MENDELEY FOR BEGINNERS

Mendeley is referencing aid software
which can be installed for free by all
students and is essential to ensure
correct reference format during thesis or
paper journal writing. The software allow
student to properly organized their
reviews and easily cite it toward their
publication. The speaker of the program,
Mr Muhammad Saeed Shahbaz was well
known an expert in Mendeley Software
while the facilitators for the program
include GSA vice-president, Mr Faheem,
Mr Aamir and Mr Aqeel Ahmed. The
program was divided into 2 sessions
which is the introduction to Mendeley
session in the morning and hands-on
practice session in the afternoon.
Easy way to write
proposal

Easy way to write proposal was a
program held by GSA to help
postgraduate student in preparing their
proposal. The program was divided into
two main category which were
engineering and social science. The
speech for engineering category was
given by Prof Dr Ahmad Tarmizi bin Abd
Karim while the speech for social science
category was given by Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Amran Bin Harun. The speech consists of
sharing on tips to write a good proposal
and important things should be included
within a proposal. The program main aim
was to ensure that new postgraduate
students will be more prepared in
defending their research proposal.

3 Minute thesis
competition

PARTICIPANTS: ±100 peoples
REFLECTION: 3 Minute Thesis
(3MT) is an annual event organized
by Centre for Graduate Studies (CGS)
and Graduate Students’ Association
(GSA), UTHM. Each faculty in UTHM
is represented by three PhD students.
In this competition, participants are
required to present their research
work in just three minutes with a
single presentation slide. 10
participants who did well in the first
round then compete again in the
second round to find the best
presenter. Three winners were
selected after the jury had deliberated
their marks, and these winners will be
representing UTHM in the 3 Minute
Thesis competition national level.

In search for a vibrant new logo for
Centre for Graduate Studies (CGS)
UTHM, a logo competition was held
by GSA and CGS. The competition
opens to all UTHM students where
participants are required to design a
logo for CGS in English and Malay. All
submitted logo and explanation of
each components used in the logo
were judged by judges from CGS
committee. On 19th August 2018, the
winning logo which is an entry from
Mr. Muzakkir Mohd Nadzri (FKEE
Master student) was presented with a
cash prize and a token of appreciation
by the Dean of CGS.

Yayasan Warisan
Johor

PARTICIPANTS: ± 40 people
REFLECTION: This is a corporate social
responsibility (CSR) program organized by
Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) to
extend community service towards
society. This program was held in Yayasan
Warisan Johor (YWJ) where postgraduate
students representing 11 countries had
involved in this program. The aim of this
program was to expose the culture of
Johor among International students and
local students. Students had learnt basic
traditional dance which is called as Zapin.
The students also had the opportunity to
visit museum of Johor culture and learn
how to make batik and songket; traditional
Malaysian fabric. After lunch, students
help YWJ to clean the nearby area to
support green environment. The
objectives had been achieved where GSA
members can engage with the community
and spread positive vibes to the society.

As Centre for Graduate Studies (CGS)
and Graduate Students’ Association
(GSA) are working closely together, a
family day gathering all CGS staff and
GSA members were held. This program
allows the staff and students to interact
in a casual, leisure way. They also
interact with people from different age
range in a fun environment as the
participants also bring their kids and
family. Participants also got the chance
to taste a multitude types of food from
various countries including Indonesia,
Yemen, Iraq, Pakistan, Nigeria, and
Malaysia. This program not only
enhance the bond between CGS staff
and students, but also improve the
understanding between the locals and
international students.

REFLECTION: A Day with The Dean is
a program jointly organized by Graduate
Students’ Association (GSA) with
Mechanical Postgraduate Association
(MePA) and IEEE Engineering in
Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS)
student body. This program was held at
Bilik Lestari 2, Perpustakaan Tunku Tun
Aminah, UTHM targeting all UTHM
postgraduate students. This event was
held so that the deans of designated
faculty can motivate and encourage the
postgraduate students to never give up
and continue to strive. Three deans
attended the program which includes the
dean of Centre for Graduate Studies
(CGS), the dean of Faculty of Electrical
and Electronic Engineering (FKEE) and
the dean of Faculty of Mechanical and
Manufacturing Engineering (FKMP).

