Greetings and Salutations All:

I hope that the beginning of this

Spring season finds you and yours all

well. This is THE weather for us to

ride...ride...ride. It’s not too cold, though I think we only

have MAYBE a month in Houston where you could consid-

er it too ‘cold’ to ride. You boys in Idaho, not so much, sor-

ry.

However, ‘nuff about the cold stuff, as I sit writing this the Vernal,

or Spring, Equinox is just around the corner, from here on out the

days get longer and the nights get shorter. That just means more

time for riding..

This is my first attempt at the newsletter. I’m open to changes so

any ideas or suggestions feel free to shoot them my way.

Please remember this is your association newsletter.

Let us know what you think...

Send your suggestions, news articles, photos, rides, events, etc…

Marines,

This shall be my last letter to you as the President of our Association. In May, Glenn Paschall shall be

taking the helm as the President of our Association. I hope you will all join me in supporting our in-

coming President and his Board of Officers.

I won’t reminisce about all that has been accomplished over the last two years and the great strides

we have taken in making our Association as professionally organized as possible.

Those efforts and accomplishments could not have been done without the tireless efforts of the other

members of the Board, but most of all, could not have been done without your support and belief in my vision for our As-

sociation.

I thank each of your for all of your support that was given both publicly and privately. You gave me strength at trying

times and kept me grounded when I was ready to fly off in a direction that I should not go.

I would continue to urge each of you to look deep within yourself for your reason in having joined our Association and

then expand upon it personally to make us stronger than ever. Growth shall continue to be our challenge in the future as it

has always been in the past. However, we are MARINES and can conquer any and all challenges.

I now look forward to just getting back to enjoying what we are all about………..Marines sharing in the sport of motorcy-

cling and in supporting Veterans and their causes.

God Bless and Semper Fi,

Oso

Texas Update

By: Gunny

On April 3rd Association members and Friends of the Association took a leisurely trip to Brenham. The ride was led by Gun-

ny with Connie on the back seat from Top Brass Military Surplus. Members included Shanghai and Emma Cullen, Magnum

and Gloria Harrison, Buck and Thundercloud Snyder. Gunny’s son-in-law Brian Driscoll, and two potential members Stepani

Smith and Rickey Wooley joined the members.

The weather was great for riding and made the trip more enjoyable. We rode up highway 290 and took a back-country detour

on FM 362 to FM 1488 then to FM 1736 and the back to Highway 290 with a brief stop to enjoy the Bluebonnets. We arrived

at the Brenham Municipal Airport and had chow at the Southern Flyer, a great 1950’s style diner where the waitresses were

dressed in poodle skirts and saddle shoes to put a little more authenticity to the ‘50’s theme.

There were several motorcyclists there too. Obviously this is a popular eatery!!

Due to weather Iowa Company Alpha had it's March meeting April 6th.

The meeting was held in Pella, IA at the Sports Page.

The highlight of the meeting was patching in two new members.

Carl Evans and Don Houk. Carl and Don are both Desert Storm Veterans and half of our membership already knew

them.

It was an easy decision to vote them in.

The group discussed upcoming opportunities to combine riding and charities along with the numerous Patriot Guard mis-

sions that

are being requested.

We also discussed our feelings on honorary member to boost membership as was previously brought up by the Texas

group.

Our feeling is that we are in favor of allowing honorary members on a very strict and stringent basis only offering it to

those

that exemplify everything that is our Association represents. We have always invited these types of riders to join us on

rides.

We are waiting to hear what Texas has decided to do.

Our first order of our own shirts were delivered and handed out. These shirts have far less ink in the design and will be

more

comfortable in the summer months. Plus they were changed to a 2 color design resulting in less cost in printing.

U. S. Marines - Semper Fidelis Veterans Motorcycle Association

10 April 1959: Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. was named as one of the original seven Project Mercury astro-nauts selected for space training. The seven astronauts, all volunteers, were selected by NASA from an initial group of 110 leading military test pilots. Three years later, on 20 February 1962, Col Glenn would become the first American to orbit the Earth.

12-13 April 1918: Marines of the 4th Brigade suffered their first gas attack on the night and early morning hours of 12-13 April when the Germans bombarded the 74th Company, 6th Marines near Verdun with mustard gas. Nine Marine officers and 305 enlisted Marines were gassed and evacuated, and 30 Marines died from the effects of the gas shells which hit in the middle of the reserve area cantonments in which they were sleeping.

15 April 1962: Marine Corps operational involvement in the Vietnam War began on Palm Sunday when HMM-362 with its Sikorsky UH-34s arrived at Soc Trang in the Delta south of Saigon. The task unit was called "Shufly" and its first operational employment involved lifting Vietnamese troops into battle.

18 April 1983: One Marine Security Guard was killed and seven were wounded when a large car bomb exploded just outside the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Lance Corporal Robert McMaugh was standing guard at Post 1, just in-side the front entrance when the bomb exploded outside the door. The explosion killed 61 people including 17 Ameri-cans. LCpl McMaugh was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on 26 April.

21 April 1951: Marine carrier-based airplanes made their first aerial contact with enemy planes over the Korean front lines. Captain Philip C. Delong shot down two YAK fighters and 1st Lieutenant Harold D. Daigh destroyed one more and damaged another in the heavily defended Pyongyang-Chinnanpo area. Both pilots were with VMF-312 flying from the USS Bataan.

