Radio France makes Le Mouv' into Parisby Joanna Shore

PARIS - Public broadcaster RadioFrance's alternative rock stationLe Mouv' has finally secured anFM frequency in Paris, in additionto another new frequency in Cler-mont-Ferrand in central France.

In Paris, the Toulouse -basednetwork takes over a frequency for-merly used by another RadioFrance network, classical and jazzstation France Musiques, whichhad previously been operating ontwo frequencies in order to coverthe city adequately. "Work carriedout by [telecommunications compa-ny] TDF on the Eiffel Tower thissummer allowed France Musiquesto be transmitted on just one fre-quency, therefore freeing up thesecond," explains Le Mouv' manag-

ing director Marc Garcia.SRN, the trade group representing

national commercial broadcasters, has been quick to criticise the deci-sion made by French regulator theCSA to approve Le Mouv's new fre-

quency. "Radio France should nothave the monopoly of access to thesereserved frequencies," said SRN pres-ident Marc Pallain in a statement.

But, counters Garcia, "RadioFrance has given back 200 unusedfrequencies in numerous regionssince the arrival of [Radio Francepresident] Jean-Marie Cavada. In

Clermont-Ferrand, for example, wegained one frequency, but havealready given back two. The situa-tion in Paris -is the same-FranceCulture returned its dual frequen-cy. Given that Radio France pre-dates commercial radio, it is truethat it has a large number of fre-quencies. But we give them back."

With these two latest frequen-cies, Le Mouv' will go from coveringfive million to 16 million people bythe end of the year, says Garcia, who expects Le Mouv' to eventual-ly expand even further.

Garcia emphasises that the sta-tion can play an important role inthe development of new talent. "It'sa public service radio. As it is notcommercial, it has a lot of free-dom... as a result, the space left tonew talent is slightly larger."

Absolute Radio reveals its UK partnersby Jon Heasman

LONDON - What do a trendy dancebrand, a Northern Irish TV broadcast-er and a German radiogroup all have in common?

The answer is thatUlster TV, Cream and Ger-man radio grouping Euro-cast are all partnering withAbsolute Radio Interna-tional (ARI) to developradio interests in the UK.

Pan -European radio group ARIwas founded last year by former Cap-ital Radio group head of programmesClive Dickens and Capital's formerhead of international developmentDonnach O'Driscoll (M&M, August11, 2001).

The Absolute Radio UK (ARUK)affiliate has been set up specifically tomake applications or new radiolicences in Britain advertised by theRadio Authority (RA).

The first major licence to be con-

tested by ARUK will be the East Mid-lands regional licence next year.ARUK is proposing a new -music sta-tion Jump FM, which will blend mod-

ern rock and dance.Jump FM's format has

been designed to competedirectly with UK publicCHR station BBC Radio 1,and Dickens claims thatresearch conducted in theregion shows a desire for a

station that combines bothrock and dance. "The revivalin rock and the arrival of numetal has been significant,"he says. "If you're going totarget 30 -somethings, thenyou'll play dance; but if youwant to target teenagers and20 -somethings, dance musicis only one of the music genres theywant to listen to."

Dickens says that the link -up withCream represents a new way for radiocompanies to work with major con-

sumer brands. "We're bringing brandsinto ownership, rather than justadvertising or sponsorship." He alsonotes that Cream is interested indiversifying its brand and developingother brands.

Of ARUK's other partners, UlsterTV (UTV) is one of the two remainingindependent commercial terrestrialTV operators in the UK (VirginRadio's owners SMG being the other).O'Driscoll says that UTV has made "a

strategic decision to get intoradio," also confirmed by itsrecent purchase of CountyMedia in Ireland (M&M,November 3).

Eurocast, a radio invest-ment house which is ownedby German stations HitRadio FFH, Radio SAW, 94.3

RS.2, Radio PSR and RSH, previouslyapplied for the Radio Authority'sregional South Wales licence that wassubsequently awarded to theGuardian Media Group.

Bavarian stations boosted in independence battleby Michael Lawton

MUNICH - A group of small indepen-dent radio broadcasters in Bavariahave won a legal victory over thestate's licensing authority the BLM asthey attempt to avoid being bouncedinto unwanted mergers.

When commercial radio began inBavaria, the BLM licensed a numberof stations on shared frequencies (allbroadcasting for only part of the day)in order to encourage variety. Howev-er, such frequency -sharing arrange-ments have confused listeners, andthe BLM subsequently changed itspolicy, licensing no new shared fre-quencies and putting pressure onexisting operators to merge, in orderto provide a greater consistency ofoutput on their frequencies.

Many did come together, but a fewrefused. Most prominent was Ger-hard Prokscha of Extra Radio in Hof,

which broadcasts four hours a day ona frequency that is otherwise domi-nated by Radio Euroherz. SaysProkscha: "Euroherz is owned bynewspaper publishers and by [Bavar-ian radio entrepreneur Gunther]Oschmann. They've offered us minor-ity shareholding in a new operatingcompany, but, against such powerfulinterests, we might as well give up."

The state's constitutional courtlast month confirmed a previouslower court decision that the BLMcould not force the small stations intoagreements with other operators ontheir frequencies.

Prokscha says Extra sees no rea-son to sign an agreement with Euro-herz, particularly as Extra's formatbroadly fits with the former's output."One of our four hours," he boasts,"has a higher percentage listenershipthan any other hour in Bavaria."

To fight what he sees as the domi-

nance of big operators, Prokscha hasset up an association of independentstations with six others. Three ofthem-Extra, Aladin in Nuremburgand Radio 2Day in Munich-wereinvolved in the court action. The lat-est ruling gives them legal securityafter a legal battle lasting nine years.

The court ruling said the indepen-dence of individual operators wasparamount-and if "rock, RichardWagner, and folk music" were allbroadcast in blocs on the same fre-quency, the market would ultimatelyensure more co-ordination.

Roland Bornemann, the BLM'slegal expert, describes the court's rul-ing as "astonishing" and accuses thejudges of "going back to their youthfulexperiences of steam radio."

Bornemann contends the findingscontradict practical experience, andthat the BLM has a responsibility tolicence financially viable operations.

YEAR IN REVIEW

Looking back and looking aheadDaniel AkermanProgramme director, NRJ Sweden

1) Great! Inspiring and developing.2) My friends and family and thedevelopment of our station.3) September 11.4) Madonna's tour opening inBarcelona.5) A great life and good ratings!

