VOTING BY-LAWS PROPOSED BY MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE AND BY EXECUTIVE FOR VOTING IN ALACATI 2007 MEETING Proposal 1 The candidate organization, which is to be voted for membership should have a representative actually present in the Annual Meeting of voting year. Proposal 2 The representative/s of the candidate organizations can participate in General Assembly except the session of discussion and voting about them and other candidate organizations. Proposal 3 The candidate organization should declare the Code of Ethics and Practice they follow and in case that they don’t declare any, or have declared one which is not in accordance with or open to question with the Codes of Ethics and Practice of FEPTO, should accept to adjust their codes of practice according to the Codes of Ethics and

Practice accepted by FEPTO. Proposal 4 "Any firm proposal of change (new article, modification or deletion in the by-laws and in the Constitution shall be proposed by four members minimum." Notes For the by-laws they "must be sent to the Council in writing, at least 3 months before the GA" (Constitution Art 8.2). They can be sent to the FEPTO Chairperson and Secretary by E-mail. Proposal 6 We proposed at the GA in Cluj that the training institutes and the accrediting organisations, after the implementation of MTS, were entitled to write on their certificates: this training program is in accordance with the MTS of FEPTO. Notes As we cannot control this, the institutes wishing to add this sentence on their certificate should make a statement and sign it. This proposal is to be discussed during the Alacati GA and afterwards we will decide if it is to be voted. Proposal of a member I would like to recommend a change or an addition to FEPTO's regulations to vote on in Izmir. The following proposals are made to encourage an increase the number of participants in the meetings. I think that we'll need around 100 participants in each meeting to be effective and more productive.

1. An organization who is not sending a representative 2 years in a row will loose their FEPTO status and would have to reapply for membership should they want to be members in the future.

2. Organizations applying for membership will have to send their representatives to

be present physically in the GA twice that is in both phases of the process. Representing an organization or voting for one would not otherwise be possible.

3. A change to the norm in which one person may have more than one vote either for one or more organizations. I propose one vote for one representative.

Oded Navé Answer The Executive has been discussing the proposal and we also wish to encourage the participation, but prefer other ways to reach that purpose. We are not in favour of exclusion by the reason mentioned. The proposal is against the Constitution and the spirit of the federation. It is not the person, but the institute or the organisation, which has the vote. It stands in the Statutes that training institutes have 2 votes and accrediting organisations have 1 vote. It is desirable that all the members sending representatives to all our meetings, but there can be practical difficulties, which stop this from happening. FEPTO wishes to stay as a friendly and firm organisation without forcing. We wish to attract members by creating meetings with inspiration and meaningful exchange. Engagement and activities follows the movement of a wave. The way to improve the organisation and higher the cooperation between institutes goes through creative exchange rather than through regulations and voting. I personally would never be a member of an organisation, which obliged me to participate at their meetings every time. We agree with you on point 2. See the by-law proposals of the Council. REPORT OF RESEARCH COMMITTEE M. Wieser Judith Teszary encourages us to go further in establishing a research project. I suggest to start in the field of psychotherapy and to use Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI, http://www.pearsonassessments.com/tests/bsi.htm) like they are doing it in Austria. The strength of this quantitative instrument is that it is used and translated in several languages: English, German, Hebrew, Italian, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Another advantage would be that we could compare findings with several other psychotherapy researchers; I have seen BSI used widely. Disadvantages are that it is oriented on symptoms, but this is a mainstream line in research, and it costs money (in Germany EUR 56) to buy it. To get useful findings in the effectiveness of psychodrama we have to be sure that we investigate real psychodrama, psychotherapy, and adult patients with a named disorder (WHO ICD-10, International Code of Diseases). If there are waiting lists for treatment we could investigate these patients as a control group and compare it with the treated patients. The research design is as follows: Use BSI before the first session, six months in between, at the end of psychotherapy and six months after psychotherapy. BSI takes 10 minutes. It could be individual psychodrama psychotherapy, psychodrama group psychotherapies or others, but should be declared. Psychotherapist should be a practitioner or trainer and not a trainee. Later on we can implement research in training programs. The trainees could learn to use measurement tools like Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) for quality development. REPORT OF TRAINING COMMITTEE Celia Scanlan and Pierre Fontaine Pierre and Celia have had ongoing contact since Cluj and met briefly in the training standards committee in November at Dave. In February they met for an afternoon and did much work collating information which has been gathered over several years. They have made some modifications to the MTS forms in the light of responses received. Celia undertook to send MTS forms to those who have not replied and those who completed their forms many years ago. There are currently 15 outstanding. We hope to prepare a poster list for Alacati of all the Training and Accrediting Organisations who have met the minimal standards. We are planning to meet with new applicants during their first visit of their organisation to the Annual Meeting. Our purpose will be to assist implementation of MTS. We will go through the MTS document with the applicants and offer help in completing this document or suggestions as to what they might do in order to meet the MTS. For this undertaking we ask the help of members of the training committee. We would anticipate a committee member would need to familiarise themselves with the document and be prepared to give up 30 minutes of their time during the reception period of the AM. If you are willing to be part of this welcoming exercise for new applicants please contact Celia; c.drama@ntlworld or Pierre; [email protected] We are beginning to look at the issue of training for trainers, currently we have a few models from member organisations. This task would be greatly enriched if we had more examples of how training for trainers is practiced by our members. Please send such information to Celia or Pierre. We have had a poor response from Accrediting organisations to the request to complete the MTS forms, we urge those organisations who have not completed this form to please do so in order that we can progress with the issue of National Accrediting Organisations (NAPO) It is nice to be together Anne Schutzenberger, Judith Teszáry

