For over 20 years, the Towe Ford/Towe Auto Museum has been educating and entertaining audiences with beautiful and interesting automobiles. A significant part of the history of the Museum was the arrival of over 100 Fords from the collection of Edward Towe. Without the collection, the Museum would most certainly not be in the position it is today. Times change, however, and the Museum no longer houses the Towe Collection. We now exhibit a much broader collection of vehicles, telling the history of the automobile from the late 1800s to electric and hydrogen vehicles of the future. Our new name represents the culmination of many years of hard work by our board, staff and volunteers. Our mission remains the same – to educate and entertain while preserving and promoting the automobile and its influence on our lives. With the new name, the Museum will see many new and exciting changes over the next year, including the recent hiring of the Museum’s first-ever curator, launching of a brand new website, and the introduction our 1st annual car cruise, CAMBER: “California Auto Museum’s Big Event on the Road” to be held on August 1 (more details to follow). We hope you will share this exciting news with the community and join us as we embark on the next 20+ years continuing the tradition of being the center of the city’s car-related entertainment! Carmichael – On Sunday April 26th, the blacktop of a local school parking lot will be transformed into rows of art easels and exhibits to showcase the talented works of art from seven local public and private schools. Families will come and be inspired by the vast displays of child-produced art. Local renowned professional artists Tony Natsoulas, Pat Mahoney and Kerry Van Dyke will lend their expertise, meeting and talking with the aspiring young artists. Nearly 200 pieces of art will be on display from the artist-students of: St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School, Sierra Oaks School, Presentation, Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Ignatius Parish School, Shalom School and Country Day. Aside from the face-painting, balloons and art demonstrations highlighting the festival, attendees will witness an extensive and collaborative effort of parents, schools and teachers to preserve and promote the Arts during even the toughest of economic times when budgets for the subject are in jeopardy. The schools want to cultivate an atmosphere that discovers, celebrates and nurtures the artistic gifts of their students and this is the perfect vehicle for doing that. “We want to focus on the learning connections that are made between creative efforts and inspired critical thinking, as well as problem solving skills” says Festival Organizer and St. Michael’s parent and board member Gail Halverson. “We are so moved by the participation among the schools, and are very much honored to host the event” says St. Michael’s parent Laura Lyon. The festival will run from 1pm- 4pm on Sunday April 26th, and will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School, 2140 Mission Avenue, Carmichael, 95608. Artists, faculty, parents and students will be on hand to attest their love of the Arts and how it holds an integral part in their learning environment where both scholastic and artistic achievements are sought. The show will spotlight the changing styles of button art from the 1700’s to contemporary times. Artistic movements, seen in button designs, have chronicled wars, politics, and current events. The hobby of button collecting was born during the Depression era of the 1930’s, when it became a form of inexpensive entertainment, provided by Grandma’s button box. Collecting clothing buttons is far from a mainstream hobby today, but many California collectors are finally recognizing the button as a miniature art form. Even though buttons have made a comeback in the fashion industry, as designers are embellishing the latest styles, collectors see buttons as much more than clothing fasteners. Now, these small treasures are highly valued for their outstanding workmanship and nostalgic past. You’ll find 18th Century miniature paintings under glass, and the ancient art of Neo-Classicism alongside of Art Deco and Pop Art buttons. Studio artists continue to create contemporary collectible buttons, complementing today's imported designs from around the world. Whether you collect a specific type of art, or you just want to browse and discover your passion, this show is an opportunity not to be missed! When you perceive the button as art, the creative possibilities are endless. Many collectors prefer to mount their buttons in shadow boxes (trays) to share their beauty. Grouping buttons by similar materials like glass, pearls, woods, plastics, ceramics, or enamels are striking when displayed in button trays. Be original and use picture buttons featuring subjects like architecture, children, transportation, sports, animals, or plant life, to suit your décor. You don’t have to be an artist to create a fabulous piece of button art to hang on your wall, or to change clothing into wearable button art. Most people are fascinated when they see collectible buttons for the first time, because they’re seldom seen in today’s marketplace. The California State Button Society show and sale is returning to Sacramento once again this Memorial Day weekend, due to the popularity of last year’s event. Layoff or Makeover?Dear Dave,

The company where my husband works recently told everyone that massive layoffs are coming, and they should start looking for other jobs. Right now all of his options are out-of-town. A real estate agent told us we’d have to remodel our kitchen in order to sell the house. We’ve got $3,500, but remodeling would take about $2,000. Should we get a second mortgage to get the work done?- PamelaDear Pamela,

You might want to get another opinion. Sure, a new kitchen would be nice, but is that the end-all, be-all? Either way, there’s no way I’d go into debt to make this happen. Your house isn’t even on the market yet. There’s no reason to fix up a house that’s not for sale, especially when you only have $3,500 to your name!

