POTENATE’S MESSAGEI realize that to those who were at the Potentate’s Ball, this will sound very familiar, so please bear with me. However, it is very important to me to pass this message on to as many of our members as possible, “it is a huge honour and privilege for me to be elected as the Potentate for Al Shamal for this upcoming year and I thank you for your support.”

I want to also thank, Illustrious Sir Doug Sharkey for having the con dence to nominate me for the Oriental Guide position and especially Illustrious Sir Doug Grant for nominating me the past four years. He has continued to be of tremendous assistance by being the Master of Ceremonies for the Potentate’s Ball and the Installation of Divan Of cers for their respective positions in 2016.

I want to thank my Unit, the Directors Staff for their continued support and also for hosting the Chief Rabban’s Night. I believe Al Shamal does the nicest “Necrology Service” and I thank the Arab Patrol for their ne job as usual. The Provost Corps were of great assistance during the AGM and also by escorting the Widows in the Necrology Service. It that was not enough - they escorted in the head table guests along with myself and my lady Verna for the ball -- many thanks!

Although Lady Diana Nesdoly is holidaying in Yuma, I very much appreciated what she and her other helpers did in giving a feminine touch to the the banquet hall decorations.

In regards to business - we have some important positions that need to be lled: the Oriental Guide, the Public Relations and Promotion Chair, the Membership Chair and also the Golf Tournament Chair.

My thanks to the many Nobles for allowing their names to stand for all the appointed positions and the Potentate’s Aids.

Again, my congratulations to the returning Divan members and our newly elected Recorder. I hope even though Alberta’s economic situation is suffering that we will prevail and have a successful, prosperous and most important, a fun lled year!

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGSNobles, having been elected to the position of recorder, I sincerely thank you all for the trust placed in me.

Now learning how Al Shamal works is a steep learning curve as there is much more to this position than a mere recorder. I offer my grateful thanks to Walter Bouillon and Bob Thachuk for all their assistance in showing me the working of Al Shamal. To begin with, there are many corners of our building where there are unwanted items, Nobles and Ladies this is your club, your home, your building - please treat it as such, if you see something that is not working report it so we can take the appropriate action.

Communication is something we talk about in Masonic lodges and today we have many methods of communication; yet we still have a hard time passing along the simplest of messages. It is time for us all as Shriners, Masons and Ladies to work together for the betterment of our temples and lodges, and for the future of our Fraternity and Philanthropy.

Sometimes nobles, we do not see it, but we are making a difference in this world. Sometimes we do not realise it, but our philanthropy is active in North America. By giving our time, our talents, and our treasure, by caring for more than just ourselves, by being part of this great organisation, by facing outward instead of inward and daring to get and be involved we can make things better for the children of today, tomorrow and of the future.

“Yours in the sunshine of the Shrine” (Thank you Isaac)

AL SHAMAL CLOWNS IN ACTIONThe Al Shamal Clowns attended many events and parades over the holiday season. December is always a busy time for the clowns -- Christmas parties at companies such as Stantec and Shell, Seniors’ Homes, the Scouts, Festival of Trees, Inner City Kids and Kids with Cancer, to name a few. Our clowns always put a smile on the faces of adults and kids alike.

This year at “Kids with Cancer” there were big smiles on all of the clown’s faces when they had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the Grey Cup and Edmonton Eskimo’s, Tony Washington.

This event is especially rewarding. We received a message from the director of Kid’s with Cancer, and I quote “To the Shrine Clowns, a special thanks to each of you who gave up your Sunday afternoon to help our children. It is wonderful to watch you work the room and apply your art. What child does not love to see a clown do magic tricks and make balloons. Many families commented how wonderful it is to see their children laughing, something that does not always happen. May each of you be blessed for what you do”

We are looking forward to the events and parades in 2016!

TLC UNITHAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Last fall, the TLC Unit was pleased to have made the following donations: $5000 to the Montreal Hospital, $5000 to the Hospital Transportation Fund and $5000 to Free2BeMe.

We will continue our work to bene t the children.

The TLC installed their new slate of of cers for 2016: Chief, Noble Wayne Barrett; Deputy Chief, Noble Maurice Riopel; Treasurer, Liam Harrison; Recorder/Secretary, Peter Davis.

The TLC will be holding their “OKTOBERFEST” on Saturday, October 1st. Be sure to mark your calendars! It will be a night of great food, fellowship and fun; so…polish up your dancing shoes and be prepared to dance and polka the night away!