Paul -Rene AlbertiniPresident, Warner Music Europe

1) It was a fantastic year in manyways for me at Warner Music Europe.New teams were built and new talentarrived in the company and therewere great signings.2) The company is also making rapidprogress in becoming a very efficientand impressive global machine whichhas been able to impose all around theworld names that were totallyunknown a year ago. To name afew...artists like Linkin Park or Staindselling millions of records outside theirhome territory gives a flavour of theglobal artist development tool WMI iscurrently putting in place. WarnerMusic has amazing repertoire sourcesfrom all around the world-there is nodoubt that our current global approachwill soon generate very importantupsides. The take off of Warner MusicUK, which has arrived as an aggres-sive major player in the UK market.3) On a personal level, the illness suf-fered by my friend and colleague[Warner Music France president]Philippe Desindes, who I am glad tosay is recovering. Also, changesimposed on the industry as a whole bythings like piracy; and putting peopleout of jobs throughout the business.4) So Solid Crew and Linkin Park.5) All the seeds planted in 2001 willgrow into f***ing great baoboabs!

Jay BermanChairman/CEO, IFPI

1) On the whole, it was a good year forme personally and a very good yearfor the team at IFPI worldwide.2) All of my kids, my granddaughterand a couple of very close friendscame to London to celebrateThanksgiving with us and I got to see

M&M staff asked music and radio, personalities how theywill remember of 2001 and what's shaping up for 2002.They all faced the same five questions:1) How was the year for you/your company?2) What made you happy?3) What made you sad?4) What made you groove in 2001?5) What are your expectations for 2002?Here are their answers...Diana Krall perform on my anniver-sary.3) September 11; Rudi Gassner'sdeath; George Harrison's death.4) The Eagles concert in London.5) Hopefully, to see Van Morrison on agood night.

Paul BurgerPresident, Sony Music Europe

1) 2001 was nothing like I expected,not that I really know what I expect-ed. It was a year of learning, of listen-ing, of re -focussing on the music, ofre-establishing priorities, of rebuild-ing our London -based regional team,and of setting in motion new projectsand directions.2) Our growing success with Travisaround Europe as I passionatelybelieve the band have it in them toachieve unprecedented long-term suc-cess on a global level. Our new commit-ment to dance music and the successwe've enjoyed with artists like RogerSanchez, and records like Daddy DJ.Taking Destiny's Child to pan-European superstar status withSurvivor has been really rewardingand seeing the fantastic acceptance ofLeonard Cohen's new album after allthese years, peaking in your top three,was a real thrill! Finally, having thenumber one chart share label inEurope in both singles and albums, notto overlook our vastly improved compa-ny showing, has been deeply satisfying.3) I'm saddened by developments thatmake it harder for real bands andartists to take their music to audi-ences, and play live, develop organi-cally and make it to the top. I'm sad-dened we haven't yet done a better jobin finding and developing Europeanartists and seeing them near the topof the M&M Border Breakers chart;

we have to adapt our organisationmore quickly to the repertoire andmarket changes that affect us all. Ona personal note, Obie's passing wasone of the saddest days; he was both anatural leader as well as being a trulylegendary and charismatic recordman; and George Harrison's deathaffected me as it did the rest of theworld. But finally the saddest day ofall had to be September 11.4) To mention just a few: Jamiroquai/Little L, Wyclef and Mary J Blige/911,Sade/By Your Side, Train/Drops OfJupiter, Garou and Celine/Sous LeVent, Coldplay/Yellow, Alicia Keys/Falling, Nelly Furtado/I'm Like A Bird.5) Sarah Connor, Heist, DJBoulevard, Monica Naranjo,Puretones, Lost Prophets, Elisa,Cradle of Filth, Awa...

Martin CampbellDirector of programming andadvertising, The Radio Authority UK

1) Busy, with much crystal ball gazingregarding Ofcom, digital and thewireless future.2) Hearing White Stripes getting air-play.3) The amount of misunderstanding/misinformation about the Authority'sstance on limiting daytime automation.4) Hearing White Stripes getting air-play.5) A Lonnie Donegan revival year-or,failing that, the digital penny (andprice) dropping, so the array of differ-ent formats can demonstrate exactlywhat commercial radio can deliver.

Loma ClarkeHead of mainstream program-ming, BBC Radio 1 (UK)

1) Mad, bad, and dangerous to wit-ness-a combination of young folks

going "retro" and oldies trying to behip, and a few rare moments of sheercreative brilliance. All good, apartfrom the return of corduroy flaredtrousers!2) Network X-The UK governmentand the BBC finally agreed to be rad-ical and give people who love urbanmusic a national radio station-histo-ry in the making.3) The obvious events of September11, but also the Elton duet withEminem at the Grammy's.4) Last NitelThe Strokes; GotU/Pharoe Monch.5) More musicians with attitude-bring 'em on!

1) It's been a bit of a turbulent yearhere obviously, a time of change, butit's given me the chance to review howwe do things at Virgin UK and I feelwe'll come out of the year stronger inevery way than we began it.2) The astonishing turnaround andglobal pick up on Atomic Kitten andthe runaway success of Blue made mevery happy. Seeing Hugh's[Goldsmith] Innocent label reallyblossoming after only three years wasfantastic. I was delighted also that wemanaged to recruit Philippe Ascoli tohead Virgin's A&R operation.3) The deaths of various friends andacquaintances in the industry-par-ticularly the loss of Obie-saddenedme, as did the Jonathan King busi-ness. In my capacity as head of theBPI PR committee I am sad and sur-prised that the media are still sobroadly unsympathetic to the princi-ple of intellectual copyright whichunderlies the file sharing/piracy issue.4) Seeing Hut's recent signing TheMusic in a pub in Kingston was ablast; so were Haven at King'sCollege. The growing strength of thelive music scene has made the wholeindustry more exciting for me thisyear. Hearing the new Gomez albumwas a revelation too.5) Expect the unexpected is the bestway to look ahead I think. Thatsaid, I'm confident that Virginlabels' many development acts willblaze a trail both here and interna-tionally over the next year. We've

1) Fantastic ... exciting and memo-rable!2) From a personal point of view, itwas really fun to be back working inradio. From a professional perspec-tive, Heart 106.2 has finished theyear on a real high with the bestaudience figures in the station'shistory.3) The events of September 11 haveovershadowed everything else, andare without doubt the most signifi-cant in recent history. They havemade everyone reflect not only onworld events, but also on their ownpersonal values and priorities. As pro-gramme director of Heart 106.2 I amvery proud of the whole team and theway they responded to the situationin such a sensitive and appropriateway, but the events themselves wereutterly devastating.4) Kylie.5) More of the same... we've had a fan-tastic year and we ain't finished yet!