and Pierre Weil in Estoril

REPORT of ETHICS COMMITTEE Arsaluys Kayir Ethics is a multidisciplinary issue. Problems do not arise too often compared to non-ethical matters that occur. This year there was only one ethical question that came to Pierre Fontaine. This was enquiring if there was a code of ethics about the indicated state of co-leaders. Although there was no special statement, there is a general answer for it in the code of ethics of FEPTO. This question gave us a chance to think more about co-leaders work and maybe to add some code. Real or at least imaginary practical cases will help us to know more about the mistakes that can happen between co-leaders in psychodrama. So my wish is that some imaginary cases be sent in order to open a door for discussion. EAP Membership Committee has sent us a questionnaire regarding codes of ethics and asked FEPTO to answer the checklist within 18 months. What they say is that other organisations aspiring to become "Ordinary Members" of EAP are not yet required to fulfil their requirements. However, the committee seeks this information to assess how close the organisation comes to meeting the criteria. While exploring this with a psychodramatist colleague, who is on the Advisory Board of Ethics in Istanbul Chamber of Medicine, he reminded me that there would be differences in the laws of the countries, concerning organisations. In Turkey only chambers have the right to impose a punishment upon an ethical misuse. We psychologists have associations but still have difficulties in forming a chamber .The Local Board of Ethics for Dr. A. Özbek Psychodrama Institute has only the right to give a warning for an ethical misuse. Before accepting and signing EAP's questionnaire, Alacati meeting of FEPTO will be a chance for us to hear some more about the expectations and restrictions of the law regarding psychotherapy organisations of the member countries. The members of the Advisory Board of Ethics are: Pierre Fountaine, Grete Leutz, Ildiko Maevers , Gordon Langley (not yet confirmed ) and Maurizio Gasseau. Grete Leutz and Ildiko Maevers are working on the EAP’s questionnaire. I thank them all for their valuable cooperation. REPORT OF EUROPEAN AFFAIRS M. Wieser As there was an applicant from Austria for European Certificate for Psychotherapy (ECP) I was directly involved and tried to find a time economic solution for the future. So the Section of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Role-play within Austrian Association of Group-psychotherapy and Group-dynamic (ÖAGG) offered to FEPTO to become a National Accrediting Psychodrama Organization (NAPO). Pierre Fontaine first will try to understand how Accrediting Organisations in FEPTO are functioning and later on will propose some rules and guidelines for this NAPO accrediting process. Other ECP applicants have been discussed. Pierre is doing the most work in this (more than 20 ECPs) and FEPTO will get 20% (normal €40) of the ECP application fee (normal €200) from each National Awarding Organization (NAO). In the last EAP (European Association for Psychotherapy) meeting in Vienna, February 2007, I could clarify this with a questioning NAO. They are allowed to charge additional administrative fees if these are transparent to EAP.

