WAUKESHA, WI — Apicturesque town just 20miles west of Milwaukee.It was considered a resort
getaway for Chicagoansin the late 1800s with itsclean water, earning thenickname “Spring Town.”
Today the town still up-holds that fame. In 2012,Waukesha made MoneyMagazine’s prestigious
100 Best Places to Live.That was the same yearthat the waste manage-ment supervisor, Steve
Dziekan, began workingon a proposal to convertthe city’s recycling centerinto a mulch and com-post facility.
“We have a recyclingcenter here where ourresidents can come inand drop off their yardwaste, their garbage andany branches andleaves,” says Dziekan.“We were paying an astro-nomical amount of mon-ey to have a waste com-pany haul it out of here.”
Dziekan came to theCity of Waukesha in 2009from the private sector,
where he managed land-fill operations. Afterwatching how the citycollected and disposed ofyard waste, and then see-ing the operational costs,he relied on his previousexperience to proposeconverting the yard wasteinto mulch and compost.
“During those threeyears out in the field, I re-ally got a feel of how thecity operated. I just start-ed looking at everythingbased on my experiencein the waste industry.

When I got into this [su-pervisor] position, I start-ed looking at numbersand thinking — ‘What’sgoing on?’” he says.
Dziekan needed to per-suade the city council tospend the money to con-vert its current operationto one that producesreusable products in-stead of waste. It was go-ing to require up-frontcapital costs to obtain theright equipment and cre-ating additional space atthe facility for the mulchand compost areas.
“Being a municipality,we had to sell it. I gave apresentation to the Com-mon Council in order toget the money to purchasethe equipment,” he says.
In his presentation, itreally came down toshowing the numbers.Dziekan was also able toshow the Council that thecity had the most tonnageof wood waste in the en-tire county. Once theCouncil learned of themoney that would besaved by eliminating theneed for the waste to behauled away - and wouldactually be turned into auseful product for resi-dents and city parks —they accepted Dziekan’sproposal. After that, hebegan working with thestate’s Department ofNatural Resources to en-sure the proper regula-tions were followed.
“I’m proud to say thatwhen the DNR did comeout here to inspect thesite, they said, ‘Wow, youreally have your stuff to-gether; you made thiseasy’, which was a bigcompliment for me,knowing that I couldmove forward,” he says.
The next step was toobtain the necessaryequipment, especially theright type of grinder. Thefacility had a 20 year oldtub grinder to processwood waste but forDziekan’s plan, a newgrinder was necessary.Dziekan and his teamturned to local dealerVermeer Wisconsin. Ter-ritory Manager MarkSyverson explains that helooked at the facility po-tential and the possibilitythat wood waste tonnagewould continue to in-crease over the next fewyears, especially as thecity works proactively tocombat emerald ash bor-er infestations.
“We discussed with Stevehis long term goals andtheir potential growth,”Syverson says. “Steve and Idetermined the VermeerHG6000 horizontal grinderwas the optimal machinefor his needs now and inthe future.”
The recycling facilitysits on 11 acres, whichincludes the residentdropoff, processing andcompost areas. Residentscan drop off twice a weekat the facility, as well asan annual citywide brushpickup. On occasionthere is need for special
pickup due to majorstorms; such was thecase on June 30, 2014.
Storm damage andthe Vermeer HG6000A high wind storm
caused significant damageto 25 percent of the city.The department had tomobilize to collect thedowned trees and branch-es caused by the storm.
“We opened up the fa-cility through that week-end for our residents,” hesays. “We also went outwith our trucks and load-ers to bring in the stormdebris as well.”
According to Dziekanthe northeast section ofthe city was hit the hard-est. For that area,Dziekan moved the Ver-meer HG6000 to a stag-ing area nearby in orderto grind up the materialright there. For this rea-son, Dziekan wanted atrailered unit that couldbe easily mobilized.
“The whole purpose forthis machine was to beable to move it, which isreally easy,” he says.

estimates they haveprocessed 5,000 tons ofyard waste annually.They accept all greenwaste except for grass
clippings. Dziekan saysthe material is separatedout by type, which deter-mines if it will beprocessed for mulch orused for compost. Treebranches and brush be-come mulch; the yardwaste such as old flowersand leaves is saved forcomposting.
