A monthly publication of The Vintage Motorcycle Club Johannesburg, South Africa. Volume 27. No 11. November 2013. CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE: By the time you read this several of us will be preparing for the Fairest Cape which is the final national event of the year. Then it’s the DJ again and the regulations are out, so please get your entries in for this great event. Talking of rallies the survey which we sent out concerning the 2014 Magnum received good response, so thank you to all those who took the time. A survey is an excellent way of establishing what people want, and more importantly perhaps what would attract new blood to participate. We will be releasing the results of the survey shortly, and may well be issuing a further very short follow up survey before final decisions regarding number of days, venue etc. are finalised. At the end of the day however it is up to each and every one of us to try and make the time to attend rallies, and to attract new entries. There is probably no stronger marketing tool than word of mouth and I would appeal to everyone to both start planning now to attend the Magnum and to encourage a fellow club member or friend to enter as well. By the way – the last Sunday run was a roaring success and thanks to those who attended and the organiser Rob Pattison-Emms. Let’s try and make these Sunday runs a must. There is nothing like being part of 30 or so good bikes on good roads on a Sunday morning in good weather!! Sad to report the death of Fred Wills recently. May his soul rest in peace. Take care out there. Andy Stead

Club Night 23 September 2013 The chairman, Andy Stead welcomed the members to the meeting, the seventh since the move to VVC. There was a good attendance of 42 especially since the next day was Heritage Day. He particularly welcomed Stuart Cunningham and Paul Whitehead, who had made such huge steps to recovery. He apologised that the intended speaker Justin Elliot about his Horex was unable to be present. Andy had spoken to Steve Helm, who had fortunately been in Mombasa when the terrorist group had taken hostages at the Shopping Mall in Nairobi. Piet Maas, who was also attending the Concourse, was fine as well. Apologies were received from Rob Pattison-Emms, Gawie Nienaber, Ian Holmes, Peter Posniak and Gavin Walton, who was making good progress. New members were: Guido Kaiser, owner of an old 75cc Norton: Dennis Bakker with a 2003 GS and a visitor from the Cape, Keith Blake, owner of a 2006 Triumph Bonneville, were welcomed. Andy reported back on the Swop Meet at Piston Ring, which had been extremely well attended. Although there had not been any bike spares for sale, there had been a few motorbikes: a LE Velocette in original condition: a Mini Moke with a BMW inside! - amongst others. The next Sunday Run was on 13th October starting at Broad Acres Shopping Centre at the Coffee Shop, travelling to the Kromdraai Mine with lunch at Kenjara. About 18 people were interested in attending. Kevin Robertson said that the people from Pretoria would meet the rest of the group at the mine as it was easier to take the R28. Eric McQuillian reminded the meeting that on Sunday 29th September the monthly meeting of VVC would also be a swop meeting. Pierre Cronje informed the meeting that there was a Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride organised by the Soweto Club with more details on the CMC website on 29th September. (The ride is taking place in 38 countries world ride. In South Africa Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg are the venues.) It was commented that this ride was more aimed at cafe racers. The Velocette Reunion would be taking place based at the Fouriesburg Inn from Friday 4th October until Sunday 6th October. Kevin Robertson added that there would be two rides on Saturday. The first leaving at 7h00 would travel to Clarens and Bethlehem, where the riders would enjoy coffee and then back to Fouriesburg for breakfast while the second would pass through Ficksburg to a roadhouse just outside Clocolan. The riders would then travel back in their own time. All motorbike enthusiasts were welcome to join the gathering – but they must have respect for Velocettes. Andy had spoken to the organisers of the Fairest Cape and although entries had closed, they were prepared to take late entries up to two weeks ahead of the rally which would take place on 4th and 5th November. There was no award for Motorcyclist of the Month.

