Preparing for the High Holidays By Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky

We know that we need to prepare for special occasions in life. Could a test, a wedding, or a ob interview go well without being prepared Although spontaneity and freshness are surely welcomed, most of us will accept that it is better to be pre-pared for important events. An ap-propriate preparation allows us to be ready for the occasion and also to en oy it in the best possible way. Regarding the High Holidays, we will easily agree that they demand prep-aration. After all, we need to invite guests or plan a trip to visit the fam-ily, cook many meals, and clean the house There is so much to do be-fore the High Holidays Jewish tradition certainly encour-ages us to en oy the holidays with good food and company, so prepar-ing for this is surely a good idea. However, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are also filled with profound religious and existential meaning. Judgment and pardon, repentance and forgiveness, life and destiny are all topics that shape the great holi-days at the beginning of the year. Therefore, it is no surprise that in order to be spiritually and intellec-tually ready for the amim o aim, the Jewish tradition establishes a period of time dedicated to proper-ly prepare for them. The whole He-brew month of Elul is devoted to this goal. This year the month of Elul begins on August 11th.

t is a time for introspection and self-examination. That is why this month is also known as the month of repent-ance, the month of mercy and the month of forgiveness. The great Ma-haral of Prague Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, who lived in the sixteenth century in Poland, Moravia and Pra-gue, and is considered one of the most important scholars and rabbis of all times said about this month, All the month of Elul, before eating and sleeping, a person should look into his soul and search his deeds, that he may make confession. The most im-portant thing we can do during the month of Elul is to think about our actions during the past year, repent, and ask for forgiveness to the people in our lives and to God. According to the rabbis, the letters of Elul form an acronym for the words i l o i o i li– am my be-loved’s and my beloved is mine Song of Songs 6:3 . f we accept the tradi-tional interpretation of beloved as referring to God, then the verse is describing the close relationship be-tween God and srael, which is partic-ularly highlighted during the High Hol-idays. Elul, then, is our time to strengthen this close relationship so we can approach the amim o aim not only with fear of God’s udgment, but also with love. Many traditions help us to properly prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur during the month of Elul. Here are some of them:

Shofar: Every day of the month after the morning ser-vice, the shofar is blown except on Shabbat and the eve of Rosh Hashanah . The sound of the shofar awakens our souls and encourages us to think about our actions during the year. You are more than invited to oin us on Sun-

day mornings for the min-yan and listen to the sound of the shofar beginning on August 12th .

Slichot: Beginning on Sat-

urday night before Rosh Hashanah, we recite Slichot , which are a spe-cial series of penitential poems and prayers that invoke God s mercy. f Rosh Hashanah falls at the begin-ning of the week, then Slichot begins on the Sat-urday night of the previous week. Sefardim begin say-ing Slichot on Rosh Cho-desh Elul . This year, we will start Slichot at Temple Beth El on Saturday, September 1st in the evening.

Psalm 27: We recite this

psalm at the conclusion of the Morning Service and also at the end of the Even-ing Service, from the first of Elul to Hoshana Rabbah. Psalm 27 speaks about the themes of the season. We can learn this from Midrash Tehilim 27:4: God is my light—on Rosh Hashanah—and my salvation—on Yom Kippur. Whom then shall fear—on Hoshana Rab-bah

loved ones: Some people do this the day before Rosh Hashanah, but many go at any moment from the be-ginning of the month of Elul to Yom Kippur. At Temple Beth El we will hold a con-gregational visit to our cemetery on Sunday, Sep-tember 2nd at 2 pm. We will start with some shared

prayers, and afterwards everybody will be given time to visit their family members’ graves.

Sending ar sei racha

lessi g le ers : Many people send ew Year’s cards to family and friends, wishing them good things for the new year that is about to begin. We wish others that they be in-scribed in the Book of Life for the year to come, and in general we wish blessings for the new year. Of course, today many of us send - a i B a a

ncreasing charity: We

make charitable contribu-tions in anticipation of the High Holy Days. Although giving tz aka is a mitzvah all year round, there is something especially beau-tiful about making a special effort around the Yamim oraim. Giving extra charity emphasizes that self-inspection must lead to outward improvement.

hope you can spiritually pre-pare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The customs de-scribed here, plus an internal evaluation of our lives during the past year, including repent-ance and asking for forgiveness, will help us enormously to be ready for the High Holidays. And being ready for them is the key to en oy them to the fullest. Have a good preparation

PRINCIPALS’ MESSAGE WE D D T AGA N! 2018 MEAL AT

F RST REFORMED CHURCH

We did it again At the same time am making a request for a person or people to work with me organizing and working this Mitzvah. The outline is in place, so are the menus, shop-ping & obs listed and recipe how to.

Hello all congregants. Twenty-five congregants and friends contributed to make the meal a success. There were 4 youngsters included in this number all of whom were very hard workers. Thank you all for the roles that you played To prepare for the Tuesday dinner many of you donated food, gelt, and gave time in the kitch-en at TBE and First Reformed Church. Three hours of time given by one member to help with transportation, shopping, and schlepping the day of were invaluable. Thanks to the Food Festival for the donation of the re-maining beverages and pickles.

A surprise donation of two gross 288 of hard cooked eggs in dry packs was made by Sauder’s Eggs in Ephrata The company made it very easy to apply for a donation after called to ask about purchasing them. This company values community out-reach and really cares. Big Thank You goes out to them.

We served 147 individuals, including 5 little ones, 180 meals were served as seconds were offered after every-one present had their first plates.

There were smiles and thanks given to our volunteers who provided peo-ple power on Tuesday. These acts of kindness were performed with open hearts and appreciated by all who were served.

Great ob everyone On behalf of Social Action. Sue Wolf 393-7283 [email protected] PS-next meal-December 25th yes, it is Christmas, still a community meal We will need many hands to serve

FOOD FESTIVAL UPDATE

Temple Beth El’s 15th annual Food Festival was held on May 6

th this year, and it was an overwhelm-

ing success. Thank you to the many hard-working volunteers and members who attended meetings late into the night, schlepped, baked and cooked, solicited ads, etc. since well before the beginning of the year, even on Sundays. Congratulations to our wonderful, dedicated committee members: Dave Ehrlich, Sue Friedman, Joan Goldman, Steve Gordon, Linda Hutt, Randi Jacobs, Steve Jacobs, Carolyn Kleinman, Francine Koplin, Michele Matlin, Earl Stein, and Sue Wolf. Here are some of the latest statistics:

After the final tally of income and expenses, I’m pleased to announce our RECORD-BREAKING profit is up to $20,200 and will hopefully keep rising as our food leftovers continue to sell.

We had record number of attendees on the day of the event and outstanding support within the community for our Ad Book.

Roughly 97% of the congregation supported the Food Festival through the purchase and sell-ing of tickets…

Our top ticket sellers were: Dolly Shuster, Susan Friedman, Donna & Bob Brosbe, Linda Hutt and Abbey Harris.

We had a total of 90 congregants and non-members who volunteered for this year’s event. If not for this $20,000+ fundraiser, the Sustaining Level for our Financial Commitment would

increase by approximately $125 per adult. Please, do not let this important fundraiser die. Join the committee, sell ads for our ad book, help with the baking or cooking, and just step up and volunteer where needed. There is no job that’s too small.
