In the summer of 2008 while at a car show looking at two Cobras Jim inno-cently (so he says) mentioned to his wife Lori that when he was younger he used to think someday he would get a kit and build one. That year was Jims 60th birth-day and Lori masterminded the acquisi-tion of a Cobra kit and frame….as a sur-prise birthday present with help from car friends. Fast forward and a year after the “present” Jim with the help of friends had pretty much completed the car and it was ready for painting which took 3 more months. So in the photo above you see the final beautifully completed Cobra of Jim and Lori’s sporting a 302/350 motor by Engine Factory mated to a 5 speed Tremec transmission and completing the drivetrain is a Ford 8.8 Tru-Trac rear end.

If you have a copy of the 2012 Snap-On Tools calendar you will find it featured for the month of Feb-ruary. To say that this wonderful car has won many very special awards and trophies is an understatement. The car has I t’s own trophy and award room in the Clarks home in Woodmere Lakes.

Jim and Lori moved to Venice as per-manent residents in 2011 from Fleet-wood, Pennsylvania which is near Red-ding. Jim also had a passion for “dirt track” racing in his younger days and has many plaques attesting to his being a “guest” driver on many of our nations famous raceways while wheeling some very famous and expensive race cars around the ovals.

In 2011 Jim and Lori went to one of Lances Albertson’s shows and Lance told him about our club. Now Gary, our club president who we all sympathize with due to his minor difficulty with hearing “heard” someone 6 car show rows away from him “whispering” about looking for a car club. Jim was whisper-ing to Julie Petree and Gary appeared with club application forms in hand in a flash. Gary has told us that he can read lips across a football field. Anyway Jim and Lori became more of our wonderful members that we already have in our club. He stated that he likes all the varie-ty of things we do and we all appreciate that Jim and Lori and look for many years of good times with you both and that great “Cobra”.

Like floating on a cloud they say. That fairly well sums up the description of riding in a Rolls Royce. And Justin and Patty Wells 1972 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow (LWB) long wheel base four door performs in just that way. Message From The PresidentPlease remember

that there will not be a Regular General M e m b e r s h i p Meeting on July 11th but we will

meet at the ‘Bob Evans Restaurant’ located at 4312 S. Tamiami Tr. Venice just East of the Venice Wal-mart store at 7:00 PM for dessert. This is always a fun evening.

I would like to thank all of our members that attended our ‘PAID’ Car Show on Saturday May 28th at the ‘Grand Paradiso Housing Development’ and took time out from their holiday weekend to help our club. We had (28) vehicles attend (24) from our club with one man joining our club that day, so it was a very successful day for us. These ‘PAID’ car shows are very important to our financial condition.

Our July Monthly Car Tour will be a ride thru ‘Historic Old Venice’ with lunch at ‘Anita’s Restaurant’ in Nokomis on Saturday, July 16th. We will meet at the old K-Mart parking lot at 8:30 AM and depart at 9:00 AM. Please see flier for details and info.

Please note that the ‘Ideal Classic Cars’ car show is cancelled until fall, probably September but we do not know yet.

The Board of Directors has set up what we call a ‘Social Fund’ that will set aside money’s that can be used for paying for events such as our annual Breakfast at The Beach or possibly a picnic without taking money from the general fund which we can not do. These money’s will come from the sale of discount coupons sold at the

tours, donations at the Breakfast at The Beach or if members choose to donate back their half of the 50/50 drawing at the membership meetings, certainly not required. The first half of the 50/50 always goes into the general fund.

We need one of our members to step up and volunteer to fill the job of Monthly General Membership Meeting Program Provider. Chuck Ford needs to be relieved from this position. The program can be a speaker or a film shown at the meetings as you choose. Please help us out. Call Gary Felker for info. or questions.

We also need a member to pick up ‘Car Show Fliers’ at Lance’s Car Shows or other cars shows that you are attending and bring them to our monthly General Membership Meetings to display. Call Gary Felker for info. or questions.

