Editorial What is a Community?

Well a quick search on the web includes the following definitions: a group of people living in a particular

local area; "the team is drawn from all parts of the community" common ownership; "they shared a

community of possessions" a group of nations having common

interests; "they hoped to join the NATO community" agreement as to goals; "the preachers

and the bootleggers found they had a community of interests" residential district: a district where

people live; occupied primarily by private residences (ecology) a group of interdependent

organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other

In this month’s issue we have 2 local community Groups explaining exactly what it is they do, both groups have s ummed up ex a c t l y my own interpretation of what it means to be a member of a Community and that is “We Serve”. We help out in good times and bad, we look after each other, we give of our time and experience.

Tiger was entering his 51st season with our club and will be sadly missed from around the club and the Lilydale community. The club wishes Rob McLelland all the best on his move to Sydney and thanks for his past two seasons as our president.

Lilydale District Progress Association At the February meeting the group agreed to take up the offer from Lilydale Regional Arts to sponsor a pole's repainting.

Lilydale 150th Grant application is now in with the Council and we will have to wait until July for a result but that doesn't mean everything is on hold.

"Lilydale's 150th Celebration 1861 - 2011" At going to print the countdown stands at about 230 sleeps.

The week of the 22 October 2011 begins with an opening of a 'then and now' photographic exhibition which will run for 9 days. Also a Spring Show, Old time dancing and a Film night are being planned among other things.

The secretary has updated details on the group's w e b p a g e h t t p : / / w w w . t c o . a s n . a u / o a c /community_groups.cgi?groupID=20&oacID=37 and thanks to Jayne at the access centre all the minutes from October 2008 are now available on line too.

RSPCA Market Stall I am going to have more stalls at the Sunday market. I am the one who sells the brownies, caramel shortbread and flapjacks to raise money for the RSPCA. Everyone has been so generous that I want to continue. I have been given some goodies from the RSPCA which make great gifts.

I have raised $276 and I would like to raise more, and you can help by coming and supporting my stall. REMEMBER that every cent goes to the RSPCA.

My stall days will be: Sunday 27th March 8th May and 22nd May

Thank You from Nicola Scott, age 10.

Letter to the Editor Fred's Back!

To all the members of the local community who expressed concern at the rustling of our goat, Fred, thank you. Thank you particularly to Christie Seymour of Austin's Road who found Fred and then identified him from a poster in the window of Dave and Norma Potter's Newsagency and Take-away. We ware very happy to provide the $300 reward money to Christie. Fred was absent for seven weeks and returned in very poor condition. Thanks to the Scottsdale/Lilydale Vet service he has been restored to some of his previous glory - just needs to put on a bit more condition.

Whether he was taken as a practical joke or for any other reason, it nearly cost Fred his life. No thanks to the perpetrators.

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch February Meeting

Twelve people attended this meeting, including our Guest Speaker Michael Ferguson.

Michael is the Shadow Minister for Education, and gave a very informative talk on topics including Education. Everybody associated with the Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch would like to thank Michael for his continued support and taking the time out of his very busy schedule to attend our meetings as a Guest Speaker.

Police Report

On the 15/01/11 the tyres were slashed on a horse float in Doaks Road Lilydale. This matter is under investigation by local Police.

A significant home burglary occurred on a residence in Pipers River Road, Turners Marsh on the 17/01/11, between 9am and 4pm.

Thieves broke into the house and removed a gun safe, which was bolted to the floor, containing several firearms valued at several thousand dollars.

They also stole a Braap motorcycle, which was parked on the front porch of the residence which was valued at $3900. Launceston CIB are investigating and are following several leads which will hopefully result in offenders being charged in the near future.

Police are still targeting the use of unregistered trail bikes on public reserves and roads.

Any information leading to the identification of riders is being sought by police, and should be forwarded to Crime Stoppers, or by phoning 131444.

Police would like to remind members of the public to report any suspicious behavior to Bush Watch on 1800 333 000 or to Police on 131444. If the matter is urgent, and requires immediate assistance, Triple 000 should be used.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch will be held at the Fire Station on 10th March 2011 commencing at 8pm.

Remember everyone is welcome to attend.

Lilydale Fire Brigade Fire Permits

Lilydale Fire Brigade has had a quiet summer fire season, thanks to the weather & the community’s responsible use of fire.

Fire permits are still required at this stage.

The best time to burn is in the early evening & preferably not in strong wind conditions. Small piles of 1 cubic metre are able to be burnt without a permit however you are required to attend the fire at all times until extinguished, have fire suppression equipment on hand & for everybody’s safety you should register your fire by calling TFS on 1800 000 699. By registering your burn our hard working volunteers’ will not get false or unnecessary callouts.