There is, for sure, a financial storm brewing on your horizon. Start right now living on rice and beans and saving up piles of cash to build a bigger umbrella.

Wait until he actually lands another job before you make any big decisions. What if something pops up where you are? If you end up moving, then you might take $2,000 from savings to fix up the kitchen and get the house sold. Don’t do it unless you’re going to pay cash, though! You don’t want a second mortgage hanging over your heads, making everything even more difficult. - Dave

Viatical DebacleDear Dave,

Could you explain, and comment on, investing in Viaticals? I’ve been hearing offers that guarantee 10 percent. Does that sound fishy to you?- LeeDear Lee,

Everything about Viaticals is fishy. Stay away from them! A Viatical investment is when you buy a position in a terminally ill person’s life insurance policy. Mathematically, you’re betting on when they will die. A tremendous number of scam artists are involved in these things, and even the ones who go by the book have a lot of trouble, because you really can’t predict when someone’s going to die.

Viaticals are a disaster. They’re being slammed by state attorney generals all across the country. Lots of these companies are being shut down, and most of those that are technically legitimate in this area are incompetent.

Never put money in Viaticals!- Dave

Demand Note DudDear Dave,

My parents asked me if I know anything about GMAC demand notes. Apparently, they’re thinking about getting into these to diversify their portfolio. What do you know about these, and is this a good idea?- EricDear Eric,

Your parents need to run as fast as they can from whoever is pitching this idea to them. A note is a debt. So, the next question goes something like this: Would you want to be in the position of having General Motors owe you money right now? I don’t think so!

Basically, people who invest in this kind of thing end up being creditors. Then if the company goes belly up, guess who usually doesn’t get paid? That’s right, the creditors! Plus, the company is teetering on the brink of disaster.

There’s no way I’d do this, Eric, and I’d never again take advice from the one who suggested it. This is one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard!- Dave *Please visit www.davesays.org for more financial advice.

This is Government Spending on SteroidsWashington DC – Congressman

Dan Lungren (R-CA) today (April 2) made the following statement opposing the majority’s budget proposal that spends too much, taxes too much and borrows too much, while urging members to support passage of a House Republican alternative budget solution that controls spending, creates jobs, cuts taxes, and reins in our deficits:

“Today I voted for a Republican budget alternative that would spend $4.8 trillion dollars less over ten years than the Majority’s budget

proposal. It was an alternative budget that offered solutions for middle class families, focused directly on creating jobs, tax relief, and empowering small businesses to survive and grow.

“We all agree these are very tough economic times for all Americans and their families. We must do all we can not increase taxes on small business and load more debt on the backs of every American.

“With the financial situation that faces America today, it is impossible to support a Majority budget proposal that will double the

national debt in five years and triple it in ten. Under the Majority budget proposal, government spending is accelerating at an unsustainable rate.

There are tough decisions to be made and our focus must be on growing the economy and not growing the size of government.”

Congressman Dan Lungren serves as Ranking Member on the House Administration Committee in addition to serving on the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees

Got Something To Say… By CM Ricks

As most of you know, I have been gone in Seattle for quite some time and have found that my return has uncovered a cold hard fact. Carmichael and the surrounding areas are in big trouble. I spoke with a Sacramento County Sherriff working at a local strip mall hired to protect its patrons and the store owners from the escalating violent crimes that are plaguing our area. However, what I also have been able to experience is the human love for another and watched Dr.’s move mountains to save an uninsured victim and a hospital that treated her as if she were their own member.

This week has taken me to a place in my writing that I had never expected to venture. On Tuesday evening, my sister was attacked in a local park and left for dead. A stranger found her and drove her to Kaiser on Morse Ave. The call I received at 11:00 pm from a nurse in the emergency room informed me that my sister had been the victim of a hate crime. Today, we sat in a surgery room praying for her sight to be saved. Making the phone calls to family members, changing schedules’ to be available to be by her side at the hospital, hoping that the Dr’s would fix her knowing she had no insurance created a fear in myself I have never before experienced, fear for my safety and fear of not being insured.

I went into a local Longs Drugs to fill my sister’s prescriptions and spoke with an officer from the Sacramento County Sherriff’s office who was walking through the strip mall. I asked him what has happened to our quaint little township and from there I found out that our Carmichael is not so quaint anymore. On the brighter side 95608er’s, I also found that we absolutely have the ability

to change that. Officers cannot be everywhere all the time and it is our responsibility to watch out for each other. There is nothing “TOO” small to call 911 about. We as taxpayers deserve to be safe and as neighbors, we deserve to be nosey! If a car is in front of the house across the street and you know they do not belong, call the police. They are your neighbors; they are counting on you to take care of them.