It will be soon time to dust off our re engines, check the oil, and sound the sirens as we get ready for the summer parade season.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the TLC unit, or if you have any questions about our unit, feel free to contact any of our members.

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILEThe holiday festivities with all their special moments are over and it is now time to look forward to a new year and upcoming events.

During the past year, we welcomed twelve new princesses. We supported the Montreal Shrine Hospital with gift cards, 150 heart-shaped pillows from the Ft. McMurray Club, quilts from the Sewing Group and I-tunes gift cards from the Dancers, for a total of $4,130.

At our regular meeting on February 1, 2016, we held a Memorial Service in memory of our ve departed members: Princesses Bim Nichols, Joan Gerard, Alice Holcombe, Audrey Blanchettt and Vivian Dove.

Election of of cers for 2016-17 will take place at our regular meeting on March 7th. Open installation of Queen and new of cers will take place on March 20th commencing at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow.

All of our members extend our heartfelt thanks to our Shriners for their wonderful support for everything from setting up tables, risers, etc. as we work together for the children.

It was a pleasure to work with Ill. Sir Terry Chapman and his lady, Beverly.

Congratulations to Ill. Sir Murray Sutherland and the newly-installed Divan. May you have an enjoyable and successful year.

Soaring on Wings of Friendship

LADIES AUXILIARYThe Edmonton Ladies Auxiliary to Shriners Hospitals for Children held a very successful Luncheon, Bazaar and Cookie Walk in November and the ladies would like to thank all who attended for their support.

Our next big function is the Tea and Fashion Show scheduled for Saturday, April 16th at the Woodvale Community Centre, Millwoods Golf & Country Club, 4540 - 50th Street, Edmonton. Tickets are $20.00 each and are available from any of the members of the Auxiliary. Village Fashions in Stony Plain will be providing the fashions for our models and other vendors will be available for your shopping pleasure.

It is always very heart warming to be able to help the Shrine Children. From our various fund raising activities throughout the past year, we were able to donate nine thousand ve hundred dollars ($9,500) in support of the Shrine Children in the Montreal Shrine Hospital.

On behalf of all the members of the Ladies Auxiliary, we thank you for your support and wish you a very healthy and prosperous New Year.

ENDOWMENTSIt is my pleasure to bring you an update on our endowments:

Al Shamal completed their commitment to the Pediatric Scoliosis Research Chair in 2012, however, due to government cut backs there were no matching funds available. Therefore, Shriners went on to provide bridge funding for that chair which allowed the U of A to recruit Dr. Berry who has been working with his team diligently on obtaining further knowledge of this debilitating deformity.

The fund that was commenced by Al Shamal now stands at 3.3 million dollars and provides an annual spending allocation of $100,000.00 for research. 2014 saw a return of 15.4 % interest.

The other chair that is sponsored by Al Shamal is “The Shriners Children’s Research Fund which now stands at 1.36 million dollars and provides 41,000 annually for further research.

Nobles you can see that your hard work is quietly assisting others less fortunate than ourselves by proving much needed research which hopefully will offer some relief to the children of the future not only of this province but all around the world.

A quote from the U of A:

“The work Berry is doing will offer a new body of knowledge about genetics of spine research on the road to a cure for pediatric scoliosis”

CASH CALENDARSWe have completed another year of Calendar sales, it was disappointing that we were unable to have a sellout, as was accomplished the last couple of years. This is a large fund raiser for the Shrine and we need the help of all Shriners to make it a success. Everyone needs a calendar in their home and if each member bought one and sold one or two to family, friends and neighbors we could sell out with little or no effort.

We would like to thank Gerry Beyersbergen for donating all the wildlife pictures and also for his time spent helping us with the selection of the pictures. He also personally sold over 100 calendars as a fund raiser for his Lodge.

Thank you to the many others that personally, or with the help of a few people, sold over 150 calendars as a fund raiser for a Lodge, a Unit within the Shrine, or other organizations within the Masonic family.

A very special thank you to Denise Buhay for all her help, while also dealing with her disability, greatly appreciated.

We are asking each and every one for your help next year to make this a very successful fund raiser.

ORIENTAL BAND

On Friday December 11, 2015 the Al Shamal Oriental Band participated in the Annual Children’s Christmas party at the Glenrose Hospital. The band supplied the ice cream treats, the hospital supplied the pizza, and band members donated unwrapped gifts for the kids which were well appreciated. A big thank you goes out to Bob Disler for helping entertain the children. After performing the sweetest music this side of paradise for the kids, the Oriental Band with Ill. Sir Terry Chapman and accompanying Divan presented a cheque to the Glenrose Hospital Foundation in the amount of $25,000 to go towards the funding of an observation room in the Developmental Pediatric Rehabilitation Centre at the hospital.

