First Day of Term 4 - Student Free DayThe School Council has approved a Student Free Day for the first Monday of Term 4 October 12. Staff will be undertaking training focusing on Student Ownership of Learning. Please remember the first day for student attendance will be Tuesday October 13.

Presentation NightPlease join us on Presentation Night to celebrate the graduation of our Year 6 and Year 12 students as well as acknowledge the students who have achieved across the range of academic, social, sporting and leadership fields.

The 2020 Presentation Night will be held on Friday November 20. We have moved to a Friday night to accommodate the Year 12 Formal that was postponed and will

now be held on Thursday the November 19 at Mount Lofty Summit. Due to COVID restrictions this will be a ticketed event controling the number of audience members that can attend. This shouldn’t be too restrictive as, following requirements, we can fit 184 adults in the Hall. More details on how to book will be distributed early next term. Additionally, we are investigating the live-streaming of the event, so if we sell out you will be able to view it from your lounge chair. More details to follow.

FacilitiesEvery time I walk into the yard there seems to be another set of trades working on our facilities! Currently this includes finalising the courtyard in front of Home Economics and upgrade of the Whimpress toilets. Next week work begins on replacing the Whimpress roof which should be completed before Term 4 starts.

Next Term some of the buildings that HCCS are occupying will be demolished and then the front driveway will have new curbing and asphalt installed which will extend through the Christmas holidays.

Please be assured safety considerations are the school’s top priority and contractors are experienced in maintaining the safety of the students. Equally we are minimising interruptions to learning during these works.

Migration Museum & Democracy Walk

HASS

Students discovered plaques and sculptures that highlight some of the key people and events that shaped the development of democracy in South Australia.

They engaged in ‘unpacking histories’ at the migration museum and were able to work as historians and curators with real evidence to examine, research and record the lives of several South Australians and their 20th and 21st century immigration stories.

Kat Thompson

On Thursday September 10 students in year 7 were taken on an excursion led by Kat Thompson and Sam Nicholson to the Migration Museum and Democracy Walk in Adelaide.

The Native Orchid Society of South Australia (NOSSA) and ForestrySA provided a select group of students from years 8-11 a wonderful opportunity to learn about plant science during a field trip to Mount Crawford Forest Reserve.

Students learnt how to identify some common and endangered orchids out in the field and also use the Wild Orchid Watch app on their phones.

Despite the rainy day, students enjoyed the opportunity to be out of the classroom learning about bush ecology.

We want to thank NOSSA and FSA for sponsoring the bus and providing OAS students with this unique opportunity.

Two Adelaide University students attended Oakbank to inspire our year 8s! The Future of STEM workshop focused on the important skills needed for STEM jobs.

The years 8s learnt how STEM graduates are working to overcome global challenges, solve real-world problems and develop solutions for the future. Scientists have even developed a way to transform a spinach leaf into beating human heart tissue.

We hope that the year 8s are inspired to investigate the possibilities that STEM can give them.

Chess Tournament

Sports

In this rapid style competition of seven rounds, one Oakbank student (Marlowe Jones) finished equal first winning 6 out of 7 rounds and placed second overall (due to count-back). Asher Oldfield was successful in 5 out of 7 games while all four students were able to walk away with a win, an exceptional result.

This marks the first time Oakbank has competed in this Chess competition and I am very proud of our students and how they represented our school as they enthusiastically introduced themselves to new faces from various schools. They each showed patience, strategic and creative thinking as well as calmness under pressure.

This year Oakbank students have been encouraged to come along to Chess Club held every Wednesday and run by educator Kat Thompson during lunchtime in the library. Playing chess provides students with an exciting opportunity to problem solve, strategise and meet like-minded people. The community and school spirit displayed by Oakbank students allowed everyone present to have a fantastic and memorable time.

On Thursday, 17th of September, four Oakbank students successfully participated in a Chess tournament at Norton Summit Primary School. Year 7 Marlowe Jones and Charlie Hubbert along with Year 4 Asher Oldfield and Reece Le Couter competed against students from Norton Summit PS, Basket Range PS, Uraidla PS, Lobethal PS, and Lenswood PS.

