PRESIDENTIAL PAGE
This issue of Sikaran Taliba shows the two greatest Filipino leaders, his Excellency
Ferdinand E. Marcos, President of the Republic of the Philippines and Supremo Meliton C.
Geronimo of the World Sikaran Brotherhood.
The picture was taken in January 1971, during the graduation ceremonies of the First
Presidential Security Command’s Sikaran Class. Several Sikaran classes followed this one
leading to the adoption of Sikaran as the Unarmed Martial Art of the Special Services Branches
of the military installations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
If you belong to the military or police services, you will love Sikaran. Sikaran can change
your life, even save your life, your career or home life. Even if you are not in the military or
police services, you will still love Sikaran because of the ideas which will apply to you as a
brilliant insight to public safety work and other high stress situations.
To many men and women, the actual journey through martial arts studies begins with the
acceptance in a Sikaran class. The acceptance in a Sikaran class signifies both a major
accomplishment and a starting point.
Growing up in the General Sikaran Headquarters in Pasay City, I met and trained with
several of Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo’s students and trusted assistants who shared with
me their skill in Sikaran and various other martial arts and their life experience. The lessons I
learned from them prepared me for what I will eventually need to lead the World Sikaran
Brotherhood.
This eventful day came about in March 2015 when Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo
passed on the Sikaran Torch of Leadership and Presidency of the World Sikaran Brotherhood to
me.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. receives the World Sikaran Brotherhood Book of Records
from Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, Grandmaster of the World Sikaran Brotherhood.
5th World Sikaran Brotherhood
Tournament of Champions World Sikaran Tournaments Always A BIG SUCCESS
By: Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.
9th Degree Red and White Belt
President, World Sikaran Brotherhood
In 1986, the First World Tournament of the World Sikaran Brotherhood (WSB) was held in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada hosted by Dante S. Alambra. The Second World Sikaran Tournament
was held in Manila, Philippines in 1994 and hosted by Sikaran Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo.
The Third World Sikaran Tournament was again held at Winnipeg and again hosted by Dante S.
Alambra in 1996. In 1998, the First Open International Sikaran Tournament was hosted by
Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo in Manila, Philippines. For the third time, eight years later, on May
10, 2014, the Fourth World Sikaran Brotherhood Tournament was again held at Winnipeg, Manitoba,
and hosted by no one else but by Dante S. Alambra. Tournament Director was Dante's son Dastin
Alambra.
In 2017, the Fifth World Sikaran Tournament will be held in the Philippines, under the
auspices of the World Sikaran Brotherhood.
It is very unfortunate that most of the record and the pictures of the past prestigious albeit
World Sikaran Tournaments were lost forever when they got drenched by several past typhoons that
destroyed the Headquarters of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. Thanks to the hard
work of several members of the World Sikaran Brotherhood headquarters they were able to
reconstruct some information of the events.
It is with a sad heart that we are offering here bits and pieces of these events, and we are
begging the pardon of all those concerned for our inability to present a decent record of these
noteworthy occasions.

3rd WORLD SIKARAN CHAMPIONSHIP AT WINNIPEG, MANITOBA CANADA ON
JUNE 1, 1996
IN 1998, THE FIRST OPEN INTERNATIONAL SIKARAN
TOURNAMENT WAS HELD IN MANILA, PHILIPPINES HOSTED BY
THE WORLD SIKARAN BROTHERHOOD OF THE PHILIPPINES.
There were 2 teams that participated. Team Philippines and Team North America. The only record
that survived is the record that somehow got stuck in the memories of Andy Sanano, and his student
Rick Scripter, which they posted in Facebook, and which we are reprinting here.
"Looking back to 1998, we can see a remarkable event in the Filipino Martial Arts. Guro Andy
Sanano, of the Sanano Sikaran Club of Rapid City, South Dakota and Guro Dante Alambra, of
Sikaran-Arnis of Winnipeg, Manitoba, formed an international North American Sikaran team. The
Team prepared to go to the Philippines for the International Sikaran Tournament of 1998. Once in the
Philippines and prior to the event the Team spent some time training in Baras, Batangas and Manila.
The team also spent some time in Tagaytay City.
Below is a listing of the results of the participation by the North American Sikaran Team:
1998 International Invitational Sikaran Tournament