PARADE MARSHALIt is February and I am in parade mode.

Not in the context of strutting our stuff to keep our hospitals in public’s eye and mind.

Our parade participation has been cited as the single most important reason donors give to ‘our kids’ instead of another equally ne charity across the street. Parades give our hospitals a local face.

But for the moment, let’s think of Shriners parading in the context of membership retention and maybe growth.

Here’s an idea that I pitched to the powers-that-be in my closing parade report last season.

Some of us are getting older. Too old for bikes, trikes and big oppy shoes. What can we do to ensure every Shriner can still parade?

One idea is a Senator’s Float.

Two of our strongest parade groups are south of Edmonton. Battle River has a parade trailer with lots of seating that anybody in any shape can climb into.

Ponoka has a Firetruck. For our purposes, we can think of a re engine as a self-propelled trailer. There are so many grab bars that remen used to hang on to as they raced to a re that almost every ‘old guy’ can nd a comfortable perch on board for a parade.

This means our Nobles south of Edmonton can nd themselves a parade nearly every weekend. I think this is one reason why these both units are so strong.

Is there an Edmonton unit with the right equipment who can make a point of hosting our ‘senators’ during the upcoming parade season?

Please discuss this at your next meeting and let me know if your unit can take this on.

And if you think it’s time for you to look for an easier ride, let me know and I’ll work to nd you the right place to sit and wave at the kids.

Introducing Our 2015-2016 National Patient AmbassadorsEvery year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® selects two national patient ambassadors to represent the patients cared for by the health care system. The ambassadors spend the year sharing their stories, including the importance of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Meet this year’s National Patient Ambassadors:

Katharine Koonce, 11, of Huffman, TexasIn 2008, the Koonce family sought refuge from Hurricane Ike at the restaurant in Houston where Katharine’s father, James, worked.

Suddenly, while 4-and-a-half-year-old Katharine slept, a fire broke out that quickly engulfed her room in smoke and flames. Katharine’s father dove into the room and emerged with Katharine in his arms.

Both father and daughter sustained serious burns. Fifty percent of James’ body had been burned and Katharine had burns covering 70 percent of her body. The two were airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio for emergency care.

Once stable, Katherine was taken to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, via a Medevac flight. After three long months of treatment there, Katharine returned to Texas and continued her rehabilitation at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston, and later, at the Shriners Hospital in Galveston.

Katharine is now 11 years old and is a happy, vivacious and busy child. She practices gymnastics, sings, plays piano and loves to dance. She also enjoys fishing with her father.

Katharine has dealt with this painful situation with grace and bravery. She has been an ambassador for her local Shriners Hospital in Galveston and is happy to now have the opportunity to share her story with others around the country.

“I love God, my parents and the Shriners because they have helped me a lot and they are like family,” said Katharine.

Clint Crain, 15, of Huffman, TexasThe Crain family was out on their boat enjoying the 4th of July weekend in 2014, when tragedy struck.

While standing on the back of the boat, Clint lost his balance and fell right into the propeller.

Once the boat was stopped and Clint was able to swim to the surface, his mother jumped into the water and held Clint while she waited for Clint’s father, who was in the water wakesurfing when Clint fell, to come help her.

Weather and the holiday weekend combined to cause delays in getting Clint to a hospital. Still, a surgeon was onsite and able to treat Clint, who was

in critical condition, when he arrived. After seven days in the hospital, including three in intensive care, and an above-the-knee amputation, Clint was sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston, where he received physical therapy weekly and was fitted with a prosthesis.

The Crain family believes that everything has worked out so well for Clint – possibly even miraculously – for a reason, and that perhaps Clint has a new purpose.

It has only been a year since the accident and Clint is doing remarkably well. He is a very positive and personable teenager and is a great speaker, and hopes to be able to give back to Shriners Hospitals for Children through the ambassadorship.

“It’s the climb I’m taking to be who I was, and be even better than I was, because without them [Shriners Hospitals] I wouldn’t be where I am, I wouldn’t have the things I have, the confidence that I have,” said Clint.

