My first full year as your edi-
tor is coming to an end and I
must admit that I had no idea
just what I was taking on
when I agreed to become the
producer of our little magazine.
It is with heartfelt thanks that
I give my daughter Brooke
Hilton, for her expertise, in
putting this little mag into some
semblance of professionalism.
Thanks also must go to my
husband John Ferguson for
allowing me to use our
professional copier and at the
cost to our office, not our little
society, to get the production
done and dusted through
LJ HOOKER PICTON.
It has been a steep learning
curve, but at the same time a
very rewarding one, when I see
what has been produced. I can
only hope that you as the
reader is as happy with the
new look Felis and its content.
Once again though I am on the
call for anyone who would like
to contribute to our Magazine,
to please do so and to forward
any photos, stories, poems or
anecdotes you may seem fit.
Or you will only be hearing
from “moi” and I am really
quite boring, so please be
brave and send in something
that we can use.
So come on everyone, give me
something to put in the next
edition, so you won’t have to
only look at my cattery and
hear my stories!!!!
May I now take this
opportunity in wishing
everyone a VERY HAPPY
CHRISTMAS AND A SAFE AND
HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

Oh how quickly this year is rushing by!! It won’t be too long before 2015 is history and 2016 brings us ever closer to our 59th All Breeds Show on February 27th at the Picton Shire Hall. Our two All Breeds judges will be Lesley Freeman, President of GCCFV and Joan Henderson, a long time All Breeds judge also from GCCFV. They will be joined by the most recent Cats NSW judge Hazel Rossiter who many members will remember as a NSW CFA exhibitor and judge who in recent years has been with the ANCATS association.
Hazel will judge the special awards classes, Joyce Selby Memorial (Best “Pure” Siamese) and LJ Hooker Picton (Best “Pure” Siamese bred by Exhibitor as well as Supreme Companion and the Pet Rescue event.
The show season will have reached its conclusion in each registering body in NSW and for most around Australia by the time this issue is distributed. Our members continue to promote our breed and reach the heights of Cat of the Year success as well as showing off those wonderful attributes that we all know are possessed by the Siamese that we breed.
In very recent years a new disease PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) has been identified in our Siamese breed which needs each and everyone of us to not only be aware but to manage out of our breeding lines.
Simple, effective DNA testing is available to identify this disease so there is no reason why we cannot work together to combat its intrusion. Please read my article in latter pages of this issue.
Our AGM date will be announced shortly & I encourage you if at all possible to attend and to also nominate yourself to be on our SCS Committee. It is true that many hands make light work & we could well do with some more hands.
Finally I must thank my fellow committee members for their work this year and for the support they have given me as your SCS President.
May each of you have a Very Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year with family, friends and furries and I look forward to any and all things Siamese that come along in 2016.
Bye for Now