CLUB REGISTER. Steve Trehair had received 35 responses to date. He would send out another email otherwise he may have to revert to the old manual system. Mr Huldebos reminded him that there was no space for the SAVVA dating number on the return. MAGNUM: Andy reminded the members that VMC would be hosting the event in conjunction with the POMC in 2014. He would be meeting with POMC to discuss arrangements including Clerk of the Course. They really planned to make it a viable proposition and some serious marketing was needed. An event organiser was needed to badger people to enter. All other factors e.g. the cost, distance, days and locations needed to be looked at. If other alternatives were proposed, these would also be discussed. JD Video: Progress had been made cutting the coverage from 13 to 2 1/2 hours. Andy would have more meetings with the editor and then the script would be concentrated on. John Allison had been asked and had agreed, to be the narrator. The time frame was 6 weeks. Kevin Robertson asked if there was any clarification on the green and the pink form for a bike’s registration. It was affirmed that the pink form is no longer in use and that one had to apply in person with the licence and one’s ID for the green form. Andy recommended using Q solutions who charge a R100 administration fee. The meeting concluded with the showing of videos. The head count was 42 Odds and Ends: A VERY final reminder about the Fairest Cape. Although it’s way past the entry deadline if you contact Eddie Kirkwood [email protected] you just MAY be able to lodge a late entry. This fantastic rally is on the 4th and 5th of November. There is always a shortage of articles for publication in Kickstart. If you have anything you feel would be of interest to members please jot it down and send it in – don’t worry about the layout, grammar, spelling or anything like that – just send it in!!! Club Register Steve Trehair is continuing with the testing, and once the tests are done and he is happy, he will need to update the service provider’s portion of the Register. Please can anyone who has input in terms of recommendation of service providers advise Steve – this can include anything relating to good service – machining, spray painting, supply of parts/services etc. This makes life that much easier when looking for the right person for the job.

SAVVA Technical Tip No 78 - Water Hoses (know this does seem specific to cars but then Scott)????......... Recently I had to take the head off an engine that just wouldn’t run right and had a tendency to run a tad warm. It was a 1960’s overhead valve engine, typical of that era British sports car. After wasting hours messing around with the carbs, timing, valve clearances etc it became obvious that the problem had to be with the innards – so off came its head.

When the head was on the bench and stripped the mystery deepened some-what as the valves etc were in perfect condition. Obviously, we should have taken a compression check first but it was too late once the head was off. I was reminded of the old saying “lazy people do the most work”.

I assumed the problem must be piston related therefore the engine must come out. The laborious task of taking the engine out starts with the removal of the radiator, so off came the top hose and then the bottom hose and surprise, surprise – guess what I found – the top hose was obviously a bit too big so a previous owner had, in their infinite wisdom, wound some plastic insulation tape around to take-up the clearance. The problem was that with heat of the engine the glue on the tape had softened and slid back over the water pump’s orifice reducing the water flow by more than 50%. See picture.

At this stage I was more or less commited to pulling the engine out. Once the engine was out and stripped I found all the top piston rings broken. This must have been the problem right from the beginning. The big question was why? There wasn’t a ridge at the top of the bore and the pistons were in perfect condition, so one has to assume that the restricted water flow had caused serious overheating, resulting in broken rings.

Past events

The Sunday run to Kromdraai mine and Kenjara Lodge (By Beeza Geeza) Sunday runs? – turn over and go back to sleep again – I mean NO ONE actually GOES on these do they? – well this time they did – and they did it in numbers!. Ever since Rob Pattison-Emms (RPE for short) announced that he was doing the organisation the run had potential. He has a history of successful events, and this one looked like being a corker – and it WAS!!. Must admit on Saturday I hauled out the dusty Goldie and gave it a few tentative kicks, but no - it was still in hibernation. Then on to the ever elegant Guzzi V7 complete with look-alike Police screen, and a quick jab on the starter button and it roared into its strange one/two big pot life. OK so it’s not as exciting as the Goldie but electric starter, nice big seat and screen and promises of smooth comfort – no contest. The route was from Broadacres to the old Kromdraai Gold mine then off to Kenjara for lunch. You knew this was going to be a good run when at Broadacres there were heaps of bikes - not just the one or two of previous runs. And they just kept coming, and remember folks the guys from Pretoria were going straight to the mine so there was potential for even more. There were also some real OLD bikes – a Triumph N de Lux ridden by a brave Ken Wiggins, and a bunch of Matchies, Triumphs and AJS’s amongst others. There was even another Moto Guzzi V7 (Up the Italians!!) Organiser RPE led us off in a MORGAN – nice car and all that but hey – this was supposed to be a two wheeled event hey RPE?. Brisk pace to the mine where again there were hundreds of bikes from Pretoria area (a bit of an exaggeration – but there were a big bunch OK??) The mine tour was great and very educational, (I gave it a miss myself having lived on top of gold mines for many years in good old Selukwe in Rhodesia) and they had to do two trips into the mine there were so many of us. Onward then to Kenjara for lunch, and what a spread – once again take a Bow RPM.. Under the trees, great weather, good beers, and lots of good friends – I mean what else one can ask for. Everyone home in their own time, and must admit the Guzzi has this nack of just floating along and forgiving some lazy riding by yours truly who probably shouldn’t have had those last two Windhoek Lagers. Final count was around 40 of us and this is what a Sunday run should be – well done again to RPE and well done to all those who turned out – let’s try and keep these sort of numbers for every event!. And it was so good I am including the full list of everyone who was there – please excuse spelling errors but I tell you some of you okes write VERY badly. Take a bow guys.