I have been able to experience what it means to be a neighbor of Kaiser and would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude. The staffs at Kaiser on Morse Ave, Point West and the eye surgery center in Rancho Cordova employ the most caring and loving group of people I have ever encountered.

As we met with Dr. Johl at Morse Avenue, he scheduled my sister for surgery at Kaiser in Rancho Cordova. I informed him that we did not have insurance and he just kept talking about what he was going to do to help her. The relief my family felt was to say the very least over whelming. As we entered the surgery center, a little nervous that at any time we were going to be advised we could not precede, Sandy the check in nurse came out smiling and there started my sisters’ glorious road to recovery. From that moment on, all the bad I had felt began to dissipate. The “There’s nowhere like home” once again began to boom in my head and I was again, elated to be back in the Carmichael area.

Well, Carmichael, I have faith in us as a community. I truly do believe that good outweighs the bad. I saw it first hand; I touched it and lived it. I promise my neighbors that if I am home and think there is something going on at your house, I will do my best to protect you and call 911, will you do the same for your neighbor? If you will, Carmichael

just may become our quaint little township we all loved so much.

Sacramento Coalition Selected for “Join ASPCA® Mission: Orange™”

Sacramento - A coalition of Sacramento animal welfare organizations today (March 9th) announced that it was one of two community coalitions from around the country chosen by The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to participate in “Join ASPCA® Mission: Orange™,” the growth phase of the ASPCA’s national campaign that provides positive outcomes for at-risk pets (ie: shelter animals).

For the next year, public and private partner animal welfare agencies, including the Sacramento County Department of Animal Care and Regulation, the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services, the Sacramento SPCA and Happy Tails Cat Rescue, will work with experts from the ASPCA and the Richmond SPCA to collect and

analyze data specific to the Sacramento community that will enable the coalition to develop and implement programs designed to increase the adoption rates of healthy animals. At the end of the year, the coalition will have the opportunity to apply to become an ASPCA Mission: Orange target community.

“We chose these communities because they have several things in common: established working relationships among the participating agencies; high volume spay/neuter programs; and leaders with a real and demonstrated passion for making positive change,” said Julie Morris, Senior Vice President of Community Outreach for the ASPCA. “The more we can replicate success in different communities, the faster we can provide a proven, sustainable approach to improving live release rates in

communities around the country.”Sacramento coalition members went

through a rigorous, competitive selection process involving detailed written applications, submission of extensive supporting documents, and interviews.

According to the ASPCA’s Todd Cramer, who directs the “Join ASPCA Mission: Orange” effort, the application process was good preparation for the year ahead. “Participating communities and partner agencies had one month to collect and record detailed animal population data using the ASPCA Mission: Orange dashboard,” said Cramer. “This information formed a detailed snapshot of the baseline year, from which ASPCA statisticians and community shelter professionals can determine which animal populations in these communities are most at risk and why.”

The Sacramento Concert Band, under the direction of Grant Parker, will be presenting a spring concert at 7:30 PM on Monday, May 11, 2009, at Christ Community Church in Carmichael. The concert is free. Christ Community Church is located at 5025 Manzanita Avenue between Winding Way and Madison Avenue.

Suspected DUI Crash Ends DeadlyOn April 3, 2009 at approximately 11:20 p.m., Michelle Dlallo, a 44 year old from Sacramento, was driving a white 1993 Nissan Sentra on eastbound Madison Avenue east of San Juan Avenue. Dlallo allowed her vehicle to travel across a raised concrete curb and into the westbound lanes of Madison Avenue. Wanda Drewitz, a 46 year old from Carmichael was driving a 2001 green Toyota pickup westbound

on Madison Avenue in the far left lane. The Nissan struck the Toyota head-on. Tonya Guillama, a 39 year old from Fair Oaks was driving a grey 2001 Kia Sportage behind the Toyota and collided with the rear of it after the first impact. Dlallo was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Hospital (MSJ) where she died from her injuries. Drewitz was also transported to MSJ with complaint of pain to

her chest. Guillama had complaint of pain and chose to seek her own medical aid. Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in this collision on Dlallo’s part; results of a toxicology report are pending. Dlallo was driving with a suspended license. Guillama was driving with an expired license. All parties involved were wearing their seatbelts. This collision is still under investigation.

by Lauren ForcellaDear Straight Talk: I am writing

about gray hair in teenagers. My 16-year-old nephew, who has an intense schedule, is noticeably gray. I thought this was a fluke, but he tells me he knows a dozen other kids the same way. In my high school days, gray hair was unheard of. Is this from stress? I have small children and would like to know the biggest stressors teens are facing. — Carol, Sebastopol CA

Megan, 20, Boston MA: I’ve had grey hair since freshman year in high school. Now, in college, my stress has skyrocketed and I have lots more. It’s definitely common. At least 30 percent of the people I know have had a grey hair or two before they reach 21.

