DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF FNR-PLANETARY GEAR BOX

-A.PRAVEEN KUMAR (Pre-final year)

Epicyclic gear trains are

employed in the design and

fabrication of FNR PLANE-

TARY GEAR BOX(FORWARD,

REVERSE, and NEUTRAL).

FNR GEAR BOXES are used

in cars, forklifts and trucks

with automatic transmis-

sion to operate the vehicle

in three required modes

thereby transmitting power from the engine to wheels.

The planet gears in gear train act as idler gears that bring about the required reversal torque with a

reduction gear ratio. Planetary gear boxes are advantageous as the load is divides by three gears at a time and

three teeth each in the sun and ring gear. Hence higher torque can be transmitted in a small area with required

gear ratio.

Gear1 (High speed, low torque) : Direct coupling of output shaft with sun gear (input shaft)

Gear2: (High torque, low speed) : Coupling with the planet carrier (Planet carrier)

Gear3: (Max torque, low speed) : Coupling with ring gear (Reversal) “ANNULUS GEAR”

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF 360 DEGREE STEERING

-DAVID LAMINGTON (Pre-final year)

This project mainly aims at in developing a four wheel steering prototype. In today’s world the vehicles operated

inside the industries and warehouses are used to lift and transport heavy loads .Those vehicles are in a need to

face sharp turns. On such conditions they fail. Our project reveals a new idea to overcome the problem. This pro-

ject is all about a four wheeler, in that sprockets are used to connect all wheels and the steering rod with the chain

drive. If steering is rotated left all wheels rotate simultaneously in same direction. All wheels can be rotated to 360

degree including the steering wheel. So it will be easy to operate the vehicle even in sharp turns.

This mechanism is used in industries , it is a chain drive operated steering mech-anism. It can be easily implemented in Automobiles. With this steering mecha-nism the vehicle can travel in all angle in

a straight line.

This steering mechanism is very much useful when implemented in vehicles like FORK LIFTER, CRANES so it makes the transport very easy inside the Indus-

tries and Construction area.

Four wheel steering is a method developed in automobile industry for the effective turning of vehicles and to increase the maneuvera-bility. In a typical front wheel steering system the rear wheels do not turn in the direction of the curve and thus act as curb on the efficiency of the vehicle. In four wheelsteering the rear wheel turn

with the front wheels thus increasing the efficiency of the vehicle

In industries and ware houses the vehicle with higher wheel base and the track width face problems of turning as the space is con-fined, the same problem is faced on low speed cornering .

EMISSION,COMBUSTION AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF A

DI DIESEL ENGINE FUELLED WITH n-OCTANOL/DIESEL BLENDS

-V.ANISH (Final year)

The interest in biofuels is on the rise due to the declining volume of finite petroleum resources as a result of

growing demands of the swelling population and flourishing economy. A recent research by Winkelmann et al

confirmed that emissions from combustion of available fossil fuel reserves could eliminate the entire Antarctic

Ice Sheet which could increase the global sea level and possibly drown the entire coastal population and eco-

systems across the world. Diesel engines are undoubtedly the most efficient power trains that drive the indus-

trial, agricultural, transportation and agricultural sectors of global economy. However they emit harmful pollu-

tants like soot and NOx when fossil diesel is used. Soot contributes high concentrations of toxic fine suspended

particles to the environment. These nano-sized particles are carcinogenic and when inhaled, are capable of

trans-locating to brain cells through olfactory nerves and impair cognitive function resulting in diseases such

as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Exposure to small-

10 microns) have caused an estimated 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide . Diesel fumes when inhaled by

pregnant women cause adverse effect on foetal development . With the rate of premature deaths associated

with these emissions set to increase in the coming decades, engine researchers often resort to methods like

engine design modifications, diesel fuel reformulation, deploying new combustion strategies to utilize those

fuels and using after-treatment emission control devices like diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate fil-

ters, selective catalytic reduction etc. to ameliorate the detrimental effects of harmful pollutants

This study investigated the effects of n-octanol/diesel blends on the combustion, performance and emissions

of a single-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine. Three n-octanol/diesel blends designated as OCT10, OCT20

and OCT30 which corresponds to 10%, 20% and 30% by vol. of n-octanol in fossil-diesel respectively were

used under both naturally aspirated and EGR conditions (10%, 20% and 30%).

Page 11 Volume 2, Issue 4, April 2016

The engine characteristics were summarized based on the experimental results in comparison with ULSD op-

eration of the engine:

1.n-Octanol is miscible with fossil-diesel without any phase separation at room temperature and doesn’t re-

quire any additional surfactants/solvents. It is possible to operate a DI diesel engine with upto 30% n-

octanol/diesel blends with and without EGR. No modifications are required for this operation and no visible

damage to the engine parts is observed.

2. Ignition delay for all n-Octanol/diesel blends are slightly longer than ULSD due to their low cetane number.

All blends presented an better premixed combustion phase characterized with higher peaks of in-cylinder

pressure and HRRs. Introduction of EGR prolonged the ignition delay and delivered lower peaks of in-cylinder

pressure & HRR.

3. BSFC decreases and BTE increases with increasing n-octanol fraction in the fuel. However, both the perfor-

mance parameters suffered under EGR influence.

4. NOx emission decreases with increased n-octanol fraction in the blends. NOx emission gradually decreases

with increasing EGR rates for all blends. Higher noctanol/diesel blends provided higher NOx reduction at in-

creased EGR rates.