27 April 1805: First Lieutenant Presley N. O'Bannon, who with seven other Marines was part of a force of Greeks and Arabs led by American Consul William Eaton, raised the United States flag for the first time over a conquered fortress of the Old World at Derne, a stronghold of the Tripolitan pirates. Two Marines were killed and one wounded in the as-sault on the walled city.

28 April 1993: The last A-6E Intruder departed from Marine Corps service. Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 332 transferred the last Marine A-6E to St. Augustine, Florida, and prepared for the squadron's transition to the F/A-18D and eventual movement from Cherry Point to Beaufort, South Carolina.

Selected May Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance

2 May 1946: Marines from Treasure Island Marine Barracks, under the command of Warrant Officer Charles L. Buck-ner, aided in suppressing the three-day prison riot at Alcatraz Penitentiary in San Francisco Bay. WO Buckner, a veter-an of the Bougainville and Guam campaigns, ably led his force of Marines without suffering a single casualty.

5 May 1983: In Beirut, Lebanon, a UH-1N helicopter carrying the commander of the American peace-keeping force, Colonel James Mead, was hit by machine gun fire. The six Marines aboard escaped injury. Colonel Mead and his crew had taken off in the helicopter to investigate artillery and rocket duels between rival Syrian-backed Druze Moslem mili-tiamen and Christian Phalangists that endangered French members of the multinational force.

8 May 1995: In the wake of the most devastating storm to hit the New Orleans area in more than 200 years, a group of Marines and sailors from Marine Forces Reserve demonstrated the quick response synonymous with the Navy/Marine Corps team. Within 24 hours of being called, Marines assisted in the evacuation of 2,500 civilians, and Navy corpsmen treated scores of flood victims.

10 May 1945: The 22d Marines, 6th Marine Division, executed a pre-dawn attack south across the Asa River Estuary and seized a bridgehead from which to continue the attack toward Naha, the capital of Okinawa.

15 May 1862: Corporal John Mackie, the first Marine to earn the Medal of Honor, was commended for service in the USS GALENA during action against Confederate shore batteries at Drewry's Bluff which blocked the James River ap-proaches to Richmond.

16 May 1945: The 22d and 29th Marines continued the attack against Half Moon Hill, a day characterized by the 6th Marine Division as the "bitterest" of the Okinawa campaign. By the 18th, the famed "Shuri line" had been broached.

22 May 1912: First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham, the first Marine officer to be assigned to "duty in connection with aviation" by Major General Commandant William P. Biddle, reported for aviation training at the Naval Aviation Camp at Annapolis, Maryland, and Marine aviation had its official beginning.

23 May 1988: The V-22 Osprey, the world's first production tilt-rotor aircraft, made its debut during rollout ceremonies at Bell Helicopter Textron's Arlington, Texas, facility. More than 1,000 representatives from the military, industry, and media, gathered to hear various speakers, including Gen Alfred Gray, Commandant of the Marine Corps, praise the versatile rotor craft designed to meet the needs of 21st Century battlefields.

26 May 1969: Operation Pipestone Canyon began when the 1st Battalion, 26th Marines and 3d Battalion, 5th Marines began sweeps in the Dodge City/Go Noi areas southwest of Da Nang. It terminated at the end of June with 610 enemy killed in action at a cost of 34 Marines killed.

29 May 1991: Elements of a joint task force that included the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade departed the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Bangladesh after nearly two weeks of disaster relief operations following a devastating cyclone. The joint task force delivered tons of relief supplies using helicopters, C-130s, and landing craft in Operation Sea An-gel.

Getting to Know You

By: Frosty

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know your-

self but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy

nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. - Sun Tzu

I hate doing these; well I guess the beginning is as good a place as any. My name is Marcus W. Brast I was

born on 3 July 1970 in Houston, Texas. I grew up in Katy, Texas (a small suburb of Houston). My parents have lived

in the same house for since I was about 2 years old. I went to West Memorial Elementary and Junior High Schools. I

graduated from Katy High School in 1988. After graduating high school I attended Stephen F. Austin State University

in Nacogdoches, TX. I graduated from Stephen F. Austin in 1992 with double majors in Criminal Justice and Sociolo-

gy.

In 1993 I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps I served in Okinawa, Japan

(MACG-18 on MCAS Futenma); New Orleans, Louisiana (MARFORRES on NSA New Orleans); and Yuma, Arizo-

na (MAG-13 on MCAS Yuma). While in the Marine Corps my primary MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) was

that of an Intelligence Analyst (0231) and I also had a secondary MOS of Information Systems Coordinator (9986).

My clearance and job necessitated that I attend the U.S. Navy SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape)

course in Coronado, California. While stationed in New Orleans I met the woman who was to become my wife, Josie

Weisberg.

Josie and I met in either October or December of 1996 (depending on who you talk to) and were married in

July of 1997. In December of 1997 we had our first daughter Isabel Anastasia. In February of 1999 we had our se-

cond daughter Gabrielle Alexandra (Gabby). In December of 1999 we had our third daughter Rhiannon Abiageal

(Ahni).

I got out of the Marine Corps in October of 2000 and went to work for a cellular phone service provider in

California as their IT support for the West Coast (California, Arizona and Alaska). In June of 2002 I was a victim of

‘downsizing’ and lost my job. My family and I re-located to Texas. After a brief bit of time and a lot of looking and

even more luck, I found the job in Houston, TX were I now work. I work for an environmental consulting firm as

their IT Manager and Senior GIS Analyst; I fix computers and am a cartographer.