The Nairobi Concours – a continuation by Stephen Helm Kenya Busted! Friday the 20th Sept and we were at the Airport early despite a late night with Brian Hough the evening prior. Oom Piet very eager even at 81 years of age to be off running around Africa, strange Czech brandy and its friends have no effect on this man! Arrival and a dinner evening at Nairobi club with Bob Dewar went by quickly and we caught the bus to Mombasa. Fort Jesus circa 1400’s and the old town/ market with lots of Tusker and a few antique shops was a great day on Saturday! Having our room robbed of money, phone and my computer that evening not too great!. Two International Moneygram/ Western Union offices next door to the Hotel giving a very good idea of how often this happens! Despite security at Hotel entrance and front desk, the Police said these thefts even occur regularly while the guest is in the rooms’ bathroom. Our Passports and bankcards very kindly untouched by the thieves! Sunday we spent at the beach. All we saw during this time on television and thought about was the Westgate Mall tragedy and were back in Nairobi by Monday wondering how things would work out! Tuesday we spent at the Mercedes agent DT Dobie with our bikes, I was shocked at how many nuts/ bolts were loose on the Scott, having caused numerous scratches on the bike and how plentiful the fingerprint marks on the frame! Of course it wouldn’t start so we pulled the motor apart, and after the manager and drivers assistance found some huge o rings to replace the replaced rock hard ones under the side engine caps, we cut gaskets for the rest since it had none and finally got some crankcase compression. Resetting the timing after tightening up the loose Magneto bolts, these are too long and are tensioned now by nuts, we also tightened the totally loose mag sprocket. But many attempts at tiring mechanics out pushing me around the yard was not enough to compensate for the flooding problems? No issues with the Chater-Lea obviously! A fantastic Indian food dinner that evening with Shailesh/ Micky and their spouses was the highlight of the trip!

Seems the postponement of the “Concours de Elegance” to the 17th of November is possibly the gods taking pity on me! Many other issues have popped up, the new battery box doesn’t fit, fuel/oil caps were not re-chromed, the battery lost its charge and many other little things to be remedied. We returned home early and shall be back to Kenya hopefully with a fair wind at our backs and more time to get the Squirrel running! Unbelievable how much one person can mess a bike up!

Mechanical Resurrection (By Edgar Bradley)