Rick DobbisPresident, Sony Music International

YEAR IN REVIEW

continued from page 5

Jens -Otto PaludanManaging director,Universal Music Denmark

1) It has been a good year, both per-sonally and commercially.2) Seeing my daughter grow up.3) Like so many others: September 11(when I also had the privilege ofattending Sting's concert in Tuscany).4) Safri Duo's breakthrough!5) Another difficult and challengingyear for the record industry. However,I anticipate a change towards the endof next year, which will allow thebusiness to consolidate its positionand permit considerable growth andfuture successes.

1) Busy doing my annual party inIbiza; getting my album out; having anumber one hit single; finally bring-ing my girlfriend to New York; anddoing my first live show.2) Love made me happy personally;also the acceptance for myself and forwhat I do by a large audience.3) September 11.4) Alicia Keys; my own stuff and myradio show produced by Wise Buddha;and Bjork who has made the perfectchill out album (Vespertine).5) First to go on vacation, then startmy second album which will hopeful-ly take less than 20 years to be com-pleted; start my residency in Ibizaand in London and get my mother tocome over to Europe.

Stephen ShrimptonChairman & CEO,Warner Music International

1) Overall, I would have to say it wasa good year for WMI despite thetragedies, problems and difficultiesthat beset not just our industry butthe world as a whole. We sold millionsof records around the world and hadlots of hits but-at one end of thespectrum-too many people lost theirjobs and-at the other end-too manypeople lost their lives.2) Working with a team of WMI peoplearound the world who, despite all thedifficulties, performed magnificentlythroughout the year. Enthusiasm isinfectious and being around peoplewho refuse to be brought down by talkof recession and gloom is extremelyrewarding and encouraging.3) A lot of things including good peo-

ple being out of work. But the untime-ly death of George Harrison was agreat personal sadness.4) Madonna's concert at Earl'sCourt-the ultimate showwoman.5) My hopes are for a more settled busi-ness with increased piracy protection, less gloom, and hopefully better sales.

Thomas M. SteinPresident, BMG Europe, executive

vice president, worldwide A&R

1) It was a year of transition and aperiod of restructuring. Our aim wasto make BMG more profitable, torespond more quickly and effectivelyto future marketplace changes, as wellas to focus on A&R, global marketing, and our worldwide priority artists.2) It makes me happy to see that wehave already achieved a great num-ber of these goals and can say that"BMG is back". Also, I have beenpleased with the success of AliciaKeys, Westlife, Dido and Guano Apes.I feel that we have the right people inplace for moving forward.3) No doubt it was the tragedy ofSeptember 11-a date and its reper-cussions which will always remain inour minds. But then again, even inthese sad times the entertainmentindustry proved how great its strengthand impact can be. A great deal ofmoney was raised for the various vic-tims relief funds, which came from TVfundraisers, concerts, specials and CDreleases like Whitney Houston's StarSpangled Banner or Elvis Presley'sAmerica The Beautiful. The generosityof the BMG family was also very mov-ing: To date, BMG employees aroundthe world have given a total of $93,322to the BMG New York Heroes ReliefFund, our parent company Bertels-mann also contributed $2 millionimmediately after the tragedy.4) All the creative artists that werepresented at our worldwide andEuropean A&R meetings-new pro-jects coming from the differentregions show us that local repertoirehas never been so strong, so impor-tant and so ready for global success.5) 2002 will be a record year for BMGgiven our recent restructuring and ourterrific release schedule. We willrelease international artists likeChristina Aguilera, Santana, TLC aswell as European and local top sellerslike Dido, Foo Fighters, Monica,Sarah McLachlan, Kenny G, AlanJackson, David Gray, Vertical Horizonand Supermen Lovers, El Canto Loco,Pino Daniele, Gotthard and PeterMaffay. We believe that we will have a

shot at breaking profitabilityrecords-we'll probably make the bestnumbers ever in BMG's history.

Managing director,Kiss 100 and Magic 105.4 (UK)

1) This was a very good year for Kissand Magic in terms of awards, audi-ence and revenue but we also had alot of fun, for which I'd like to thank alovely bunch of people.2) Kiss winning [Media Week's]Media Brand of the Year was greatbecause we didn't expect it. Thatmade me so happy I can't rememberwhat happened next!3) September 11 aside, GeorgeHarrison's death made me verysad...sorry, it's an "in your 40's" thing.4) Mixmag at Cargo every Wednesday.5) EMAP has some interesting thingslined up in TV and radio for next yearwhich should keep us all busy.

Tony WadsworthPresident, EMI Music UK & Ireland

1) The best yet! All areas firing on allcylinders!2) Gorillaz, the ultimate manufac-tured act, selling more than every-body else's manufactured acts.3) The loss of George Harrison.4) Robbie Williams at the Royal AlbertHall and Coldplay at the BRITs.5) Kylie-it's her world, she just letsus live in it...

Alison WenhamChief executive, AIM (UK)

1) It's been a another typical year.Very exciting, very busy, frustrating,rewarding.2) It's been another fine performanceby the independent sector. Lots of verygood albums out this year. And, Ithink, five of the Mercury nominationswent to indie acts, which outperformsour market share, showing that long-term A&R does have its dividends. It'sjust a different business model now.3) The fact that we seem to be back toopen warfare. It's so worrying for ourfuture and our children. No matterhow much democracy tries to achievea decent life for people we seem toalways fail.4) We like Basement Jaxx a lot and Ilike the Dandy Warhols. We've beenlistening to The Beatles and GeorgeHarrison in the office this week. It's anice trip down memory lane. The fact

that I was there first time aroundmakes me groove. And my dog Danny.5) I think it will be a tough economicyear. I think we'll see new groupingsgrowing up. God knows whether we'llsee the dotcom business take off nextyear-there's an awful lot riding onthat. We've got to see the promiseturn into even a glimmer of reality, sothat we can direct our businessaccordingly. Let's get something outthere. I hope Napster opens up 2002.

Patrick ZelnikPresident, Naive,

President, UPFI (France)

1) For me, challenging as usual! ForNaive, a pretty good year-we expectan increase in turnover of at least35% over last year.2) Muse entering the chart directly atnumber two; Pink Martini reaching250,000 album sales in France; andalso breaking Aston Villa, one of themost promising rock acts. To quoteFred, their lead singer: "This time withthe Naïve team, we are living a greatlove period". Also, as vice-president ofImpala, the increasing strength of thebody was illustrated by the growth ofits membership-from 400 to 1,500members all over Europe in one year.3) Records becoming the number oneTV advertised products in the country. It is very sad to see how the industryis turning records into normal con-sumer goods. It is also sad to listen tothe same titles turning the knob of theradio. More than 10 spins a day, it's anightmare... Needless to say that theconcentration is increasing despiteUPFI and Impala's actions.4) Shakedown. An electro-funk duowe signed last summer. Their secondsingle At Night already appears in thespecialised charts in France and theUK, and radio stations such as FG arealready playing the title. Naive and Idid groove Shakedown in 2001, every-body will in 2002.5) More diversity in the charts and inthe music industry. The artistic thingis more exciting than ever, and musicis more and more important in peo-ple's lives. Curiously the record indus-try is not fully benefiting from thesepositive trends but I am still opti-mistic because I think that we havereached the bottom of a cycle. InEurope, a consumer buys an averageof three CDs per year. If we couldincrease this figure to four it wouldrepresent a 33%.increase of the recordindustry turnover. Needless to saythat if this fourth CD was a Naive oneit would be brilliant !