For piles larger than 1cubic metre you will require a permit which may or may not be issued depending on the weather, type of material to be burnt & location of the burn.

While permit requirements may be frustrating to arrange they are an essential tool to enable TFS to control the amount of burning carried out at any one time making a safer community for us all.

For fire safety advise & information please contact Lilydale Fire Brigade or TFS site: www.fire.tas.gov.au.

Recruiting Now is good time to join the Brigade as we are at the beginning of our training year. If you are interested or require more info the Brigade Officers are happy to assist. TFS has jobs in volunteer brigades to suit everyone. You can participate in many brigade activities even if you don’t want to fight fires. Ladies & Men over 16 are eligible to join .

Vale TIGER We recently lost our longest serving active member with the sad passing of TIGER. Tiger had been a member of the Brigade for 28 years fulfilling many varying roles. Tiger was a silent achiever, many tasks such as mowing the Station grass (weeds) went unnoticed, but was always done. He would clean, mow, sweep, tidy, laugh, tease, teach, guide & participate in everything. Tiger was always there, part of our team, a true legend of the Brigade. Tiger was our friend, fellow fire fighter & all round nice guy. We miss Tiger more than any one would guess. A legend has passed. Our memories are strong. Thanks for everything Tiger. Footy season just won’t be the same without you.

Lilydale Lions Club What is it that Lions do?

For those of you that might not realise the value of Lions Clubs, or where being a member of Lions can help, I have included a brief article from the Lions’ website on what the Lions in Christchurch are doing to help the victims of the earthquake in that beautiful, devastated city:

“Our disaster preparedness and relief programs enable Lions to help local communities when disaster strikes – like Tuesday’s earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation) is providing relief for earthquake victims in New Zealand and local Lions are also reaching out to help their neighbors. The following story, from Past International Director Ron Luxton, shows how Lions are helping others following this disaster.

The devastating earthquake has seen an immediate response from local and international Lions. The rescue work is continuing in collapsed buildings. Most of the city is without power, water or waste facilities. Clean drinking water is a huge priority for the citizens.

District Governor Raewyn Clearwater reports that within 24 hours, she located and purchased a bulk supply of bottled drinking water. With the assistance of PDG Phillip Lynch and many local Lions, they have distributed bottles of drinking water throughout the city and suburbs.

DG Raewyn has mobilised many Lion volunteers and has contacted local radio stations who have broadcast exactly where the supplies of water are available. Raewyn is quoted as saying “the people were so very grateful to the Lions for the water that many of the residents wanted to help pay for the cost of the water and were very moved that, although affected themselves, the Lions were out helping the people of the city.”

The Lions clubs in Christchurch have all volunteered to join a roster which will see Lions out every day distributing more fresh drinking water. This is possible due to an immediate grant of US$10,000 from LCIF. A call this evening for 20 volunteers to help at the Civil Defence Welfare centres tomorrow has seen 34 Lions volunteer within a matter of a couple of hours – this is in addition to those distributing the water.

DG Raewyn and her cabinet have also made available $20,000 each to the Salvation Army and the City Mission to purchase food used in preparing meals for displaced persons at the Civil Defence Welfare Centres around the city. This will enable the Salvation Army and the City Mission to concentrate on the preparation and distribution of food and meals to those in need. DG Raewyn is very proud of the response of local Lions and extremely grateful for the support she has received from Lions around the world and from LCIF.”

Lions are normal people who are willing to do something for the community on normal days, as well as in times of crisis. They help support the emergency

About Us

Lilydale Brigade exists with 12 active members, not many ay!

We have only 5 qualified Structural Fire Fighters, 4 of which are officers. We do need your help to provide the level of protection our community deserves. We all have regular jobs & regular families and are not always available when called upon due to our few numbers. Our members are very dedicated & hard working fire fighters but we also have lives outside of TFS.

We are volunteers, we don’t get paid. We are called out any time of the day or night in all sorts of weather conditions leaving our families, jobs or sleep behind to help our community. We do this because we want to. Our reward is “the satisfaction of being able to help people in need”. We don’t have to do any of this; we just do it because we care. We answer questions freely when asked, offer advice when requested & support everyone when needed.

Your help will always be appreciated.

Come for a chat, you never know you might enjoy it.

Lilydale Senior Citizens By the time this is written the gutter guard should be all finished around the club rooms as the gutters fill up with leaves off the trees.