No matter what the ma-terial ends up as, it firstgets processed throughby the Vermeer HG6000.Dziekan explains theyrun the grinder approxi-mately twice a week toprocess all the materialcollected. The efficiencyof the horizontal grinderis what impressesDziekan the most fromthe output of its previoustub grinder.
“The time comparisonversus our old grinder is
impressive. I would esti-mate a 90 percent timesavings with our Vermeergrinder,” says Dziekan. “Ican tell you there are timesthat even two wheel load-ers can’t keep up with it.”
“If I’m making mulch,grinding all the treebranches, I run it througha 2-inch screen. Then, I’mjust going to let that pileheat up and cure. Nobodywants to put freshground-up trees out intheir yard. So basically Ikeep it segregated and itcures for a while.”
Dziekan estimates thatit’s two to three monthsbefore the mulch is readyfor residents to use. Thecity provides the mulch toresidents for free andthey typically run out. “Ican tell you, this yearalone, since we've had thegrinder, I've probably putout 800-cubic-yards ofmulch that’s gone andthere’s probably another1,000-cubic-yards sitting
there, or better, rightnow,” he says.
The compostingwindrows are situated atanother part of the facili-ty, which is a more in-volved process. The com-post is produced frommostly leaves. Besidesthe resident drop off, thecity will go pick up leavesand stockpile for use incompost. He maintainssix windrows of leaf com-post on a 20,000-cubic-yard area. The shortestwindrow is 220-feet inlength and the longest is480-feet.
Dziekan participated inan intensive three daytraining and testing pro-gram on composting inMadison. The trainingtaught him how to effective-ly maintain windrows foroptimal compost product.
“When I make thewindrows, I test themweekly, temperature-wise. I want to keep thatat 131 degrees or higher.
I turn the pile every twoweeks and monitor it. Thewindrows I have nowhave been out there forjust about four months.Right now they’re at theircuring stage.
“Most of the windrowsare running about 140degrees. But once thetemperature starts com-ing back down the otherway — to like 122, 120ranges — that’s when Ilook at starting to curethem, so I don’t burn offthe good microbes. Wemonitor it until it coolsdown enough to whereit’s cured. You’re lookingprobably about threemonths to cure a pile.”
In the fall, Dziekan willgo back to the CommonCouncil to show how thecity’s investment haspaid off. He is excited toshow its success so far.
“They’re going to askquestions, and I will beable to show how muchmoney we have saved.”

The past month or so Ihave had two customershave grinders burn to theground. Neither of thegrinders was one of mine,but it affected my cus-tomers greatly.
Getting a call that yourgrinder has burned givesyou a sickening feeling. Iknow, it happened to me.
Not only do you lose theuse of your grinder, yourinsurance costs will sure-ly increase and waitingfor the insurance investi-gation and payment ofcoverage will further de-lay the replacement ofyour equipment. In theseIndustries, fires are al-ways a possibility, so us-ing some standard oper-ating procedures will helpreduce your chances of
your equipment catchingfire. Sometimes thingsare out of your control,but in most cases, house-keeping is the issue.
An air compressor is anecessary tool for everygrinder operation. Even aleaf blower can be used ina pinch. Either of thesewould be useful in helpingto keep your grinder clean.
How can these fireshappen:
• Material buildup onengines and exhaustsystems;
• Hot metal that hasbeen discharged from thegrinder;
• One major issue iscracks in the muffler orexhaust systems. Muf-flers not only reduce thenoise of the engine, they
actually capture sparksand disperse them priorto exhausting into the at-mosphere. When cracksdevelop, the sparks canbe sent out into the en-gine compartment. In ad-dition, all the rust parti-cles in the exhaust sys-tem get hot and are setout of these cracks to set-tle and burn themselvesout somewhere;
• Bearings failing createa lot of heat and can startfires; and
• Exhaust air can alsocatch material on fire.
