ESA—Angels Among Us Ruth Archambeau, ESA Kansas State Council President
Greetings! Where has the summer gone? We are having a wonder-
ful spell of cool weather, feels like fall, my favorite time of year!
I was so honored to represent Kansas at IC Convention in St. Louis
in July. There were 36 Kansas sisters, 6 husbands and 1 son in at-
tendance. One of the highlights was being able to carry the Kansas
flag during the flag ceremony. That was very special. Thank you for
the opportunity.
I look forward to the August State Council Meeting in Garden City,
August 25-27, hosted by the Alpha Zeta Chapter in Garden City. A
special thank you goes out to these sisters. Peggy Harrison is plan-
ning an inspiring workshop with the focus on adoption. The theme

waiting for this next season of Angels!
There were quite a few Kansans in St.
Louis to do our share of hosting as MARC
members at our IC Convention. It was a
very “Inspiring” Convention, with our
own Kim Kummer being elected as 1st
Vice President.
We will be assembling the district books at
our meeting in Garden City. Maybe we can all try to attend anoth-

President’s Message
Executive Board Retreat By Nancy Urbauer Recording Secretary
President Ruth Archambeau held her Executive Board Retreat on June 2-
3, 2017 at the Holiday Inn Express in Andover, Kansas. Members met
and journeyed to Sumo, a Japanese Restaurant for supper. Following
our meal, we met at the hotel and had an informal evening of sharing and
getting to know each other.
Saturday morning Ruth called the meeting to order. All members were in attendance. Chaplain
Rita Baker opened the meeting with prayer. Ruth presented each member with a gift and small
journal. She also presented Phyllis Simmons with her hand carry, as Phyllis was unable to at-
tend installation in May at state convention.
Each board member gave their theme and spoke about their goals for the year. Cyndie Ewy,
First Vice President spoke about her immediate goal to fill the rest of her state board positions.
Cheryl Pucket, Second Vice President announced the dates were set for the year, November 3-5
at Heartspring with Jim Ahrens providing a fundraising event. Plans are tentative for a free

association. She plans to add a little fun to answering roll call.
Treasurer, Mary Ann Johnson’s goal is to be a good steward of our
money. Peggy Harrison, Workshop Coordinator, is working on her
theme with emphasis on heroes. Workshops, at each board meeting,
will focus on activities and speakers. Becky Bumgarner, Corre-
sponding Secretary’s theme is “Keeping in Touch with Angels.” She
reported she will be assisting Ruth and handling all that Ruth wants
throughout the year and will be responsible for any roster changes.
Sandie White, Membership Director handed out a summary on mem-
bership goals She is planning on fun things this year and challenged
each board member to do the online lessons and stressed participa-
tion of chapter members. Phyllis Simmons’, Parliamentarian, plans
are to see that we follow the rules and hopes there will be no by-laws
changes. Rita Baker, Chaplain, reported she is working on the Prayer
Chain and is working on her theme. Counselor, Jill Richards’ goal is
to raise enough money to cover one claim.
Ruth thanked everyone for their input and appreciated them serving
on her board. Her project is simply to share kindness. This is a very
open idea to whatever you want to do. A small act of kindness can
go a long way. She is looking forward to a great year and working
with us. The next executive board meeting will be held in Garden
City, August 25.

across the state and take ideas back to your District.
I am your Nominating Committee Chair this year. I, along with my Committee (Angie Fair-
banks, Pam McElvain, and Terri Clark) will be seeking new little Angels. This can be YOU!
Please let one of us know if you would be interested in serving in any capacity on the 2018-
2019 State Council. This will be the year of The Kaleidoscope of ESA, so bring on a “color” of
your choice and help light up the ESA spectrum. It really is an “Inspiring” place to be, as
Sandy Alexander, our newly elected IC President would say!
I hope to see YOU in Wichita for our Fall Meeting – The pink “Willing to Serve”, and “Intent

At this time we have 363 members who have paid their State dues and 28
Chapters that have paid. If you have not paid your State dues, please get it
in the mail as soon as possible.
I will be looking forward to seeing all who will be attending the MARC Conference in October
in Michigan and also will look forward to seeing everyone in November in Wichita at