In EAP two psychodrama institutes applied for accreditation as European Association for Psychotherapy Training Institute (EAPTI), FEPTO should be involved in the accrediting process as a EWAO and will get a part of their application fee (€30). The one from Milosevic in Belgrade was accepted in the Vienna meeting. There was a theoretical input at the meeting. It was interesting that the formally invited representatives of psychologist in Austria and the European Association of Psychiatrist refused to attend. But others were there to discuss the “Similarities and Differences” in comparison to psychotherapists. Prof Musalek offered interesting terms; instead of evidenced base medicine he suggested value and human based medicine. The political aim of all this is to push a legislation in EU not only for psychotherapists, because the group seems too small. Together with psychologist and psychiatrist it would have more attention of EU. EAP engaged a lawyer in Brussels, who spoke in Vienna. In EAP a lot of things are going on, their budget is around Euro 180.000. Our former chairperson Renée Oudijk is a candidate for vice-president. The next meetings will be in Florence, June 12-17 www.fiap-eap2007.com, October 19 to 21 in Albania, and June 2008 in Brussels.

ANNUAL MEETING LECTURES Conflict management at work and at home A Sociodramatic approach by Marcia Karp Psychodrama is a therapy of relationships, every relationship has conflict and we need to learn again and again how to manage those conflicts at work or in our personal lives. We can ask ourselves Am I consistent in the way I handle conflicts? Is there a pattern to the way I handle conflict? Can I change? Am I the source of the conflict? If so what can I do to alter the approach I make to my significant others. Role Reversal with the Enemy Lecture and demonstration by Friedel Geisler & Hilde Gött An action group prepares itself for meeting another group with a hostile attitude. A sociodrama concept from political work with group role reversal within the interacting small groups and securing its results. A lecture with demonstrations, explanations, reflections and evaluation. Sociodrama – An offer in Educational Work

• understands structures on the level of actions • explores possibilities of action in the political and social field • develops new strategies, often subversive, yet safe • in a small cell – in the micro-cellular space of a not too big group • invents new forms exceeding and extending standard techniques

Does not explore the hidden conditions of the individual - they remain unexplored and safe. A concept in which small groups change roles with each other group:

• role reversal with the opponent • role reversal with the enemy

Differentiate: Role Reversal with the Opponent. We use to have a culture of settling disputes. It belongs to our Western values (Heinrich August Winkler). Main features: inequality – pluralistic. We have a separation of powers! (legislative – executive- judicial)

Page 13: VOLUME 2007 NR 1 FEPTO - News · Foundation “Institute for Psychodrama, Individual and Group Psychotherapy Bern hard Achterberg” – IPIGP dimostantchev@hotmail.com Presented

PAGE 13 FEPTO NEWS

Pluralistic societies develop: exchange of different opinions description of one and the same event and having different point of views for this thereby fighting against each other In sociodrama small groups are confronted with these different points of views and different experiences and they can act them out. Many a dispute can be fought out on the stage.

