EMERGENCY RESPONSEThe Directorate General of Civil Defence, Dubai, demonstrated at GITEX Technology Week how it isdeploying drones to respond more effectively inemergency situations. Deploying video solutionsfrom Avaya, the drones can fly over an incident suchas a fire or traffic accident, and provide live videofeedback to the headquarters control room of DubaiCivil Defence. The solution has been implementedby ConnectIT, an Avaya partner and part of theLibatel group. The project follows a landmark agreement

between Dubai Civil Defence and Avaya last year, with Dubai Civil Defence becoming the first globalcustomer for the Avaya Equinox unifiedcommunications platform, enabling it to integratedifferent communications channels. The latestupgrade to its drone fleet will use the same Avayainfrastructure to create consistency across theDirectorate’s communications functions. Bycombining Internet of Things (IoT) applicationswith video communication tools, the drones canshare real-time information with other mobiledevices, while staff at the control room can gainfaster insight into emergency situation and respondmore effectively.“One of our key responsibilities to the public is to

remain fully alert while managing our resourceseffectively and efficiently in facing emergency

situations. By collecting real-time video informationfaster and sharing that intelligence across morechannels, we are better able to help Dubai progresstowards its goal of becoming the happiest city in theworld and achieve its Smart Vision goals,” saidColonel Ali Hassan Al Mutawa, assistant director ofSmart Services Department at Dubai Civil Defence.“Avaya has long supported government officials

around the world to improve emergency responsecapabilities and increase user happiness with those services. We are proud to be cooperating withDubai Civil Defence once again to help theDirectorate to identify and resolve citizen issuesquickly and efficiently across more channels andwith more data than ever before,” said Jim Chirico, chief executive officer, Avaya.

deploy defence mechanisms toprotect critical industry systemsand infrastructure.

According to analysis byKaspersky Labs, oil and gasaccounted for around 25 per centof targets of the NotPetyaransomware attack in June.Recent reports predict the MiddleEast cyber security market willgrow from US$11.38bn in 2017to US$22.14bn by 2022.

“Cybercrime is a seriousproblem for any business, butrecent incidents raise concernsthat oil and gas companies will behigh-priority targets for attacks,”said Christopher Hudson, president – Global Energy atADIPEC organisers dmg events.

“The Security in Energyconference provides a robustdiscussion specific to the needsof this industry, helpingcompanies ensure that strongdefences are in place.”

The conference will deliverthe latest market intelligence inenergy security protocols, andplaces a spotlight on the bestinnovations, security practices

and crisis planning within the industry.

Specific conference sessionswill cover key topics includingransomware; the internet ofthings (IoT); the convergence ofoperating technology and IT;security and compliance risks incloud computing; riskmanagement for supply chainand business continuity and theuse of big data and analytics.Keynote addresses will focus onthe balance between investmentand risk, and the impact ofregional collaboration on oil andgas security, with discussions toinclude both defensive andoffensive approaches to security.

There will be a significantdiscussion of threats to criticalinfrastructure, where attackscould cause widespreadoperational disruption and safetyrisks. It will offer insights intoand front-line protectionstrategies, whether for newsystems, or by retrofitting ofexisting industrial controlsystems to build secure andresilient operations.

There will also be a dedicatedSecurity in Energy zone withinthe ADIPEC exhibition halls.

“Illicit cyber activity is here tostay,” said Don Randall, formerhead of Security and chiefinformation security officer forthe Bank of England, who will besharing his expertise during theconference. “But understandingthe motivation of theperpetrators, with appropriateresponses and education, cansubstantially reduce the risk and harm.”

The list of speakers will featureleading figures from organisationstasked with tackling cybercrime inthe Middle East, including AhmedAlshemaly, director, CyberDefense Centre, NationalElectronic Security Authority(NESA), United Arab Emirates;Eng. Ibrahim AlShamrani, executive director of Operations,National Cyber Security Center,Ministry of Interior, Saudi Arabia;and Mohammed Bushlaibi, forensic analyst,Telecommunications RegulatoryAuthority (TRA), United ArabEmirates. They will speakalongside renowned internationalexperts.