Since our members that were taking pictures at our events have gone north for the summer season I need someone to volunteer to fill in and take pictures at our summer events for our monthly newsletter. Please call me if you can do this.

The July Monthly Lunch will be held at The ‘British Open Pub’ located at 367 Jacaranda Blvd., Venice. on Wednesday, July 27th at 1:00 PM. Please try hard to make this event as these lunches are always very enjoyable for everyone.

Please feel free to call me anytime if you have any ideas on how to make our club bigger and better and more enjoyable. We need everyone’s help and input to make our club prosper in the future.

The Oakland Motor Car Company of Pontiac, Michigan, was founded in 1907 by Edward Murphy and Alanson Brush. The first Oakland used a vertical two-cylinder engine that rotated counterclockwise. This design also featured a planetary transmission. Five models were created, designated Model A–E with each subsequent letter increasing in total vehicle size. 1908, the first year of Oakland production, saw 278 vehicles roll off the line.

After one year of production, Oakland’s principal founder, Edward Murphy, sold half of the company to William C. Durant’s General Motors Corporation in early 1909. When Murphy died in the summer of 1909, GM acquired the remaining rights to Oakland. Conventional 4-cylinder engine models were introduced shortly after the GM takeover.

In 1916, the company introduced a V8 engine, and production soared to 35,000 in 1917. By early 1920, however, production and quality control problems began to plague the division. In 1921, under new General Manager Fred

Hannum, a consistent production schedule was underway and the quality of the cars improved, and Oakland vehicles shared the GM A platform used by other brands. One marketing tactic was the employment of a quick-drying bright blue automotive lacquer by Duco, leading to the slogan “True Blue Oakland.”

By the mid-1920s, a sizable price gap existed between Chevrolet and Oakland. In 1926, Oakland introduced the Pontiac, a shorter wheelbase “light six” priced to sell at a 4 cylinder car’s price point, but still above Chevrolet. Pontiac was the first of the GM companion marques, and in its first year sold 49,875 units. By 1929, GM sold 163,000 more Pontiacs than Oaklands. The discontinuation of Oakland was announced with the deepening of the Great Depression in 1931. Pontiac was the only companion make to survive beyond 1940, or to survive its “parent” make.

The other GM companion makes were: LaSalle (Cadillac) 1927-1940, Viking (Oldsmobile) 1929-1930 and Marquette (Buick) 1930.

Our Tour began at Ideal Classic Cars were we all assembled at 9:30 am and embarked on our tour shortly after 10:00 am. A total of 31 club members participated with 24 cars. We headed south out of Ideal Classic’s on Rte-41 (Tamiami Trail) to Rte.776 were we took a right hand turn and continued southwest to Manasota Beach Road. As we made our Right hand turn we were greeted by volunteer road cleanup crew. Did anyone see Chuck Ford? He volunteered that day for cleanup detail.

We continued our adventure along the shoreline and viewed many outstanding homes with price tags to match not to mention the flora and the fauna. As we approached middle beach we slowed to take in the ocean & beach views simply MAGNIFICENT!!! As we passed The Gulfview Restaurant the Old Woodie kept pulling me in that direction. I managed to make the rotary safely as did all members ( NO laggers either ). We headed back to Rte.776 were we made a left hand turn, O-o-p-s were are all the cars?? I guess No one made the light!! Thank Goodness Stefanos Restaurant was a stone throw away. We all arrived safely and strapped on our feed bags and enjoyed our meals . Our Social Event raffle (Picnic on The Beach) netted fifty-five dollars ($55) bringing our total to $247. Our winner was Ethel Sieffert who won a $25.00 gift certificate to Allegro’s Bistro on Venice Ave.

As some of you may OR may not know we have reserved Maxine Barrett Park for next year and have paid for it ($165.00). We are well on our way to a nice catered event for all to enjoy. Thank You ALL for your support and do not forget we are heading June 25th to Sarasota Classic Car Museum where we will be enjoying lunch @ Barnacle Bills.
