Dear Federated Friends, Writer Ann Weems wrote this about the season of Lent: Lent is a time to take the time to let the power of our faith story take hold of us, a time to let the events get up and walk around in us, a time to intensify our living unto Christ. Lent began for me with the wonderfully full sanctuary at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ — kids, youth, parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends in Christ. There were so many in attendance at the Ash Wednesday service that it seemed we would run out of bread and cups for communion — but we had just enough! The photo of Vianne and Eliot above is a reminder for us of those formative faith moments. As Ann Weems wrote, it is the moments — even at very young ages — when we let the events get up and walk around in us. One thing I took the time to do in the season of Lent had to do with the power of my faith story to take hold. I travelled to Kansas City in mid-March to attend the NEXT Church Conference. It was quite possibly the best church conference I’ve attended for quality and quantity of great ideas and learning.

I attended three worship services with great preachers and super music. The speakers and testimonies in the plenary session each of the three days were very engaging. The three workshops I attended were fantastic: 1) Reconcilers, Church, Community, and Law Enforcement – with a police chaplain 2) Navigate “That” Talk – with Yena Hwang, Bertram Johnson, and Tara Spuhler McCabe about white privilege and the church “Paperless” Music for Enlivening and Enriching Worship – with Paul Vasile – all singing!! I have already shared with the Adult Education class a video of one of the

plenary speakers. I also got advice from fellow clergy about how to develop a Covenant of Membership with Boundaries. It was a fruitful three days.

On a personal note, it was great to stay with Don and Joy Wilson during the NEXT Church conference. Our daughter, Vianne, loved playing with Tucker the Cat (in the photo on the previous page relaxing in Don’s arms). We were grateful that their daughter-in-law Clare was feeling well enough to take a Spring Break trip with Russ and their kids. Another wonderful thing about the Lenten

time at the NEXT Conference was that I was able to visit with several people formative on my journey of faith — folks who have helped me, in Ann Weems’ word, intensify our living unto Christ. As some of you heard me talk about in last week’s sermon, I reunited with Shannan Vance-Ocampo, one of three women with whom I shared an apartment in seminary (photo above). I also had the opportunity to visit with two ministers, Jim Gordon and Heather Hayes, who served my grandparents’ church in Dallas Center in the 1980s and 1990s (photo in middle of this page). Jim met me as a teen and, later, Heather knew me as a college student. Now they are wonderful ministerial colleagues from whom I

can continue to learn from and share ideas with. I also visited with two ministers from Des Moines presbytery who were involved with the El Salvador partnership that was such an important part of my vocational discernment. Finally, Vianne reunited with Rev. Tim Hart-Andersen, the minister who baptized her as a baby. She is now old enough to “thank” Tim…..so while we ministers “talked church,” Vianne created fabulous artistic eyewear additions for her and Tim’s glasses (photo on left). Lent is a time to take the time. I pray that your Lenten journey has been time to intensify our living unto Christ so that we are rejuvenated for our life in Christ together. It’s a life-long journey! Thanks be to God. Happy Easter!

Easter lilies and begonias remaining in the sanctuary after

residing in the retirement centers and nursing homes of

Columbus. Your donation is greatly appreciated.

Lenten “Greening of the Church”

As we begin the season of Lent, you will notice that the artificial

plants are absent from the chancel in the sanctuary. The

chancel will remained unadorned through the second week of

Lent. After that, members and friends of the congregation are

invited to help the “greening of the church” as we journey

closer to Easter. If you have a houseplant you are willing to loan

to the chancel space from March 15 through April 16 (Easter),

please bring the plant and place it on the chancel, which will

be gradually more “greened” through each week of Lent. This

liturgical visual reminder of the Lenten season and God’s gift of

spring is another way to prayerfully consider our Lenten

journeys. After Easter, you are welcome to take your houseplant

home or to donate it to the church.

Camperships are currently available to Kamp Kaleo.

Please notice that the deadline for application is MAY 1,

2017. There is $1,000 available in the Living Waters Association

budget which will be divided among applicants. This budget

item will be discussed at the 2017 annual fall meeting for

possible change. Applications are available from the church

office or via email. Please contact Jim or Chrissy:

[email protected] or 402-564-2812.

Birthdays run from the 15th of the current month

Time to Start Thinking About Our

Annual Garage and Bake Sale! Mark the week of July 10-15 on your

calendar now for the Annual Garage and

Bake Sale, then start gathering things to

donate! Preparation at the church will be

July 10-14 and sale day is July 15th. Linda

Wheatley (402-564-8677) with support from

the Rhombus group, has so graciously

agreed to be the 2017 chair of this

project! This sale is always well supported

by our church members and greatly

appreciated by the many community

members who come to shop. As always,

we will need lots of item donations,

individuals to supervise the individual

rooms, volunteers to sort and mark, and

sale workers on the day of the sale. Make

Linda’s job easier by letting her know how

you would like to help this year!!!