Clint and Katherine’s stories of grace and confidence can be seen on YouTube at youtube.com/ShrinersHospitals, and are available on DVD from the public relations department. Call 813-281-8162 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Be sure to state the colour and sizes of the jerseys and the age of the children in the program. Each set consists of 18 jerseys. As you can appreciate, the number of sets that are available is limited and depend on the donations received. Therefore, the sets are allotted on a “ rst-come” basis. There will be no cost to your lodge. All we ask is that the soccer jerseys are given to a team and that they are used for a number of years. The Masonic lodge has to order the soccer jerseys as they will be given to you for presentation. The deadline for ordering is March 15, 2016.

By getting write-ups and pictures in the local papers that will promote Masonic Lodges, the Shriners and the soccer programs, we hope residents in your area will become more aware of the Masonic lodges and the Shriners. It is also hoped that more members of the Masonic lodges will consider joining Al Shamal Shriners.

We ask that you team up with a Shriner in your area and present the soccer jerseys in person to the team and players.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Fraternally,

Noble Gordon Harris Ill. Sir Murray SutherlandSoccer Chairman Potentate

SILVER WINGS ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION BETWEEN SHRINE UNITSThe Silver Wings look to strengthen its alliance with other units and independent Shriners in 2016.

Any Shriners who are unaf liated with a unit are invited to join the Silver Wings during 2016 parades. There is no commitment other than to have fun while driving one of our Silver Wing go-karts. If you don’t have a truck, but would still like to participate, we encourage you to talk to one of our members about potentially having a Silver Wing hauled to the parade site for you. We would like to see as many Shriners out to parades in 2016 as possible.

Also, Lieutenant Codey Toma has done an amazing job getting our Silver Wings in top condition. The Silver Wings would like to extend an invitation to other motor groups (e.g. TLC Corps, Greeters, Motor Corps, etc.) to get together on a spring weekend to work on our vehicles together. If your group would like to participate, or if you would like to volunteer your mechanical expertise, we invite you to contact Codey Toma, Calum Peace, or Trevor Eliott. Imagine a group of Shriners from multi-units working together to get our units parade-ready! Let’s make it happen!

Shriners Hospitals for Children® continues to be determined to decrease the number of preventable pediatric burn injuries by raising awareness. One program in this effort is the annual Burn Awareness campaign, which began more than 20 years ago.

During the first full week of February, our public relations efforts emphasize Burn Awareness Week, the kickoff of a yearlong educational campaign aimed at burn awareness and prevention, including offering free educational materials via our website. The items, including activity books and fact sheets, are designed to be a resource for firefighters, teachers, parents and others concerned with the safety and well-being of children. Many of the items are available in both English and Spanish.

Helping Children and Adults Be Burn Aware The 2016 Burn Awareness campaign will begin the week of Feb. 7-13. We are once again using the theme “Be Burn Aware,” and focusing on preventing burn injuries in the home, because the vast majority of preventable burn injuries continue to occur in residences. Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds, fire-related injuries, and even electrical burns. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips. In the U.S., the occurrence of major pediatric burn injuries has decreased; these educational efforts do have an impact.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children works year-round to prevent burn injuries by providing burn awareness education,” said Kenneth Guidera, M.D., chief medical officer of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Our 2016 ‘Be Burn Aware’ campaign will continue to focus on teaching children and families ways to avoid burn injuries, especially at home. As part of the annual campaign, we will share information on preventing fire and electrical-related injuries, as well as those caused by scalds or other incidents around the home. Shriners Hospitals for Children hopes to reduce pediatric burn injuries through education, as many of these injuries are preventable.”

Materials Emphasize Safety The campaign features two child-friendly characters who showcase and share our messages. Boots and Brewster – a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot – are featured in activity books for children ages 3-7 and 8-12. The entertaining duo leads children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers, and how to easily correct or avoid them. The coloring pages, word searches, cartoons and other activities are designed to grab children’s attention and present the information in a memorable, age-appropriate manner. The campaign also includes various tip sheets and materials that emphasize prevention of scalds, fire-related and electrical burns.

New this year is an animated video featuring the clever pair, Boots and Brewster, which kids are sure to love. In the new video, available on our website, the entertaining duo takes viewers on a fun and educational adventure to help them become more burn aware.

“Don’t let a careless action ruin your time with family and friends. Be Burn Aware,” said David Greenhalgh, M.D., chief of burns at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California.

