I had decided to put the article to bed and give it one final read before I e-mailed it off to Pat Boyd who is our new Elksize Editor, even though it would be a day late. That was before I received the news concerning our fellow Elk, Tommy McHugh. Tommy had been feeling a bit worn out the past weeks which prompted him to see his physician. We had closed the lodge several nights before and went out to continue our conversations on how we were going to improve everything from membership, customer service, dinners, charity involvement and social activities at our Lodge. operation for the Coast Guard, I was working many late nights and long days. After working all day (Thursday, April 15th), I rushed home to change out of my uniform with just enough time to get to the Lodge for the Ladies of the Elks dinner service. Fellow Elks Addison Horrell, Bob Snyder and I cooked up a storm and managed to convince the 50-60 diners that we could in fact cook, before we sang a few Karaoke songs before I had to go back to the base for some duty. I made it back home well after 2:00 am and quickly fell asleep. I woke unexpectedly to my phone ringing at four o’clock that morn-ing. When I picked up the phone in my stupor, I immediately felt like some-thing was wrong, especially since I could see it was Scott Courtney (Scooter as those who call him friend know him). Scooter had been at Tommy’s side al-most constantly. He regularly sent out messages on his phone to keep us all informed concerning Tommy’s progress and spirits. But this time, Scooters voice cracked. I could detect that even half asleep. Scooter then said, “A.J., Tommy’s gone!” Tommy was always larger than life and the Elk that I wanted to be. He always offered advice, lent a sympathetic ear and volunteered like it was an addiction. He recently chaired the St Patrick’s Day dinner and party and all of us were looking forward to a great Elk Year! Tommy had always been the one person all of us could count on regardless of the chore, hour of night or what kind of plans he already had. But Tommy was gone. I recently participated in my first District Directors Clinic. We hosted it right here at ‘708. It was truly informative and I came away with some great ideas for membership, "lapsation" and charitable giving. Tommy was going to be a big part of this effort and in many ways he still will play a big part in the coming Elk year. Tommy would be more than a little embarrassed with this article. He was that kind of an Elk. He didn’t need to be center stage, but you sure could not hide a man of his stature. As large as he was, he was bigger inside. When discussing the tenure of an Exalted Ruler, many of us refer to the success and/or failure as his (or her) year. But this isn’t my year; I haven’t really done much yet. And when I do, you can believe that I will have been inspired by Tommy McHugh. Fraternal organizations like ours are having difficult times these days. Some blame it on the economy; some even say these types of clubs have lost touch with mainstream America. I say no! We will make telephone calls to our members who have not paid their dues. We will reach out to their Spon-sors who will make calls as well. We will listen and learn why some good members shy away from our lounges, functions and dinners and then we will make the effort to welcome them back to the lodge with open arms. That’s Tommy’s way.

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who made the Installation Dinner a great success! What a night to remember! Our Ladies did a fine job of preparing the scrumptious appetizers! The Easter event was a definite highlight for the month of April. A SPECIAL THANK YOU goes out to Tammy Manley for organizing the event and man-aging to get lots of the items donated! She had lots of help with the set up and clean up so BIG Thanks to ALL of YOU! See Tammy's article for more de-

All across America's lands there comes a universally celebrated day. In this year of 2010 - Americans and all Elkdom shall feel - and our hearts will swell with love and pride again - as May 9th - Mother's Day will be celebrated

"From sea to shining sea". For remem-brance of our beloved "Moms" should be celebrated by good Elks for all eternity. As America's Ship of State sails on through all life's "thick and thins" - there looms more somber notes ahead- as American citizenry and all Elkdom must celebrate and honor our military services - as May 15th - Armed Services Day comes and Americans pause to

learn, see, and appreciate our necessary military's strengths. Again America's Ship of citizens rolls on until time brings us pause again- as on May 31st - Me-morial Day arrives. This is a special day to appreciate, show respect and revere America's past world war victories that have weathered our beloved Ship of State, yet still America safely and steadfastly sails on with God's everlasting Grace. As Elks all over this great America must know - the Celebrations and Sacrifices of American Citizenship are what make our lives great and shows Elkdom and the world what the true meaning of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity is all about.

Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphati-cally told Frank (and several others) that every one seeing it there would know what he was doing! Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a mo-ment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing. Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house walked home and left it there all night.

To everyone that was so kind to help with this years Easter Party. It was a great Success! I so enjoyed watching the younger kids dance around to our Puppeteer/Singer/Entertainer. Kids enjoyed decorating their Bonnet's and Baskets. (as well as a few adults that were helping them)!! We even had a line of children waiting to make their boats for the boat contest. The Easter Bunny showed up and the kids went wild. The Easter Bunny had the kids hopping and laughing. Definitely, one of the highlights of the day. All of the children left with their decorated Easter Baskets filled with toys, goodies, and their stuffed animals with smiles from ear to ear. He has worked tirelessly and single handedly to produce a publication that is in-formative and relevant to our mission as Elks. In addition to his prowess as a publisher, Jerry regularly assists Linda and the Hall Rental Commit-tee in staffing our hall rentals as well as serving as our Chief Karaoke Guru and has produced unique advertisements, logos and keepsakes while serving as our graphic artist extraordinaire. Being accepted into membership in the B.P.O.E. is still a privilege. It is true that we would like to expand, even double, our membership, but we must be careful that our goal is not achieved by lowering our standards. The Standard that we must use is that Elks are “American Citizens in Good Standing who believe in God and guide their lives by our cardinal principals of fidelity, justice, brotherly love and charity.” Candidates have to have an Elk sponsor them, and two more Elks sign their application in agreement. While there is a $50.00 application fee, it is usually refunded if the application is not approved. Our dues are pro-rated for the current lodge year, and come to less than $8.00 per month. Dues are paid on the night of Initiation into the Lodge. The truth is we all have friends, co-workers, and acquaintances who would not qualify. We also may have neighbors, coworkers and even family members with whom we prefer not to socialize. But after you eliminate the above groups, we each know several qualified people whom we would enjoy seeing getting involved at the Lodge. Why not invite them in, as your guest? For some, it would be the draw of our wonderful Friday night din-ners and dancing. Others might like to attend an event, or even help you out with a Lodge project. Do you know a qualified person who would like to bring a musical instrument down for a jam session, sing at karaoke, or play Scrabble, bridge or bingo? Someone creative who loves to decorate and needs an outlet? Someone who loves to cook for crowds? Even if your friend’s special interest is not an activity you would enjoy, you could bring your friend in and introduce him or her to the participants. There really is something for almost everyone at the Tampa Elks’ Lodge. Membership applications are kept behind the cash register, just ask the Bartender for one to get your sponsorship started.