Jazz 2001: How was it for you?Diana Krall and St. Germainare selling millions of albumsaround the world may be a signthat jazz is recovering from a

decade of eroding sales. The 14 -episode Ken Burns "Jazz" documen-tary, aired by the BBC in June, alsoraised the genre's profile and spurredboth renewed interest in classic jazzand sales of repertoire by iconic fig-ures such as Louis Armstrong, BillieHoliday and Charlie Parker. Thespark also saw a revival in thefortunes of jazz on the air, asprogrammers picked up on vocal andeleCtronica vibes.

An important year for the genrethen, and one reflected in thethoughts and opinions of leading jazzradio producers and presenters.

Frederic Charbaut, programmemanager, Paris Jazz/ParisArtists such as St. Germain, ErikTruffaz, Laurent de Wilde, and NilsPeter Molvaer have created a newsound. Electronic jazz is a new breakwhich we programme on Paris Jazz-I think Miles Davis would have likedand played this music. I think thatvocal jazz is the best way to discover[the genre]. When you talk about voic-es, you immediately think of BillieHoliday, Sarah Vaughan or EllaFitzgerald. It's very hard and coura-geous today to be a jazz singer-peo-ple like Kurt Elling, Diana Krall,Rene Marie and David Linx representthe future.

When re -issues of Miles Davis,John Coltrane or Duke Ellington areproposed, it's always a pleasure andan event. We programme these CDs,but new productions are more impor-tant for us. Today Europe has animportant place in jazz. Many artistsfrom France, Italy or the north ofEurope can easily rival Americanartists. About 25 per cent of ParisJazz programming is dedicated toEuropean jazz.

Pino Saulo, producer, Radio RAISuite/Rai 3/RomeThe most popular artists [of 2001]were possibly Brad Mehldau or KeithJarrett. Also the concert of EnricoRava and Paolo Fresu was very popu-lar. Many listeners loved two concertswhich could have been judged as diffi-cult: "Mondo Ra"-an orchestra ofyoung musicians devoted to the musicof Sun Ra-and Annie Whitehead's"Soupsong" concert dedicated to themusic of Robert Wyatt.

As for electronica, I like some stuff, such as Us 3, St.Germain. I enjoyedthe Llorca album and I listen tothings like the Red, Hot & Cool dou-ble CD [GRP] with Franti, MC Solaar,Lester Bowie, Ron Carter, etc. The re-issue of classic albums like Coltrane'sAscension, releases by ESP or BygActuel, or Blue Note's Rudy VanGelder Edition are very good becausethey allows listeners the chance todiscover pearls and jewels.

This year we seem to have experi-

At the end of an fascinating year for the genre, M&Mcanvassed a number of jazz radio producers and pre-senters about artists and music at their stations. Who areradio's top artists? Is club -oriented jazz just a flash in thepan? Are audiophile re -issues an issue for radio? Whatcountry or trends are hot? Terry Berne gets the lowdown.

enced a northern explosion, withSwedish, Norwegian and Finnishmusicians in festivals and polls.Electronic jazz seems to be the newtrend, although musicians have beenworking in [this area] for years.

Matthias Kirsch, head of music,Jazz Radio 101.9/BerlinThe most popular new artist has to bevocalist Jane Monheit. We're alwayslooking for new quality voices, and wehave lots of young vocalists on theplaylist, including Melissa Walker,Rene Marie and Carla Cook.

We've recently started a new pro-gramme called "The White Room,"which features jazz electronica. Coreartists would be St. Germain or

Ronnie Jordan. We also launched aLatin jazz show in March. Now thatwe have definitely established ourmain format-which is mainstreamjazz-we thought we could open up onthe weekends.

For major re -issues we usuallymention them when playing a trackby the artist, or by finding a place onour web site. Some, like the recentMiles Davis albums In A Silent Wayor Bitches Brew were hard to pro-gramme simply because of the lengthof the tracks. France, Scandinaviaand Germany are the three mostimportant and challenging areas pro-ducing jazz right now, developing themusic further but also keeping main-stream jazz alive.

David Fishel - jazz producer, NRK 2/Oslo (Alltid Jazz:(www.nrk.no),Jazz Scene (hffp://fazzscene.no)NRK is developing Alltid Jazz (AlwaysJazz), a 24 -hour digital jazz station, and has decided to skip FM altogeth-er. Alltid's internet launch will takeplace this month. The programme willbe a constant loop lasting about 30minutes, with new items inserted asneeded. Depending on the success ofthe show, other Scandinavian serviceswill be invited to join, making it atruly pan -Scandinavian project.Meanwhile, Jazz Scene-now internetonly-is about to celebrate its 10thanniversary.

Joe Lovano is on his way to leg-endary status. He has a phenomenalfree -flowing creativity and improvis-ing quality that hasn't been seensince Sonny Rollins. At First Lightfrom Silje Nergaard is an excellentalbum [to be released internationallyon Emarcy in February]. The fact thatpop, R&B, or hip -hop singers mightinclude their interpretation of a stan-dard on an album will help insure thepopularity of jazz vocals. The mixtureof DJs and live music, a really freshjazz experience, I believe is a stylepioneered in Norway and especiallyOslo, at clubs like 131a (Blue).

Marco Fullone - artistic director,Monte Carlo Nights, Radio MonteCarlo/MilanMonte Carlo Nights airs every nightfrom 21.00-2.00 and is a mix of allstyles from classic to mainstream todance and electronica. St. Germainwas one of the biggest hits this year. Also popular is Gotham Project (YaBasta), which is a very sophisticatedmix of Piazzolla, club music and jazz.We also had a big response from ouraudience for vocalist Rachelle Farrell. We played the 10 minute -long I CanExplain from the album Individuality(Blue Note) every night and receivednumerous calls and e -mails askingabout this incredible voice.