Kindness from Kansas
Hello to all my Kansas ESA family! I am looking forward to seeing
you all in Wichita the beginning of November. How much fun will
that be? As you know membership is a “HOT” topic. We have to
work at increasing the membership. This organization gives one a
wonderful opportunity to learn leadership qualities, use the passion we
have to help others in our community….just to make a difference in
the world. I would hate to see ESA fade away due to lack of members.
I am asking EVERY ESA member to send me the name of someone you feel would enjoy
ESA. When I receive the name, the Membership committee will reach out to them. If that per-
son is in another state, I will reach out to the state President and work with them to make sure
they are contacted. Please just one name --- that will make a difference.
Also, I am asking ALL ESA members to take the pledge lessons that
are on the Kansas website. To find these lessons go to www.esaks.org.
Under the 5th tab which is “Join Us” use the drop down menu, the last
item of the drop down menu is “Pledge Lessons.” I think we all need
to go back to when we joined and remember what those vows mean to
us. The lesson of the pearls, oh the meaning those pearls hold; try to
capture those moments when you were learning about this organization
we joined. You can take these on line and submit them to the Web
Master (Verneene Forssberg), or print them off in PDF format, take
them, and mail them to Verneene. She will let me know who is taking
the lessons and when they are completed. I hope you will ALL join in
making ESA grow in Kansas this year ----- it will be happening!!!!
See you soon.

Happy Fall everyone! If you are needing some education ideas, please note that there are a lot
of great ideas out on the Kansas ESA website. When sending in your educational report form
you can download the form from the Kansas ESA website (http://www.esaks.org/

hattan, KS 66506 . The techno geek is working to get the form set up electronically again
(thanks Verneene), but in the meantime please send them to me. Thanks everyone!

Wings of Love Peggy Harrison, Workshop Coordinator
Kindness from Kansas
Hello, ESA! It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone and we
just finished our first State Council meeting. I had a wonderful, fun time in
Garden City, KS, and I hope all who attended did also.
When Ruth asked me to prepare at least one workshop on adoption, I
thought, OMG, this will take some serious thought. Well, it turns out, this
is one great topic. My tough job has been working long distance with peo-
ple in Garden City who are very busy, first and second, they have a seminar in Dodge City that
same day as the workshop. They are super caring people and have multiple services they pro-
vide to communities besides adoption. The organization I’m referring to is Catholic Charities
of Southwest Kansas. I’m amazed at their support to individuals and families. I’ve been work-
ing with Marci Smith, Director of Family Services in Garden City and Amy Falcon, Adoption
Coordinator in Dodge City, and our
own sisters, Mary Ann Johnson and
Janene Radke who helped me find the
Catholic Charities organization. I ex-
tend a huge thank you to Marci and
Amy for all they do for others and for
their help to me for the workshop.
I hope you all enjoyed the “Wings of
Love” workshop. I thought the speak-
ers were informative, educational, and
inspiring to say the least. Thank you
to Ruth Archambeau, our President,
for sharing her story of being an
adopted person in a closed adoption setting. Thank you to Roberto & Brianna Morales, for tell-
ing their story of the open adoptive process, and bringing little Julian, the answer to their pray-
ers, for us to meet. Whether being an adoptee & getting a loving life with adoptive parents, or
receiving a wonderful child to give a loving life to, I think we all can agree the end result is a
blessed gift from God, sent on “Wings of Love.”
Thank you for donating to the Catholic Charities Non Food Pantry, our “Sharing Kindness”
project from the weekend. Thank you also for filling out the gift-in-kind forms. A big thank
you goes to Georgia Grassi and her Care Connections Committee who graciously volunteered
and collected those items for me. Thank you to Mary Ann Johnson for being available to col-
lect the flyers and distributing the non-food items to Catholic Charities on Monday.
I look forward to seeing all of you in November at the workshop, Heroes Among Us. Travel
safely my sisters. See you soon!