Creativity is ultimately an attribute of God, who creates ex nihilo, i.e. out of nothing. His creatures imitate this process in various ways, but need something to start with. Creation in human terms is the process of inventing something new using existing things. This type of creativity is also demonstrated by lesser creatures to some extent – the bowers of coloured stones and grasses created by Australian Bower Birds for example, to attract and impress potential mates. In the modern world, being creative is not easy – a new technology or device requires many processes and much money and usually the combined effort of many people. So some resort to a lower form of creativity using existing things and modifying them in sometimes radical new ways. This category of creativity is exemplified by the creation of hotrods and customs out of old cars and choppers out of old motorcycles. The creative aspect here is similar to modern art – bizarre colour schemes, impractically low vehicles and to my mind an irredeemable ugliness. It has been further said that choppers and customs are the mechanical equivalent of animal vivisection – a cruel practice. Oh well, Picasso laughed all the way to the bank. This is of course an extremely personal view and I hope that if there are hotrod and chopper enthusiasts reading this that they will bear with me, in the spirit of different strokes for different folks (and that’s another thing – I do not like two strokes either). I once spoke to the wife of an ex-biker who was trying to persuade her husband to buy a chopper. “Why?” is all I could ask, incredulously. “Why not a standard bike?” As the chopper genre is closely related to people who ride Harleys, I asked her why not try a V-Rod or a Sportster– some choppers cost as much and you can actually do useful things with a V-Rod like commuting and touring. So although it gives an outlet for some for the creative urge, choppers, customs and hotrods are not for me. I propose rather the more common practice of re-creation – restoration to as new. This also imitates the Creator – He not only creates, He resurrects, as He did with Jesus in the past and will do with all of us at the end of time. And old vehicle restoration is de facto mechanical resurrection and is a worthy activity. To capture that which the earth was reclaiming through corrosion and returning it to good as new is an immensely satisfying pastime. Restoration to Good-as-New is a principle I also teach in my Maintenance Engineering classes at university and elsewhere. That is the Gold Standard for maintenance work. Unfortunately the other end of the maintenance spectrum, Bad-as-Old, is often seen as well. Just get it going, that’s good enough, is the received wisdom among some factory owners and managers. Here I would commend the judges at our fellow club, the Classic Motorcycle Club. The judging at the 1000 Bike Show is to Good-as-New standards. I saw this when my 1958 Ducati 125 Sport failed to win two years ago because of a modern dry battery and a plain, rather than indented, tail light glass. I have subsequently installed a period wet cell battery and the correct tail light glass. Sometimes there is a need for over-restoration. I think having electric starting on a 1000cc Vincent is probably essential for some of us whose kick starting strength is starting to taper off in this, the Indian summer of our lives (i.e. the over 65’s). But usually Good-as-New is the standard to aim for. I have restored one car in my life - a one-and-a-half litre pre-war MG VA saloon. That was years ago when I was a student and my father supplied the expertise and finance for the job. I then acquired a new girl friend and said I was coming to pick her up in my MG. To her this immediately meant “TC open sports car”. She told me years later (she is now my wife) that she was disappointed on seeing me drive up in this black saloon, but she did not show it at the time.

16

In fact I got back into this restoration game because of my wife – she said I needed a hobby. She thought “model aircraft” (A former hobby of mine - also expensive and time consuming, but not to the same extent as old bikes). What I heard was “restore old motorbikes”. Now, as regards restoration, I prefer bikes to cars – they are cheaper, take less room and are easier to work on. In the smaller sizes one does not need lifting equipment. One can lift an engine out of a frame and on to a work bench by oneself, or perhaps with the assistance of a friend or family member. Cheaper than cars yes, but still not cheap. Willie Munn of the CMC once said to me that a restored motorcycle part has three prices – What you told your wife you paid for it, what you told your friends you paid for it, and what you actually paid for it! One gets different types of restorers as well. There are the gung-ho types who do it all themselves – spray painting, saddle making, turning, welding, fitting etc. You would think some of them would even make their own tyres! Then there are the assemblers like me who for lack of time, facilities and skills have to contract many of the services out – which increases the cost of the restoration of course. The days of the R 100 000 restoration, if not already with us, are approaching, unfortunately. but it is still a great way to spend the money if one has it! The other thing about restoration is: Get on with it! One must resist the Magpie Syndrome which is buying old wrecks and then leaving them to decay further. I have a friend who has acquired seven non-running cars of a certain desirable make and has had them in storage for years. He is so busy with his consulting practice that he has no time to work on them. In restored form, they would be worth millions of Rands. The awful truth is that even if he started to work on them now, he does not have the time or money left in this life to finish them all. Friends are encouraging him to get going on one at least. I have found that one must self-motivate to avoid impasses such as these. Get the bright work rechromed and the paintwork resprayed. You will then have something shiny to look at which will motivate you to get to work on the engine. Even so, it can be a long haul. Finding that illusive part can take years of trawling the Internet. And there is the personal time involved in the actual work. Some bikes get restored to Good-as-New in 18 months, others take six years and that is not for want of trying. Pastimes are legion. Some people do ballroom dancing, some grow irises, some watch too much television, and some go camping. But I suppose for most of the readers of this magazine, nothing beats restoring old motorcycles. Edgar Bradley. November, 2012. [email protected]. 011 465 0275 083 292 7733