On Wednesday September 2, our open boys basketball team faced off against Mount Barker High School and Birdwood in a local competition played at our home court. It was fantastic to see how well the team came together with boys ranging from years 8-12, showing excellent sportsmanship and team bonding. Some students had not played basketball competitively before and whilst we did not win, we came remarkably close only losing to Birdwood by 11 points. I was extremely impressed with the attitude of each player and their determination to practice and improve their game. The players included year 12’s Jett Sinnott, Jaz Scott, and Corey King. The year 11’s includes: Luqman Mohd Yusof, Karl Ballon. Year 10, Oscar Smith, Year 9 Jesse Mackowiack and Year 8s, Ryan Taskas and Isaac Pretious. Coach: Kat Thompson

We now look forward to a game against Urrbrae Agricultural High School on September 23 and further competitions with the 8/9 team next term.

On Thursday August 6, our Open Girls Volleyball team faced off against competing schools at Marden (Mars Stadium). Guided by their coach Kat Thompson and assisted by the open girl’s formidable captain Sharice Potter, the day was met with some success. Most players were newcomers to the sport, so our shared goal was to develop our skills in preparation for the tournament. They trained hard, twice a week and sometimes after school to improve their skills within a three-week period.

We won our first match against Cornerstone Collage and were looking strong heading into the second game. We made it to the finals round but had to pull out due to injuries. The girls played against schools that have been competing together since year 8 and were able challenge themselves and show resilience. Despite the loss we were clearly a better team as we had less mistakes and played our hearts out.

BYOD Options

BYOD Handbook

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) refers to technology models where students bring a

personally-owned device to school for the purpose of learning. Our BYOD model is a

“light-touch” or “open” model where students are able to access the school’s wireless

network with their personal devices (laptops and tablets) during the school day (with

classroom teacher approval) allowing students to access our Learning Management

System, filtered internet, printing and to collaborate with others.

Oakbank Area School is committed to moving

students forward in a contemporary learning

environment and many families have already

chosen this option for their child. Having a

BYOD program enables OAS to create a

sustainable way for the school to have every

student with access to a device.

A device in the hands of every student

extends and enriches learning by:

• Shifting instruction towards student

centred learning, where inquiry and

authentic learning are emphasized.

• Focusing on contemporary leaning,

including critical and creative thinking,

collaboration, communication, self-

direction, global and cultural

awareness.

• Using online learning tools and digital

content.

• Increasing student engagement through

ICT.

• Creating learning opportunities;

anytime, anywhere.

From 2020, our existing optional BYOD model for

Years 7-12 will be expanded, with all year 8s

being asked to have a BYOD laptop in class by

Term 3 2020. This will extend into Year 9 in 2021

and onwards. The BYOD program continues to be

open to all year levels from Year 7 onwards to

participate.

If a student does not already own a suitable

electronic device, there are two* options

available:

1. Recommended Laptops

Choose from two selected laptop models

that meet school requirements.

www.hpshopping.com.au/oakbankbyod

2. Supply your own BYOD laptop

Bring an existing laptop or source your

own.

Principal’s Laptop Access Scheme

In exceptional circumstances, should you have

financial impediments to accessing a laptop for

your child, please enquire with the Principal

about applying for our Principal’s Laptop Access

Scheme, where a laptop may be provided during

school times for limited numbers of students.

Having a Bring Your Own Device program enables Oakbank Area School to create a sustainable way for the school to have every student with access to a device. OAS is committed to moving students forward in a contemporary learning environment and many families have already chosen this option for their child.

Option for Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) (Highly Recommended) Accidental damage is defined as physical damage to a product caused by or resulting from a sudden and unforeseen incident, provided such damage occurs in the course of regular use. Cover includes liquid spills in or on the unit, drops, falls, and electrical surges, as well as damaged or broken LCDs and broken parts. We highly recommend taking out the accidental Damage Protection (ADP) option. This cost is approximately one-third of the cost of a screen replacement (including labour) on some models.

ADP is limited to 3 claims over 3 years. There is a $0 excess fee per claim. Upon complete product replacement, ADP agreement terminates. Purchaser can buy ADP cover again that will align to warranty expiry.

HP ADP Product Disclosure Statement www.hp.com.au/carepack/pds.

Making a warranty or ADP claim The School’s ICT Services will be the first point of contact for any issues (Warranty or ADP) so they can be assessed and logged as soon as possible. Parents may also log warranty jobs directly with HP. Repairs will be performed onsite by HP Technicians – no need to wait at home or travel to a repairer.