Kindness from Kansas Sharing is Caring
By Karen Osborne, Kansas Care & Share Chair
The Kansas Care and Share Committee enjoyed our weekend in Garden City and the Teddy
Bear Picnic that was the entertainment for Saturday evening. We also had a raffle during the
weekend for several wonderful items with all of the money raised going to help share love to
someone in need.
We have received one claim and paid on it already this year.
As we move into Ruth’s year of Angels Among Us, your Kansas State Ways and Means com-
mittee looks forward to reaching our goal of continuing to make a difference to those in need.
We will be bringing back the popular 50/50 raffle and introducing new ideas that will offer all
our Kansas ESA sisters a way to participate.
Each of us is excited for the new year and hopeful that other surprises along the way will touch
your heart and encourage you to help share kindness. We are all angels in our own way and
together, we definitely make a difference.
We Are All Angels Cindee Leong, Ways & Means Chair
Angels that Care By Georgia Grassi, Care Connection Chair
Angels that Care. That is definitely the definition of every member of ESA. So all you Angels
out here, when you participate in Hats for Hope, Warm Welcome, Hope for Heroes, or any oth-
er person to person philanthropic service, don’t forget to complete the Care Connection philan-
thropic form which can now be found on our website. Some other activities could be Santa
America, Troopons for the Military and literacy programs.
I look forward to seeing how each of you shares your talents this year.
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

Sharing is the Art of Living Jill Richards Disaster Fund Chair & Junior Past President
Floods, earthquakes, fires, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions.... are these what you think of as dis-
asters? These are considered natural disasters, caused by Mother Nature. Maybe she is going
through menopause causing her to have hot flashes. What about a car wreck, heart attack,
stroke, or cancer? At times health issues can be considered a time of need, too.
The purpose of the Disaster Fund is to assist an ESA member whose home and or personal be-
longings are destroyed or damaged by one of these natural disasters. Assistance may also be
given when a member or one of their im-
mediate family members residing in the
household incurs heavy financial responsi-
bility due to a debilitating illness or injury.
The maximum amount of assistance given
to a member is $5,000.00. Those eligible
have to be an active member of 90 days or
more, Members at Large in good standing
with Headquarters, or Life Active mem-
bers. Eligibility will be determined by the IC Disaster Fund Chair in agreement with the IC
President and First Vice President/President Elect.
These funds are here for you in your time of need. We do need to replenish those funds so that
monies are available to those who might need them in the future. So, as you begin your 2017 -
2018 year ahead, start planning an event in your chapter to help make sure the monies are there.
Host a Bunko evening, maybe an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social, dinner and movie night at a
member’s home charging to attend the event. Tie the evening in with a Rush Party, explaining
about the Disaster Fund and how we show support to other members.
Thank you for your support in Garden City as we kicked off our year of "Living, Loving, Car-
ing Sharing..." for the Disaster Fund. Our ESA Kansas State goal for the year is $6,000.00.
We CAN do it!!

Consideration from IC
Well Kansas Members it is really happening. Who knew a few words of encouragement, some
years back, asking me to serve as International Council Junior Membership Chair would lead
me to today serving as your International Council 1st Vice President. Yes, my tummy quivers,
when I say those words out-loud or even in my head, but I am so excited to serve ESA and each
of you in this capacity. For me personally, ESA has given me opportunities, experiences,
friends and a chance to do good for others. By serving on the executive board I can work to
ensure that ESA continues to provide opportunities for future generations.
I would love to have fellow Kansas members who are able to attend the 2018 IC Convention be
involved in my installation July 21, 2018 in Phoenix, AZ. Yes, it’s hot outside, but cool inside
the Sheraton Grand Hotel. More information about the honor guard will be available down the
road. The convention dates are July 18-21, 2018.
The 2019 IC Convention will be held in Memphis, TN. Yes, there will be tours of THE hospi-
tal throughout the week. Again, I am sharing this information ahead of time so you can begin
saving money and making plans. The convention dates are July 17-20, 2019.
I am thrilled Maureen Wells is serving with me as Corresponding Secretary. Our friendship
goes back to…, well it goes way back to my collegiate days, and I am so thankful she said
YES! Pat Josey, Cindee Leong, Brenda Schaffer and Judy Ahrens will be wonderful support to
us as the appointed administrative assistants. It’s good to surround yourself with people who
can make you look good – I have done that well!
I want to say thank you to the Kansas membership for your encouragement throughout this
journey. I am humbled and appreciative of the support, not only financial from the council, but
from each of you with your words of encouragement, sharing ideas with me, brainstorming and
that all important smile. I know that I have the support of each of you and if I need anything I
can ask. I just may!

