CSCS Celebrates 65 Years!

Saturday October 22nd was a very magical evening for the Canadian Slovenian Cultural Society (CSCS). On that day, we celebrated our 65th Anni‐versary of our existence with a Gala Celebra on Evening.

Prepara on for this event began many months earlier, and it all came together won‐derfully at our Celebra on Evening! Our event planner and head cook Kris na Ma‐jowski did a fabulous job deco‐ra ng the hall, and preparing a wonderful meal and a tableful of pastries. Much me was spent by Stan Majowski work‐ing with VIPs and working with our band in Ontario to arrange for a mutually agreed date.

Our band, Ansambel Brajda, arrived into Winnipeg Friday evening, and this was the trio’s 4th trip to our community. They entertained us the past 3

mes, and this me would prove no different. Their abil‐ity to showcase Slovenian music, both polkas and waltz‐es, was beau ful. The three gentlemen are absolutely fab‐ulous musicians, and the love they have for Slovenian music is truly hear elt. The commu‐nity very much enjoyed their music!

Also joining us for this evening, was the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Cana‐da, Dr. Marjan Cencen. Dr. Cencen arrived in Winnipeg Saturday morning, and had a very frui ul visit to the Mani‐

toba Museum. Luke Majowski served as his personal tour guide. They spent over 4 hours at the Museum, and the Am‐bassador was enthralled with the history of the Winnipeg and Manitoba area.

When our evening did start, we were also joined by the Provincial Government, repre‐sented by Janice Morley‐Lecomte, the MLA for Seine River. It is always wonderful to include our Provincial Govern‐ment, as their support of our community has always been second to none!

Our Host and Master of Cere‐monies, Mark Lebar, started our evening with a wonderful introduc on, and a er Grace was said by our parish priest, Fr. Diosdado Parrenas, dinner was served.

A er dinner, gree ngs were brought to the community by Dr. Marjan Cencen and Ms Janice Morley‐Lecomte. CSCS President Stan Majowski also spoke about the need to pro‐vide leadership guidance and mentorship to our youth, so that they can take addi onal responsibility in our communi‐ty.

A er the speeches, the dance floor was cleared of the buffet tables, and the band took the stage, front and centre. Before too long, many people were kicking up their heels to lively polka or waltz music made famous by many Slovenian

ar sts, such as Slak, Mladi Dolenjci, and Avsenik!

A very special 90th Birthday gree ng to long me CSCS member and community sup‐port, Mrs. Ana Sukic. Mrs. Sukic was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the Catholic Women’s League, and a 90th Birthday cake was brought by her family. This type of excep onal birthday just made the evening that much more special!

As always, the evening ended much too quickly. Lots of work went into preparing for the evening, and before you know it, it’s over! Even though it ended very quickly, it was a wonderful evening for all who a ended.

Visit the CSCS Facebook page for pictures of this evening.

Our thanks to the following people, who assisted in mak‐ing this evening a wonderful event:

Adam Majowski Boris Poredos Danny Gregoric Eric Marinko Kris na Majowski Kris na Van Buren Luke Majowski Mark Lebar Mike Gregoric Sabrina Simonic Stan Majowski Teresa Kozicki Tony Sadl Trip Prasad

BINGO! The CSCS has started opera ng a BINGO during the fall to spring me period, holding a BINGO every other month a er church Mass and Sunday coffee. Usually an average of 50 – 60 people par cipate in 2 hours of BINGO. The largest payout has been over $150.00 for the Jackpot games. The BINGO’s are well a ended by a broad sec on of our communi‐ty, from seniors to young adults to even children. Look for BINGO’s to resume in October 2017!

LEADERSHIP!

In November, 2016, the CSCS hosted a Leadership Presenta on in our church hall. Stan Majowski led a session on building on Lead‐ership skills, and the presenta on was a ended by a varied age group in our community. Discus‐sions ranged from leadership skills on various leaders, including an interes ng presenta on about Ernest Shackleton and his Antarc‐

c Expedi on. We hope to have more sessions like these in the future.

KOLINE! On February 4th, 2017, the CSCS was proud to put on a Koline Sausage Making event. This event was a mas‐sive success and 3 different delicious sausages were made: meat, blood and white. On February 5th, the CSCS sold these sausages to our members, who enjoyed them so much, they came back the next week asking if we had any more. This event would not have been successful if it was not for Daniel Kozicki and Luke Majowski who ran this event and a big thank you goes out to them. Hopefully the CSCS can run another Koline next year.

FOLKORAMA 2016 Hello! I first off would like to thank everyone who volun‐teered, this could not have happened without you, and you all made this the most financially successful year we have ever had.!

The kitchen staff worked countless hours throughout the week making sure there was always food for our customers and volunteers.

the BBQ crew roasted pigs and chickens during the mornings and a ernoons, always cooking them to perfec on, and the cu ers always had pork and chicken ready for 6 o'clock.

The door crew was fantas c with direc ng guests and making sure the line moved fast.

Our dance groups who prac ce almost year‐round once again represented us as one of the best Slovenijan groups in Canada.

Our fantas c cultural display, which is always set up so perfectly and so factually accurate.