Pepe is an adorable Chocolate Point purebred
Siamese now aged one year. He and I got together
when he was a baby in August 2014 at ‘Fullcircle
Siamese’ cattery. I was first captured by his sweet
face and lovely eyes, but soon his loving, playful per-
sonality came to the fore as the weeks of “kitten-
hood” went by before I could take him home. Over
the next few months we shared lots of fun, cuddles
and ‘school’ times as he learnt house rules (you know
how well cats follow these!). Not sure which of us
was the pupil! But he learnt to lead within six days
and before long I was able to take him on short walks
along bush tracks near my home
which he seemed to enjoy, as long
as no dogs were around. He is
strong-willed, super healthy and
absolutely devoted to his human
Mum. Needs to know where I am
at all times of the day, and I score
extra points if I’m ready to drop
everything and play! But it’s really
Pepe’s story, so I’ll let him contin-
ue.... “it’s fun retrieving my favour-
ite soft toy Mum made me – I keep
her busy by bringing it back to her
to throw for me again. Then
there’s always the game of ‘lose my favourite toy’ so
Mum has to go look for it under the bed, cabinet,
fridge, lounge, laundry etc. Of course I help and fol-
low her around while she crawls around with lots of
suggestion. Boy I get a plenty of fun mileage out of
that one! Speaking of the laundry, I love hiding a pipe
cleaner in the washing machine – jumping in to find it
is such fun, and so far I’ve managed to get it before
Mum turns the machine on! Then there’s finding and
claiming the highest points in the house – one of my
favourite games. Especially good if I keep really quiet
while Mum is calling me and looking all over the
house, and I’ve fooled her by hiding in my latest new
perch on top of the bookcase! Love her reaction
when she eventually finds me grinning down at her!
If only I could speak English, I’d say ‘sucked in’! Water
running out of taps has always fascinated me – tastes
good and twinkles as it runs! Then there’s the bath –
have had great times racing around it playing golf
with a ping pong ball – the idea is to score goals in
the plug hole. It can be a bit of a pain when she’s
working on the computer and I need attention, so
some tricks I’ve learned are to walk in front of the
keyboard and stand right in front of the screen look-
ing innocent and beautiful, but if that doesn’t work, I
bring my favourite toy in and try to push it down the
hole behind the screen where all the power cords go
– this invariably causes the desired
reaction, especially if I play with the
modem! When I do get her atten-
tion, she often takes me bushwalk-
ing, which is pretty good. I get to
go for a short drive, then walk
along bush tracks where I can climb
on logs and take in all the smells of
dogs and cats along the way. It’s
fun watching birds, although Mum
would never get me get near them.
Night times are five star really, as I
get to sleep under the bedclothes
right against her tummy – never
need a hot water bottle! I get all I need to eat, but
sometimes I like to get a taste of what Mum has for
dinner and I find by being on my most polite behav-
iour, sitting patiently until she’s had her fill, I usually
get a titbit or two at the end (see, I can be good
when I need to). My next trick will be to work on her
until I get more! All in all I’m pretty lucky really, but
sometimes I wish I had a companion when Mum has
to go out, Maybe that will happen one day...
“And yes Pepe, it will”. I am soon to bring home a
little blue-point girl named Marli, so I really hope you
two can become great friends. I’ll certainly be in for
some fun and games when you two get wound up,
won’t I?! And readers, don’t take all of what Pepe
says as gospel – I’m really the boss (I think...)!

SPECIAL REPORT By Tony Hurry, President, Siamese Cat Society of N.S.W. Inc.
Our most recent challenge as breeders of Siamese is now with us in the form of a retinal disease known as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). Thankfully, due to some sharing of information and results, along with a desire to breed it out with the use of DNA testing this challenge has a good chance of success…at least for those who choose not to remain ignorant of it.
Personally speaking, we at Kalinya Siamese had not thought to be involved with this disease when it first became a discussion point around two years ago and remained oblivious to characteristics of the disease and its genetic invasion in to our Siamese. Thankfully a recent approach to purchase a kitten for stud from us by a registered Australian breeder has identified to us that PRA is in our lines. The kitten in ques-tion following DNA testing was found to be AFFECTED/POSITIVE – 2 Copies. Subsequently, the deci-sion was agreed not to proceed with sale as stud. He is now living with our friends who are already owned by our Kalinya Siamese so that we can watch and learn of any effects of him being Affected.
We then took the decision to DNA test each of our five breeding cats and one former breeding cat for PRA. The following results amazed and obviously alerted us to each cats PRA status and therefore as to how we could go about managing our breeding programme.
J’Magz OUTBACK of Myrlyn (imp USA) (M) Carrier/Heterozygous – one copy detected
Christernee MILLA (F) Normal/Clear
Kalinya OD DELLINA (F) Carrier/Heterozygous – one copy detected (Outback daughter)
Elizabethcat South YUMI-of-Kalinya (imp Japan) (M) Affected/Positive – two copies
Kalinya OM JAZZI (F) Normal/Clear (Outback daughter)
These results, in consideration of not reducing our gene pool, will find us not desexing our carriers or even Yumi who is Affected/Positive BUT we will selectively breed, therefore not mating carrier to affected and only allowing normal/clear females to be mated with him.
As you will read in documents that I have included with this article, it is quite early days in establishing proper sample data to support to what extent PRA carriers & PRA affected kittens and cats show signs or evidence of blindness. In our decades of breeding Siamese we have only found one cat with blindness. In fact he was our daughters, a Kalinya seal point neuter who at eight years of age lost sight. He lived until 12-1/2 years of age with this condition and with a sighted litter brother, healthy and happy. Was this due to PRA or was it a coincidence with loss of sight due to another cause? We will never know as he passed away prior to us having any awareness of PRA & that DNA testing was available. Other breed-ers with whom I have spoken also indicate the rarity of blindness however it is a disease and we are each encouraged to be aware and to manage it accordingly.
After all, as breeders we are bound by each of our Associations Objects and our Code of Ethics which primarily is to breed to improve.
DO NOT PANIC!!! This is manageable and even more so if we can all work together!!