In France there are many artistswho take older jazz from the 50s and60s and transform it into a new styleof club music. The clubs are the cen-tre of this evolution. It's music of thepast fused with music of the future, creating a new sound but with thesame mood. One of the most beautifulcompilations of the year is Trip DoBrasil, 2 [Sony Music France].

David Carr - genre channelmanager, Jazz, Blues, World Music,Music Choice/UK/EuropeWe have three full time jazz channels:mainstream, which covers acousticjazz from early through bebop to cool;modern which takes in funk, fusion, electric and avant-garde to contempo-rary jazz; and big bands from theirbeginnings to the present. This yearhas seen a special push for UK artistson the mainstream channel. We'vehad lots of good feedback on artistslike vocalist Stacy Kent and AlexWilson, winner of the BBC jazz award

continued from page 7for best newcomer. For modern jazzwe did an extensive interview withJoe Zawinul.

Jazz vocals have seen a majorcomeback over the last few yearswith labels signing singers such asSandra Wilson, Claire Martin, NickiLeighton -Thomas and Clare Teal. Many contemporary pop artists, fromSting to Joni Mitchell have picked upon jazz and are incorporating intotheir music.

Because we're a pan-Europeanservice it's very important for us notto become London -centric. Sweden isvery fertile ground for really goodcontemporary jazz. We'll soon launcha new programme featuring jazzblended with world rhythms andvoices.

Roger Wright - controller, BBCRadio 3/UKWe've become known for more cuttingedge jazz. As media partner for theLondon Jazz Festival we'll be pro-gramming 40 hours of jazz from theevent. When we talk about jazz it's amuch broader umbrella than before.Jazz, world music and classical nolonger have the currency as cate-gories that listeners want to putthem in. There's a greater sense andembracing of many more styles andtraditions, and there are many lessniches to fragment the market. Morekinds of music are available, so it'smore easily assimilated, and theresult is more styles being developedmore quickly.

One of the trends which we reflectand try to contribute to is the collab-oration of artists, like Courtney Pineworking with Bobby Watson, or AndySheppard with Annie Whitehead. The station's on-line activity is drivenalmost exclusively by our jazz output. We have three artist presenters now:pianist Julian Joseph, and singersStacy Kent and Claire Martin.

Steve Quirk - head of music, JazzFM/London/ManchesterAn artist who has gone from strengthto strength and has huge crossoverappeal is Diana Krall. In conjunctionwith the release of The Look Of Love[Verve] earlier this year, Jazz FM dida huge poster campaign in Londonwith her picture and the Jazz FMlogo which was quite effective. Herpopularity has helped the format con-siderably and given it more massappeal. George Benson's return to hisjazz roots with the Absolute Bensonalbum also pulled people in towardthe genre. We generally work on a 50-50 split between vocals and instru-mentals. The consensus is that peo-ple prefer vocals.

Specialist presenters definitelypicked up on St. Germain, but it's notreally for Jazz FM daytime airplay. The Ken Burns documentary was fea-tured heavily by specialist presenterson the station. The smooth jazz for-mat is particularly strong right now.Ride by Boney James (Warner) isabout to go Gold after just threeweeks. A new show, "Late Lounge,"plays ambient jazz sounds from22.00-1.00 weeknights.

Cream of the current cropPieranunzi/Johnson/BaronPlay Morricone (CAM Jazz)

Pianist and 1997 Django d'Or winnerEnrico Pieranunzi reveals himself as aconsummate keyboard impressioniston this tribute to Ennio Morricone.Accompanied by bassist Marc Johnsonand drummer Joey Baron, the albummoves from the delicate Addio FratelloCrudele to the sizzling swing of LaVolglia Matta. Pieranunzi's uncannylyricism and sense of detail, welded tothe beautiful and evocative melodies ofMorricone's Italian songbook, placehim among the most accomplishedEuropean pianists of his generation.Once again Rome's Sonic studios deliv-er the richest sound imaginable.

Clare TealThat's The Way It Is (Candid)

Not since the 40s have there been somany fine jazz vocalists recordingand performing, making it all themore difficult to stand out from thecrowd. What distinguishes ClareTeal's warm and soulful voice is herability to turn a simple lyric like thatof Harold Arlen's Ill Wind into abluesy lament full of drama. Her owncompositions, like opener Messin'With Fire, are lyrically and musicallysophisticated, and her singing exudesboth discipline and spontaneity. Ablyaided by pianist Martin Litton andreedman Trevor Whiting, this poisedCD puts Teal near the top.

Salvatore BonafedeOrtodoxa (Red Records)

Lively straight -ahead session of orig-inals by pianist Bonafede and anexceptional quintet leaturing theresourceful Rosario Giuliani on altoand soprano saxes and FabrizioBosso on trumpet and flugelhorn.Post -bop energy melded to hints ofsouthern European popular song-made explicit in Pasion and the pret-ty Federico Fellini-lend the music afestive air. On /f I Were A Ball thepiano, bass and drums interact mar-vellously, captured to perfection byGoffredo Gibellini, who ought togarner attention for his recentrecordings.

Pieranunzi Joh

Bacalov Quartet 'Jasper van

Trilok GurtuThe Beat Of Love (Blue Thumb)

Produced by Wally Badarou andrecorded in Bombay, Johannesburg,New York and the UK, this is perhapsthe percussionist's most varied album.Featuring a handful of worldbeatstars, including Angelique Kidjo andSalif Keita, it is also his most com-mercial. Bottom -heavy grooves, sump-tuous electronic arrangements andlayered vocal choruses see this pioneerof ethno-jazz fashioning a forceful, dri-ving collection. Its cosmopolitan ambi-tions are best heard on the indo-elec-tronica of Maya and Tuhe.

Luis Bacalov QuartetTango And Around (CAM Jazz)

An excellent addition to the growingcatalogue of contemporary approach-es to the venerable tango form firstproposed by Astor Piazzolla. Hiscountryman, pianist Bacalov, suc-cessfully fuses tango's dramatic andemotional language with the moreanarchic jazz idiom. More meditativethan rousing, these mostly originaltunes approach the tango as thoughit were unknown territory ripe forexploration. On bandoneon, UlisesPassarella matches the leader's toneand style beautifully.

Jasper van 't HofUn Incontro Illusorio (Challenge)

A follow-up to the wonderful UnMondo Illusorio (1998), which fea-tured van 't Hof improvising on theBaroque organ of the Santa Mariadelle Rosa church in Bonefro, Italy. This time out, Joey Baron's drumsnicely punctuate the Dutchman'sSatie-like miniatures, and on TheUltimate the two duel in a steadilybuilding crescendo. Slow and incan-tatory, this intriguing music steadilyseduces the listener with its strangesounds and other -worldly invention.