Our indoor bowls have started again with one carnival being held at Deloraine. They have changed their rules (only two teams from each club) which helps the smaller clubs.

Our carnival will be held on the 30th March in the Memorial hall.

One of our oldest members passed away earlier this month we convey our sympathy to his family.

We do hope to see new faces at the club soon.

Our next meeting will be on March 8th at 1.30pm in our club rooms.

See you all next month

organisations whilst they are busy doing what they do best.

The Lilydale Lions will be assisting the Christchurch Lions by making a donation to Christchurch appeal through Lions, as it has done recently for the Queensland floods, Cyclone Yasi and Tasmanian floods. It is our, and your, contribution to assist the less fortu-nate, and those in need or peril. And as you can see by the above article, those funds go straight to where they are needed, with no administration fees or middle men; because all Lions are volunteers, at all levels. Our motto is:

“We Serve” Lilydale Markets

We took our sausage sizzle to the night markets in February where a big crowd gathered to see some of the performers from the fringe circus festival. The sausages proved very popular, requiring a quick resupply half way through the night. Well done to Nic, who stepped in for our regular BBQ King (Bill) to do the cooking duties.

Well done also to Carmencita (I hope I spelled it right) and Simon for arranging the circus personnel. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Lions Conventions

Lions, as an Australia wide and worldwide organisation, have regular conventions. The Australian Lions Convention in 2011 is to be held in Launceston in April 2011. There will be hundreds of Lions prowling the streets for the four day get together.

In Lilydale, we had our own convention, when visiting members of the Lions Club of Lilydale (Victoria) joined local members for morning tea. It was amazing how many similarities there are between the two clubs, besides getting each others mails, bills and receipts. Both are of a similar size, do similar activities and have similar fund raising methods. A good morning was had and it is hoped that we can maintain a relationship with our sister club from the north island.

Cow Manure

The pile of manure remains ready to fulfil your orders. At $5 a bag (about 25 litres) it is very good value, and very effective in the garden. Call Steve on 6395 1323 to order. We will deliver to the local area.

In 2008, when the World Cup was last held in Australia, Flanagan and Chugg Taekwondo placed 4th out of over 140 martial arts clubs. This year we hope to build on that success.

Classes are held in the Lilydale Memorial Hall on Wednesdays: Tiny Taekwondo 5.30 to 6.15 Children and adults 6.30 to 8.00

Hillwood Berry Farm It's go go go, with an incredible start to the new year for everyone at Hillwood Berry Farm. With the new cafe swinging its doors open one week before Christmas, the influx of visitors that passed through Berry Farm doors (and berry patches!) exceeded all expectations. It seemed the Berry Farm was the place to be over the Summer Holidays.

“We were caught a little by surprise by just how busy we were over the Christmas and New Year’s period and were very lucky to have a fantastic crew of local staff, with an endless amount of energy and enthusiasm, who were totally dedicated to the somewhat overwhelming task”

Owners Simon and Stacy have been especially touched by the overwhelming support by the local community who have welcomed their efforts with open arms and remained patient with large crowds of tourists and initial “teething” for the new venture.

“It’s been an amazing whirlwind of activity. As the dust settles, we are getting a better feel for what people enjoy and are conjuring up some new and exciting activities for people of all ages”.

“Our Sunday live acoustic music is proving very popular and will continue into the winter season. Other exciting activities will include Friday night footy at the Farm, Theatre nights, weekly kidz club gatherings and much more.” “We also hope to start focussing on special events such as birthday parties, weddings and corporate gatherings.

There will be no slowing down for the Berry Farm in winter with planting fruit for next season the main priority in the upcoming months. “We’re well aware

that there is a lot of work that still needs to be done and our ultimate goal is to supply the very best Berries to our customers for the longest period of time. We’ll be focussing on planting the most successful varieties of fruit and hoping to double production for next year. We still have a long road ahead of us, but we plan to enjoy every step of the way. We feel very lucky to live in such an amazing community. Who could ask for more?”

Pony Club News The summer has been very busy with weekly jumping and dressage lessons for those junior and senior riders who are enthusiastic.

The work on our new dressage arena is well underway and should be finished in time for our April rally. This all-weather arena will be a tremendous asset to our growing numbers of riders.

Lilydale Adult Riders Unfortunately our February rally was cancelled due to bad weather (not even a raincoat was going to help riders and horses that day!) We had a great day of riding instruction planned but we can still look forward to our next rally on Saturday 19th March. At the end of March, we are also having a joint weekend camp with the North East Adult Riding Club. The two days will include lessons and trail riding and all LDPC Adult Riders are welcome to attend.

