to ring in 2007 and 2009.