• it achieves an understanding for the views of others • people may come closer to each other • opposing points of views can be endured more easily

Role reversal within a large group in which different positions are held Role Reversal with the Enemy means something different. Enemies intend evil, they want to malign, to slander and in worst case they want to attack and hurt, maybe they even want to kill. Groups to which you belong often search for means to handle the phenomenon ENEMY. E.g. fields secretly planted with gene manipulated plants shall be destroyed. We do not own these, yet we are all confronted with the resulting pollution in one way or another. Atomic waste on our streets. Today not only representatives of the Right murder foreigners, but we have a high potential of young people from different cultural environments with an explosive violence, who are not integrated, without school qualifications and career prospects, without a future in Germany. Another scene: You go to a foreign country with a certain mission and want to prepare yourself for this threatening task. We want to empower ourselves before exposing ourselves to an open and possibly dangerous situation. The enemy is not in this room. It would be dangerous! Those present here take antagonistic roles. Example on the stage: THEMES by calling Who is involved? Building up of small groups, characteristics by calling The protagonist is a group they start a theme with a concrete situation they must connect their conflicts with the other antagonistic groups present. Therefore scenes are prepared in the different groups according to their specific topics. Prejudices can be put on the stage A recent event can be played A fear can be staged

FEPTO NEWS

PAGE 14

The antagonists (all sub-groups are also antagonists) • at least one counter group has to be set up • it represents the enemy position • more involved groups can easily be found • up to three further small groups are possible

Taking over roles in the corresponding small groups and imaginary scene or expected situation First Phase Second Phase The whole group does role reversal By circular exchange all small groups can experience all positions Personal problematic aspects remain, if possible, within the small groups here a further invention from the director´s side is often needed A changing of the scene A consolidation Choose another genre This leaves room for creativity for each sub-topic should be expanded But sub-topics already experience a consolidation by the fact that each small group has to emphasize and play again The Role Feedback For role feedback all go together to the corresponding place of the small group. That directly activates the memory of the things that happened there. From there feedbacks are given. It is helpful to note them on a sheet of paper. The Evaluation From this possible solutions are developed which can be tried on the stage The Analysis of the Process In the analysis all participants have the possibility to understand and try out first clues of this method

Working with trauma survivors and refugees By Melinda Ashley Meyer Story telling, testimony, scenario thinking and future projection. This workshop is experiential and didactic. The theory of scenario thinking and testimony will be explored from a psychodramatic perspective. A group experience and a demonstration will be carried out. Melinda Ashley Meyer, MA in Expressive Arts Therapy, PhD cand., Director of Psychodrama and Bioenergetic therapist. Melinda started her training in Psychodrama in 1979 and has been a director since 1991. She has been working the past 20 years with trauma survivors. Today she is the Director of the Norwegian Institute for Expressive Arts Therapy and is a part time researcher at the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies. Her dissertation topic is: ”Testimony and Repatriation” Melinda Ashley Meyer Studies of Treatment Effects of Psychodrama Psychotherapy by Michael Wieser This study is concerned with a quantitative systematic overview i.e., a meta-analysis of studies on the effectiveness of psychodrama psychotherapy. The aim is to explore the kind of statistical evidence, which researchers have provided for the effectiveness of psychodrama psychotherapy. The analysis shows that there are a few problems with the research design in those studies, which may cast doubts upon the quality of the outcome. A consensus on the kind of measurement instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of psychodrama psychotherapy would be very helpful to compare studies.

Moreno House M. Wieser

In this photo, reproduced by Helga Wildhaber, you can see J.L. Moreno in front of his former house and at his 80th birthday 1969 in Bad Vöslau, Austria. Since then a plate of the municipality was shown at the entrance. J.L. wanted to buy the house but it was not possible at that time. Now the owner of the house offered formally to sell the house to us psychodramatists for EURO 180.000 (580 square meters, including house, garden and parking ground). Mag. Barbara Pfaffenwimmer and Mag. Rudi Krammer, both Vienna, started in February to build a homepage for the museum to acquire and inform donators. Mag. Helga Wildhaber (Austria) finished her master thesis in psychology.

