Photo / Jeffrey Holmes Based on data from the national Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), which measures knowledge and skills in academic subject areas among a national sample of students, the graph illustrates the wide disparity between achievement expectations at schools in affluent districts compared to those in high poverty districts, which include a disproportionate number of students of color. As the chart shows, “A” students in affluent schools scored at the 87th percentile on the CTBS 7th Grade Math exam. By contrast, “A” students attending high poverty schools scored at only the 35th percentile on the same test. As disturbing, students who earn a “C” in affluent schools score at the 41st percentile on the test, still outperforming “A” students from high poverty schools. This disparity continues in high school – students in poor districts who believe they are obtaining top grades lack the academic preparation to matriculate and succeed at a top college. Because academic preparation is by far the number one determinant that drives college entrance and graduation, last fall the SEO Scholars Program launched the Achievement Gap Initiative, a 4-year pilot program emphasizing intensive academic preparation to target the scholastic divide that adversely affects students of color, especially Black and Latino students. The SEO Achievement Gap Initiative adds the equivalent of 48 school days to the 180-day public school calendar for our students – devoted to critical reading, critical writing, vocabulary, grammar and mathematics. We are building this initiative upon the solid record of success of the SEO Scholars Program. The Scholars Program currently serves 225 NYC public high school students and 167 college students nationwide. In the past two Scholars classes, 100% of our students graduated from high school in four years with a Regents diploma, and more than 75% of these students went on to colleges in the top three tiers of selectivity. Overall, SEO Scholars earned more than $600,000 in scholarships and grants last year. SEO-U A PIPELINE TO SUCCESS

Visit www.seo-usa.org/career for more information on SEO-U.

SEO-U is a growing pipeline of freshman and sophomore college students interested in learning more about careersin finance. SEO-U hopes to reach high potential students as early as possible to provide them with the advanced toolsand understanding of finance necessary to strengthen their candidacy when applying to the SEO Career Program.SEO-U offers a robust curriculum with access to SEO’s top online training programs, which are not only used to trainSEO Career Program interns but also analysts and associates at major banks and corporations. In addition, studentshave access to Vault Career Guides, the SEO-U online community and all participants are assigned an SEO alumnus/aor staff member as a mentor, with over 100 alumni serving in this role. Finally, participants are invited to attend anSEO-U Day where they continue to receive practical training and are able to interact with SEO alumni. On August 15th, SEO-U Day in Atlanta served as an all day professional development workshop, which included anoverview of SEO Career Program areas, resume and interview guidance, tips on individual brand management andcyber reputation. On August 16th, in New York City, the SEO-U Day attracted more than 70 prospective intern candidates and includeda reception where students had the opportunity to meet SEO alumni and staff. Those in attendance were tested ontheir knowledge of SEO and finance, and rewarded with prizes for correctly answering questions about corporatefinance, asset management, sales and trading, and business etiquette.

SEO recently received a two-year grant from the CitigroupFoundation to support the launch of SEO’s African AmericanOutreach Initiative. Following the successful implementation ofSEO’s Hispanic Outreach Initiative four years ago, SEO and Citigroup’sshared goal is to expand awareness among African Americanstudents of the opportunities for rewarding careers in the financialservices industry. SEO’s first step in expanding its reach was to establish a full-timestaff position based in Atlanta to serve as its regional programmanager and help build awareness of SEO by strengthening relationships at campuses throughout the South East.In just one year, SEO has doubled its reach to ten Historically BlackColleges and Universities (HBCU) campuses and plans to reach atotal of twenty HBCU campuses in the coming year throughpersonal and online recruitment efforts. The African American Outreach Initiative also focuses on buildingpartnerships with national fraternities, sororities, honor societiesand civic organizations such as Phi Beta Sigma, Jack & Jill, NationalUrban League Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP) and LEAD.The support of the Citigroup Foundation has been integral to theprogram’s success as it aims to broaden the pool of AfricanAmerican students who are prepared to benefit from the internshipopportunities offered by SEO.

Vassar College hosts rising 12th grade Scholars

on campus for a week.

This summer, rising seniors in theSEO Scholars Program had theopportunity to attend a week-longresidential program at VassarCollege. Funded by a grant from theTeagle Foundation, the experienceat Vassar seeks to introduceScholars to the resources and opportunities of a liberal arts college, and toseminar style college classes.Every day the students attended a two-hour reading discussion and an hour-and-a-half session with multimedia sources, led by Vassar professors in English,Art and Writing. This summer’s focus was on the Civil Rights Movement andthe Vassar program is an excellent opportunity for Scholars to explore a smallclassroom setting and get an in-depth view of a subject they are often onlyable to touch on in high school.During lunchtime, Scholars met with the dean of admissions, the dean of students, other Vassar representatives and current students. “We wanted them to be immersed in college life and college-level academics so they will know what’sexpected of them — and what resources are available to them,” says LeslieDunn, Vassar English professor and the person who spearheaded the SEO atVassar project. Dunn was drawn to the program in part because it was a way to open the dialogbetween Vassar and secondary schools. “Often, students who don’t have accessto prep classes are thrown for a loop when they enter college because professorshave very different expectations from their high-school teachers.”This week-long experience helps students clearly envision themselves oncompetitive college campuses such as Vassar, as they gain understanding ofthe academic rigors, campus life and college process first-hand. With threeSEO Scholars currently attending Vassar College as freshman, the program’simpact is clearly evident!