What can you do?Standard operating pro-cedures should include:
• Blow off equipmentdaily with an air com-pressor, even with leafblower if needed. This in-
cludes the radiator, hy-draulic cooler, fuel cooler,air filter, etc;
• Portable machinesshould be moved out ofplace, the area cleaned,then the put back inplace. This will removeany surrounding debrisand any hot metal thatmay be in the area;
• Face the dischargethe furthest away fromwind. For example, ifwind is from the west,then the feed hopper ortub is the furthest westand the discharge is thefurthest part of the ma-chine east. This elimi-nates the ground materi-als from blowing backonto the machine;
• Use a hopper or bin tocollect metal debris;
• Use exhaust wraps orblanket to keep debris offexhaust system and heatcontrolled;
• Shutdown equipmentat least an hour beforeyou leave the site. This is-n’t an exact science be-cause when it happenedto me, the grinder had satfor two hours before I leftthe site. An hour and ahalf later, I had nogrinder; and

Also , in warm cli-mates, you could face theradiator and coolers into
the wind as long as thedischarge of material iscarrying opposite the ra-diator. This not onlyhelps keep the enginecooler, it helps the fuelcooler keep the fuel cool-er which as we havetalked about in the past,reduces your fuel usage.
Be smart, if the wind isblowing the material backover the machine, don’t bea dumb grinder guy, youare just asking for a fire.
You may have otherideas. Turn them into aSOP List and have youroperators stick to it. It’sthe best you can do to notlose $500,000 or more.

HUNTERTOWN, IN —Asphalt Drum Mixers,Inc., offers four models ofportable and stationaryrecycle systems to en-hance the cost efficiencyof asphalt plants. Recyclesystems allow plants touse milled material in hotmix asphalt (HMA). Sincerecycled asphalt pave-ment (RAP) is muchcheaper than virgin ag-gregate, the result is aless expensive finishedproduct that maintainsthe high quality of a purevirgin aggregate mix.
ADM’s recycle bins fea-ture a 15 ton capacityand are continuouslywelded at the seams. Thebins contain angle ironsand midsection stiffenersfor reinforcement, andtheir steeply sloped side-walls prevent materialfrom plugging or bridg-ing. A tapered dischargeopening leads to the di-rect drive belt feeder witha five horsepower motor,multi-ply belt, self-clean-ing tail pulley and ad-justable skirt boards.
To transfer RAP fromthe bin, the recycle sys-tem includes a heavyduty weigh conveyor thatfeatures a channel frameand wind shroud protec-tion for accurate weigh-ing. The conveyor is 2-feet wide and, dependingon the model, between 45and 65-feet long. It intro-duces RAP to the driedaggregate mix after theheating process. Basedon conditions and type ofplant, up to 50 percent ofthe HMA can contain re-cycled pavement.
Portable units feature aheavy duty I-beam frameon a gooseneck trailer witha fifth wheel kingpin hitch,single axle and air brakes.The trailer includes hingedsupport legs and a hy-draulically controlled in-cline conveyor.
An optional lumpbreaker is available forADM’s recycling systemsto break down largepieces of RAP into a use-able size. It features anadjustable steel breakerplate and replaceabletungsten-tipped teeth,and is powered by a 30hp, high efficiency motorwith an open mesh cov-
ered V-belt drive. Singleand double deck scalpingscreens are also availableto ensure oversized mate-rial does not enter the ag-gregate mix. Other op-tions include air cannons,grizzlies, bin extensions,adjustable legs with sandshoes, and a skid withbolt-on support legs.

For the recyclers who attended TEREX® Finlay’sNorth American Open Days 2014 in Baltimore, MD,July 17 and 18, the second day trip to the Topsoilsetc. recycling center in Pasadena, MD proved to benot only educational, but informative as well.Co-hosted by TEREX Finlay and MidlanticMachinery, Inc., more than 100 attendees fromacross the U.S. and Canada spent the morningobserving an I-100RS tracked impactor and an 883tracked screen unit, outfitted with the optionalGerman SPALECK® screen box. While the concreterecycling demonstration highlighted the power of theI-100RS crusher and its ability to handle rebar ladenconcrete, the showstopper for this event was theSPALECK Screen deck option, mounted on an 883screener. This specialty screen deck is interchange-able with the 883’s standard screen deck, but whatmade this an attention getting demonstration was theease with which the unit removed remnants of plasticgarbage bags once filled with composted yard waste.
