Greetings From Your......

Potentate and First LadyHopefully, everyone is doing well and being safe. In these trying times it is hard to have to stay in and not be able to go as you please.

I really wanted to have a Welcome Back Party in July, and have Stated Meetings in July, and August, but due to the Covid-19 virus, we are not able to gather in larger groups with the guidelines that are in place. As your Potentate, it is my duty to try my best to keep the Nobility and their Ladies safe so that we can be together later in the year.

I hope September will be much better. I am looking forward to having the Labor Day Parade and Direc-tors Staff fish fry after the parade.

Many of you are extremely disappointed that the State Fair was canceled, but if this is an indicator of what is to come, it is not looking very bright.

The main thing is that we are in this together. We will overcome this unfortunate situation and I pray it will make us stronger.

At the beginning of this year I was saying “Looking to the Future in 2020”, but as our new Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Jim Smith says, “Having Fun in 2021”. Let us all keep our heads up and look forward to being able to reunite in having Fun and Fellowship soon.

As always if I can ever be of assistance please contact me directly at 214-762-6077.

Yours in Faith of better things to come,

Illustrious John KrodelPotentate Hella Shrine

Oriental GuideI hope this finds everyone happy and well !

As you know, things are VERY DIFFERENT at Hella right now! There are so many things we WANT to do, but CAN’T. We are still planning on having our Bucket Drive, though pending approval from the city of Rockwall. It will definitely be a different situation, but we will work thru the challenges if we have the chance to go forward with it! Also, if we are able to do it, I’m looking at putting together a Corn Hole Tournament sometime in late September or maybe October. That would depend, of course, on if we are able to hold the event and if we have a free date on the calendar to use part of Hella to host

it. I would really like to gear this towards getting as many of our own Nobles and our “non-Shriner” lodge brothers to participate. It would be AWESOME to have the different lodges and units to have their members play and maybe even form some two man teams to play doubles. More to come on this in September! I’m also looking at what we can do for our Military Appreciation Night in November, again, if we are able to hold the event. I may need to enlist some help and or ideas so be ready if I come to you!! Let’s make the 2nd half of the year the absolute best we can! I would like to challenge the Nobility, and their Ladies, to bring me ideas of what we can do for Hella and the surrounding communities to make things easier, or to help others get thru all that we are having to deal with now. Maybe we can do a blood drive, or help our school kids in some way, or the homeless in our area... things that we as Masons and Shriners do with a huge and willing heart! Get these ideas to me and I will get with the rest of the Divan to see what we can do! Let’s help those around us and show our communities what Hella can and will do for the better good ! On a different note... I want to ask all our Nobles, and their Ladies as well, to please do what you can to help stop the spread. I’m not a HUGE fan of having to wear a mask. As someone who lost his father recently to the virus, I will do all I can to keep myself safe and healthy and not put others around me, who may be in a higher risk group than myself, safe and healthy as well. We just all need to do what we can to help us ALL get thru this pandemic. We’ve never been in a situation like this, but we can come out on the other side if we just all band together and do our part! I’ll get off my soapbox now! LOL!

Fraternally,Steve Lang

Chief Rabban Which of us could have predicted this past January that we would have to wear a mask to go into any business? Which of us can tell how this would have affected our economy? It has been difficult to run the business of Hella Shrine. I will say our Recorder, Wayne Osborne, is doing an excellent job. He has cut expenditures everywhere that is possible. Even to the point of making sure all A/C is off by 5 pm and not turned on till 6 am the next morning. Then not turned on at all on the weekend. He has renegotiated several contracts that has saved us money. He is getting volunteers to mow grass, edge etc. for the outside of our area to keep looking presentable. The main restrooms are almost finished. That project was done completely with donated money.

