Oldest member

Gurnie Stancil Crabtree is our oldest family member. She will be 96 on Oct. 27. Gurnie, daughter of Allie Edwards and James Oscar Stan-cil, was born in her Grandpa Henry’s tenant house.

She was only 5 when her mama died of T.B.

Gurnie credits Mama Mamie, Oscar’s second wife, with providing her with a sound Christian founda-tion. Gurnie joined Center Ridge Presbyterian Church when she was 7. She recalled going to Uncle George’s on syrup making days and eating the crystallized syrup.

Her duties included milking “Lil” and bringing in sweet potatoes from the potato hill.

Gurnie Crabtree

Garland turns 91George Garland is the youngest child

of Bertha and Harvey Arthur Stancil. He was born June 6, 1918.

Garland recalled that his pa gave him a Holstein steer raised from a milk cow when he was 12. Garland named him “Boss.” Garland trained him using one line. Garland planted corn with him and hauled wood that his pa and older brother Carl cut. Garland rode him down the dirt road about 1 ½ miles to Mr. James Woodard’s store. Garland tied him out front and bought some penny candy. Eventually Harvey sold “Boss” for $50 to a farmer who needed an animal for farming.