TOPSOILS etc.TOPSOILS, etc. was founded by John E. Bronson,
owner of Bronson Contracting, Inc., in 2005 whenafter more than 15 years in the contracting business,Bronson realized that there were few topsoil suppliers
in his area. With that in mind, he began stockpilingmaterial from different jobsites and amending it tomeet the needs for his building project jobsites.
From there, it didn’t take long before he beganselling excess material to homeowners on eveningsand weekends as a hobby. Word soon spread andother contractors started asking Bronson to supplytopsoil to their job sites. Today, TOPSOIL etc.specializes in recycling dirt, stone and brush; makingthe best topsoil, compost, stone and other relatedearth’s products. For the TEREX Finlay event, theTOPSOIL, etc, Kembo Road recycling center was anideal site because the mountain of bagged yard wastematerial that had been diverted from nearby landfillsand that had accumulated over time, had sufficientlycomposted and was ready to be screened. As specta-tors quickly saw, the Terex/Finlay 883 SPALECKscreener was put to the task and passed with flyingcolors!
SPALECK Screen box optionEquipment engineers explained that TEREX Finlay
realized the capability of the SPALECK Screen unitafter seeing it in action on stationary applications atquarries in Europe. They entered into a joint agree-ment with the German manufacturer to offer the dual
action, two-screen, screen box as an option for theirportable screen plants for applications where screen-ing out lighter material has been problematic.Recently, the first of the TEREX Finlay SPALECKequipped 883 screeners has gone into operation inthe U.S.
According to Midlantic Territory Manager, GaryReish, the first TEREX Finlay 883 with SPALECKscreen box is working at a coal mining operation. Thecustomer has been extremely pleased with itsproduction. After observing this plastic removaldemonstration, Reish said he could quickly see howuseful this unit could be in other applications.
Keith McCann, Terex Finlay North American salesdirector, noted that what makes the Spaleck screendeck unique is that each deck vibrates in differentways so that the material is screened using twodifferent actions. In simple terms, the upper deckvibrates in a more conventional oscillating way whilethe lower deck vibrates back and forth, as it movesmaterial from the infeed to the discharge end.
Not only is the motion of the two screens different,the makeup of the individual screens is entirelydifferent as well. The upper deck is a 3-D punch platedesign that cascades in steps, descending from theinfeed hopper down to the discharge chute. The 16-foot x 5-foot screen is in sections with three sectionsacross by four sections in length, with each sectionending with a set of “fingers” or turners that work toturn or roll the material over as it moves across thetop deck. The added thickness of the 3-D punch platedesign, not only helps to retain material as it passes

across the screen, but it also resists plugging. In thisway, more of the heavier screened material will fallthrough the screen, with lighter material, or in thiscase plastic, moving on to the discharge chute at thefar end of the screen.
As material makes its way through the top deck, iffalls onto the flexible rubber second deck screenwhere the back and forth motion of that deck tendsto flip the material once again, to remove largerdebris while the finer, composted material fallsthrough to the discharge conveyor. Unlike the topscreen, that vibrates in a more traditional oscillatingmanor, the lower deck moves back and forth in atotally separate action. Combined with the flexiblescreen, this provides optimum screening actionfor wet and challenging materials.
During this demonstration, the outcome was plainto see. At the discharge end of the 883, a pile of lightand fluffy plastic trash bag scraps accumulated whileon one side of the unit, a pile of rich, black compost-ed mulch was building up steadily. On the other side,a second pile of composted mulch with some largerwoody pieces and a few smatterings of plastic hereand there were being staged, ready for a secondscreening.
Paul Mc Caffery, a member of the technical supportgroup for Finlay, said in Europe, the plastic byprod-uct from this type of screening process, is recycledfurther as fuel for cement plants because of the highcaloric value of the plastic once it ignites. Equally asimportant, the plastic burns with very little in theway of emissions, which has encouraged the cementproducers to move to this recycled material and awayfrom other fuel sources like tires and recycled rubber.
Crusher in actionWhile the 883 was busy sorting out unwanted plas-
tic bag remnants from previously bagged and com-posted yard waste material, attendees were able toget some hands-on time with static displays that fea-tured an I-110 tracked impactor and a J-1170 jawcrusher. McCann explained that the J-1170 JawCrusher is designed for recycling applications with asmaller jaw for faster passage of material and metalthrough the jaw.
