ST.
PATRICKS
DAY!
WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHY
Arrowwood Board and Staff would like to send our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of longtime member Blondeen Munson who passed away on Saturday, January 25th, 2014. Her Daughter, the Rev. Christina Dennis was a former member and her two daugh-ters; Tiffany and Tashia, who are both members. Blondeen leaves us with a lega-cy of caring for others; as a great advocate for the poor, for human rights, a sports enthusiast and the best political analyst for helping us all make an informed vote. She will be greatly missed.

Northside K-8 STEAM Infusion School
The results of Listen & Learn pointed to a significant de-mand for more K-8 and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) programming options in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. In reviewing the success of current lottery options in AAPS, the addition of another K-8 school with a focus on the integration of STEAM program-ming will enrich learning opportunities for Ann Arbor Public Schools students. The program will support the development of foundational skills needed in STEAM Careers including analytical skills, problem solv-ing, attention to detail, technical skills, communications and collaboration, creative abilities, leadership and organiza-tional skills. In addition to meeting global work place de-mands, this focus also meets new Common Core State Standards expectations.
Anticipated benefits include:
Attract and retain Ann Arbor students within the AAPS
system
Increased student achievement as measured by next
generation assessments
Increased student engagement through high-interest,
hands-on, project-based learning
Meet global standards through collaboration and
Integration
Utilize full building capacity via first option for
Northside boundary families and lottery for students choos-ing from beyond Northside attendance area
Realize the STEAM vision through robust curriculum and
after school enrichment
Feature 1:1 technology for all students enrolled at this
school
Considerations:
Establish technology levels appropriate for 1:1 compu-
ting funded through the Technology Bond
May attract students to remain in AAPS, particularly at
6th grade
Provides another choice option for families in an area in
need of enrollment infusion
Positions AAPS to rise with 21st century learning de-
mands
Possible draw of some enrollment from other AAPS ele-
Continued…
Expected Budget Impact:
Potential to increase the utilization of Northside school from current enrollment (185) with capacity for approxi-
mately 500 – 550 students
Technology provided from the Tech Bond
STEAM curriculum materials is a need
STEAM Staff training, beginning spring/summer, 2014
Starting September 2014, Northside School will be reopened as a K-8 STEAM Infusion school.
The K-8 STEAM Innovation at Northside will open with grades K through 6 for Fall 2014-15. Adding a grade level each year following; offering grades K-7 in 2015-2016 and grades K-8 in 2016-2017.
The content will be taught through Guiding Essential Questions. This inquiry-based problem solving ap-proach integrates science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics using processes such as de-signing experiments, asking questions, developing ideas, and models to solve everyday problems. Differ-ent instructional methodologies including co-teaching, co-planning, multi age groupings and technology tools will be utilized to provide students with personalized learning paths. Units will be designed to foster curiosi-ty, inquiry, and discovery within the curriculum
foundations. The fundamental skills taught through the STEAM
design process prepare students to utilize critical thinking skills, analyze, experiment, collaborate, com-municate and apply knowledge to solve real world problems.
The STEAM K-8 will integrate on Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, ISTE Technology Standards for Students, Engineering De-sign Process and National Coalition for Core Arts Standards into the Ann Arbor Curriculum.
Any AAPS student who lives within the Northside attendance area, in grades K through 6 in September
2014 is eligible to enroll.
The district will post an application for AAPS students to apply for the remaining seats through a lottery
draw.

Water Alert
To avoid waste and help keep monthly fees affordable, please check your water pipes, faucets and toilets to ELIMINATE any dripping or run-on situations. If you need maintenance help to stop and/or fix a drip or leak, please call the office immediately and schedule a work order.
Why Fix the Drip? Consider the fact that a leaky faucet can waste up to 74 gallons a day -
and a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons a day. Each person uses about 100 gallons of water a day. Consumption has risen 200 percent
since 1950 making all communities struggle with increasing costs. Top Ten Water Conservation Tips 1. Low-flow devices at faucets decrease use by 50%. 2. Low-flow (and dual flush) toilets use 40% less water. 3. Shut water OFF (or use bowls or buckets) instead of letting it RUN while doing work that needs intermittent water, e.g., washing dishes, thawing foods, scrubbing vegetables, cleaning. 4. For drinking water, keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the faucet until it gets cold (or turbidity clears). 5. Wash your car at the car wash (especially one that recycles its water). 6. Fix drips (as above), since one dripping faucet wastes more in a day than one person can drinks in a week. 7. Run full loads (not partials) in any dishwasher or washing machine. 8. Sweep sidewalks rather than rinsing them with the hose. 9. Save rainwater for outdoor plants and watering. 10. Use a glass of water for brushing teeth, instead of just letting the water run.
Promote water conservation and help control the largest item in YOUR Co-op’s budget. If your building scored red we will be conducting an inspection in your home this spring. Thank you, AHC Property Management Team