SPECIAL REPORT cont.
DNA Testing for PRA Importantly there is now a DNA test for the rdAc mutation which is thought to be the most com-mon cause of PRA. The presence of both sets of the recessive gene, indicate the cat will suffer from progressive retinal atrophy and ultimately blindness.
Is PRA in Siamese Cats Something New?
No PRA is not something new, what is new is an increased awareness and availability of DNA testing. People will probably think Siamese and Oriental cats never went blind in the past so what has changed?
Well maybe this is true or perhaps the cats that were PRA positive gradually did go blind. Due the gradual nature of the progression of the disease perhaps these cats adapted relying more so on their other senses.
It seems possible that PRA has not been diagnosed because the cats have not shown symptoms until they are older. Vets may have dismissed it as age related deterioration.
Could it be that blindness has been noticed and not reported to breeders? Or worse it has been reported and ignored?
I could offer a variety of other theories; but that is exactly what they would be – theories.
The responsible thing to do at this stage is to start to collate some real data. To gather this data we must start by DNA testing our cats. Gathering data on the PRA status of cats and also data on how many cats are actually going blind (or indeed not going blind) are both essential to enable informed choices regarding potential registration policy changes.
On a personal note I must admit I am not totally convinced that we have a massive problem at this stage. What I am sure about though is without more research we will never know if we have a problem. As things stand today I am not in favour of any registration policy changes – we do not have enough evidence one way or the other!
There have been cats diagnosed with PRA in this country. The cats in question tested positive for two sets of the rdAc mutated gene which is the gene thought to cause progressive retinal atrophy.
Below is a screen shot of the results for various gene tests performed at Langford which include the Sia-mese and Oriental cats tested for PRA and their results. Although the results are interesting, at this stage it would be very unwise to make any conclusions based on this data. There is simply not enough information to make any decisions with one exception. We need to test more cats!

PRA in Siamese cats is a topic I have written about briefly before. After publishing the first article I was contacted by people in the UK who have Siamese cats affected by PRA. For this reason I decid-ed to write another article with further information and also some suggested guidelines on responsi-ble breeding. Please read on to see how breeding cats that are PRA positive can easily be avoided by DNA testing and selective breeding. For clarity – PRA is equally an issue for Siamese, Orientals, Balinese and Oriental Longhairs.
What is PRA Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA as it usually referred to is a disease of the retina which ultimately causes blindness. The disease is known to be present in Abyssinians, Somali and has been widely reported to be present in Siamese and Oriental cats. The retina contains cells called photoreceptors which absorb the light focused on them by the eye lenses and converts them into electric signals which are passed through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain interprets these signals where they are perceived as vision. When a cat has PRA the photoreceptors degenerate over time and ultimately cause blindness. Typi-cally the sight in affected cats gradually gets worse with total blindness around 4 to 5 years, though there are reports of total blindness not being diagnosed until much later.
Ophthalmoscopic Testing for PRA Testing a cat suffering from progressive retinal atrophy can be conducted by your vet where eye drops are administered to make the pupils dilate to enable observations and diagnosis of the disease.

