many of you remember First Baptist church in 1984. it was a big year for our church. We celebrated our 175th Anniversary and published a church history book for the occasion. in addition, we began our wonderful tradition of the Living christmas tree which is still going strong today as a gift to our community. our wonderful First Baptist orchestra that continues to grow and touch our hearts with beautiful music was begun the same year. there is
another tradition that began in 1984. First Baptist church on governors drive began to worship together with First missionary Baptist church on Blue Spring road.
The first meeting took place in our Sanctuary and was held on the last Sunday of February. it was race relations Sunday, and dr. Julius Scruggs preached and the choir from First missionary Baptist sang. Later, dr. Langley preached and our choir sang as we went to worship in their building. A wonderful tradition was born and continues to this day.
Sunday night you have the opportunity to take part in this wonderful worship experience as we mark the 30th Anniversary of this significant partnership. We will worship at First missionary Baptist beginning at 6:30 p.m. i will preach as i usually do when we go to their building. our Sanctuary choir and orchestra will be leading us in worship with beautiful music. the orchestra will play for about ten to fifteen minutes before worship begins. Worship will be followed by a rich time of fellowship for all.
i hope that you will be able to join us for this special worship service on Sunday night. Let me leave you with the wonderful words that ralph Langley wrote in The Messenger the week before the first worship service in 1984. I have quoted them before, but you need to read them again.
We should all be all-blessed-up by this cordial exchange. i hope you will help us by your prayers/participation/ and particularly your good WiLL. please be supportive and encouraging. And o you will be blessed! that’s a promise.
Well said, ralph! you were exactly right. We have had thirty years of blessings. i invite you to experience the blessing this Sunday night.