Our pastries, which always taste fantas c, and for which people would come back just to buy a piece of cake or strudel.

Mark Lebar, with his fantas c opening, informing the people about Slovenija, and who I’ve been told was one of the best emcees by people vis‐i ng, with which I agree.

Mark Fewster, who did a great job with the soundboard behind the scenes.

Our ambassadors who did a fantas c job. A fel‐low co‐ordinator asked me at one point if they could steal our two youth ambassadors, Taylor and Jared, for their pavilion next year, because they were so knowledgeable about Slovenija and so polite and professional!

Sabrina Simonic did another fantas c job with social media leading up to Folklorama, as well as during with Instagram, Twi er, and Facebook. She did a fantas c job taking pictures through‐out the week and showing the world what we’re all about.

Our Slovenija Secret Service, who did another fantas c job making sure our pavilion was al‐ways clean.

Our bar staff, the bar was always stocked with cold drinks and the bar staff was always so friendly to the customers.

I would also like to thank the heads of the depart‐ments at Folklorama this year. It was such a pleas‐ure to work with you all. I would especially like to thank the heads of the departments for all their dedica on throughout the week. Alenka in the kitchen, Kris na Majowski as entertainment, Sabri‐na as social media, Mark Lebar as our emcee for the week, Syrena Terry for se ng up the cultural dis‐play, Marc Schuster as head of security. Stefan Geric with the BBQ, Pauline with the pastries, our 4 am‐bassadors Daniel, Ma , Taylor, and Jared. Evan, who did a really great job with the door, always making sure we had ckets and guide books, and finally Stan Majowski with the bar and helping me along as co‐co‐ordinator. This was a unique experience for me as well as gra ‐fying one. I feel much be er connected to the com‐munity as the rela onships I’ve made during my term as co‐ordinator of the pavilion. I find that my problem‐solving skills were extremely tested and improved upon while working with Folklorama. Adam Majowski, Folklorama Co‐ordinator, Slovenija Pavilion, 2016

KIDS CAMP!  The youth of the community took part in a 'Slovenian Camp' on July 16th, 2016 at the picnic grounds. The event received rave reviews from the a endees as well as their parents! The event ran from 9:00am to 7:00pm and the nice weather held out for the most part! The youth aged 2‐12 had a full day of ac vi es to connect them to their culture and their friends! The 8 a endees started the day in high spirits, jumping in the inflatable course and sliding on the Slip & Slide. They par cipated in a Slovenian Amazing Race created by Director of Youth, Myranda Terry. The race took them to vari‐ous regions of Slovenija: Bela Krajina and Prekmurje to name a few! They took part in cultural ac vi es related to the region including wearing face masks, represen ng the spas in Stajerska and finding the "human fish" in Notrajnska. They painted beehive panels to reflect their Slovenian heritage and decorated Medenjaki just for fun! The par cipants were put onto 2 teams and completed an obstacle course that proved to be quite difficult! A special thank you to Syrena and Rybecca Terry and Vanessa Simonic for helping the day of the event. Based on the feedback the CSCS received, we will be hos ng another Kids Camp this year! The event will take place Saturday July 15th from 11:00am to 6:00pm. Meals and snacks are provided as well as a Slovenian cultural experience and las ng memories!

TRIVIA NIGHT!

The call for trivia buffs was put out and over 40 people answered! The CSCS hosted a Trivia night Friday, March 17th and it was great fun! Members of our community were joined by their friends in a friendly but compe ve environment. Team names included "There will be Bled" and Let's get Quizical". Organizers Marty and Myranda Terry incorporated many mental brain teasers and a few physical tasks to keep the par cipants on their toes! From geography and spelling, to movies and music, the trivia included it all! Par cipants enjoyed the drinks and snacks provided, and had many posi ve things to say about the event! There were mul ple door prizes given away as well as a "guess how many candies are in the jar" game. The winner luckily did not send us her den sts bill. Marty and Myranda will be looking to organize another Trivia night soon!

Swipe, Like, Comment, Repeat – The New Way of Connec ng in a Digital World

Since the beginnings of our pres‐ence on social media, the CSCS has received lots of great response both digitally and in person. Earlier this year, a few of our members requested a social media work‐shop, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to share my background and knowledge on the topic, as well as connec ng mem‐bers to our social media pla orms, teaching them how to connect in today’s digital landscape, and of course, building the CSCS’s digital audience.

Social Media 101 was held at Booth University College on the evening of Monday, May 15th. The work‐shop was organized in a way that

would cover all four main social media pla orms – Facebook, Twi er, Instagram, and Snapchat. I also decided to include a topic on Privacy and Social Media since this was a topic of concern among par‐ents.

What was supposed to be an hour and a half workshop turned into a two hour and forty‐five minute presenta on! The seven par ci‐pants in the room showed such interest, curiosity, enthusiasm, and a real keenness for learning all they possibly could about social media; each par cipant followed along on their own devices and took notes. They weren’t shy to ask ques ons, especially when it came to stopping the presenta on midway to come look at their social media profiles and any issues they were having. By the end of the night, everyone