Under:https://elearning.uni-klu.ac.at/moodle/mod/resource/view.php?id=12051&subdir=/Moreno_Museum_Archive_and_Research_Institute/Wildhaber_H. you can also view the photos and documents from Bad Vöslau. We have started to write an English article (J.L. Moreno worked in Bad Vöslau from 1918 to 1925). J.L.s nephew Joseph Moreno asked me several times to organize a fundraising workshop in Bad Vöslau, so we will start with him. See: Moreno, J. J. (2006). The deeds of my father: William L. Moreno. Korn, J. Müller, N. Navarra Roldan, R. Oudijk are additional members. The international advisory board will include FEPTO council, AIPSIM (C. Baratti), IAGP board (J. Burmeister, president elect), and others. In mid March I was in the bank at Bad Vöslau. Our account shows around EURO 3700. The biggest donator with EUR 2000 was AIPSIM, the Italian association of psychodramatists, through Chiara Baratti. We thank them a lot and of course would like to have this as a model for other associations and training institutes. To rent or buy and renovate the house this project still needs money and therefore we will sell the Moreno house bricks for EUR 10 in Western countries and EUR 5 for people with less money. It is a painting of the house, there are already copies available in a few countries and institutes. I will bring copies to the next annual FEPTO meeting. If someone would like to help in fundraising, you are very welcome.

From my last report, because I was asked to repeat it: If the owner of the house will not rent or sell it to us, we will construct only a virtual museum, archive, and library in internet. Some money will go to that project, the rest we want to return to the donators. Some said this would be too expensive outside EU and there are suggestions to charity. While we would want to return any surplus money to the donors this will in practice be very difficult. We there intend to donate any surplus money to charity and would welcome suggestions as to which charity/charities should be supported. We will decide purely on the grounds of the charities designated by the greatest number. New Bank account according to new EU-regulations! Moreno House project 12.1 Last year, in Cluj, the membership voted with enthusiasm for the idea of the Moreno House, as if we knew what we were undertaking. This had not been a prepared proposal to the General Assembly. The Council has given much consideration to this issue and how this might come to fruition. 12.2 The FEPTO Council is willing to support a project to preserve the Moreno house; however we would need the following criteria to be met:

• The FEPTO Council want to have as partner an association constituted in Austria, with an international participation, and this is a preliminary requirement to continue to co-operate in the Moreno House project.

• The association must be legally constituted, have a Statute of its own and a bank account.

• We wish to know the members of the working group involved in the building of the Moreno House Association.

• We suggest that before the constitution of the association, the working group have an open and clear accountancy.

• We ask to know what are the directions in which the raised founds will be used if the Moreno House project fails.

12.3 After these steps FEPTO will decide in what manner can support and encourage this project.

The International Conference Celebrating J.L. Moreno's Personality will be organized in Sibiu, Romania, between 5th and 7th July 2007. The two Psychodrama Associations in Romania: The Romanian Association of Classic Psychodrama and The Society of Psychodrama J.L. Moreno, offer the possibility of a meeting for all those who wish to pay due respect to J.L. Moreno and to bring their own contributions to psychodrama research. We have chosen Romania, the country where Moreno was born, and the city of Sibiu, a European Cultural Capital in 2007. Horatiu

Message from Adam Blatner Dear Judith, One thing that is needed in our field is a periodic report or history of our development. This should happen at least every ten years. I'd like to host a special issue of our Journal of Group Psychotherapy, Psychodrama & Sociometry. I would like this to be mentioned at the forthcoming FEPTO meeting. We would welcome a 1000-3000 word report from representatives of every country or region. My impression is that psychodrama is growing in some places, stable in other places, perhaps declining in some places. In some areas it is being used a good deal in fields other than psychotherapy, in community building, education, business, religion, personal development, recreation… I wonder if there might be some books that have been published that I haven't heard about, or books about to be published? I mainly want people in FEPTO to know that we are interested in their plans, changes in their standards, etc. I would also like the members to hear about my latest book, as a few might want to purchase it or have their college libraries do so. Interactive & Improvisational Drama: Varieties of Applied Theatre and Performance (Edited by) Adam Blatner, M.D., with Daniel Wiener, Ph.D. Thank you for sharing your lists and materials with me. Warmly, Adam