Hannah, 17, Auburn CA: I know two guys with some gray, but all the girls dye their hair, so who knows? Biggest stress today is succeeding in school. You not only need the perfect GPA, but to get in a good college you also need sports, clubs, music, advanced-placement classes, etc. There’s no breathing space. State schools are not good enough. Good is not good enough — yet, it’s hard to be great. The push comes from parents, teachers, and mainly, ourselves.

Savannah, 15, Folsom CA: I know 5 kids with gray in their hair. The

biggest stress today is schoolwork, family drama, friendship drama. It’s totally go, go, go, no breaks.

Shelby, 17, Auburn CA: Most stress today is not from sex or drugs, it’s from our GPA. Academic standards are 10 times higher than in our parents’ time. The SAT hardly mattered then, but today it’s huge. Colleges are so competitive. Thankfully, my parents don’t pressure me. They were fine with my C in math. Yet, I think parents are the number one driving force, even if they aren’t pressuring you. Every kid wants to please his/her parents.

Rose, 14, Fair Oaks CA: I know 3 kids with gray. Distractions from electronics cause kids to put off homework, then, suddenly, there’s too much to do.

Geoff, 23, Redding CA: I had a couple of gray hairs at 18, and more since college. The biggest stressor is the stress family puts on kids to be high-achieving and get into a good college.

Anne, 15, Fair Oaks CA: Five or 6 kids in my freshman class have gray in their hair. Yet, I don’t, and I play soccer, volleyball, basketball, and swim team, and am up late every night with lots of stressful homework.

Lennon, 22, Fair Oaks: A junior in my high school had tons of gray but he wasn’t an overachiever. The main stress today is that parents want

their kids to be good at everything. Parents say they had to work when they were kids, but work isn’t competitive. Lots of kids work today, too, but did you also play year-round sports, take piano lessons, do student council, participate in mock trials, and do community service? No, at most you had a job and played sports one season a year — or were in band. Almost nobody did everything like today. Plus academics weren’t nearly as tough. Kids get up at 6 AM, get home at 9 PM, and do homework until midnight. Their whole day is competitive.

Dear Carol: Scientists and doctors suspect premature graying is from stress but the science is “gray” with “multi-variables” (genetics included), according to a 2007 Scientific American article. Nevertheless, your question highlighted today’s biggest stressors and even I was surprised at the absolute consistency in the need to be high-achieving and get into a top college. Could this “good is not good enough” belief system be why so many kids give up (our largest cities have a 50 percent dropout rate), while 30 percent of our graduates start graying before they can buy a beer?

Pet of the Week: Pop Belly Pig

Yes, it’s true, the Sacramento County Animal Shelter does have a pop belly pig up for adoption, and he has been at the shelter for quite some time. He doesn’t have a name and most people in Sacramento don’t have the outside space for an

animal of this size so he sits and waits for a name and a home.

If you’re the type of person that loves animals, has a large outside space and wants to save a life, you should consider adopting this pig. He’s very friendly, he loves to eat and he

snorts a lot – which makes him so cute! Just think about the fun you could have with a pet pig – talk about a conversation started. Plus, pigs are known to have similar mannerisms to dogs such as loving belly rubs. Pigs crave affection as most pets do and can get lonely. He is currently in the barn area of the animal shelter and would love some visitors. Please don’t let him become forgotten.

Sacramento – To highlight April as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, and due to the effect that today’s economy is having on some animal owners, the County Animal Shelter wants to remind residents that is more important than ever to be vigilant against animal abuse and neglect.

“People may have trouble paying for the care of their animals and may be getting in over their heads,” said Pat Claerbout, Animal Shelter Director. “We depend on the community to be our eyes and ears and report signs of potential animal cruelty and

neglect, and we want to make sure that the animals are taken care of and are not suffering unnecessarily.”

If you observe situations that may indicate abuse or neglect, such as animals being left out in the weather every day with no shelter, or tethered to a fence or post with no food and water, be a “Critter Tipper” and contact the Sacramento County Shelter at 916-368-7387 to report the situation. Through the “Critter Tip” program, operated by the Shelter’s non-profit affiliate TEAM (Teaching Everyone that Animals Matter), you may be eligible for

a reward of up to $500 for being the first person to report an issue.