According to Accenture’s HighPerformance Security 2016Report, 96 cyberattacks werereported over 12 months by oiland gas company heads, while 55per cent of oil and gas leaders saythe need to fill cybersecurity gapsin end point or network securityis their most pressing concern. The Cisco 2017 AnnualCybersecurity Report estimatesthat the frequency of ransomwareattacks is growing by around 350per cent each year. The tools toconduct an attack are easy toobtain and easy to use.

Reduction in security budgetsWhile the number of attacks isincreasing, there are concernsthat some oil and gas companieshave reduced their securitybudgets as they struggle tobalance cost and risk at a timewhen finances are under pressure, leaving themselves dangerouslyexposed. The Security in Energyconference sessions will aim tobridge this awareness gap, emphasise the importance ofbuilding a solid defence platformagainst cyber-attacks andunderstanding the fallout of anattack and its implications tobusiness.

A company’s security protocolsare generally in the capable handsof the CIO/CISO. However, inorder for the protocols to be 100per cent understood anddelivered, it is the priority of theentire organisation, from the top-down and bottom-up, to ensure asolid framework and delivery.Bridging the vocabulary gapbetween security professionalsand their CEO’s and seniormanagement teams is vital toensure they are all aligned on theever-present security risks totheir organisation.

“Reducing cost and improvingefficiency are important messagesin oil and gas today, and manycompanies are investing intechnology to reduce their costs,”said Hudson. “Keeping thattechnology safe and secure needsto be a number one priority. Itneeds to be as much a concernfor the CEO as it is for the chiefinformation officer.

“Security in Energy recognises that this is a core issuefor a modern business, and cannot be pushed into adepartmental silo.”

Focus on fire safetyFire safety, emergency responseand evacuation featured stronglyon the first day of the Forum. A‘hot’ topic was the latest amendedUAE Fire and Life Safety Code, which was addressed inpresentations by Terry Johnsonand Abhishek Chhabra fromThomas Bell-Wright InternationalConsultants. Johnson highlightedthe importance of fire engineeredsystems and guidelines related tocladding, testing and installation. He outlined how, through itsprocesses and procedures, use ofinnovative technology, engagement with residents andinvolvement in knowledge sharingforums Dubai Civil Defence hasbecome a leading civil defenceauthority globally, in line withDubai's 10X initiative. “The UAEdoes not compromise on lifesafety,” he insisted. Abhiskek Chhabra addressed

the importance of standards, testing and certification, andfactors to be aware of. Heemphasised the increased powersof government to ensure the Codeis applied and to punishstakeholders for anyinfringements, explaining that theCode more clearly defines the

responsibilities of stakeholders –developers, consultants, contractors, productmanufacturers and their agents –who have a legal responsibility tocomply with its provisions.

Speakers also highlighted theUAE's construction specificationsand faults in design, planning, building materials and structurewhich could lead to fire andaccident at site. Day 2 hosted senior

representatives of governmentauthorities in a panel discussionand keynote presentations givingprominence to what stakeholdersshould look out for, challenges inimplementing safety standards andregulations, safety leadership andmanagement, and behavioural

safety. There was a strong focus ongovernment initiatives to raisestandards, enforce regulations andimprove the competence of HSEofficers in the construction sector, against the background of buoyantconstruction activity in the run-upto Dubai Expo 2020. EMERGENCY PLANNINGWe are all impacted by the horrific events that happened inLondon, Las Vegas and Canada. After terror events and shootings, people often comment that the person(s) committing the acts hadbeen behaving strangely or radicalised to commit violence. Is thethreat coming from inside or outside your business, or caused byextreme weather or earthquake? What do you have planned?

Does your company’s human resource policy address issues ofodd behavior, isolation of persons in the workplace, handling thatunhappy customer or planned communication with employeesafter an earthquake? Do you have procedures in place to identifyhealth and performance issues before they escalate into activethreats? Do you have plans to get your employees assistance, training and support within your company and from thecommunity where you operate? A company's greatest asset andliability is their own people.