5. Smoke opacity decreases with increasing n-octanol content in the blends. A reduction of upto one-sixth was

realized with OCT30. Smoke increased gradually for all blends, but remained lower than ULSD with the intro-

duction of EGR.

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF BELT CONVEYOR SYSTEM -D.SELVAM (Pre-Final year)

Belt Conveyor is the transportation of material from one location to another. conveyor has the high load carry-

ing capacity, large length of conveyor path, simple design, easy maintenances and high reliability operation.

Belt Conveyor system is also used various industries such as the material transport in foundry shop like supply

and distribution of molding sand, moulds and removal of waste, coal and mining industry, sugar industry, agri-

cultural industry, biogases industry, fuel industry etc.

whenever the bulk material requires continuous transportation belt conveyors supply a reliable means. If the

handling rate and total quantity warrant, they usually are the most economical. Belt conveyors are employed

for conveying various bulk and unit loads along horizontal or slightly inclined paths and for transporting arti-

cles between various operations in production flow lines.

Belt conveyors are used as the principle components of some complex machines such as wheel excavator,

conveyor bridges and many other type of hoisting and conveying machines.

During the project design stage for the transport of raw materials or finished products, the choice of the

method must favor the most cost effective solution for the volume of material moved; the plant and its mainte-

nance; its flexibility for adaptation and its ability to carry a variety of loads and even be overloaded at times.

During the project design stage for the transport of raw materials or finished products, the choice of the

method must favor the most cost effective solution for the volume of material moved; the plant and its mainte-

nance; its flexibility for adaptation and its ability to carry a variety of loads and even be overloaded at times.

The design of conveyor belt cover com-

pound is most important in determining

the service life of the belt in any particu-

lar application. Heat and flex-cracking

resistance being the essential require-

ments of conveyor belts in service, dif-

ferent types of anti-oxidants are used

for heavy, medium and light duty belts.

Conveyor Belt has more tolerated power

to bear heavy load & it has long life, moreover it can transfer power from one pulley to another.

The circuit uses a simple IR sensor to detect the presence or absence of an object and then uses the output as

clock pulse for the counter/driver IC.

The sensor works on the principle of reflection of un-modulated infrared rays, It is therefore recommended

that the circuit is used only as an indoor unit as the sunlight outdoors will cause a lot of false triggering. the

range and sensitivity of the IR sensor can be calibrated using the on-board 10k variable resistor.

Every time the first IC exceeds count of 9,the second IC receives one clock pulse.

There are two 7 segments displays and IC 4026 used here to count up to 99.The 5th pin of 4026 gives out a pulse when it moves from 9 to 0

FABRICATION & CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF EFFECTIVE TAKE OFF & LANDING

OF AIRCRAFT USING MAGLEV

-J.DEEPAK MELWANI (Final year), N.BASKAR SETHUPATHI (Final year)

Among the most important problems in an aircraft is the accidents caused during the landing and the take-off.

About 48% of the accidents are caused during the landing of an aircraft and 13% of them during the take-off.

The main aim of the project is to reduce the number of accidents caused while take-off and landing of an air-

craft. The use of magnetic strips or the magnets by the opposite poles used nearby in the runway and the belly

of an aircraft this project can be brought to existence.

Another method to implement this electrically is the use of superconducting materials in the runway and vary-

ing the speed of the aircraft by altering the electricity that is passing through the superconductors or by fabri-

cating the runway such that it is of iron rods covered with the copper wires and electricity can be passed

through to make it magnetized and the belly of the aircraft can be of aluminium material. With the use of MAG-

LEV concept the vehicle is levitated at a short distance away from the guide-way using magnets/strips to cre-

ate the lift and thrust. In this project the prototype of the Aircraft with magnets attached at the bottom and the

runway is also fabricated. By implementing this concept, the length of the runway can be reduced considerably

when compared to the normal runways and also the accidents can be minimized to a greater extent and also

smooth landing can be experienced.

WHAT IS MAGLEV?

Maglev (derived from magnetic levitation) is a transport method that uses magnetic levitation to move vehi-

cles without touching the ground. With maglev, a vehicle travels along a guide-way using magnets to create

both lift and propulsion, thereby reducing friction by a great extent and allowing very high speeds

This concept of magnetic levitation is implemented in trains in Japan and is named as the fastest means of

ground transportation. The Shanghai Maglev Train, also known as the Trans-rapid, is the fastest commercial

train currently in operation and has a top speed of 430 km/h (270 mph).

Volume 2, Issue 4, April 2016

Page 15: Volume 2, Issue 4 April 2016 Brain Waves April 2016.pdf · Volume 2, Issue 4 April 2016 ... IAETSD Goa Goa 01 Feb 2016 ... continuous transportation belt conveyors supply a reliable

Page 15 Volume 2, Issue 4, April 2016

Maglev trains move more smoothly and more quietly than wheeled mass transit systems. They are

relatively unaffected by weather. The power needed for levitation is typically not a large percentage of its

overall energy

c o ns u m p t io n ;

most goes to

overcome drag,

as with other

h i g h - s p e e d

transport. Mag-

lev trains hold

the speed rec-

ord for trains.

APPLICATION OF MAGLEV IN AIRCRAFT

The main aim of this project is to implement the concept of MAGLEV in

an aircraft which will prevent the accidents of the aircraft while take-off and landing due to the absence of

wheels.

As there are no wheels present initially there is no contact between the ground and the aircraft body thus

there is no friction between them which leads to a comfortable smooth landing of the aircraft. Implementation

of this concept will also reduce the size of the runway considerably than that of the size of normal convention-

al runways which is a very big advantage.