IC Convention Summary and Awards by Jill Richards, Junior Past President
Consideration from IC
The meeting in St Louis has come and gone as we gathered to celebrate our MAD year of
Dreaming Big in ESA with Sherry Day. If you didn’t make it, you missed out on an awesome
time!!
Some were able to go early enough to venture to Camp Hope on Sunday, a place dedicated to
honoring the fallen by helping the wounded. Others arrived throughout the week to enjoy the
fun sites in St Louis and shop, dine out, and enjoy sharing with our sisters and brothers from
around the world.
LeAnn Wray began the week with fun, educational, and heartwarming workshops. On
Wednesday we were able to "Explore Union Station" with our own private tour guide, learn
about "The Real CSI" as two ladies from the St Louis Police Department shared with us, and
then the IC Membership Directors, Malinda Remington and Jennifer May-Dennis, along with
Tracy Swanson, conducted the Membership Workshop, "Share the Friendship."
WOW!! is all that can be said about the Wednesday night wel-
come dinner, "All Aboard... the Journey Begins." The theme
was USO so several of us dressed up to honor those who have
served, or still are serving. We were blessed to have an awesome
group, The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America Roots
in Blue. I think some of us could have danced all night. Right,
Joan Bourn?!?!
Thursday morning began with the inspirational flag ceremony
not only honoring the United States of America, but Canada and
Australia, too. Our State President, Ruth, represented our great
state as she proudly carried in the Kansas flag. After the busi-
ness of the morning was taken care of, we were blessed with an-
other wonderful workshop as Tom Krause, author of the “Volunteer's Creed” and twenty time
contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, spoke. Mr. Krause shared with us that peo-
ple count, people matter, but more importantly you count, you matter. That the definition of
worth is IALAC - I am loveable and capable. Following lunch we gathered for the Hope for
Heroes Workshop with Jaycee Peak, Chairman. That evening found several of us gathering to
rack our brains for Trivia Night. Oh my, that was exhausting!! Afterwards we gathered to cel-
ebrate with Kim Kummer, the new IC 1st Vice President. We are all so very proud of her and
all she is going to continue doing in ESA and beyond.
Really early Friday morning, maybe because the night before was so late, we gathered to take
care of more business. Several from Kansas received their Years of Service awards throughout (Continued on page 15)

Friday evening several attended the St. Jude IC Challenge. Several
others ventured out for a fun evening together, dining at the Cardi-

Saturday morning we gathered to honor those who are gone, but
not forgotten during the Celebration of Life ceremony. Following
that was the last General Assembly with closing remarks from
Sherry Day. We then attended the MARC Regional Council Meet-
ing, followed by two workshops, "Who Do You Think You Are"
and "Bling Bling". Finally the Grand Finale, the installation of our
new IC Officers including our own Kim Kummer, the 2017-2018
International Council First Vice. The evening was then capped
off with the best celebration of all – the parade of dollars for St.
Jude. Cindee Leong proudly represented Kansas, celebrating our
amount raised of $559,626.00 this past year! The grand total for
2016-2017 was $19,485,427.00. This brings our ESA Lifetime
amount to $246,331,387.00. Not too shabby!! Those of us who
met in St Louis had a great time celebrating our MAD year in

Pack your bags and let’s all meet in Detroit for the upcoming
MARC conference October 13-14, 2017. The Michigan State
Council is planning a fun and informative weekend. Kansas State
Council has two members running for office. Linda Schmidt is
running for Secretary and Bonnie Templeton is running for Treas-