Consider developing plans that have different levels of responseand support for different categories of employees and for varioussituations. Your receptionists and front-line workers are the greatestrisk for disgruntled customers and targeted attacks. Have youconsidered parking lot attendees, who are your first line of defence?Does your receptionist have easy access to a secure location or theability to lock the front doors remotely? What are the plans toshelter or evacuate away from a threat? Remember, a fire evacuationplan is different from an active threat evacuation plan.

Finally, when was the last time you practiced any of these plans? If you have plans established, how many of your suppliers also

have similar plans? You must examine every level of your businessor organisation and the links coming in and out to ensure you havethe means to respond.

An effective approach for securitySimon Barry, managing director of Al Murabit Security Services, assesses thesecurity challenges in Iraq and offers some advice.

“The market,even in Iraq, is

becoming morecommoditised”

Simon Barry, managing director,Al Murabit Security Services

T he metaphoricaldiscussions can go on forever: What is the value in

security? How does security addvalue? And so on. The counter isalways along the lines of workingout the cost of not havingsecurity against the cost ofsecurity. The market, even inIraq, is becoming morecommoditised, which often leadsto selection being made on thebasis of bottom line item cost, rather than what it is needed forthe job in the first place. Thephrase “close the stable door afterthe horse has bolted” comes tomind, based upon a scenariowhere security has failed, afterwhich resources are thrown at aproblem that has alreadyoccurred. Prevention will alwaysbe better than cure, and morecost effective in the long run. Theother analogy is the client whokeeps asking a Jaguar dealer for asmart Jaguar, but says that heonly wants to pay for a Trabant –he ends up with the Trabant!

Value for money and theability to determine whether youare getting what you pay for andalso whether that is a qualityservice, is the key driver. Thesecurity industry is actually wellregulated; more accurately, itincludes companies who havevoluntarily submitted to

regulation. Those who have doneso are committed to standards, not just in service delivery, butalso across a greater spectrumthat includes business ethics andhuman rights. Certifying bodiesinclude UKAS, who are worldrenowned and trusted. Thiscertification comes at a price, which is what hard-nosed clientsoften tend to ignore. Even largeoil and gas companies willpublicise their ethics policiesand requirements forcompliance, often ignoring that‘doing the right’ thing willalways come at a cost for theirservice provider.

Duty of care actually meansensuring that people who are

armed, and operating in areaswhere security can become amajor issue, are effective at theirjob. You rarely get a secondchance in a crisis, so getting itright first time is not an option,it is the key to survival. Brainsrather than brawn tend to getyou out of trouble in bettershape. They also can help notgetting into it in the first place. With regard to client care, especially in areas where fightinghas not long ceased, therequirement is to get them totheir task or meeting in perfectshape to enable them to achievetheir goals, not unsettled by theantics of those who are supposedto be taking care of them.

The challenges facing peopledoing business in Iraq areconstantly evolving. Thesolutions to yesterday’s problemswill not necessarily work withtoday’s. An understanding of theenvironment, not just physicalbut also business and cultural, iskey to making progress with theminimum amount of drama.Knowing who to talk to and whatto avoid really helps: the localknowledge and know how. With margins being tighter,

efficiency is the order of the day.Ironically, the drop in oil pricehas driven that, the other side ofthe ‘do it really cheap’ coin. The‘do it really cost effectively’principle is the way forward, combining quality with value formoney; harder when margins aretight but certainly possible. Oiland gas still make up much of thedemand, but the post conflictreconstruction in Iraq andassociated logistics and activitiesof organisations like the UN and

NGOs, still require a form ofsecurity that enable them to workin high risk areas in order tomake a difference to a long-suffering population. There isinvestment going into Iraq, but it

is being more carefully managedthan it was 12 years ago.So, know your client, know

your environment and useservices that enable you to doyour job with the minimum of

risk and fuss. That in itself isvalue for money. It may be acliché, but internationalstandards combined with localknowledge and know-how are apowerful combination.