SPECIAL REPORT cont.
Possible Recommendations It would seem more than sensible to utilise the available DNA test for PRA.
Testing our cats will help us understand the extent of the spread of the gene.
It will also help prove or disprove the theory that all PRA positive cats will eventually be totally blind.
By knowing the PRA status of our cats we can selectively breed away from this gene and prevent any chance of cats being born PRA positive.
Testing is available here –

Members of clubs registered with Langford can get a discount on DNA tests by obtaining voucher codes through their club.
Responsible Breeding and PRA The rdAc mutation is a recessive gene that is thought to cause total blindness in cats when present twice in a cats DNA (homozygous for the rdAc mutation). Cat breeders work with recessive genes every day and when you can test for the gene it really is simple to avoid breeding cats that are homo-zygous for the rdAc mutation.
The problem is if you try to breed the gene out completely too quickly you will severely limit the gene pool dependant on how wide spread the rdAc mutation is.
Suggested Guidelines As the gene has to be present twice and because of the available DNA test we can selectively breed cats that have zero chance of being homozygous for the rdAc mutation.
This would mean that any cats bred following these suggested guidelines below would have zero chance of becoming blind through progressive retinal atrophy caused by the rdAc mutation.
1. Only cats with known rdAc status should be used for breeding.
2. Carriers should only be mated to negative cats.
3. Positive cats (with both rdAc genes defective) should only be used for breeding with cats that are negative status
It could be argued that positive cats should not be used for breeding at all. A positive cat is always go-ing to pass on one of the mutated rdAc genes. However a positive cat mated to a negative cat will re-sult in all kittens being carrier status only. Until we know more about how widespread the gene is we do not know if the gene pool is capable of excluding all positive cats from breeding problems.
The Way Forward We need to start testing our cats and collating the results on how wide spread the mutated gene is. We need to have far more data on how many PRA positive cats are actually going blind. Until we have this data then we cannot make an informed decision. At this stage it would seem to be the only re-sponsible course of action to start testing cats and not breeding PRA positive cats.
Any data collated by the Siamese Cat Breeder website will be used to help build a database and will remain confidential.

My husband, James and I just came home from our little walk with FIVE cats in tow. Yes, you heard correctly they walk with us and always at night to avoid dogs. We have lived in our current house for twelve years and moved in with two Siamese kittens, Koko and Yum Yum (by no means our first Siamese cats but maybe I will get a chance to write about the others at a later time).
Let me introduce you to our current horde of cats. Let’s start with the oldest, Calvin who is the only not Siamese but since he grew up with them he behaves just like one. He talks a lot. I hold whole conversations with him as I do with all our Siamese.
The next one in the line is Choey who was born in our house and owns every-thing. He is loved to death by Hannah our youngest. He is so good-
natured that she can do absolutely anything with and to him. Now in March 2013 we lost Choey’s brother Chucky and maybe because we treat our cats like people we see ourselves in them. Anyway Choey was really lost. He missed his brother terribly. This is where we started to think of adopting a Siamese that was in need of a home for life. And as always the universe provides when everything is right.
Rosie a seven year old seal-point came into all our lives in November 2013. After about three weeks in our bed room and more less kept apart from Calvin and Choey so she could get used to the two legged family members first we started to let Choey in and as he is such a lovely cat and never knew anything else but love he was happy to share us with Rosie. She also helped him immensely to get his spirits up. I know it sounds as if we talk about our cat as human but that’s exactly what they are for us and they just know when one of us needs a cuddle. When she first came we were told that she was a
complete indoor cat and in one of our first in depth conversations she and I had, I told her that if she settled right in she’d be able to go anywhere (outside) she liked. All our cats are in and outdoor cats with a cat door that was particularly installed in a glass pane when we moved in twelve years ago.
Fast forward to November 2014. I left my name with the Siamese Cat Society NSW, to indicate my willing-ness to adopt another cat if it needs a good home. An email landed in my inbox from Tony Hurry that two blue-point brothers, Ziggy and Sonny Dee (we renamed him from Honey Bee) are in dire need of a new home.
After a short consultation with all the family members I
rung straight away to let him know that they are most
welcome at our place. The excitement before their
arrival was incredible. Just to demonstrate that a lot of
things move in circles: Exactly twelve years to the
month prior to their arrival we rescued another pair of
this time seal-point Siamese, Rajah and Mikey (very
sadly they went to the big kitty litter in the sky a while
ago). This synchronicity left us all a bit speechless.
Once again we did not anticipate any difficulty in
integrating the ‘Blues Brothers’ as we affectionately
call them and there was none. I would have liked to call
them Jake and Elwood but this was to different from
their original names so we think of Ziggy Stardust and
Sonny Bill Williams.
What a
enriched life we
all had because
of all our cats
presence I
cannot
emphasise
enough and
while I am
typing here over the head of our much loved Choey I
can only conclude that a house is not a home without a
Siamese and an honorary Siamese (Calvin) cat.