Friday Night Foundation Fundraiser will be a Dance Contest.
Guess who will be representing Kansas? We will be passing a
basket around at the State Council Meeting in Garden City for con-
tributions. The most pennies donated will determine the winner.
There will also be an auction of purses. Mary Hill has graciously
donated a purse that we will fill with cash and gift cards. If you
are unable to attend the summer meeting in Garden City and would
like to donate, please send cash and/or gift cards to Ruth Archam-

Alpha Omega members are
having a summer break for
the most part.
We did prepare and serve
dinner for approximately
300 at the Texas 4-Ball Golf

members eating outside after
we finished serving the golf
teams.
CHI EPSILON—Wichita Submitted by Roberta Bailey & Kim Powell
We are off to a good start with our yearly planning meeting held at President Linda Whitfill's
home on May 23rd. On June 26th, Chi Epsilon was hostess chapter for the District D salad sup-
per held at Reflection Ridge Clubhouse. WOW...good food and good ESA friendship.
Cyndie Ewy and Terri Clark said they had a wonderful time at the International Council Con-
vention, July 16 - 22, in St. Louis, Mo.
On July 20th, Margaret Shook, Linda Whitfill and Roberta Bailey baked 14 doz. cookies for the
kids at Rainbows Camp Woodchuck. On August 8th, we had our peach delivery day as this was
our summer fundraiser and it was a huge success. Thanks to Margaret Shook, Jody Hartkopp,
Carol Rohloff, Cheryl Krob and all our Chi Epsilon sisters for a job well done.
Now we are looking forward to our Secret Sister Birthday Bash to be held August 22, 2017 at
the home of Carol Spurgeon. Our Social Chairman Sheri Robson is planning a nice dinner.

Compassion from Chapters DELTA EPSILON—Rose Hill
Submitted by Helen Stitt
Philanthropic, Rush and Social committee members met at the home of Karen Diltz for a joint
coordination meeting for the 2017-2018 sorority year. The chapter often combines philanthrop-
ic projects with our socials and rush activities. We will be “Cruising” during rush with the final
destination being Hawaii and a luau. Passports will be handed out and stamped at the different
events.
We will be selling poinsettias again this year, so please let a Delta Epsilon member know if you
would like to purchase some for the holiday season. We look forward to the holidays with our
annual Christmas party at the home of Cindy Rodman.

The Gamma Omicron Chapter celebrated their annual Founder’s Day with a dinner at the Holi-

during the State Convention. Judy recognized DeAdre Strouts and Claire Beck for five years of
service, Linda Bottom for 40 years of service, Shirley Campbell for 45 years of service and
Donna Dawson and Kathy Crowl for 50 years of service. Carolyn Myers received her 1st De-
gree Pallas Athene and Sherry Brown received her 2nd Degree Pallas Athene.
Donna Dawson led the installation ceremony “Sew’n Seeds in ESA" for the 2017-2018 offic-
ers. New Officers are Sherry Brown as President, Carolyn Myers as Vice-President, Debbie
Smith as Secretary, DeAdre Strouts as Treasurer and Jean Bramwell as Educational Director.
Virginia Bigbee lowered Judy’s gavel and Angie Fairbanks raised Sherry’s gavel for the up-
coming year. Sherry Brown gave her President’s remarks before the Secret Sister exchange
ended the celebration.
The chapter presented a gift to Judy Ahrens for doing a great job as our president this past year.
The President’s Party was held at Throwback Tavern on June 20th.
ZETA EPSILON—Overland Park Submitted by Pam Mitchell & Becky Cosgrove
How exciting at IC in St. Louis….we had five
members attending their first IC. Our chapter also
faired very well and placed third at Trivia night.
However, the best thing that happened was we
had a pledge join in June and attend IC in July.
On Friday morning, IC President Sherry Day,
changed her agenda and called to the stage Melis-
sa Diddle and her sponsor Amanda Johnson and
performed Melissa’s pledge ceremony. A first ev-
er! Welcome Melissa and thank you Amanda!