“Our burn team is devoted to helping children with devastating burn injuries survive and thrive, and we are equally devoted to teaching parents, children and the community how to prevent burn injuries,” said Dr. Greenhalgh. “We are constantly examining new ways to educate the community about fire danger and provide information on how to prevent injuries. When it comes to burn injuries, prevention is the best medicine.” All materials will be available for viewing and ordering at beburnaware.org. Shriners Hospitals for Children is also assisted in its burn prevention efforts by members of the Shriners fraternity, who promote the campaign in their local communities in a variety of creative ways.

LEGION OF HONOR

The Legion of Honor was requested to provide transport in the parades in which LOH participates. During the past season we were in: St. Albert, Edmonton K-Days, Legal, Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain and Westlock .

Con icting schedules kept us from Onoway and Alberta Beach.

The highlight for me, was the participation with my Daughter (past Guardian in Maple Ridge , BC) , Granddaughter(PHQ) and Grandson who assisted in St. Albert where we distributed twelve boxes of Bully Books.

The two Edmonton area Bethels were active as were DeMolay youth, when time permitted.

This year (2016) we will have some cosmetic work performed on the trailer in time for parade season.

Yours in the Sunshine of the Shrine

Noble Isaac Brower-BerkhovenCommander, LOH

SILVER WINGS WINTER PARADE

The Silver wings were involved in the “Parade of Lights” in Rocky Mountain house on November 28/15.

We decorated the car up with Christmas lights and braved the chilly evening and as the caption said “It’s not a parade without a Shriners’ mini car.”

Our picture showed up in the Rocky Mountain House paper “The Mountaineer”.

SHRINE STORY STILL HAS TO BE TOLD!Shriners International is 144 years old with the rst of 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children being opened 94 years ago in Shreveport, LA.

At one time, Shriners International had more than a million members while

Al Shamal’s membership at one time was well over 1,000.

Today, membership of Shriners International is approximately 257,000 while Al Shamal’s current membership is 635 – including 20 who have still not paid their 2015 dues !

I fondly remember over the years when the Edmonton Shrine Club and Al Shamal donated $400,000 to the Glenrose Hospital; when Al Shamal and Alberta RCMP started Operation Red Coat/Red Fez where Mounties sought out children in rural isolated areas of the province who could bene t from services provided by Shriners Hospitals. That proved so successful that it was adopted across Canada, New York State and sheriff counties in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia.

Then, in conjunction with the Alberta Government, we established a $3-million research fund into juvenile scoliosis at the University of Alberta Hospital. And when Shriners Hospitals for Children were the rst to manufacture arti cial skin, they immediately made it available to our U of A Hospital and all other Canadian hospitals which had burns centres. We also established a research fund at the University Hospital.

When separatism raised its ugly head some years ago, Al Shamal contacted all Shriners across Canada to form the Canadian Association of Shrine Temples.

All of these achievements resulted in untold amounts of print and electronic publicity over the years! But when was the last time you read, saw or heard ongoing coverage about Al Shamal Shriners from Edmonton on Central and Northern Alberta TV stations, radio stations, daily newspapers or weeklies?

I still have newspaper copies of all these remarkable achievements in years gone by. So who is to blame for us not getting the message out on Al Shamal and the incredible work we do today such as distribution of Shriners Bullyproof Guides? Or the phenomenal contributions our units have been and are still making to various charities and not for pro t organizations! Can we chastise that aforementioned media? Or members of Al Shamal ? Or is it a combination of both?

Having said that, what must the Al Shamal Shriners do to rectify this unacceptable situation where the public no longer hears that much about us despite the incredible work we do at our 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children. And let’s not forget the 12,000 doctors we have trained over the years.

Returning to Al Shamal’s current membership of 635, some 252 Shriners (or 39% of our membership)) reside in Edmonton with the remaining 383 (61%) in various North and Central Alberta centres such as St. Albert with 50 members, 33 from Sherwood Park, 31 from Fort McMurray, 12 from Edson, 11 from St. Grove, 9 from Stony Plain and the rest from various towns and cities.

If you don’t see your Unit or Club news, you missed the deadline!

Like Edmonton, these various centres have service clubs, unions, universities and colleges, professional organizations, chambers of commerce, nancial institutions, women’s organizations plus immigrant groups. I know rsthand because they are always looking for speakers.

So if everyone reading this column calls me (780 487 4566) with the name and telephone number of any of the aforementioned organizations looking for a speaker in Edmonton, Central or Northern Alberta . . . I will guarantee them a guest speaker (including myself if no one else available) as well as letting the media outlet or outlets in their community know about the speaker, Shriners and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

If all other Shrine Temples were to follow suit, do you think we just might be able to reduce of the loss of a Shriner every 43 minutes? In my view, there’s no question we must make this change – but only if members of Al Shamal, and other Shriners in Canada, the U.S. and elsewhere in the world agree!