ARTISTS & MUSIC

Bush -the UK rock band the US lovesby Paul Sexton

If Bush had a crisp green English "fiver", or aneven ten bucks, for every story about their mod-est British profile compared to their interna-tional stardom, especially in America, they'dprobably never need to record again.

Instead, the rock quartet from west Londonare wisely focusing on the music, touring behindtheir new, fourth studio album, Golden State(East West/Elektra), in a career that nowembraces seven years of success and worldwidealbum sales of 14 million. Golden State hasenjoyed healthy initial sales in such territoriesas Germany, Austria and Holland, while theirextensive European tour continues untilDecember 7. They resume shows in America, where lead track The People That We Love wasa top ten airplay hit at both modern rock andmainstream rock formats, just two nights later.

The discrepancy in Bush's domestic and for-eign standings is undeniable, but lead singerGavin Rossdale is encouraged by the responseto Golden State. "The reaction's been amazing,we've had excellent support from [London alter-native station] Xfm, and Kerrang! and thewhole metal press," he says. "We've always had

excellent support from the rock press [and]MTV's been amazing, they always have." MTVand Xfm presenter Zane Lowe describes GoldenState as "Bush's finest album, a great rockrecord. They tour relentlessly, they're of the oldschool where you make a record and tour it real-ly hard. And The People That You Love soundsgreat on the radio. I saw them live recently andI saw a band that had the bit between theirteeth again."

Warner Music Europe marketing manager,US labels, Jacob Harregard says thatGermany remains Bush's best European terri-tory. "We're only one single in, and alreadypast sales of 60,000 with the album there," henotes, adding that its predecessor, 1999's TheScience Of Things, has sold. 88,000 inGermany. "I'm pretty confident we'll pass thatone," he says. "The band have done a lot ofpromo, and we have a second single, HeadfulOf Ghosts, early next year."

Rossdale maintains a healthy perspective onthe fact that some members of the British mediahave almost made Bush -bashing a nationalsport. "I don't actually read anything individu-ally, but sod's law has it that the only one I read,my mum gets upset by something, and shemakes me read something really hideous. I'mgoing, 'Mum, I'm avoiding everything, what areyou doing?' People always want to bang onabout other things about our lives, but theydon't quite appreciate-that's 7-8,000 people [ata gig] in London that have gone berserk. We hadthe influx of the nu -metal stuff [in the UK], soit's going to be really interesting to me to seewhether kids say 'Hold on, we've got one ofthose ourselves'."

Brothers Keepers singout against racismby Gesa Birnkraut

The German music industry:sdetermination to combat racism inits country has resulted in a newinitiative-Lightkultur. ReleasedDecember 3 through WarnerMusic Germany, the album is acompilation of tracks recorded bythe leading lights of Afro -Germanhip -hop, soul and reggae, along-side colleagues from the UK andJamaica. All proceeds from therecord and live performances willgo to victims of race crimes.

The collective, known as BrothersKeepers, features artists such asXavier Naidoo, Samy de Luxe,Brooke Russell, and Nadja from NoAngels. The UK contingent is repre-sented by Roots Manuva, BlakTwang, Creamo, among others. Afterthe success of the first single,Adriano, which was released on July5, 2001 and sold over 210,000 copies, the plan for an album was formulat-ed and up and running in twomonths. "It is amazing how quickly

everything was produced," saysNorbert Rudnitzky, head of Warnersubsidiary Downbeat Records, which is co-ordinating the project."And the artists came [in] on theirown with the songs," he adds.

The original idea for the charityrecord came from the singer Adouand his small Cologne -based labelNitty Gritty Records. "When Adoucame to us with the idea, we real-ly wanted to do this," continuesRudnitzky. "Everyone from BerndDopp (Warner Music Germanypresident) down to the secretariesfavoured this project. Even in hardtimes like these WEA saw thatsomething had to be done and sowe did it." Over 40 artists wrote 17exclusive songs, and there aremore on the way. "We already haveenough material to fill a secondalbum which is scheduled forrelease in spring 2002. The co-operation with the artists fromother labels was not at all prob-lematic. Every afro -German artistunderstands the importance of thetopic," explains Rudnitzky.

The styles of music on thealbum are very diverse. Whilethe first single Adriano was ahard rap song, on the album hip -hop, soul and reggae are equallyrepresented. As Adriano just fea-tured male artists, their femalecounterparts come in the form ofSisters Keepers whose first sin-gle Liebe and Verstand (releasedate: January 3) is enjoying"powerplay" status on MTV. Thecharity performers are expectedto tour Germany aroundFebruary/March time.

DANCE GROOVESby Gary Smith

JAll SPACE ODYSSEYAliftree's January 2002 releaseddebut album Spaced(Verve/France) contains a multi-plicity of influences and ethnicreferences across its 10 tracksalongside excellent vocal contri-butions from Helen Merrill andthe extraordinary Rona Hartner.Merrill's fragile tones onSolitude's Song mark her out asan unusual talent in that her pen-chant for jazz takes the form of adelicate, naive approach. Hervoice, couched in a swirling blendof Arabic and electronic tones, comes across somewhat like theSwedish singer Tina Nordenstam. The album's other guest vocalist,Rona Hartner, is the antithesis ofMerrill. Hartner's voice is pureRomanian gypsy complete withmelodramatic turns of phrase anda cracked, "stagey" laugh; purecamp in other words. Anapoda, the song she is featured on, wouldbe, thanks to its wheezing harmo-niums and splendid melody, oneof the album's standout momentswith or without vocals. But herthroaty, dynamic voice has ren-dered it a classic of theethno/chill/jazz sub -genre.

CAMDEN UNDERGROUNDDespite the fact that the dancecompilation business has beenundeniably revived by the chill-out/lounge phenomenon, selling25,000 copies in six weeks of analbum of underground music thatmixes Rai with phat beats is stillquite a result. Arabesque Zoudge(React Music/UK), put together

by Momo owner Mourad Mazuzwith resident DJs Boris andStephane, comes beautifullypackaged and bearing the undeni-ably powerful stamp of London -based Momo restaurant. "Frenchcompilations such as Hotel Costeshave been as skilful at offering anattractive artefact as they have incompiling exceptional music,"says React Music director ThomasFoley. "Packaging is important forthe mature demographic." Themusic, happily, is just as good thecover. Kicking off with Yalili VaAini by Jah Wobble's Invaders OfThe Heart, the album takes inRachid Taha's excellent Nokta, the sublime, flute -heavy Jonon byStephane Malca, Raba Raba-one of Khaled's best moments, alongside contributions fromNatacha Atlas, Djamel Ben Yellesand the extraordinary instrumen-tal track Khalliouni Khalliouniby 1,2,3 Soleils. The story goesthat Steve Hillage (Rachid Taha'slongtime producer) found thetrack on an old cassette inCamden Market in London.