Earlier in the day, an I-100RS recycling impactor,crushed rebar filled concrete takeoff material, creat-ing a desirable 2-A type material used in site prepwork. Outfitted with a recirculating conveyor and theoptional bypass conveyor, the unit was set up forsteady production of consistently sized material.While the recirculating conveyor was busy returningoversized material back to the infeed hopper for addi-tional crushing, the bypass conveyor installedbeneath the infeed grizzly screen, was dischargingdesirable fine material that could be put to use with-out further crushing or screening. The TEREX Finlay 883 Recycling Plant layout, outfittedwith the optional SPALECK screen box, was a real attentiongrabber because of its ability to separate composted mulchfrom the plastic bags used by the communities and yardwaste removal companies taking in curbside waste.
The SPALECK screen box lower screen is flexible and itsdesign helps to flip the material as it passes across thescreen because of the vibrating motion of the lower screen. Once the bagged, composted material has been
processed through the TEREX Finlay 883 with theSPALECK Screen box, a premium composted material likethis is the outcome.
Topsoils, ETC works with the local landfill taking the baggedand loose yard waste and turning it into mulch and com-posted mulch.
A load of wet, bagged composted yard waste, is unloadedfor processing in the nearby TEREX Finlay screener.

The above groundmulcher attachmentfeatures a ringed rotordesign for controlleddepth of cut. The ringedrotor has 18 disks with17 interchangeable tipsto help achieve smaller,consistent sized chipscompared to non-ringedrotors. It takes strength to rise above recession. Deep dipsin the economy can be the end of the road for busi-nesses that aren’t prepared. But for those that planahead and adapt, it can mean a fresh start down anew path that makes the business even stronger thanit was before.
Riverside Sand Company, a family owned businessout of Wallace, NC, is one company that, in the end,came out ahead.
For more than 25 years, Riverside specialized inprocessing sand and gravel for use in brick projects,playgrounds, golf courses and concrete pre-casting.The company also had a trucking division for deliver-ing ordered materials to customers. It was the onething that kept Riverside from being a one channelcompany.
After a quarter of a century, the company had itstrucking and sand and gravel operations down to a T.But Riverside Vice President Wade Norris knew sucha narrow focus could be dangerous long term. Hebegan looking into options for the next move.
Little did Norris know at the time, but the steps hetook then to diversify would not only keep thecompany in business through the recession, but alsowould be the pivotal point in shaping Riverside’sfuture.
Staying aliveNorris researched new markets and machinery and
saw an opportunity to expand into asphalt andconcrete markets. His new business venture beganwhen the owner of a North Carolina business shut hisdoors and put his equipment up for sale, including an
18 year old IROCK RDS-15 closed circuit plant, whichincorporates both a screener and a crusher. Norristraveled to the business owner’s site to see the unit inaction.
Riverside had been operating with a stationaryimpact crusher from a different manufacturer. Whileit appeared to be meeting his needs, Norris was justseeing a hint of the productivity the company hadbeen missing out on. One look at the IROCK unit, andit was immediately clear the machine was efficientand had several features that would remarkablyincrease efficiency.
For example, after the initial round of screening,operators can set the machine to automaticallyreturn both decks of oversized material back to thecrusher for additional sizing, whereas Riverside’sprevious system required an extra person and anadditional loader or excavator to pick up oversizedmaterials and manually re-feed the crusher. While itmight sound simple, this feature alone would help thebusiness reduce expenses and boost production by asmuch as 20 percent.
He also saw that it would help Riverside branch outeven further than he hoped and allow the company toperform contract work along the coast. With theportable unit, he and his team could essentially gowhere the work was, rather than wait for it to come tothem.
This was possible because the crushing plant’sRapid Deployment System (RDS) makes the unitexceptionally portable, not to mention quick and easyto set up — key benefits if the Riverside crew were totake the unit on the road.