In other words Nobles, it’s not up to the other Shriners to make these necessary changes! It’s up to you and me!

POTENTATES BALL 2016

“Wow” it was one of those nights. Handsome well attended nobles and their beautiful ladies were everywhere. The ladies (dressed in their nery) stole the spot light and it was wonderful, what an affair for our new Potentate Ill. Sir Murray Southerland and Lady Verna Hutton.

The evening of cially started off with a grand entrance of the 2016 Divan followed by Most Worshipful Brother Chris Batty and Lady Wendy and nally Ill. Sir Murray and Lady Verna. The piper was masterful in escorting each group and joining the Ill. Sir in a toast to the piper. Handled in a quick fashion, it was quickly bottoms up with nary a hint of anything but pleasure. The piper, Lauren Brown, (who happens to be the granddaughter of Ill. Sir Jim Edgar) performed with calmness and steady hand (well done).

The Legion of Honor with a very quick stylish form presented and posted the ags and were then dismissed from their duties by the Ill. Sir.

As special note resulting from our morning annual meeting was the election of Noble John Slade to the of ce of Recorder of Al Shamal for 2016.

It was a wonderful presentation of 3 nobles of high esteem and quali cations running for the of ce, which had to be decided in the end by a second ballot which only spoke further of the memberships appreciation and value for them all.

We had a past Grand Master and current Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta both enjoying the head table and were applauded by all.

We unfortunately did not have an Oriental Guide elected but I’m sure with all the ne talent available one will very soon ll the position.

Toast to the Divan and of ce of the president of the United States was given by Ill. Sir Doug Grant.

Invocation by Ill. Sir Grant Geldart

A very ne offering of Shriners Creed was given by Noble Paul Jaskiw

Dinner was then served and I must tell you it was a very ne meal. Everything was well done and beautifully presented. The wine was also a ne selection and the service exceptional and very pleasing.

The Grand Master, the Most Worshipful Brother Chris Batty gave his greetings from Grand lodge and was very gracious to Al Shamal with his remarks.

A very ne New toast to the ladies was given by Noble Wayne Barrett in the form of a well thought out poem which was then responded to by his Lady Estelle. A very thoughtful and co-ordinated accomplishment by both.

The immediate Past Potentate of Al Shamal, Ill. Sir Terry gave his parting remarks and was presented a parting token from his Divan by Ill. Sir Murray, Terry’s Lady Bev then received a beautiful bouquet from Lady Verna and Ill. Sir Murray

We had the pleasure of the attendance of Ill. Sir Bob Newman and Lady Wendy along with Chief Rabban Noble Byron Nelson from Al Azhar Calgary. An email from High Priest and Prophet Ernie Hilland was read apologizing for his absence as he was unable to attend our function as Al Azhar was having a Robbie Burns night which required his attendance, but sends his very best wishes to Murray and all of Al Shamal.

Past Potentates attending were:

Ill. Sir Jim Edgar, Ill. Sir Jack Watt & Lady Mel, Ill. Sir Doug Grant & Lady Renate, Ill. Sir Armond Nesdoly & Lady Diana, Ill. Sir Bob Thachuk & Lady Pat, Ill. Sir Larry Howard & Lady Rosanne, Ill. Sir Grant Geldart,Ill. Sir Terry Chapman & Lady Bev

Also attendance Lady Colleen Hiron, (Ill. Sir Bernie Hiron), Lady Jean Boone (Ill. Sir Bill Boone) Jean is also Queen of Al Amira Temple.

Other guests included Ill. Sir Murray’s son in-law and granddaughter, Murray’s brother and wife. Noble Ward Oatway & Lady Carol (Battle River Shrine Club President) Noble Brian Poltorak & lady Edith (Vice chair of Northern Lights Club)

Special appreciation to:

Noel Gauthier and the Arab Patrol, Recorder Noble John Slade & the L.O.H., Captain Dwayne Johnson and the Provost Corp. Ill. Sir Bob Thachuk (2016 Director General) for his council and organization

The formal part of the evening was capped off with remarks fromIll. Sir Murray. He asked us to all sit back, loosen our ties and anything else that was tight and enjoy Mr Vain Productions who then spun his usual superlative tunes for our enjoyment

As reported by Ill. Sir Doug Grant
