AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS TRUST MATHEMATICS CHALLENGEMichael Nokes, Mathematics CoordinatorOver the past four weeks, a group of 26 students from Year 7 to Year 10 have been participating in the Mathematics Challenge. The challenge has required the students to work on a series of six questions, all of which require a significant amount of investigating and problem solving as they explore completely new mathematical ideas. The College is very excited to have so many students competing in the challenge this year. The introduction of Maths Pathway as a teaching strategy in Year 8 and Year 9 has enabled us to identify which students are advanced in their progression through the Australian Curriculum, and offer them this engaging enrichment opportunity.Over the next week teachers at Faith will be marking the student answers and sending off the results to the Australian Mathematics Trust in Canberra.

YEAR 11 BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISEThis Semester 8 businesses traded for Mother’s Day and a College Market Day. Brownilicious and Studded also visited the ELC and Junior Campus to sell their products and produce for Special Persons Day.

BUSINESSES INCLUDED Studded – handmade clay studded earrings Wholehearted – fruit cups, cookies, juicesOh Honey – Wax lunch wrapsBreezie – Car Air DiffusersBrownilicious – Homemade BrowniesChocolate Overdose – Homemade gourmet chocolatesLippi – Handmade beeswax lip balmsC’est la vie – handmade beaded lanyards

The combined total profit of $1053 was donated to Faith College Science teacher Jess Roberts who is currently on sick leave.

In speaking with students, clever planning & pre-sales from ‘Oh Honey’ Wax lunch wraps & ‘C’ est la vie’ handmade beaded lanyards was the key to ensuring supply versus demand was considered to maximise return and minimise wastage. Another element which led to success was following a passion for their business. ‘Oh Honey’ students Jemma Linke and Kyah Cornish retold how they decided to choose an on-trend product that met their criteria of being environmentally friendly. Fabrics were purchased from the op shop & dipped in wax, jojoba and pine resin to create the reusable food wraps which sold out very quickly.

Students Dana Kalleske and Brooke Friebel of C’est la vie capitalised on their existing College and family audience by running a survey to ensure their products would sell. Brady Griffiths and Hannah Eagland did all their research on Facebook, Instagram and used YouTube for a step-by-step guide on how to make car air diffusers with essential oils, but came up against some challenges when not all of their on-line ordered materials arrived. Casey Miles and Georgie Carter of Wholehearted rose early on the morning of the market and made fresh juices to accompany the cookies & fruit cup.

‘Thank you to all staff, students and parents who supported these young entrepreneurs. An activity of this type gives real-world learning skills and highlights the intensity and relentless nature of running a business and the difficulties associated with operating a partnership,’ Judy Minge exclaimed.

OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL Coaches, Mr Schmidt and Mr Clarke

ROUND 2

On Tuesday 11th June the Open Boys Football team played Cabra College in the Round 2 of the Pool A Secondary Schools Knockout Football competition.

The weather was picture perfect as the teams lined up at our “home” ground, Tanunda Oval. Faith were up and running early and kept the ball in their forward half for the majority of the first quarter. Cabra’s best chance of scoring occurred when they cleared the defenders and had players running into space. However, an outstanding chase and tackle by Will Parker prevented a certain goal. Some wayward kicking did not allow the team to capitalise on their dominance, with the quarter time score sitting at Faith 2.7 to Cabra 0 0.

In the second quarter Cabra lifted. Faith’s backline worked tirelessly to reduce the damage on the scoreboard and the team managed to add a couple of late goals to go to half time with the score at Faith 4.11 to Cabra 2.2.

The third quarter started in a similar fashion to the second, with Cabra pushing hard and Faith missing some opportunities in front of goal. However, an amazing 10 minutes of play by on baller Sam Nicholls blew the game apart. First he kicked the clear ‘goal of the day’, winning the ball on the half forward line, running around 3 opponents and them putting the ball through the goals on the run from the boundary line. He went on to kick 2 more goals in the quarter, to see Faith lead 8.16 to Cabra 5.3 at the three quarter time break.

