9GA hosted a very special guest this past month. Crossfit Free owner came in as a special guest instructor for a day. It was a great opportunity for the kids to get

coached by someone who has sent multiple athletes to the Crossfit Games the past few years. He’s highly regarded as one of the best in the area, if not in the country,

and he runs the premiere Cross-fit box in New Hampshire. 9GA students had a blast!

9GA hosted The United Nations Association of Greater Boston (UNAGB) this past week in Mr. Hicks's 9th grade class. Students

worked on a Model UN curric-ulum based on Across Women’s Lives reporting and discussed the connection between foreign policy

and gender equality. By the end of this class these students under-stood the balance of power!

We caught up with Edgar Escalante, an LHS graduate who serves as head coach of the boy’s soccer team. Recently, the team earned a hard-fought 3-3 tie with powerhouse Andover High School behind two goals from team captain Ky Ton.I have been coaching soccer for about seven years in the city of Lawrence, and at first it started as a hobby but when I saw how much the kids in this city did not know about the sport, it became my priority to build a strong soccer program. When I moved to this country from my native country Guatemala, I played on the Lawrence High School Varsity team for three years.I have a great passion for this sport, and I coach soccer almost every day. I’m around soccer teams all week working hard on improving the soccer youth of

Lawrence to build a strong high school team. We have great talent in this city but we need more people with the same drive and great dedication to make all that talent stand out and grow. The outlook for this season is to play hard work hard and enjoy the time we get on the field. I am trying to build a program in which the kids on the team are caring, passionate, determined, and I am trying to form a family that will never grow apart. My captains are seniors Xavier Sanchez and Ky Ton and junior Daller Ucles. Everyone on this team is a team leader but I have given these athletes, Xavier Sanchez, Ky Ton, Daller Ucles, Emerson Chillel, and Adolfo Rodriguez the responsibility of always being positive, always being on time to practices, and being role models for the other

kids on the team. My goal for this team is to form a team that can play together and a team that gives their best on the field, and most importantly a team that enjoys the time they get to play. My goal for team building is to have the kids socialize off the field and get to know each other not just as athletes but also as students. I want them engaged in activities in which they see each other off the field, such as volunteering for Beyond Soccer, going out to eat as a team, or attending homework help. This will help bring this team together. I want to remind all high school athletes that no matter what sport you are playing it is very important to work hard not only on the field or on the court but also in the classroom. Let’s go Lancers!

Psychology Interns Enrich LHS

In August, 2016 six Tufts Univer-sity and one William James Col-lege graduate school psychology students began the academic year as School Psychology trainees in the Lawrence Public Schools. Under the leadership of Dr. Paul Koppenhaver, Principal on Spe-cial Assignment and Director of Behavioral Health Services and Dr. Ann Bergin Hall, Lead Psy-chologist, these graduate students will be working with our school

psychology staff to provide an ar-ray of services across the District. On the High School campus, Jes-sica Langley and Andrew Paschal, both third year students, will be providing counseling, group counseling and mentoring ser-vices. Kacie Quick, Nikki Graham and Deanna Ezzio are working in Dr. Hall’s office and are perform-ing assessments, group and indi-vidual counseling, coaching and mentoring, professional devel-

opment and teacher consultation services. Jonathan Bocanegra is working at the Arlington School Complex and Craig Carpenter is working at the School for Ex-ceptional Studies and the Oliver Partnership School; both provide assessment, counseling and as-sessment services.

Nuñez Receives Hispanic Heritage Award

On Friday October 14, 10GA English teacher Yulissa Nunez was presented with the Hispanic Heritage Award by the City of Lawrence in recognition of her work in education. Nunez is pictured receiving the award from Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera. A 2010 graduate of BMF, Nunez earned her undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross and is enrolled in the Master’s program at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. In addition to teaching, she coaches cross country and track at the middle school level and is active with the Common Sage community writing group. She read this speech at the Hispanic Heritage Awards at City Hall:

I don't coach to win games and I don't teach to pass tests. I do what I do out of love, responsibility and respect for myself, my family and most importantly our community. There are many youth in this city working hard to achieve their dreams. Sometimes they may be lost or confused and unsure of how to get things done. My job is to not only help them find the resources but also help them become self-sufficient. Lawrence is a place of promise and opportunity. When you work hard and understand how to get and create your own resources, life in this city becomes not only easier, but also a blessing. For the past three years I've helped youth become stronger

readers, writers and athletes so that they too can be part of a confident and successful Lawrence legacy. My journey continues to teach me that consistency and hope will always create a brighter outcome. I expect all students and athletes to reach their full potential and remain hopeful even when I see them slacking or unprepared or disrespectful. Everyday I am

consistent and everyday they are consistent with me. When we are in practice or in my classroom everyone works hard. They forget the negativity in their life and replace that negativity with ambition and determination in completing what they can control. My hope is that when they move on from my class or age out of my team, they take with them a sense of consistency and hope so that all that they do is done with determination and perseverance. Thank you.

Last Wednesday, October 19, the staff of BMF/MST collaborated with Gear Up to put together a college presentation for their seniors. Fitchburg State, North-ern Essex Community College, Boston University, Lasell College and the University of Massachu-setts at Lowell each pitched their schools to the seniors. Many student were excited to meet the Admissions directors and the people who would read their college essays.

GEAR UP COLLEGE PRESENTATION

Approximately 60 LHS students participated in the ASVAB test given here in the Lecture Hall on September 21. This test will help students understand what careers they may excel at after high school and links to tools on the website to create an action plan for their fu-ture. For those students interest-ed in military service, the scores from the assessment can also be used to qualify for the Armed Forces.Do I have to join the military if I take the ASVAB? Absolutely not! The ASVAB can be a great tool for students who are unsure about their career paths. Talking to a recruiter and sharing your scores is completely voluntary. What is a passing score on the

ASVAB test? There is no passing or failing the ASVAB Test- only how well you have developed certain skills; identifying your strength and places you need more practice. Also, these scores will not affect your school grades. How much does this cost? The exam and the online tools are FREE to students and schools! How many times can I take the ASVAB? You can take the ASV-AB once or multiple times. Some students opt to take the test in the fall and again in the spring to see if their scores improve.

I took the test, so now what? The ASVAB results will be re-turned to you through Lawrence High in two-three weeks. There will be an overall score reported as a percentile between 1-99. The results are also broken down

into sections to tell you what skills you excel at. There will be an opportunity to review the scores with a staff person when the re-ports return. There will also be an access code on your score report that will allow you access to online resources to help you explore careers that interest you. When can I take the ASVAB? Lawrence High may be offering a Spring 2017 test if enough stu-dents are interested, so let you Guidance Counselor know!

CSI WORKSHOP INSPIRES STUDENTS

Recently, Law-rence High School classes benefitted from a CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) workshop con-ducted by North-ern Essex Com-munity College. Science Professor Mike Cross and Criminal Justice Professor Paul Cavan collaborat-ed on workshops in Matt Pierange-li and Meg

Ansley’s Upper School classes, demonstrating their techniques for students who might be interest-ed in careers in science or crim-inal justice. “It gave students a hands-on expe-rience with lab testing, and it was great to see them applying what they had learned in class” said Pierangeli.

Ansley noted “It was interesting to see that some of the students who were most engaged in the process are ones who are not al-ways that confi-dent in class, and they had really good things to share.”
