Volume 4 Issue 4 August 2019_____ Probus Club of Clarington _________________________________________________________________________________________________ From our President After a very wet and cool May and June, summer finally arrived in July. The sun has broken through the clouds and the temperatures have been in the high 20’s to low 30’s, which is normal for this time of the year. Given the high water levels, rain and flooding in spring, I never thought I would be saying we could use a little rain as things are starting to get very dry. While some of our Interest Groups are in summer recess, several other activities that are more focused on summer such as hiking, Urban Walking and golf are in full swing. I can speak personally to the golfing which has been very well attended this year. You don’t have to be a good golfer - in fact most of us do not keep score, which gives us all bragging rights to victory as nobody can prove otherwise. It is every Tuesday morning at Stonehenge Golf Course, which is a 9-hole course. Our golfers get a little exercise, share a good laugh, have a lot of fun and yes, sometimes even get the ball in the hole. After the big game, we share a burger where each of us gets the opportunity to share (exaggerate, stretch the truth) on how well we played. Of course, I never do this. Unfortunately, a few of our Club members did not renew for 2019, primarily due to health or other personal circumstances, or because they have moved. However, every month we have new members joining and I am pleased to report that our Club is healthy, vibrant and growing. Our Social Committee is very active and adding new and exciting social venues to the list every month. There is something for everyone to enjoy. The car rally in the fall is one of the most popular events of the year and sells out very early. Although I understand that again this year we are sold out, if you see Stella or any member of her merry band of volunteers, I believe there still may be an opportunity to get you on the list. Our July meeting held at Family Worship & Outreach Centre was a great success, with many in attendance. I would like to thank Pastor Steve Sparling who welcomed us with such joy and warmth. We celebrated a belated Canada Day with almost everyone wearing Red and White. We did a Canada Trivia with many fantastic and valued prizes awarded. Whatever your plans over the next few weeks, have a joyful, safe and happy summer. Jim Bamford

From our President

After a very wet and cool May and June, summer finally arrived in July. The sun has broken

through the clouds and the temperatures have been in the high 20’s to low 30’s, which is normal for

this time of the year. Given the high water levels, rain and flooding in spring, I never thought I

would be saying we could use a little rain as things are starting to get very dry.

While some of our Interest Groups are in summer recess, several other activities that are more

focused on summer such as hiking, Urban Walking and golf are in full swing. I can speak

personally to the golfing which has been very well attended this year. You don’t have to be a good

golfer - in fact most of us do not keep score, which gives us all bragging rights to victory as nobody

can prove otherwise. It is every Tuesday morning at Stonehenge Golf Course, which is a 9-hole

course. Our golfers get a little exercise, share a good laugh, have a lot of fun and yes, sometimes

even get the ball in the hole. After the big game, we share a burger where each of us gets the

opportunity to share (exaggerate, stretch the truth) on how well we played. Of course, I never do

this.

Unfortunately, a few of our Club members did not renew for 2019, primarily due to health or other

personal circumstances, or because they have moved. However, every month we have new

members joining and I am pleased to report that our Club is healthy, vibrant and growing.

Our Social Committee is very active and adding new and exciting social venues to the list every

month. There is something for everyone to enjoy. The car rally in the fall is one of the most popular

events of the year and sells out very early. Although I understand that again this year we are sold

out, if you see Stella or any member of her merry band of volunteers, I believe there still may be an

opportunity to get you on the list.

Our July meeting held at Family Worship & Outreach Centre was a great success, with many in

attendance. I would like to thank Pastor Steve Sparling who welcomed us with such joy and

warmth. We celebrated a belated Canada Day with almost everyone wearing Red and White. We

did a Canada Trivia with many fantastic and valued prizes awarded.

Whatever your plans over the next few weeks,

have a joyful, safe and happy summer.

Introducing our Speaker for August: Darlene Brown

Darlene Brown has been the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big

Sisters of Clarington since 2007. She is a Bowmanville resident and the

mother of two very active boys. Darlene holds an honors Bachelor of Arts

degree in Child Studies/Psychology from Brock University and has

completed course work in Business Administration through York

University and Counselling courses at Durham College. Darlene firmly

believes that children are the future of our community and that by

changing the course of young lives we can in turn be changing the course

of our community’s Future. She believes that by opening a child’s eyes to

what is could open their minds to what could be. Over the last 12 years

Darlene has worked tirelessly to help ensure that BBBS Clarington

continues to grow and thrive, helping to pull the organization through

some very difficult economic times. Darlene and her team have had a

significant positive impact on hundreds of Clarington children and families as their work to adapt

dynamic national programs to meet local community needs has resulted in an annual increase of

children served, year after year.

Second time’s a charm…After being rained out the first time, the group who attended Model “A”

Acres had a lovely visit to this local attraction.

Interest Groups:

Interest groups are busy getting together through this lovely summer.

Our New Choir held its first meeting at Alvina Hare’s home. Fifteen members have signed up to

hopefully entertain us in the future. The members were very enthusiastic, and came-up with some

terrific ideas to kick off this terrific Interest Group. We are still hoping for someone to join with

some instrumental ability to accompany this group.

Premiere Crew (Wine Club) took a break for July but we are looking forward-to a great night at

Laurie Allums where we will be sampling “Wines found while Vacationing”.

Other Interest Groups that-have been active through summer are Hiking, Urban Walking, Golf,

Garden Chat, Fibre Arts and Quilting.

Please stop by the “Interest Group” table at next meeting to find out more.