Rallies are held at the Karoola Grounds on the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Please contact Jayne Blyth on 0419 844 520 or [email protected] for further information.

Tasmanian Regional Arts - Lilydale Branch The Lilydale Branch of the TRA recently held its AGM and a new committee was elected. The President is Catherine Hamilton, the secretary Brenda Bryce and the treasurer Ian Scott. Catherine thanked outgoing president and treasurer, Ian Williams and Graeme Campbell, for all their hard work whilst in office.

The committee was very pleased to note that Caitlyn Livingston, a former winner of the Peter Alting Award, which is given by the committee to an arts student of Lilydale District School, has won a place at the Victorian Academy of the Arts to study theatre production. We congratulate Caitlyn and we would be interested to hear from other former winners to know what they are doing now. We are hoping to have a display at the 150th birthday celebrations for Lilydale, and it would be nice to include some of the work of our talented students in the display.

We have some talented musicians in the district who would like to know if there are any violinists, violists and cellists in the area who would be interested in playing chamber music?

We have an exhibition of quilts coming in March. It is the work of the NSW Quilters Guild and is called 'What tickles your fancy'. This will be in the function room at Providence Vineyard, 236 Lalla Road, from 12th - 26th March and will be open from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm. Do come and have a look as they are quite beautiful works.

If you have any suggestions for events in the arts area for Lilydale, please contact the secretary on 63951290. We welcome comments and new members.

Our first meeting for the year was followed by a shared lunch where we were able to catch up on holiday news.

One or two of our members have volunteered to give cooking tips to some students at our local school at some future date to be arranged.

Donations of biscuits are required for Agfest in early May.

The State Handicrafts & Home Industries Exhibition will be held at Punchbowl Christian Centre between 26th and 28th May.

We have decided to give a donation of $50 towards repainting of the poles to the Lilydale branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts.

Two members travelled to Hobart on the 15th February to attend a reception at Government House celebrating the 75th Anniversary of C.W.A. in Tasmania. A very enjoyable time was had by all who attended (including quite a few husbands).

Where there’s a will there’s a way Finding a woman sobbing that she had locked her keys in her car, a passing soldier assures her that he can help.

She looks on amazed as he removes his trousers, rolls them into a tight ball and rubs them against the car door.

Magically it opens.

"That's so clever," the woman gasps. "How did you do it?"

"Easy," replies the man.

"These are my khakis".

Heartburn / indigestion or reflux. This is often described as a burning feeling that moves up the food pipe (oesophagus) towards the throat. Other symptoms include burping up stomach juices, suddenly getting extra saliva in your mouth, a cough that cannot be explained, a ‘lump’ deep in your throat.

The muscle ring, which is between the stomach and the oesophagus, sometimes does not close properly and the acid contents from the stomach wash up into the oesophagus. This causes burning to the oesophagus, which is painful.

Some things can put pressure on the muscle ring and force it open – such as eating large meals, eating too quickly, not chewing properly, eating then exercising, bending over or straining, lying flat, being overweight, being pregnant or eating spicy acidic fatty foods.

Some things can cause the muscle ring to lose its strength or tone; Getting older, alcohol, smoking, caffeine drinks, stress and anxiety, some medicines. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines can aggravate heartburn.

Any chest pain should be discussed with your doctor, as there are many illnesses that can cause chest pain. If you have heartburn there are ways to prevent it occurring; Eat smaller meals, eat slowly, chew well, cut down alcohol and caffeine drinks, stop smoking, raise the head end of your bed by about 1 brick, loose weight, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your medicines.

Antacid tablets or mixtures are often used to relieve heartburn (e.g. Mylanta, Gaviscon, Quickeze). These are quite effective but if you need to use them most days, then you probably need something else to prevent the heartburn from occurring. There are many acid-suppressing medications available from your doctor or pharmacist. Ranitidine or Zantac has been available for many years from a pharmacy, but recently Salpraz (pantoprazole) has become available from pharmacies - and this is stronger than ranitidine or Zantac. When taken every day, these medicines slow the acid production in the stomach and prevent the heartburn. Chronic heartburn can cause damage to the oesophagus, and it may require many months of acid-suppressing medications to heal the oesophagus.