F COM TRIUMPHEven by its own very high stan-dards, it has been an exceptionalyear for F Communications.Llorca's debut album Newcomerhas sold over 120.000 units and isnow taking off in Australia just assummer breaks. Alongside that araft of acts including TheYoungsters, Readymade and AlexKid have turned in formidablealbums. 2002 looks set to beequally fruitful with albums bySoul Designer and FredericGalliano in the first quarter.

CYPRESS HILL

LOWRIDER/TROUBLE(Columbia Records)Release date: November26, 2001This double A -sided singleis the first cut fromCypress Hill's new albumStoned Raiders, which

was released on December 3, 2001. One of thepioneers of the hip -hop rock/metal fusion, theband from LA are now on their ninth albumsince their self -titled debut in 1991. Trouble isa pulsating and energetic tune, juxtaposingcrisp rapping and scratching with raging rockinterludes, and is characterised by a catchyand haunting bass line. Meanwhile, Lowrideris a well -crafted, chilled -out hip -hop track witha slight Latin flavour to it. Alastair Brown, head of music at the Student BroadcastNetwork in London says, "We are playingTrouble, as I think it is the stronger song, a bitmore interesting. I like the drum 'n' bass, almost, metal -rap fusion. It's entertaining, it'sfun. Although it's different from what they'vedone before, there is a lot of innovative hip -hopcrossing into the mainstream now, [so] they arecompeting in a very tight area."

Sisters Keepers havealready been our guests in the studio and theBrothers Keepers/Sisters Keepers tour throughGermany was a huge success-they always playedsold -out venues. ii0's Rapture (Tastes So Sweet) (Made/Ministry OfSound) stays at number one on the chart for thefourth consecutive week, way ahead of its closest com-petitor, one-time chart -topper Kylie Minogue's Can'tGet You Out Of My Head (Parlophone).

Roger Sanchez feat. Armand van Heiden &N'Dea Davenport's You Can't Change Me (R-Senal/Defected & Sony) is closing in on the top, upto three from last week's four. Now that Sanchez'srecord -setting Another Chance (R-Senal/Defected& Sony) has dropped out of the top 100, You Can'tChange Me is coming into its own.

Germany's Andre Tanneberger-ATB-jumpsfrom 11 to five this week with Hold You (Kontor). The track is toping charts at home in Germany, while debuting on charts in The Netherlands, Italy,Denmark and Norway. Meanwhile, Russia's PPKbecomes the first act from eastern Europe to reachthe top 10 of the Dance Traxx chart. ResuRection(Perfecto) climbs 15-10 this week, thanks to chartentries in The Netherlands, Norway and Finlandand clubplay on import in Germany.

Originally from The Netherlands' UnitedRecordings, RIVA feat. Dannii Minogue's Stringer(Who Do You Love Me Now) has now crossed over toother territories and shoots up from last week's 25to this week's 12. Building on steady chart runs inthe UK and Germany, it debuts on the dancecharts in Scandinavia and Belgium this week.

Dance Street -signed Supa Dupa Fly from 666(House Nation/Dance Street), an act that oncetopped Dance Traxx chart for five (non-consecutive)weeks with Alarma! at the beginning of 1998, entersthe top 40 at 30 this week, with support from chartsin Germany, France, Italy, Norway and Poland.

A possible contender for next week's Dance Traxxtop 40, Simple Minds' classic Belfast Child (Virgin)gets a trance treatment by Britain's John "00"Fleming. The latter normally is on indie dance labelReact, but the new incarnation is credited to John"00" Fleming Vs. Simple Minds and titled BelfastTrance, appearing on Virgin dance label Nebula.

Also coming up, a fine track from Dutch labelCombined Forces, Juno's Breathless. Packed withexcellent Fragma-esque vocals the trancey trackseems to perfectly fit on radio playlists, and shouldvisit the Dance Traxx chart early in 2002.

ON THE AIRM&M's weekly airplay analysis column

It has been a month now since US artist Cherclimbed the hill of M&M's European Radio Top50, and she is still siting pretty at the top withMusic's No Good Without You (WEA).

The other positions inthe top five are occupiedby artists which have allmade their mark in2001. With Paid MyDues, Epic's Anastasia isat number two for thesecond week, RobbieWilliams & NicoleKidman (pictured) moveup from number four tonumber three withSomethin' Stupid(Chrysalis/EMI), and

Jennifer Lopez's I'm Real (Epic) follows atfour. At five is Destiny's Child with Emotion(Columbia), which has been in the Top 50 nowfor eleven consecutive weeks.

The highest new entry this week is Garbagewith the band's new track Cherry Lips on indielabel Mushroom. The single has been pickedup by radio stations over the whole of Europe, from VRT Studio Brussel in Belgium andRadio Riume Ticino in Switzerland to stationsin France, Italy, Latvia, Sweden and Russia. In Denmark four stations have added thetrack.

Jan Brodde, head of music at Radio Uptownin Copenhagen, time to make its mark. "Our listeners still con-sider the previous single, Androgyny, as thenew Garbage single. It's still much more popu-lar than Cherry Lips," he says. "I think thatthe general radio audience is much slowermoving concerning new releases than peoplein the radio and music industry."

He continues: "There are a lot of newreleases now in the pre -Christmas season andit's hard for people to keep up. ThereforeCherry Lips might be more successful afterChristmas than now in this busy time."

Brodde reckons the same scenario will betrue for the new Lenny Kravitz single StillnessOf Heart (Virgin), which entered the EuropeanRadio Top 50 at number 45 this week. "Wewon't playlist Stillness Of Heart yet becauseDig In is still hugely popular,"' says Brodde.

Another product of theGerman version of thePopstars TV show isBros'Sis (pictured). Thefour boys and two girlshave leapt into the Top 50with their debut single IBelieve (Polydor). At morethan 800,000 units shift-ed, the ballad has notchedup the highest first week

sales of any single ever released in Germany. It may only be rock'n'roll, but there is no

stopping pop veteran Mick Jagger. The 58 -year -old is back at number 45 with God GaveMe Everything (Virgin), taken from his latestalbum Goddess In The Doorway.

Candidates for entering the charts nextweek are US college rockers Sum 41 with InToo Deep (Island), Belgium dance artist IanVan Dahl with Will I (Nulife/Arista) and.Swedish disco pop act Alcazar with SexualGuarantee (RCA).

project manager Bea Goedhuys salesare "going as expected". She adds:"Belgium, Holland, Spain, France,New Zealand and Australia are themajor territories. In New Zealand itshipped gold straight away and wentto number five in the charts."