Norris jumped at the chance to purchase the crush-ing plant. Overnight, Riverside was able to processrecycled asphalt and concrete, two brand newmarkets for the little Wallace company. On top ofthat, Riverside was able to offer its services on the go;with the RDS-15, it could provide customers onsitecrushing services. It was ideal for companies that hadseveral thousand tons of material that they wanted tokeep but needed to crush.
The timing couldn’t have been any more perfect.Norris hadn’t predicted it, but he made the purchasejust before the economy flipped, road improvementprojects decreased and new construction slowed. Onthe other hand, the demand for reclaimed asphaltpavement (RAP) skyrocketed because the residualliquid asphalt within the material (usually 3-5

Branching out to new markets began with the purchase of an older RDS-15, which Riverside had purchased from aformer North Carolina business. It was the first time Norris was able to see the productivity Riverside was missing out onfor years.

percent) makes the road building process more eco-nomical. In fact, because of a nationwide effort tostretch dollars and limit spending, the market saw agrowth of 6.1 million tons in just one year, making ajump from 56 million tons in 2009 to 62.1 milliontons in 2010.
Riverside quickly gained asphalt and concretecustomers, and it wasn’t long before its customerbase had grown exponentially. Very quickly, thecompany’s usual residential and commercialbuilders, asphalt manufacturers and landscaperswere taking advantage of Riverside’s expanded offer-ings. In addition, by simple word of mouth amongthose in these industries, new customers learned ofthe new crushing company and began requestingproducts and services.
“We couldn’t continue to put all of our eggs in onebasket. If we had kept relying strictly on sand andgravel, I don’t know that we would have survived,”Norris said. “But expanding our services to includecrushing concrete and asphalt gave us anotheravenue of income when the sand business wasdown.”
So as the recession sank in, Norris and theRiverside crew watched other companies dissolve inthe downturn as they continued production across abroadened market.
The new impact at RiversideBuying the RDS-15 closed circuit plant has made
all the difference for both Riverside and its expandingcustomer base. The RDS-15’s return conveyor cutsout the associated operating expenses and laborcosts. For example, in a 10 hour day, an employeeearns about $200. Add the cost of running, fueling,repairing and maintaining an additional piece ofequipment, which averages about $100 per hour, andthe total is roughly $7,200 in a six day workweek.The savings are substantial.
The RDS-15 took the lead role in asphalt produc-tion because the plant produces a consistent, cubicalproduct sized to the necessary specs. For example,Riverside puts a 5/8-inch screen on the bottom anda 1-1/2-inch screen on top and sets the machine toreturn the top two conveyors to the impact crusher tosize the material. The outcome is 100 percent 5/8-inch minus material and a 20 percent increase inproduction, which equates to greater production inless time, lower labor costs, less fuel consumptionand lower operating expenses.
Norris says asphalt has risen to the top ofRiverside’s production list and now accounts forabout 60 percent of the business. The companycrushes an average of 950 tons of asphalt per day.
Seeing things were going well, Norris decided totake it one step further. The unit had worked well,but it had been in operation for nearly two decades.
Norris had worked with the IROCK team on severaloccasions to ask questions and fulfill parts andservice needs. He was always impressed withIROCK’s support, he said, so what came next was anatural progression.
Hitting the roadNorris decided the used RDS-15 would be best as a
backup crusher and screening plant and Riversidewould further excel with a new crusher on the frontlines. During one of his calls with IROCK, Norrisdiscussed purchasing a new unit. Sure enough, justthree months after he purchased the used machine,he and IROCK closed the deal on a new RDS-15.
However, rather than using the new RDS-15 onsiteas he suspected, the new unit became the company’straveling machine and the intended standby crusherremained stationary at the Riverside site. Riversidehas been running both crushers steadily ever since.
Riverside’s mobile crew and machine travel to siteswithin two hours of home base, where contractorshave stockpiled anywhere from 20,000 to 35,000 tonsof material for Riverside to crush and sort.Meanwhile, its customer base has become substan-tial enough to keep the traveling RDS-15 away fromhome year round. The company travels through areasalong the North Carolina coast and repeats the routeeach year.
The RDS-15’s closed circuit design makes it idealfor the road. Because the machine incorporates botha screener and a crusher, there’s little need topurchase or haul a screener separately when theRiverside crew hits the road. Still, even though mosttraveling takes place near home, Norris still is asked
whether hauling a crushing unit from site to site is ahassle.