Heartburn is very common, but you don’t need to suffer. Ask us to help you find what may be most appropriate for you.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

Arrangements have been made to celebrate the jubilee of the church in a fitting manner on December 20 and 21. On the Saturday evening an old-fashioned “tea meeting” will be held, when it is anticipated that a record and representative gathering will be present, including the Right Rev. J. C. Jones, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Tasmania, the Hon. Alan Wardlaw, M.L.C., the Warden (Mr. L. A. Proctor), and representatives from Launceston, Scottsdale, Nabowla, and other districts. On Sunday, the 21st inst., special services will be held, and the Moderator will unveil two memorial fablets, one to the memory of the late Rev. Robert Campbell, who ministered in the church for 30 years, and the other to the Memory of the “Old Pioneers” of the church. The following inscription will appear on the tablet in memory of the pioneers :

“Thou wast their Rock, Their Foundation, and their Might

Thou Lord their Captain in the well fought fight”

“In grateful memory of the early pioneers of the Church. In the midst of many hardships they kept the lamp of faith burning. The memory of the just is blessed.”

Lilydale R&SLA Two important events happened for the local Branch this month. The first being the AGM, which was well attended and saw all positions filled with willing office bearers,

which bodes well for another good year ahead.

The second was the Annual Dinner, which this year was held at the Karoola Hall. The tables looked great and the food was brilliant. Guests included Members from George Town, Scottsdale and Bridport RSL branches, Representatives from Government, Opposition, Department of Veteran Affairs and Legacy. All who attended enjoyed the time spent together.

Next meeting of the sub-branch is Thursday 17th March, at the Senior Citizens Club rooms commencing at 7.30 p.m.

Lilydale Village Market Thank you all for your support in making the Mini Fringe Circus Festival at the Lilydale Village Night Market on Sat 5 February a great success!

Our community responded in such an amazing way that it is making us think more about night markets. We haven’t scheduled any more night markets for the rest of this season. The enthusiastic response from the Lilydale community to the Saturday night events seems to suggest that we are fulfilling a community gathering role. Please let us know what you think. Suggestions for themes and improvements are welcome. Please send your ideas by email to [email protected].

For March the market dates are Sunday 13 and Sun 27 10am-2pm

Goodness, its March already!

Lilydale Playgroup Our year is off to a great start. Firstly & most importantly we’d like to say a big warm thank you to Peter and Sarah for the donation of children’s CD’s. The music has brought a happy festive atmosphere to our playgroup. Another sincere big thanks to Narelle for the generous donation of a couch. We now have a cosy little corner for sharing a relaxing cuppa with friends while reading books to our older children and feeding the younger ones. The most relaxing fun you can have as a mum doing four things at once!

Upcoming Events

We’ll be joining the teddy bears at the Lions Club Teddy Bear’s Picnic again this year (27th March 10am – 2pm). We’re hoping to raise some funds for the playgroup to update and improve the outdoor play facilities. We will be selling biscuits and bickie decorating kits for the kids to decorate their own. We will also be selling preloved kids clothes. CAN YOU HELP? We need to locate a trestle table we can use for the day. Donations of kids clothes would also be greatly appreciated. If you would like to help with the bickie making that would be great too! If you can help with any of this phone Anni on 6395 4399.

Remember everyone is welcome. First session free ($3/wk per family includes hot drinks and munchies). For further information, contact Anni on 6395 4399 or Brooke on 6395 1442 or just pop in, we’d be glad to see you. (We’re on Station Rd behind the old church).

Stock up for Winter: Don’t waste your hard earned money buying ready made stocks, they are easy, cheap and tasty when you ‘do it yourself’.

Stock making is not difficult and as it makes use of scraps and leftovers, it is very frugal. Keep containers of stock in your freezer, so it's ready at a moment's notice. Freeze stock in ice cube trays, then transfer the cubes to a plastic freezer bags, so you have perfectly measured, small amounts of stock for cooking.

Save a lot of fat and calories by using stock for sautéing. You can also add lots of flavour to everyday foods (like rice) by using stock instead of water in cooking.

Making vegetable stock is a great way to clean out the refrigerator of food, don't limit your stock making ingredients to whole vegetables. Start saving peels (well washed, of course) and trimmings while you cook. Your stock will be strained before being used, and all those unattractive peels will be gone, but they will have imparted a lovely flavour to your stock. Some excellent vegetables (and vegetable scraps) to use are: onions, garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, celery, mushrooms, peas, corn (empty corn cobs can also add lots of flavour to veg. stock), parsley, green beans, beets, bell peppers, green onions, shallots, fresh basil or other herbs

Making poultry stock, you can buy chicken or turkey parts to make stock (buy inexpensive parts, such as backs and necks). Poultry stock is also a great way to use the bones that are leftover when you de-bone chicken breasts. You can also use a leftover cooked chicken or turkey carcass instead of fresh raw meat to make stock
