The night honorsmilitary, emergency, fire, police, andborder patrol personnel and theirfamilies with free admission to thegame. All the action begins at 7:05PM.In addition, the first 1,500 kids inattendance will receive an autographbook which can be signed after thegame during the IceRays’ full-teamautograph session courtesy of theCoastal Community Teachers CreditUnion.There are still great tickets availablefor the game. CCAD Returns First OH-58Armed Scout Helicopter to the Fight

Corpus Christi, TX - Corpus ChristArmy Depot sent its first OH-58DKiowa Warrior back to the fightduring a roll-out ceremony held in thedepot's Hangar 44, Oct. 14, 2010. Theunprecedented OH-58D crash battledamage repair is the first step toincreasing the number of KiowaWarriors at a time when cost-effectivemeasures are critical to supportthe war effort. The repair program began November2008 when CCAD, together with theArmed Scout Helicopter ProgramOffice, Aviation and Missile Command,Aviation and Missile ResearchDevelopment & Engineering Centerand BellHelicopter, inducted a crash damagedOH-58D aircraft to be repaired."When it comes to a soldier on theground looking to someone in the sky,they can count on the KW," said ColChristopher Carlile, CCAD Commander."Recently, a KW spent seven hours inclose combat support of an engineerunit hit with a complex IED ambush.It covered continually, even to thepoint of having to use an M-4 Carbineafter running out of rockets andother ammunition." The Kiowa Warrior is a single-engine,two-seat reconnaissance anddirect-fire support aircraft that haslogged more than 600,000 combathours between Iraq and Afghanistan,where it battles sand, snow and highaltitudes. "That type of support is what Armyaviation is about," Carlile added."That's the dedication our branch hasto our ground soldiers and thejoint fight." Used extensively in Afghanistan, theOH-58 Kiowa Warriors are in shortsupply due to their supposed phase-out and replacement by the ArmedReconnaissance Helicopter, a programthat has since been shut down. The Army, with 330 of 368helicopters on-hand and losing

approx. 5 peryear since 2001 wants KiowaWarriors as an integral piece of the CombatAviation Brigade for several moreyears and instituted a SustainmentMaintenance Program. The SMP ispart of the Army's effort to reduceplatform sustainment costs andcontain the expense of replacing aginghelicopters. "This aircraft that the CCAD team puttogether is a testament to thisworkforce's dedication and patriotism,how they support the Warfighter,"said Carlile. "This team knows ourcontribution to the fight is notbased on our proximity to thebattlefield." The program's resurgence also meansthat parts are in short supply.Working with Aircraft Productiontechnicians and engineers, the depot'sLocal Manufacturing Division rampedup quickly, initially machining twomatched cabin roof beams needed toprovide structural integrity for thecabin fuselage and transmission. "CCAD helped us find and fabricatevery hard to find parts that willactually help out the rest of the fleet,"said Lt. Col. Scott Rauer,Kiowa Warrior Program Manager. Local Manufacturing operates mills,lathes, and Computer NumericalControl led (CNC) machinesfabricating parts for other helicopterprograms and now includes the KW.The shop recently installed a fluidcell press-a device that can createstructural components in minutesrather than hours. "They can manufacture those hard tofind parts here, at the depot, orthey can find other people who can doit for us," Rauer added. CCAD's team of maintenance, repair,and overhaul artisans work inconcert to generate an asset for ArmyAviation that is equal to orbetter than a new one. The CCADteam presently repairs OH-58 KiowaWarrior, UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64D Apache, and CH-47 Chinookscrash orbattle damaged airframes, returningthem to the fight.