ONLINE PROOFREAD
WORKSHOP

PARTICIPANTS: ± 60 people
Online Proof Read workshop was a
program held in order to exposed
postgraduate student on how to execute
thesis or journal paper proofreading via
online. Apart from that, this program
shows the participant on the possibility of
starting a proofreading business. The
workshop was facilitated and given by Mr
Aamir Khan and Mr Asim Shahzad,
founder of an online proofreading service
provider. The workshop consisted of two
sessions which were the talk of
introductory in the morning followed by a
hands-on session in the afternoon. Both
shared their knowledge and provide the
best platform for the participants
interested to gain some extra income. The
program also provides a platform for GSA
to bond with postgraduate students while
exchanging ideas, culture and spreading
positive vibes throughout.

SMART-PLS workshop was a program
held mainly to expose the student on the
importance and advantages in applying
Smart PLS software within their research.
The program main aim was to help
postgraduate students who needed extra
knowledge and information towards this
software. The program consists of two
sessions which start with the introductory
talk in the morning followed by a hands-
on session in the afternoon. Apart from
that, the workshop also provides a Q&A
session where the students facing
problem with the software can seek for
assistance from the speaker. The
program was facilitated and given by Dr.
Mumtaz Ali Memon from Universiti
Teknologi Petronas who is well verse in
SMART-PLS Software.

This program was organized as part of
Graduate Students’ Association (GSA)
CSR activity and to instil
entrepreneurship skills among GSA
members. GSA had previously collected
used clothes donated by students, and
the clothes were put up for charity sale
in the night market. All profit gained will
be channelled to Batu Pahat Orphanage
House. Hence, GSA will be planning an
eid celebration visit to the orphanage to
deliver the donation..

CSR at Parit Raja is a corporate social
responsibility (CSR) program jointly
organized by Graduate Students’
Association (GSA) with JKKK Kg Parit
Raja. This program was held in Parit
Raja with 120 postgraduate students.
The objectives of the program is to build
healthy relationship between university
and society. The students had painted
the school, collect the trashes and clean
the Parit Raja area. The program is also
to support the green ecosystem.

Youth voluntourism

VENUE: UTHM, Zoo Johor
PARTICIPANTS: ±80 peoples
Youth Voluntourism is a program aims to
nurture volunteering spirit among youths
especially in tourism field. This program
was organized by Co-curriculum Unit
UTHM by the students who took tourism
cluster. Graduate Students’ Association
(GSA) was invited as the volunteers to
facilitate the school kids who participated
in this program. Around 50 students from
Sekolah Kebangsaan Sabak Uni were
involved. The volunteers were required to
engage with the students in sports and
recreational activities in the morning and
evening. The students were also brought
to Zoo Johor in Johor Bahru where they
learnt about the variety of flora and fauna
species available as explained by the
volunteers.

GSA TV was developed to ensure that
the voices of GSA members can be heard
throughout the world not just within
UTHM. GSA TV is a Youtube Channel
handled by GSA Committee. The channel
consists of short videos in duration of 1-5
minutes each. The shooting on this
program was the first shooting for official
videos on GSA TV. The video shots on
this program includes the introduction to
GSA TV video shot by GSA President, Mr
Anbia, Women empowerment series 1 –
Life as an Olympiad by Miss Adawiyah,
Women empowerment series 2 – Men’s
role in Women empowerment by Mr
Shamy and Women empowerment series
3 – Speak out!!! by Miss Anis. The video
shooting session ended with all
participants involve in making short video
for Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The program was a
success and all shooting sessions were
done smoothly.