IRAQ SECURITYHarlow International and its two securityservice companies, Al Murabit Security Services(“AMS-91”) and Al Thaware Security Services(“ATS-109”), have been awarded the ISO9001:2015 accreditation. They are the first andonly Iraqi security companies to be awarded thisstandard by a UKAS accredited body. The globally recognised benchmark is the

highest accreditation for quality managementsystems (QMS), and Harlow Internationalendeavours to continue delivering exceptionalclient service through best practise across itsgroup of companies. Raymond Macfarlane,QHSE manager at Harlow International said,“Our award of the ISO 9001:2015accreditation shows our commitment to theconsistent and continuous improvement of

our standards in terms of our internalprocesses, sustainable practices andoperational efficiencies in order to providethe best service there is in Iraq.” The ISO 9001 is only awarded to

organisations who reach the highest qualityand management standards, and as theinternational benchmark for a qualitymanagement system enables HarlowInternational to demonstrate its consistentability to provide high quality services thatmeet client needs. “Harlow International and its security

companies have come a long way in the lastthree years. We have built the business into acompany that international corporations andgovernments can turn to as their sole supplierof in-country turnkey services. We are

extremely proud to have gained the next stepon the international standards ladder; this is aclear testament to our dedication to quality,”commented Simon Barry, managing directorof security services. Harlow International is an Iraqi-owned

business working across security, manpower, life support, defence, construction, government services and the media. Harlowoperates primarily in Iraq with businessdevelopment offices in London, Dubai, andKorea. ATS and AMS are notable amongsecurity providers in Iraq for being entirelyIraqi owned with 95 per cent of theirworkforce being local staff, with experiencedinternational management. Protecting crowded spaceAre terror attacks preventable, and can we lessen the impact when they do occur? A new white paper fromRestrata addresses the topic of protecting crowded space.

“Creating securitywithin crowded

and public spacesstarts with an

acceptance thatthis is a shared

challenge”

20

In the Middle East, we seecrowded public spaces allaround us, from shopping

malls to events held in publiclyopen venues.

What we rarely think of as weenjoy these crowded publicspaces, are the security risksassociated with them. We try notto imagine how our open, freeand fun areas could be comprisedby such risks.

Today, the security risks arevery real. Terrorists are targetingthe places we hold dear, focusingon causing maximum damage toplaces we all frequent and enjoy.

Are such attacks arepreventable? And could we lessenthe impact when they do occur?

Creating security withincrowded and public spaces startswith an acceptance that this is ashared challenge, which thereforerequires a collective response.Security is achievable with aholistic and considered approach. Here, we set out an exampleusing a stadium as the focus ofour protected space.

Designing in security If security is addressed at the

planning and design phases, it isfar easier to incorporate afoundation of physical andtechnical security that lends itself

to the operational managementof the stadium. A securityconsultant considers not only theproperty itself, but the widermasterplan and surroundinglandscape, to identify potentialthreats and recommend solutionsto mitigate the risks.

At Restrata, our first activitywhen considering a new project isto conduct a Security RiskAssessment (SRA) to ensure thatany security design provided, orsolution delivered, is founded ona risk based approach. The SRAprovides the protection objectivesfor the design and is critical inthe sense that it enables us tofully implement mitigationscommensurate to the threatlevels.

Creating buy-in There is nothing worse thanarriving at a stadium for an eventand being confronted with aqueue, or a rule regarding whatyou can or cannot bring inside.Security of public spaces will onlywork if we adopt an ‘in it togetherapproach’. This means not onlypromoting the requirements ofsecurity, but also, for example, encouraging people to leavelarger bags at home. We mustpush these messages on social

media platforms, and alsoprovide clarity on the reasons forthe measures. The public will buyinto initiatives if they can see aclear and justified reason fordoing so. Just turning up at thestadium to be told ‘no large bags’,will not help champion securityinitiatives amongst the public.

Extended public spaceRecently, many of the attacks in

crowded spaces have nothappened in the centre of avenue, but on the periphery, yethave still caused significantdamage and loss of life.

By understanding therequirements for security in thepublic space and approachesaround the venue, we can beginto look at ways in which we canprotect these spaces and alsoprovide information to assist inthe protection of the innerlayers/venue.