As for the additional DVD format,Goedhuys explains "music DVDs arestill a small niche". The overall mar-keting campaign has "been especiallypress -driven and about getting goodreviews and reaching not just NeilFinn and Crowded House fans, butalso Johnny Marr fans and Radio -head fans," she continues.

To do this, Parlophone has alsoserviced stations across Europe witha radio -only edit of The Smiths' songThere Is A Light That Will Never GoOut, which Neil Finn performs onthe album. But, as it is not a com-mercial release, many stations arenot programming the track.

"We're not playing the single I'mafraid," says Alan Carruthers, pro-gramme director at AC station HeartFM in Birmingham, UK, "-it's notfor release, is it?"

At Spanish AC network M-80,however, programmer Jesus Portelahas added the track to the station'splaylist. "Crowded House were animportant group for our audience,"he says. "We're an adult contempo-rary station so we play lots of '80sand '90s pop. When Neil went solowe still considered him a major artistfor us. His new single is very good. It's not for sale, but we received itfrom the record company. If someonewants it, they only have to buy thealbum."

The album and DVD 7 WorldsCollide features 17 tracks comprisingfavourites from Finn's CrowdedHouse days (Weather With You, Don'tDream It's Over) as well as songsfrom One Nil (Anytime, The Climber)interspersed with guest contribu-tions (Paper Doll/Lisa Germano,Take A Walk/Eddie Vedder, DownOn The Corner/Johnny Marr).

According to Neil Finn, it was TheSmiths' numbers he was most excit-ed about doing. When the residencywas still at the planning stage heremembered "trying to steer conver-sations with Johnny Marr to some ofmy favourite Smiths tracks." Headds: "I might be attacked by aderanged Morrissey fan. I have anotion they're not a particularlymuscly bunch!"

The resultant DVD has now beenedited for television and Parlophoneis trying to place it on TV interna-tionally early next year. Bea Goed-huys believes the decision to make aDVD of the shows was a no-brainer."You want to watch it as much ashear it," she states. "An amazingmoment in the DVD was when NeilFinn's son and his band [Betchadu-pa] play a version of I See Red-anold Split Enz song-and Eddie Ved-der performed it with them andthey're looking at [him] with a look of`I can't believe it's Eddie Vedder!' intheir eyes." Goedhuys says these arethe "special moments you don't getwith [just] the live album."

Sony Europe restructuresinternational marketingby Emmanuel Legrand

LONDON - Sony Music Europe is reor-ganising its international marketingteam following the departure of FrankStroebele, VP marketing,Epic and continental reper-toire, on December 14.

To replace him, SonyMusic Europe's presidentPaul Burger and senior VPmarketing Julie Borchardare splitting Stroebele'sduties. Jeroen van der Meer, who was formerly market-ing director, Epic will nowbe handling the label's internationalrepertoire.

An appointment is expected immi-nently for European continental reper-toire. M&M understands that the jobhas been offered to Mark Bond, cur-rently GM of licensed repertoire atindie label V2 in London. Both wouldreport to Borchard. Although Burgerdeclines to comment on Bond's possi-ble appointment, he does tell M&Mthat splitting the two functions willprovide an opportunity to concentrateon continental repertoire, which hasbeen identified as a major area fordevelopment by Sony Music.

"Jeroen has worked closely withFrank over the past years and we aregiving him a chance to prove himself,"comments Burger. "In addition, byseparating Epic's repertoire and conti-nental Europe's repertoire, it will helpprovide a greater focus on this reper-toire that we want to build upon."

Stroebele, who joined Sony MusicEurope in March 1998 from UniversalMusic Germany, will relocate in thenew year to Berlin where, on January1, he will launch his new management

company, Eye Sound Management.Of Stroebele's departure, Burger

says: "We are sorry that Frank is leav-ing. He's done an excellent job over thethree years he has been in London. We

hope we will work with himin his new capacity."

With offices in Londonand Berlin, Eye Sound Man-agement will focus on Euro-pean artists with interna-tional potential. Stroebelesays it is too soon to nameacts signed to his new com-pany, but he is alreadyworking on a couple of deals.

Stroebele says his experience overthe past years with artists such asAnastacia and Macy Gray-as well asGermany's Sarah Connor, Belgium'sHooverphonic and Finland's BomfunkMCs-has convinced him that there isa need for professional artist manage-ment structures with pan-Europeanexpertise. "The international experi-ence gained in my London time isinvaluable for Eye Sound," he says.

"These days, success can come fromanywhere, but organising pan-Euro-pean success is not an easy task," con-tinues Stroebele, who adds that hedoesn't rule out managing US acts forEurope "if I think they are the rightartists for Europe." He also believeshis advice could benefit labels insearch of pan-European strategies.

"People in Europe are no longer asAmericanised as they used to be,"Stroebele reflects. "Radio stations inEuropean countries still play interna-tional repertoire but they also supportdomestic acts and, at the same time, they can play artists from virtuallyanywhere. We are seeing the rise of aEuropean culture."

Publishing move for Bujaby Mark Worden

MILAN - Following weeks of specula-tion, Universal Music Italy has offi-cially announced a series of changesto its management struc-ture.

The main move sees thepromotion of director A&RClaudio Buja to the post ofmanaging director of Univer-sal Music Italy Publishing.

"After 10 years in A&Rthis presents a great chal-lenge," says Buja. "Too manypeople consider [publishing]to be a purely administrativebranch of the music industry. Wehave to restore it to its traditionalrole, which was more central andmore creative."

Buja replaces Michele Del Vecchio, who has left the company to take upthe post of head of light music atanother publishing house, Curci Edi-zioni. Buja's post of director A&R istaken over by current director of mar-keting Stefano Zappaterra, with Zap-paterra's old role being taken by new

media director Carlo Galassi. Hisposition is, in turn, filled by FabioRiveruzzi.

President and managing directorof Universal Music Italy Piero La

Falce tells M&M: "Thesechanges are brought aboutby a desire to promote tal-ented individuals withinthe company as we endeav-our to meet the challengesof today's market."

Buja says of his taskahead: "We will try andmake our publishing divi-sion more research -orient-ed, discovering and develop-

ing new writers and artists. We'realso going to be working hard onmusic's new media applications."

Universal has applied to join thenew Italian publishers associationFEM, which was formed at the begin-ning of December. By joining, FEMUniversal is following in the footstepsof BMG Ricordi, Sugar, Sonzogno,Cam, Sony Music and EMI. Of themajors, only Warner Chappellremains outside the new grouping.