Enough doom and gloom. On the upside we are having some events. We can have events at this time of 50 percent of our capacity. Once we are open, almost every weekend is booked till the end of the year and into next year. Our office staff is working hard to make sure Hella Shrine is a success. Of course we will be a success, we know of no other way to be. We are one of the lucky Shrines in Texas. We are in better shape than some of our brothers around this great state. Sure, you might have to have your meeting early and/or at a different location now. Or you might even think about using our Pavilion. with clean restrooms, and you do not have to wear a mask outside, unless you want to. But all of this helps us work together to keep Hella Shrine strong and to be a survivor instead of another statistic. We are all in this fight together. We are Hella Shrine. The best Shrine in the Great State of Texas. We will survive and just posibly come out of this stronger than when we went into this epidemic. Remember keep your faith because the Great Architect of the Universe is listening to our prayers and our praises. Fraternally,Mike Hall, Chief Rabban

High Priest and ProphetGreeting Nobles I wish you all the utmost safety and good health. The Hospital and Fund-Raising Committee meetings are currently being held off site, due to the Covid-19 mandated guidelines set forth by the Governor of Texas. My intent is to ensure the safety of our high-risk members who will attend a called committee meeting at the Temple, as they quite simply want to stay engaged and do what we’ve always done. Some cannot wear a mask and I have been reminded of the consequences of mandating the action relative to the ADA Law. All restaurants have specific guidelines to operate under the pandemic environment and they are responsible for enforcement, or lack thereof. Face mask must be worn to enter the restaurants, social distancing adhered to unless comfortable setting in a small group (10 or less max). Please, if you don’t feel comfortable, certainly stay home and stay safe.Upcoming Meetings and Events:

» Hella Stated Meetings “dark” until at least September 17th » August 28-30th - Car Parts Sell at the equestrian arena - CANCELLED » August 29th - Car Show at the Hella parking lot- concession available (10 am - 2 pm) PENDING, an EMAIL will be sent to all as this event develops. » Hospital Bucket Drive location sign-up sheets will be available at the Hospital and Fund Raiser meetings in August (Hospital on the 16th and Fund Raiser on the 21st) at 6:30 pm (Matt’s Restaurant 5085 N President George Bush Hwy, Garland Texas.) The Rockwall PERMIT has been approved! » Hospital Bucket Drive Kick-Off meeting is September 10th at 6 P.M. (meeting room TBD) » Bucket Drive Collection will be in full form September 11-12th (PLEASE volunteer to support the effort)!

Shrine Units and Club meetings may begin to navigate the precautionary standards necessary to comply with the State guidelines rela-tive to Covid-19. Please notify the Recorders office of meeting start-up with date/place/time. The office will ensure the communication goes out in the “Happening at Hella” distribution to the Nobility. All Nobles must continue to exhibit an Ambassador role when communicating our purpose and activities to Master Masons within the appendage bodies we attend. This is VERY important! Please plan to attend the Hospital and Fund-Raising meetings. We need your input, discussion and volunteer support for the upcoming events. We are HELLA, and we serve the greatest purpose in support of the Shriner Hospitals and Temple. Please stand up and be counted when called upon to lead or participate.

Be safe, diligent and stay healthy!

Nate FullerHigh Priest and Prophet

Assistant Rabban I was hoping that we would be past the pandemic and I could write to you this month and declare that the Shrine is back to normal operations. Unfortunately, that is not the case. COVID-19 is very serious and has drastically changed the way we are operating. Out of an abundance of caution, your Divan has canceled the July and August Stated Meetings. We are limiting committee and unit meetings at the Temple and doing what we can to help you stay safe during these turbulent times. Although we can’t meet in groups, we can still stay in touch with each other. Take a few minutes out of your day and reach out to a Noble you have not seen lately. A phone call or a letter from you may be all it takes to put a smile on a brother’s face. Not only may it cheer him up, you will be surprised how it might make you feel better. A simple act of kindness can be as beneficial to the person giving as to the person receiving. When you reach out to that Noble whom we have not seen in a while, you may find that he is in distress or having