Simple measures such as‘spotters’ or ‘crowd controlpersonnel’ can and should betrained to identify suspiciousbehaviour, and to promotesecurity messages to the public, contributing to the ‘buy-in’journey and promoting a securespace for all. Technologies canalso be used in these spaces to

identify anomalies, knownpersons of interest and to providesome early warning signs of asecurity threat through standoffscreening.

Be tech-savvy Attacks on crowded spaces areparticularly challenging becauseof the security challengesassociated with picking out a solemalicious individual from a largecrowd of people. It takes just oneindividual with the right access tocause catastrophic harm, andperpetrators tend to target ourpublic spaces, where it is difficultto lock down access or restrictfreedom of movement. A plethora of technology

solutions and security systems

currently available in the marketcan support measures outlinedabove. The key question is “Whichsolution is the right solution?”It is apparent that to secure a

crowded space well, a certaindegree of technology will berequired. Working with a securityconsultancy that has experience inintegrating security systems inyour industry and region is nodoubt the best option for ensuringyou get the right information andultimately the best fit solution foryour space. Data and informationsharing is also critical to mitigatingattacks and managing an incidentif it does occur. Provisions shouldbe in place with reliablecommunications technology, toensure emergency

communications between those onthe ground and emergencyservices is swift and uninterrupted.Additionally, this should besupported with the right plans andprocedures, and the relevanttraining for your teams.

What if? What to do if we DO identifysomething suspicious? Protectionof space means ensuring that awell-considered concept ofoperations (CONOPS) has beenprepared, and that procedures todeal with things that are out ofthe ordinary are not only inplace, but understood by theteam. When the spotter spotssomething suspicious, what dothey do about it? If the public are

bought in to the idea of notbringing large bags to a stadium, what can they bring? If we moveparking facilities away from astadium to provide a largerstand-off area from IED attack, have we considered the othersecurity risks that come frommovement of people in and outof the venue? The security teamresponsible for the venue/eventmust prepare the CONOPS tothink through these questionsand scenarios.

Major simulated exercises Thinking through questions andscenarios to generate a CONOPsis only one half of the process. How will your security team andwider staff react in the event of amajor incident that threatenslives? It is fundamental that youtest your operational team toensure they understand theprocedures in place, evacuationroutes and wider aspects ofemergency response. As with allareas of life, practice akes perfect. A holistic approach to security

is vital to ensure that the correctpreventative measures andprocedures are in place, and thatthis strategy is tested with majorsimulated exercises to identifyany broken links in the chain. It has never been more

important to protect ourcrowded spaces. The threatlandscape is continuouslychanging, and so must ourapproach to securing thosespaces if we are to keep thepotential attacker guessing, and ifwe are to have any chance ofmitigating attack.

Workplace injuriesand fatalitiesClyde & Co LLP were delighted to present at the 3rd Annual Health, Safety & Security Forum in Dubai on 9 October 2017.

“The police have thepower to arrest

and/or confiscatethe passports of

anyone they deemresponsible for the

incident. These will,in our experience,

often be those withthe job titles ‘site

manager’ or ‘safetymanager’, for

example”

The mock Public Prosecutor interview

T he main focus of thesession was a practicaldemonstration of a Public

Prosecutor interview following aworkplace injury or fatality, basedon our real life experiences of thisaspect of the criminalinvestigation process. In the fictional scenario, a

labourer on a construction sitehad entered a closed area (Phase1) unnoticed during his break, and went to take a nap in ashedded area next to a temporaryaccess point, which was notindicated by signage. He fell

through the access point, and hadnot been wearing a helmet orPPE as he was on a break. Hisbody was found by securityseveral hours later. He died as aresult of his injuries and lyingundiscovered for six hours.Dubai Municipality and Dubai

Police conducted an investigationand questioned the projectmanager, who had not been onsite at the time, and the sitesupervisor of Phase 2, before thecase was passed to the PublicProsecutor. The DubaiMunicipality engineer had

determined there were threecauses of the labourer’s death: theconstruction company had nosupervisory control to ensureindividuals did not enter thePhase 1 sites; there wasinadequate signage to preventpeople entering that area of thesite; and the company had laxcontrol of its labourers on site. The Public Prosecutor thereforewished to interview the projectmanager and site supervisor. Two alternative scenarios of the

Public Prosecutor interviews werepresented (one “good” and one

“bad”) which illustrated thefollowing key learning points:

Police investigation There is no codified processdictating how a policeinvestigation should be carriedout following a workplaceincident. Generally, the policewill attend the scene and speakto and take statements fromrelevant witnesses.