This spurred the team on and they went on in the final quarter to finish the game in comfortable fashion. The highlight for this quarter was a high flying mark by Jacob Fiebiger in the middle of the ground. Whilst the team missed a lot of shots on goal, the work rate from all players was outstanding, with everyone playing their role in the win.

The midfield was again given exceptional service by Ruckman and Vice-Captain Todd Falkenberg. He was supported well by Jed Habermann, who moved into the ruck at times across the game. Jacob Fiebiger and Max Roocke won a huge amount of the ball through the middle, Benson Heintze set the tone early in the game with his attack on the ball and forward Brady Griffiths led up the ground well took some strong marks.

There are a few people to thank for their role in making the day a success:

- The parents/caregivers and past students who came and gave the team some support.

- Those that assisted with the timekeeping and goal umpiring duties.

- Our officiating umpires, past students James Mattiske and Liam Birchard, who both did an excellent job in their roles.

- The Barossa Council and the Tanunda Football Club for their generosity in making their facilities available to us.

The team now moves on the play Henley High School in Round 3 in Week 8.

Final Score:Faith 11.17 defeated Cabra 7.4

Best Players: Jacob Fiebiger, Sam Nicholls, Max Roocke, Benson Heintze, Brady Griffiths, Todd Falkenberg

Goal Kickers: Sam Nicholls 4, Brady Griffiths 3, Ben Parkinson 2, Jayden Birchard 1, Max Roocke 1

OPEN GIRLS AND OPEN BOYS SOCCERMichael Knowles (Boys Coach), Kirsty Rosenzweig (Girls Team Manager)

It was a case of four seasons in one day for Round 1 of Knock Out soccer for our Open Girls And Open Boys teams on Friday 14th June.

Both teams faced Nuriootpa High School under clear blue skies with a light breeze. BOYS ROUND 1 The boys’ team made up of predominantly Year 9 and 10 boys and led by Josh Lambert and Ben Osborne, played well with many in the team more at home aiming between upright posts. Nicholas Travers scored in the first half but Shay Linke was kept busy in goals. GIRLS ROUND 1 The girls’ team had a number of players who have played for the College over the previous four years or who play for the local club on the weekends. On the second pitch, the girls played a tightly contested game that looked to be headed into extra time. With less than 2 minutes of normal time remaining, Ebony Triandafyllidis was awarded a penalty shot and the Faith girls won the game 1:0.

BOYS ROUND 2 The second games of the day, against Glossop High School, saw the breeze pick up and clouds gather before a downpour just before half time and then mottled sunshine. Benjamin Slade wore the goalie gloves and showed grit and determination, but the comparatively experienced Glossop side was hard to beat, particularly with the benefit of an extended break between matches. GIRLS ROUND 2The girls found their second wind just before half time in the second match but went into the break 3 goals down to Glossop. Stephanie Mifflin handed her goalie gloves down to younger sister Kennedy for the second half. The girls had a couple of shots at goals before Ebony Triandafyllidis put one in, but unfortunately the Glossop girls took the match 4:1.

The combined team effort was rather a family affair of players and supporting roles - Campbell and Mackenzie Noack, with grandfather Allan Daddow driving the bus, Ethan and Georgia Battersby, Ben and Matilda Osborne, Steph and Kennedy Mifflin making up the siblings contingent. Special thanks to the parents who contributed to the day, Ricki Lambert for running lines and George Triandafyllidis for coaching the girls over the past weeks.