a problem. It may be something simple that you can assist with. A simple task for you may make all the difference to him. If his needs are beyond what you can help with, don’t despair. Reach out to one of the Divan members to see if we as a Shrine can assist. We need to pull together as a Shrine to help each other get through these trying times. With all of this going on, we still need to keep membership on our minds. With our activities limited, it is hard to invite a potential member to come out and learn more about the Shrine. However, you can still talk about the Shrine and promote it to your friends and lodge brothers. I received an email recently from a fellow Noble. He informed me that he had worn his Hella unit shirt to a blue lodge meeting and the Worshipful Master gave him two minutes to promote the Shrine during the meeting. He recruited a new member just by wearing a Hella shirt and being willing to talk about the fun and fellowship of the Shrine. It really is that easy sometimes. So, wear your Hella shirt or a Shrine pin when it is appropriate and be ready and willing to promote the Shrine when given the opportunity. Although the Spring Ceremonial had to be canceled, we will do short form ceremonials anytime we have candidates. So, promote the Shrine every chance you get and get those petitions so that the Shrine can continue to provide fun and fellowship for years to come.

FUNDRAISING-FUNDRAISING-FUNDRAISING This is the primary message that still needs to be conveyed this year to ensure success, our Nobility must get involved! New Nobles, you are the future, and we hope to see you at all events scheduled! We have several fundraising events planned for this year however, the success of these events lies strongly on the help and participation of the Hella Nobility. It is important that all Nobles grasp the opportunity to get involved and volunteer to help. This does not necessarily mean the day of the event. There are a lot of needs prior to the actual event day. For virtually each fundraising event we need items to offer for auction or door prizes. Of course, it is best if these items are donated rather than us having to purchase them. Your assistance in procuring these items is greatly appreciated. We need Sponsors! This is where a majority of the money in fundraising events is made. It is very important that volun-teers help communicate to persons or businesses of our needs for each event. The Fundraising Committee Meetings will be held each Monday following the Stated Meeting except July of 2020. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm in the Terrace Room unless otherwise communicated. There will be a meal planned prior to each meeting and as one might assume, there will be times during the year this date might be adjusted due to holidays. You are invited and encouraged to join in on fundraising this year. It cannot be stressed enough how much your assistance is needed. Below is a list of fundraising events we currently have on the calendar for 2020:

Temple Fund Raisers 1. Aug. 22nd – Sportsman Banquet at Hella in Ball Room. Cancelled due to Covid-19 circumstance. Hopefully we can schedule this very important event in 2021, we expect this to be a huge fund raiser for our Temple.2. August 22-30th – Car Part Sell at the horse arena… concessions available, join the fun!2. Oct. 3rd – Hella Top Golf Tournament at Top Golf in Allen, TBD, more to come on this event.

Hospital Fund Raisers1. Mad Dogg Moore Fishing Tournament on Sept 12th has been Cancelled due to Covid-192. July 24th – Hella Classic Crandall is Cancelled, though the Greenville Race is still scheduled for July 25th 3. Bucket Drive kick off is planned for September 10th at 6:30 pm and the Collection Drive is scheduled for September 11-12th (tentively)

We all have a responsibly as members, as we took the same obligation when we became Shriners. Your opinion matters a great deal! Get involved, voice your opinion and be proud of what your Temple can achieve through your support!

Parades Are The Backbone of Our Fraternity!Everett Warner – Marshall

At this time these are the Parades Hella Shrine has scheduled; as always, this list is subject to change!