“No, it’s not a hassle,” Norris says. “The bottom lineis, this plant is the whole kit and caboodle on onechassis. We can drag it down the road, pull into acustomer’s site and set up. We don’t have to haul thecrusher with one truck and a screen with another. It’sall right there together.”
This traveling crew recognizes the importance ofthis, as the RDS unit is just a portion of the travelingoperation. With all of the conveyors, excavators andother equipment, the crew has to transport a total ofnine loads of equipment in and out of each job. Oneload fewer is something the team embraces, and thesavings show.
Rise aboveNorris said he’s fortunate to have taken the plunge
when he did, just when demand for asphalt wasintensifying and the economy was taking a turn forthe worst. The journey through diversification isn’tone that will end soon. Rather, taking a chance andlooking for new, more profitable opportunities madefor a more successful company overall.

when you’re looking atgovernment work. Andeven some of the residen-tial section also is reallypushing for green, so itgives us an avenue tomarket our company alittle better.
What do you like mostabout the Hartl CrushingBucket, such as mainte-nance issues and stufflike that?
Maintenance has beenvery minimal. With onlyhaving to grease at theone port at 40 hours andthe other one at 80hours, it makes it so nice.It takes some of the oper-ator error out of the pos-sibility. So what we do isrun it all week long, wegrease once a week on theone, and every other weekon the other. And it’s aneasy thing that I can,even as an owner, stop inon the job site and thatMonday we’ve been work-ing after that week, I canactually be there andwatch it being done, so Ican make sure it’s beingdone the way it shouldbe. As for the other thingson the machine, very lit-tle has to be done. Themost we might do is oncea week go around andtweak all the bolts whichis the same thing you’ddo on any other kind ofcrushing plant, it’s notout of the norm, and walkaround on it, and it’sready to go.

When stockpiling postconsumer asphalt shin-gles for recycling intoRAS (recycled asphaltshingles), a chief concernfor the recycling facility isreceiving and maintain-ing clean shingles, freefrom wood, plastic, metal,and other deleterious ma-terials. The recycler mustdo a balancing act be-tween keeping those whobring in the raw materialhappy, providing the enduser with a desirableproduct and staying prof-itable. Two methods aremost often used, each
with its own drawbacksand advantages.
Some facilities try the“Set-It and Forget-It”method. They will setaside an area for the shin-gles to be dumped, andrely on the person dump-ing to leave a clean load.Then, when the area isfull, machines shove it alltogether into a pile. Whilethe initial cost is low, thepotential for contaminatesis high. There are count-less such piles throughoutthe country, many ofwhich have been aban-doned, creating a black
mark on the industry. To process this type of
pile into RAS, additionalhandling and supportequipment is needed. Anexcavator will feed atrommel screen to pullout the fines. The remain-ing material is fed into afour or six person pickingstation who pull out theremaining deleteriousmaterial. A magnet atsome point in this linewould also be advisable.The cleaned shingles arethen either stockpiledagain or fed directly intothe grinding unit.
This method is highcost, machine and laborintensive and time con-suming. It puts little bur-den on the roofing con-tractor or homeowner, andmay provide the facilitywith additional revenuestreams from the recov-ered materials. The rev-enue from those streamswill be small and may notbe enough to cover thehigher processing cost.
Other facilities pro-vide an area to dumpshingles, plus dump-sters for the deleteriousmaterial and site per-
sonnel to go through theloads as they aredumped. A loader or ex-cavator will spread outthe load to make pick-ing through it easier. Ifcontaminates are foundin the load, the cus-tomer is invited to usethe dumpsters (in somecases for an additionalfee,) or take it off site.The cleaned shinglesare stockpiled until pro-cessing is cost effective.
This method shares theresponsibility for cleaningloads between the facilityand roofing contractor or
homeowner. Some maysee this extra effort as adisincentive to bring ma-terial to be recycled.
Whatever method isused, the end result mustbe clean raw material.Without that, the endproduct will be impossi-ble to market. Without amarket, shingles will sim-ply be buried in landfillsand a totally recyclableproduct will continue tobe wasted.