The police have the power to arrest and/or confiscate the passports of anyindividuals they deemresponsible for the incident. This will, in our experience, often be those with the jobtitles of "site manager" or"safety manager" for example.

The police will prepare a reportbased on the evidence gatheredat the scene beforerecommending that either nocharges be brought or, morecommonly, that the case bereferred to the Public Prosecutorfor further investigation.

Statements provided to thepolice at this stage will bereferred to and usedthroughout the remainder ofthe criminal investigationprocess. It is thereforeimportant that a coordinatedand strategic approach is takenfrom the outset.

The immediate aftermath of anincident will invariably behectic and, understandably, emotionally charged. Inaddition to the police, there willoften be multiple authorities onsite such as Dubai Municipalityand/or Civil Defence.

It is therefore prudent to agreean emergency responseprocedure in advance so thatstaff are aware of their roles, rights and responsibilities inthe aftermath of an incident.

Simple practical steps taken atthis stage of the criminalinvestigation process canimpact significantly on theoverall outcome. For example,we would generallyrecommend that someone beappointed to attend allinterviews to ensure oversightover the information providedto the authorities.

Clyde & Co's Health and Safetyteam regularly work withcompanies to provide trainingon this aspect of the processand to prepare emergencyresponse procedures.

Public Prosecutor investigation The Public Prosecutor willsummon those deemedresponsible by the police (andany other persons they deem tobe of interest) for an interview.

The interview will beconducted entirely in Arabic.Translators can and should berequested where needed. Inaddition, interviewees can, andin our view should, beaccompanied to the interviewby their legal representativeand an Arabic speaker.

In our experience, PublicProsecutor interviews aregenerally relatively short andthe interviewee will haverelatively limited opportunityto give a detailed explanationof the incident.

We often see issues arisingwhere individualsinadvertently acceptresponsibility for an incidentor speculate as to the cause ofan incident or whereresponsibility might lie.

Being prepared for the PublicProsecutor interview andknowing what to expect istherefore important. Clyde &Co's Health and Safety team

works with companies andindividuals to support with this.

Criminal Court process If the Public Prosecutor electsto charge the accused, the casewill be referred to the CriminalCourt.

In the UAE there are threestages of court; the Court ofFirst Instance, the Court ofAppeal and the Court ofCassation (in Dubai and Ras alKhaimah) or the SupremeCourt (all other Emirates)

The court system in the UAE isdifferent to that in the homejurisdictions of many ex-patriates. For example, oftenthose involved in the courtprocess are surprised at thelimited opportunity to giveoral evidence.

The key features of litigation in the UAE criminal courts are as follows: Each stage will be made up ofa number of short hearingsconducted in Arabic;

 Given the lack of oral evidence,written pleadings are key andconsiderable attention must begiven to their contents;

Where written pleadings aresupported by documentaryevidence, this evidence must belegally translated into Arabic.

Witnesses may be called (acourt appointed translator willbe present where the witness isa non-Arabic speaker); and

The Court may elect toappoint an expert at any stage.

SummaryThe steps taken by a company andits employees in the immediateaftermath of a workplace injuryor fatality and during the PublicProsecutor investigation can havea significant impact on the outcomebefore the criminal court.