From the Treasurer’s Chest The best laid plans always never go your way. In my July article I said we would meet for a Stated Meeting and that got cancelled along with our summer scheduled fund rais-ing events. We will remain Dark for the rest of the Summer as we ride out the COVID surge that occurred in Texas. At the July Stated Meeting, here’s what I was going to present: We finished the second quarter in not as good of shape as we wanted. As stated last month, all of our scheduled summer Hella and paid catering events were cancelled. Some of the fall events are now rescheduled. Some good news, we finished the second

quarter in the black. Our income for the two quarters totaled $331,120.77. Expenses for the two quarters totaled $228,258.88 which gives us a difference profit and loss of 31% on the plus side. The bad news is we pretty much used all of the PPE money from the government and donations for the projects to complete the projects and pay day to day expenses of Hella. With three months of running under the cloud of COVID, a reevaluation of Hella’s income and expenses was done to determine what monies are needed to finish out the year. Please note that our Recorder, PP Wayne Osborne, has done a phenomenal job of cutting all expenses to the bare essentials to save costs. This includes reworking the insurance contract for Hella down to about 30% of its original premium if all goes well. Our bylaws and rules and regulations permit us to spend from the Invested Reserve Account to pay for taxes and insurance. To keep our cash flow from evaporating, we will be implementing those provisions permitting us to make these payments from the account. However, a request to the Nobility to withdraw funds from the Invested Operating Account may be made at our September Stated Meeting to ease that cash flow. As I stated last month, we are continuing to looking to see how it goes at the end of August before we have to make that decision. To ease that cash flow issues, we are still looking for donations for the special projects such as the “Big Screen” for use inside the ballroom. Once installed, we’ll be able to lease it along with the ballroom to those wanting to rent it for future events. The thing is, when we have the green light from Governor Abbott to pro-ceed with events, we have plenty of events booked. Also at the end of August, dues notices will be sent out to the dues paying Nobles. As Treasurer, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of promptly paying your dues upon receipt of the notice. If you’re experiencing problems in paying, please contact us to see what ar-rangements can be made. We definitely don’t want to lose you and your lady!! At Hella we strive to see to your safety at our meetings and our events. The quest to keep the pandemic from overwhelming us is first and foremost. Talk to you next month. May brotherly love prevail, and peace and harmony be our chief strength and support.

Be Safe, Be HealthySteve

THINK MEMBERSHIP

Page 15The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

TOGETHER WE CAN grow our fraternity and philanthropy

A friend? A family member? A co-worker? Membership Growth If every current Shriner resolves to recruit or restore “Just One” noble to

Hella Temple, the brotherhood’s ranks will swell tremendously!

Page 16 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

Are you committed to membership? The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment, retention, and

restoration. As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more

Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospital for Children. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations. Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development

changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. With this new referral functionality, current nobles can now directly

refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners.

We’re Counting on you!

REFER A GOOD MAN TODAY!

Dear Noble Sirs, At the Imperial Session, we saw the unveiling of new Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s “Just One” campaign to increase Shriner membership. A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to his temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously. In order to build enthusiasm for the Just One initiative and keep it going, we are instituting a multi-level program for recognizing and rewarding top-line signers in the creation/restoration process for their successful efforts bringing in new members or restoring suspended members. These are:• Level 1 – Upon creation or restoration of one member, the top-line signer will receive a postcard and Just One pin from Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder.• Level 2 – Upon bringing in two members, the top-line signer will be listed in the Shriner Magazine.• Level 3 – With three new creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a certificate of appreciation and a letter of commendation from Imperial Sir Sowder.• Level 4 – After five creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a personal phone call from the Imperial Potentate.• Level 5 – Top-line signers responsible for 10 additional Shriner brothers will receive a special invitation to attend a Just One VIP reception with the Imperial Divan at the 2020 Imperial Session. Along with these points of recognition, your temple will probably also want to honor your brothers who embrace the challenge of helping grow local membership. As a record-keeping aid, “Just One” prospect cards were presented at Imperial Session, and will be made available to temples to share with their members. If your temple has members using the cards, you will either need to assign someone to collect them and enter the information into the WebFez MDS, or have the member enter the information himself. (https://webfez.shrinenet.org/nextstep). If you have any questions about the Just One program, please contact the Membership Office at Shriners Internation-al by email at [email protected] or call (813) 281-0300. Fraternally yours,Shriners International Membership TeamTampa, Florida