“We are not looking to impound animals or unnecessarily penalize owners; we just want the opportunity to investigate and protect the animals,” Claerbout added.

“Animal neglect is a very real issue in our community,” Claerbout added. “In March alone, the Animal Shelter brought in a large number of animals rescued from neglect and abuse situations, including 66 rabbits that were taken from a private residence and 38 cats that were left abandoned at a church.”

Chautauqua Playhouse announces the opening of TARTUFFE by Jean Baptiste Moliere, adapted by Bill Trzeciak, opening April 3rd, at the Playhouse. The show will run on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm through May 3rd. All performances will be held at the Chautauqua Playhouse, 5325 Engle Road in the La Sierra Community Center in Carmichael. Admission is $17 general and $15 students, seniors, children and SARTA members. This is a sparkling original version of one of the great comedies of the French theatre! Into the home of the wealthy Orgon comes Tartuffe, a fraud and pious impostor who succeeds magnificently in winning the respect and devotion of the head of the house. Will Tartuffe’s duplicity be exposed? Will Orgon come to his senses? A delightfully funny and pointed farce!

The production is directed and designed by Robin Henson and features Rodger Hoopman, Richanne Baldridge, Michael Beckett and many others. Costumes are by Sayuri Nina Pinckard.

Dial 811 Before Any Excavation ProjectApril is safe digging month, and as

people plan various garden and home improvement projects this spring, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) reminds customers to always call 811 before digging. Whether it’s planting a tree, installing a sprinkler system or building a fence, homeowners and professional excavators need to know where gas and electric lines lay underground.

The 811 hotline is a free service to obtain important information on what utilities exist beneath the excavation area.

Natural gas pipelines, electric power lines and other utilities buried underground can lie within just a few feet of the surface. Accidental contact with these lines can be dangerous and even fatal.

California law requires customers to notify utilities at least two working days before digging. Calling 811 puts customers in direct contact with Underground Service Alert (USA), a free utility notification service for anyone who plans any type of excavation project, no matter how small. Customers can call

USA from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for holidays.

Accidental damage to utility lines can disrupt gas and electric service to an entire neighborhood, cause significant property damage and lead to serious injury. USA notifies local utility companies to go out and mark the approximate location of their underground facilities in and around the excavation site. When underground lines are marked, customers can avoid them and prevent serious accidents from occurring.

William Jessup University Offers $2,000 Grants to Community College StudentsApril 24 Transfer Day Offers Informational Visit and Campus Tour

Rocklin – Community college students looking to transfer to a four-year college will receive a generous head start on tuition payments by attending William Jessup University.

The only private, four-year university whose campus is in the Greater Sacramento area, William Jessup is offering a $2,000 grant ($1,000 per semester) to any community college student coming directly to Jessup with 24 or more transferable credits.

The grant would be renewed each year that the student is enrolled as a full-time student in good academic standing.

To help all incoming students learn more about William Jessup, the university has scheduled its annual Transfer Day on Friday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The day

is specifically designed for students currently attending a community college or a four-year university who wish to tour the Rocklin campus.

“William Jessup University offers expanded curriculum opportunities in a small school setting with a student-to-faculty ratio of 12-to-1,” said Vance Pascua, Director of Undergraduate Admission at William Jessup. “We welcome the opportunity to offer a very different and distinct option than that of the large, public universities in the area.”

Transfer Day provides an informational visit for prospective William Jessup students to learn more about the educational opportunities at the Christian university and its campus life. Students will take a campus tour, have lunch, meet with major department chairs, and receive information from admissions, the financial aid department and curriculum advisors. Parents are also welcome to attend.

“Choosing the right college is a very significant decision, so it is important to give students an opportunity to come for a visit and learn about all facets of our campus,” Pascua said. “Students can really

benefit from spending an entire day with us and getting a glimpse of what makes our university special.”

William Jessup University was founded in 1939 in San Jose and relocated its main campus to Rocklin in 2004. The campus is an impressive blend of modern architecture and state-of-the-art technology. It is situated on 128 acres and is located 20 miles northeast of Sacramento.

The university welcomes transfer students regardless of the number of units completed at other accredited colleges and universities. Applicants who have completed more than 24 solid academic semester units at the time of application will have their admission evaluation done primarily on the basis of college work.

If an applicant has completed less than 24 solid academic semester units at the time of application, the admission evaluation will be done primarily on the basis of their final high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores and completed college work.

To enroll for Transfer Day, students must RSVP online at www.Jessup.edu or call Katrice Hernandez in the Admissions Office at 916-577-2225.