Life and Trials of the
Siamese Cat Society
Trailer.
By Sharryn Hilton
Built especially for the Society way
back in 1982 with extra care to ensure
it was not susceptible to rust. It has
been a loyal assistant.
It has been housed with various
members of the committee over the
years, to try to keep it in good order
and safe from vandalism. It’s been
under cover and out in the open and
everywhere in between. It’s resided
in lots of different places by the
kindness of a few committee
members, in the past.
Registration and tyres were the usual
repair bills over the years, so it was
understandable when upon its trip to
its latest safe haven, things seemed
apparent that would now need to be
done. Unfortunately, not just the
tyres and registration this time.
A list of problems were noted which
stopped the trusty trailer from being
registered and permission was
sought through the committee to
have these repairs done. Such things
like bushes, shackle bolts, brackets,
brakes, lights, 4 new tyres, and the
list went on. The only things that
couldn’t get done, were the drums
for the brakes, they are not available
as a market purchase but the
mechanic is still on the hunt for them
and hopefully we will be able to get
them in the future, as needed.
It was unanimous that we wanted to
retain the trailer and therefore take
on the repairs as necessary.
The vote was cast and all said yes.
Fingers were crossed that it wasn’t
going to exceed a limit which we set.
The trailer spent many weeks at the
mechanics because certain parts for
the trailer were unobtainable in
today’s market and things had to
actually be made to fit to suit the
uniqueness of our little trailer. The
builder of the Trailer was no longer
in business.
The committee members were
getting nervous when each of the
things were spoken about and the
dollar signs sounded loudly in our
heads.
As time went on and the trailer was
still not repaired the bill was
imagined to be a huge one.
But…Our sincere thanks as a group,
must go to SCS Vice President John
Ferguson, who was able to pull a few
favours from a mechanic friend to get
some of these major repairs done to
enable us to retain our trailer for
years to come.
When the bill finally came in, it was
with a huge sigh of relief that it was
nothing in cost that was anticipated.
The mechanic had not charged for so
many things it was almost
embarrassing, but said he was happy
to help out our little band of
volunteers…. So thanks must also go
to Lou Amato, who owns AUTOPLUS
PICTON. Without his kindness and
John’s sweet talking it would have
been a much larger bill for our trailer.
The bill including 4 new tyres was a
grand total of $890.00. (A minor sum
considering it is the first maintenance
done in 33 years!)
It was then able to pass registration
and resume the task of serving the
SCS. A total win for us all, now
hopefully it will do us all for a few
more years to come!!

NOTICE TO MEMBERS
At its 2015 February General Meeting discussion was held regarding
the current fee structure. As a review of costs had not taken place
with a subsequent increase for some years, and due to rising costs of providing
FELIS, increased postage rates and managing and maintaining our
SCS website service, it was agreed that fees needed to be increased.
A motion to that effect was proposed and seconded and carried unanimously.
———————————————————————————————————
Our Fees for 2016 are therefore as follow :
Full Member: $21.00 Advertisement - Full Page $33.00
Joint Member: $35.00 Advertisement - Half Page $18.00
Associate. Member: $14.00 Advertisement - Quarter Page $12.00
Website Kitten Listing $15.00 Siamese Cats at Stud List - Free
FELIS - Free to members FELIS, Back Copy - $5.00
or Free via electronic Copy
——————————————————————————————————-
At our 31st October 2015 Committee meeting it was agreed unanimously
to introduce a new category of member being :
Introductory Member: 50% of Full Member /Joint Member Fee
for initial year’s membership.
ONLY for those Siamese owners introduced by a current financial member.
This is to further encourage breeders when selling their kittens to entice the
new owners in to becoming members. There are some of our breeders who are
paying this fee being inclusive in their selling price.