It is therefore critical thatcompanies are prepared forworkplace incidents and have inplace an emergency responseprocedure. This should includecontacting their appointed legalrepresentative as soon as possibleso that a coordinated andstrategic approach can be takenfrom the outset. Often Clyde & Co's Health and

Safety team will be instructed at alater stage, once the matterreaches the criminal court.Unfortunately, things may thenhave been said and/or documents handed over whichare ultimately used against theaccused at court.Of course, sometimes

individuals will need to takeresponsibility for workplaceincidents and, in such cases, criminal liability is likely tofollow. However, inexperience ofthe criminal investigation processcan lead to liability beingattributed in circumstances whereit should not, and where it couldpotentially have been avoided. Clyde & Co's Health and Safety

team regularly supportscompanies with the criminalinvestigation process following aworkplace injury or fatality. This article is intended to give

some practical guidance on theprocess and our best practicerecommendations. It is notintended to be a complete guideto the criminal investigationprocess and should not be reliedupon as legal advice.

O il rigs are inherentlydangerous places; insuch a highly volatile

environment with flammablehydrocarbons, it’s imperative thatsafety comes above all else.Gas detection is an essential

part of that process, to counterfire and even explosions, and it’san area that has benefited greatlyfrom technology breakthroughs.Methane leaks, for instance, are

literally explosive situations. UK-based Crowcon’s lightweight andcompact Laser Methane mini(LMm), allows leaks to bedetected at a distance of nearly100ft, ensuring operators can staywell clear of any hazards. The unit remotely monitors for

leaks from above-ground riserpipes, and can check valves, fittings and pipes inside pressureregulating stations. Because thelaser beam penetrates transparentsurfaces, such as glass, it can evendetect methane through awindow. This can remove theneed to find whoever has the keyor enter a potentially hazardous

environment in order to surveyfor leaks. It is also used formonitoring closed premises orconfined spaces. Suchinnovations – for single gases ormultiple gases – are alreadyhelping improve worker safety onrigs across the Middle East andbeyond.

Increased popularityNot surprisingly, portable gas

detection has increased inpopularity, not only because ofthe improved technology behindit, but also because of itsversatility, making it ideal forsmall spaces, spot leak testing andmobile use. Other leading playersin this field include Germany’sDräger and Honeywell Analytics.Honeywell’s GasAlert

MicroClip is a popular handheldmulti-gas detection deviceroutinely used by oil workers, and boasts a strong battery lifethat is guaranteed to run anentire shift even at extremetemperatures. Simple readings, like its flashing green IntelliFlash

light, show compliance at aglance, with operatives able tosimultaneously monitor for up tofour gases (including includingoxygen, combustibles and toxicgases). It is small, easy to use andreliable – all things the oil andgas industry demands.Other more mainstream

technology – including mobilephones – is also playing a role inconnecting with more fixed gasdetection technology. SensepointXCL is a wall-mounted devicethat monitors for hazardouslevels of specific gases such ascarbon monoxide, ammonia ormethane and is pared with asmartphone using adownloadable app. “Controlling the detector from

a mobile device not only makesthe devices easier to install andmaintain, it allows users toquickly and easily producereports needed to meet safetyand environmental regulations,”said Duncan Gooch, productmanager at Honeywell Industrial Safety.

Footwear is one place wheremost wearers can flaunt theirstyle and raise their own Sitecred. Two types of shoe are commontrends now, with both thetraditional boot and trainer stylesafety footwear being in fashionat the moment. DeWalt offerboth of these types of shoes, suchas the Apprentice, a heavy duty, popular tan boot, using nubuckand full grain leather uppers.Alternatively, for lighterindustrial use, the Jointer trainerhas a composite toe cap and anEVA midsole. These two type ofshoes cover a wide range of usesand applications, but do notcompromise style or safety.

These are just a few examplesof fashionable PPE that workersaround the world are using toincrease their sitecred whilemaintaining safety. There havebeen critics of fashionable PPE,stating that it can be distracting, increasing risk, but manymanufacturers are movingtowards good-looking PPE andworkwear, as it more attractiveclothing and accessories are morelikely to be worn as it has anaesthetic appeal for someworkers. The jury is still out on

the real-world benefits, but thetrend in the market showsthat more and more

workwear will look lesslike PPE and safety wear, and sitecred will bearound for some time.

The rise of 'sitecred' Workwear is safer than it ever has been, and now looks better than it has ever done, says Kestell Duxbury.