The primary sponsor for Team North America was Greenhill’s Realty, a company based in
Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The following is a letter of comment regarding the experience of one of the participants in the events
in and surrounding the tournament.
“Dear fellow students,
Over the last two weeks I have had the honor of accompanying Guro Sanano, Seniors O’Cilka and
many members of the North American Sikaran Team. It was an experience that I will never forget.
We could write a long story about our experiences. I will just try to hit the highlights.
The people of the Philippines are basically poor. However, they are friendly, accommodating, and
happy. They show much respect for other people. The Philippine fighters were very good, but when
the bouts were over, they were polite and friendly. They came to us and asked if they could please
take a picture with us. They are very upbeat and positive. A good example is that they do not call
themselves fighters, they call themselves “players.”
Elders are always held in the highest regard. As a post-script to a statement, a much younger person
would add “po,” meaning, “With much respect.” Example: “salamat-po” or “thank you, with much
respect.” Also, elders and youngsters alike, when they had to walk between other people, would
lower their arms with straightened fingers and a slightly hunched back and slightly lowered head, as
a show of respect.
Both the North American and the Philippine players who played in the tournament demonstrated to
me a tremendous amount of humility. Let us remember that humility is simply a lack of arrogance
and is not synonymous with “wimpy-ness.” On the contrary, a person with true humbleness, knows
his rightful place in the world and amongst its’ people and is unfettered by the need to “prove” him
or herself.
Thanks again to the club members who kept us up and running while we were gone.
Sincerely,
Rick Scripter”
P.S. It is clear that looking back at the tournament is a view of a significant event in the development
and recent history of Sikaran and the Filipino Martial Arts."

EXPERIENCE, AWARDS, AND POSITIONS HELD IN THE MARTIAL ARTS Andy Sanano was born in Legazpi City, in the Province of Albay. He learned the rudiments of
armed and unarmed fighting, from his grandfather and uncles who were the caretakers of their family art,
the Labing-Tatlong Hampas system of Arnis de Mano. His adversary in training was the banana trees and the tall cogon grass while walking in the field. Little did he know that he was being prepared to someday
take over their family art.
When their family moved to Manila, he sought training in the other fighting arts. He joined the Sikaran class at the Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines gymnasium in Pasay City. His insatiable
appetite for the fighting arts led him to join the Pering Cruz Dojo where the curriculum included Karate,
Judo, Ju-jitsu, Aikido and Arnis de Mano, where his growing-up "play in the fields" started to have meaning.
Relatives, adopted Andy in 1961, after his father passed away. After receiving his Black Belt in
Sikaran/Karate at the age of 18 his adopted parents brought him to San Francisco, California. While in
San Francisco, Kempo was added to his martial arts repertoire. He joined the United States Air Force and was eventually stationed in Ellsworth Air Force Base
in South Dakota, where he retired after 20 years. He also served for 16 years as a Reserve Lieutenant with
the Rapid City (South Dakota) Police Department assigned to the Special Response Team (SRT), sometimes referred to as SWAT in other Police Agencies.
While in the service, he trained in all the martial arts that came his way, like Tae Kwon Do,
Uechi-ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, White Crane Kung-Fu, Aikido, and other weapon arts. He holds high-ranking Black Belt Degrees in several martial arts, including an 9th Degree Red and White Belt
(Reg. No. 844) from the World Sikaran Brotherhood. To honor his family art, he consolidated all the
systems he learned and formed the Sanano Martial Arts System (SMAS) with numerous affiliates all over
the United States. His expertise in the martial arts won him several gold medals in competitions and tournaments.
He was also honored in several Halls of Fame by different National and International Martial Arts
organization. He was also one of the most sought after Martial Arts Instructor in various workshops and seminars.
In 2010, Andy and other Filipino Martial Arts Teachers formed the Matawguro Association
Filipino Martial Arts Education for Arnis de Mano, of which he is the International Coordinator.
Also in 2010, the United Fellowship of Martial Artists, with headquarters in the East Coast, vested on Andy an Award of Excellence, for the Propagation and Development of the Filipino Martial Arts in the