YLEAD ALTITUDE DAYJoel Darling, Year 9 Wellbeing LeaderOn Thursday the 6th of June, five of Faith’s Year 9 students departed early for ‘Altitude Day’, run by the YLead organisation at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The purpose of the day was to develop the students understanding of leadership so they may apply and share their knowledge and skills with the rest of their year level.Students involved were Jaide Ottawa, Benjamin Slade, Bethany Rosenboom, Harry Robinson and Jake Noble. Altitude Day involved over three hundred students from right across the state, and is delivered to thousands more nationally over the course of two weeks. Throughout the course of the day, the students were challenged to mix with those from other schools, participating in a variety of activities designed to develop their confidence in meeting and working with new people. They also heard from three inspirational leaders, each of whom shared their personal stories of hardship, passion to achieve and a key message for the students. This years’ speakers were Jamie Moore, Ben Pettingill and Rowie McEvoy.Together with YLead CEO and host for the day, Belinda Yorston, the speakers explored the five keys to unlocking potential:1. Discover your passion2. Challenge yourself3. Recruit mentors4. Take action5. Champion mindsetThe students’ challenge is now to relay the most valuable aspects of the day to the rest of the Year Level through their leadership generally and in a future Year 9 Year Level Meeting.I thank the students for their commitment to engage fully with the day and represent the College in an outstanding manner.

What songs do you remember from your childhood?

If you went to a Lutheran primary school, you may remember the tune 'This little light of mine'...

On the 11th June our Middle & Senior Campus were blessed to have the Year 1 student’s lead chapel. It was a lovely trip down memory lane for many senior students who were encouraged to sing along and join in the actions. Our Year 1 students certainly let their light shine on stage as they shared their message with enthusiasm and confidence.

LIVEABILITY STUDYThe Year 7 students have recently been inquiring into liveability. After generating questions about what makes a place ‘liveable’ the students went on a fieldtrips to gather their data, 7S and 7B went Angaston and 7H and 7J to Tanunda. On return the students presented and compared data to ascertain which town they thought was best. You’ll have to ask them which town won!

GARDEN GRUBSAs part of Year 7 electives, recently our Garden Grubs visited the Barossa Bush Gardens in Nuriootpa. The purpose of the visit was to experience a different garden setting from the herb and vegetable garden they had been growing, and to learn about native plants and the ecosystems that support them. Everyone competed in a game which encouraged us to explore different aspects of the gardens. It was a fun morning out!

Directed by Lucy RackhamWritten by Lindsey Price Music by Frank Cammans Special thanks to Ron Lovell, Matthew Kleemann, Michael Hill, Ben Schwarz On Tuesday the 11th of June, the Year 10 Drama class immersed their audience into a whirlwind of challenges that teenagers face during their time at high school. The production discussed the notion that every human is born into a box. An environment in which they are pressured to choose various paths by forces much larger than their being. As a class, we challenged this idea. We discussed the difficulties of being a teenager and how we could escape and break down the four walls in which we live. To grow, to be courageous and to live a life we have chosen. The students delivered a passionate, thought provoking and heart-felt performance. The audience laughed, cried and were uplifted by the true stories told by the students. It was a pleasure to have such a hard-working class and support from all parents.

Performers: Emma Ames, Cherie Anderson, Holly Bell, Jack Braunack, Zara Horne, Bella Lehmann, Riley Leno, Leah Morgan, Zoe Schulz, Rebekah Stutley, Brianna Teehan, Bronte Ward and Bethany Wood

Helping keep children safe through new screening laws

Stronger, more effective and transparent screening laws for people working or volunteering with children have been introduced in South Australia.

The new screening laws were recommended as part of federal and South Australian royal commissions, to help keep children safe in our communities.

From 1 July 2019, the state’s current system for child-related employment screening will be replaced with a working with children check (WWCC).

The new laws mean that, from 1 July 2019, everyone working or volunteering with children must have avalid child-related check.

Under the new scheme, people can apply for a WWCC themselves, as opposed to the previous system where organisations had to initiate screening applications.

This means people looking to enter child-related work industries can be work-ready.

A WWCC is valid for five years and is portable across roles and organisations throughout South Australia.

Current, valid child-related employment screening checks done by DHS/DCSI will be recognised as a WWCC until they expire.

There will be a 12 month transition period for most people affected by the new laws – such as those people with a National Police Certificate assessed by their organisation – to allow them to enter the new WWCC scheme smoothly.

For most people, this means they don’t need to do anything to be ready for the new law starting on 1 July 2019.

For more information, visit the DHS Screening website screening.sa.gov.au/wwcc.