The flag of Italy is a tricolor flag - three equal vert ical bands of green (hoist side),
white, and red. The design, a vertical tricolor, was inspired by the French flag
brought to Italy by Napoleon. The first state to use the Italian tricolor was the
Cispadane Republic in 1797, which supplanted Milan after Napoleon's victorious
army reached Italy in 1796. The colors of the flag were derived from the flag of
Milan (red and white) an d the uniform of the civic guard of Milan (green).
Aklan is the oldest province in the Philippines with an area of 703 square miles. In comparison,
Milan is 70.18 square miles. Milan is one of the most ancient cities in Europe, and for that matter
the world, with over 26 centuries of history and heritage. Aklan is in Western Visayas in
Southeast Asia and Milan is in the northern part of Italy, in Europe. It is the second largest city in
Italy, second only to Rome. It is sometimes called Fashion Center of the World. With all the
things that make Milan (or Milano) famous, soon it will also be known as the home of Armie
Esparcia and her A (for Armie) and Spark (for Esparcia) Sikaran Bothoan (martial arts school).
Sometimes she gives meaning to A as ACE and Spark for SPARKLING, or Sparkling Ace
Sikaran. It was in summer of 1990, when this sweet teenager decided to learn Sikaran. She was a
High School freshman at the Aklan State University in Banga, Aklan. At her young age, she
showed potential in the martial arts. She juggled her time between Sikaran and school, enjoying and
excelling in both. She became the first black belt in her class. Twenty years ago in 1993, while a Junior in
High School, she joined their Sikaran Team that competed in the Marikina Invitational Tournament where she won Third Place. It was her first time in Manila and she was amazed at the glittering lights and the
busy traffic. She said to herself, “one day soon I will see the rest of the world.” She garnered several gold
medals in tournaments including provincial, and regional meets. In 1996, she competed in the Palarong
Pambansa (Philippine National Games) held at Marbel, South Cotabato and came home victorious. In 1997, when the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines held its National Tournament in Aklan,
Armie won the Gold Medal in the Junior Women’s Division. Her determination and perseverance paid off
when she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. She took the Board for Civil Engineers but before she can practice her profession, she received a job offer in Norway where she stayed
until 2004. After her contract in Norway, she opted to go to Milan, Italy where she was offered another
job and a better opportunity to succeed in life.
On her graduation, this is what Armie said”: After all those years of being busy, I finally finished my studies. It is hard to study, and do other things at the same time. However, with courage and determination to achieve our goal, and with the power of prayer to our God Almighty, the creator of heaven and earth and with good aim we will hit the target. Bulls eye we got it.

BALANGKAS NG BAGWIS NG
HARIBON
PHILIPPINE EAGLE OR MONKEY-EATING EAGLE
(PHITECOPHAGA JEFFERYI)
The complete name of this balangkas is Bagwis ng Haribon (the local name for the
Philippine Eagle or Haring Ibon). Sometimes, however, it is also referred to simply as
Bagwis or Haribon.
The balangkas ng Bagwis ng Haribon is made up of a series of open-hand techniques
executed in slow, forceful manner with deep and guttural exhalation through the mouth. This
balangkas does not have any kicking maneuver. It has also no point for bunyaw. Properly and
constantly practiced, this balangkas will toughen the mind and strengthen the body through
the "isometric training" performed with the breathing sequence. The short stance, combined
with the breathing and muscle contraction develop explosive and penetrating power and
quick reflex. This balangkas was designed to "unify the mind, the body and the spirit."
Stances in this balangkas are Tayong Bangko (hour-glass stance).
Bagwis (wings) simulates the wing movements of the Philippine Eagle (or monkey-eating
eagle)when attacking its favorite meal, the monkey.
This balangkas is an adaptation from a balangkas na banyaga with the original open hand
techniques of Southern Chinese origin as taught by Chinese Master Chua Tiong Ki to
Meliton Geronimo. Sikaran Hari Cipriano Geronimo, also known as Anong Agila, named
the balangkas. Haribon is also an acronym for Cipriano being Hari and his nickname Agila
(eagle).
